I made these a couple weeks ago, I posted them, got some positive reviews, only bad one was the art style but that's fitting with the story so you guys said.

I was in the process of a move and I'm just about done now, so I can resume this.
I am also glad for once I got to post this at the beginning of the thread...

Oh, and I've begin to set up social media accounts so I can get this out there. I fear the SJWs though.

iirc there are a couple here,
anons making or thinking of making:
childhood memoirs
fantasy sol of two little girls
sol of a loli assassin in skimpy clothes
sol 4koma rpg parody
comedy of a miserable girl and retard friend
>>
Can I ask you guys a favour? I think I'm having some clarity issues. My gf is finding it difficult to understand what's going on in this page.

Pic related would be the next page to tapastic.com/series/carpetcity. Can anyone please just read through that (it's just a few pages) and tell me if this last page makes any sense in context?

Also if you want to insult me for grammar/spelling it wouldn't harm.

Ignore anatomy etc, I'm going to fix those after.

>>
>>81225357
...What IS going on in that page? It seems like weird non-linear worldbuilding stuff about carpet salespeople. I can't read it on Tapastic because I don't have an account, but they're still talking to that guy that tried to rob them, right?
>>
>>81225504
ok, then yes, I do have a problem here.

Pretty much what you guessed; perhaps it's way too nonlinear way too soon.

I didn't realize tapastic was so anal, you can read here too carpetcity.webcomic.ws

Anyways I'll rework this page. I think I can save this with some clever paneling.

>>81224089
well, mine is supposed to become a travel comic with more of a sol vibe than full on adventure.
>>
I want to make a web comic to 1) watch myself improve and 2) get my name out there, but i have not the creativity or drive to make one
>>
>>81225841
Looking for a writer?
>>
>>81225805
Well it seems like pretty clear non-linear worldbuilding stuff. The page works any which way you read it, so I wouldn't say the lack of linearity is a big detractor.
Only real problem is that I keep wanting to read the speech balloons in Sinus' panel, then the panel about the mayor, and then back to Sinus for the caption about his clothes. If you moved teh traditional carpet attire caption up around his head instead so you'd read the whole thing at once, I think that would fix the flow.
>>
>>81225886
yeah kind of.

My art is still sub par so I'm a bit nervous about actively seeking a writer.
>>
>>81225953
What kind of comics were you looking to work on?
Don't worry, writers looking for artists are a lot more common than artists looking for writers because of the comparatively low level of commitment required.
>>

Aside from the obvious anatomy issues (which, honestly, are a lot more pressing than the design issues)

Coat's a little plain. There's no buttons, no cuffs, just a coat that looks like it's made from purple plastic bag material. Some detail in the same pale yellow as the hat's details would work.
The pauldron seems strange and out of place. The orange of the leather looks terrible next to the purple coat, it doesn't make sense as armor because of the tiny coverage, he's not using it as a bandolier to carry anything, and if it's supposed to be decorative it doesn't look very ornate.
The hat is decent, but you've drawn the teeth very 2d. I'm not sure if the central thing is a candle of some sort or a nasal guard.

The undershirt (armor?) looks like he'd stab his throat out if he looked down.

Also some major problems with the basic anatomy:
Don't draw hair like a bunch of lines, but a single shape.
Don't make the back of a character's head concave. The skull is basically a sphere.
>>
>>81230926
thanks for the feedback, mate
Yeah my anatomy is probably awful atm i definately need to focus on that and the design was kind of bugging me as well. His cloak is way too bland for my taste and I need to try to give it more design.
thanks again

>>81221212
i'm not terribly proud of it. i just had to get it out of me, and this is one of only two circuseses in the comic. the other is faggy vampires. but not like the twilight kind, the fruity french kind.
Honestly this little arc isn't working at all, but I had like NO ideas and this is all I could cobble together. I'm desperately thinking of ways to tie it into the upcoming big thingy so it seems less pointles.
>>
I was wondering, what can you do to get into the mood of writing scenes or dialogue for your comics? I recently went to a convention, and asked some of the writers there for tips. One said to just try out scenes and see what works. Another said she was excited about her writing, and that it helps if you are excited about writing for your characters and where they will take you in the story.

I'm wondering if theres anything else I could do to get the writing juices flowing. I have plenty of ideas for scenes and characters. And I am pretty happy when I get inspiration and write it down. So if anyone else has some good tips for me. I would love to hear them.
>>
>>81232885

>>81227330
loving that improved shoulder anatomy on the nudes. Now look at the one wearing a shirt. see how the armpits of the shirt go up too high, and are too angular? think about the shoulder underneath when you draw the shirt.
>>
>>81229320
>how to incorporate him
what kind of duties does he have? when i heard lackey for deity he's in love with, I thought Pit immediately. in any case, whatever his duties are, that will tell you how to story.
>>
Doing something kind of experimental with Ennui GO! today. We'll see if it works.
>>
>>81232997
By improving the same as everyone else, except slower. So slow you don't notice it. I don't notice it either, til I feel like getting lazy and copying old art, and realize I can't because I made some ridiculous mistakes back then I'd never make now (sometimes I recycle it anyway and just fix it)
In each area, I have no idea how I improved, no idea how I need to improve now, no idea how to induce it. but it just does improve on its own... very slowly.
as for motivation.. fuck, if I stopped drawing them, they'd stop living! can't have that. Pretty much the only thing I have going for my life, the only thing that'd be missed if I died.

>>
>>81227051
I'd drop the black outlines on the mossy bits to dark green, and increase the contrast of the shading on the letters.

I think the lettering area could do with being higher contrast overall, and the moss a little desaturated. I'm not entirely sure about that left-hand dangling root either...
>>
>>81235043
feels like im on the right track then
>>81235121
also, you

>>
>>81235220
The moss is already outlined dark green, but I guess I should lighten it a tad if it's being seen as black, haha.

For the lettering area, do you mean the letters themselves or te red paint behind it? I've had another person tell me it could be a bit more saturated.

I kinda like the root myself, but I might shorten it, maybe put a couple more down there, just so it's not drawing too much attention.
>>
>>81235242
That's good to know. Then I just hopefully made the fraction of people who get it a little higher.
>>
>>81235981
i'd keep the red as-is, it's perfect. more saturation would be blinding
but the green could use a touch more saturation and definitely more contrast with the darker shading green
>>
>>81235981
>do you mean the letters themselves or te red paint behind it?
A little bit of both. Try darkening the red paint a little, and boosting the contrast of the shading on the lettering.

The dangling slime droplet seems to be hanging at a slight angle instead of true vertical.

>Mood/Tone
The idea is that The Sisters is supposed to feel sorta like an 80s movie at its bet, and like some CW bullshit at its worst. Tone-wise, something that gets more serious as it goes on while still trying to pretend that everything is slice of life. I'd say we want to be more Fright Night than Roger Corman, but there's nothing wrong with Corman at times. Ideally we want things to feel grounded in character logic, so leaps and jumps make sense for those within the world but seem like bad ideas to us as readers.
>Target Demographic
Honestly, I just wanted something I could appreciate myself. A lot of urban fantasy goes too gonzo too quick; and almost all of it ignores its Americana roots in noir. So we opted to make it a little more Brick than Maltese Falcon, and avoid elves, vamps and shit; as well as any paranormal investigations proper. We do have a large trans audience apparently, and ideally we want the teen-to-young adult crowd without having to appeal directly to them in a derivative fashion.

>>81224089
Slice of life is an interesting genre, and those are my favorite parts to write. Unfortunately they're the least interesting parts to get drawn. When we get to do those parts, I try to center them around familial disharmony, class differences within a group, and cowardice being the way to a safe but rarely easy life. Plus secrets.

>>81232976
>Writing scenes/dialogue.
I watch TV for interesting dynamics and I frankly just enjoy conversations. I also get into weird fucking situations, so that helps with scenes. I'd say remember body language and most people don't state the whole of why they think something, they just think it---why is often shown through action and repetitive behavior.

And always rewrite your scenes after you read them aloud a few times. And maybe have someone else look at them too.

Honestly, once you have dynamics down; making them interact in an interesting way is the fun part.

He's supposed to be a stressed businessman that acts like he owns the world. He can't stand being at the bottom, and lashes out at authority. He's put in charge of a dying company essentially as a fall guy while the other, smarter people jumped ship before they were dragged down with it.

Basically he doesn't see past the fact that he's now the boss, and believes he can right the ship.
>>
>>81250783
that sounds really interesting. he acts like he owns the world, yet he's at the bottom? but he's in charge?
anyway it'll be pretty interesting to see how this goes. and the art's nice, though I'd raise his cranium higher. It's never good if your face is bigger than your braincase.
>>
>>81251136
plus with more forehead room his eyebrows could actually raise in surprise without smacking into his horns. i used to really hate forehead horns but they're totally growing on me. better than temple-mounted horns anyway. actually even WITHIN the on-the-top placement category i can never decide whether I like them on the front corners of the cranium or the rear, or in between..
>>
>>81240097
my friend says you should make her point the computer in the last panel with the same face, as if asking her mom wtf is on the computer
>>
>>81251136

>he acts like he owns the world, yet he's at the bottom? but he's in charge?

He works hard which is why he's noticed at all, but he's thick headed. The former boss, a succubus, even explained to him in plain English that he was essentially going to be a fall guy.

She knows all too well that all it takes with him is the idea of power, and something to prove.

The thing to understand is that villains live in a neutered world because they got rich and lazy -- This guy's lust for corporate power is just compensation for his lack of proficiency in being an actual demon, and doing demon things. All of it driven home by the way he was raised, and how he always felt inadequate even from a young age.

I currently started to resume
I am thinking of changing art style since the only negative criticism I got was on that
here was something I was working on but I scrapped it 'cause it hit too close to home
I actually did this when heavily intoxicated but it was too close to a self insert that yeah, fuck it

do i continue with the shitty mouse to ms paint and get carpal tunnel? I can show some of my sketches and how I can better art but this just seems fitting

eh, i got oblivon and a bunch of awesome mods and got distracted from drawing for a few days, doing some fan art for uknown lands cuz its the artists birthday today

hopefully this is a warm up and i will keep drawing after this

hopefully my videogame addiction wont get me lost in video games for the rest of the week when i should be drawing non stop until my hands fall off

but i will probably just watch netflix and start playing my modded to hell version of oblivion which is giving me tons of nostalgia highs instead of drawing more stuff after this, fuck my life

>>
>>81265784
>Doctor Who fan comic
No.
>>
>>81267677
I think that's the problem, the ideas I've came up with rely on the story being longer, there is a twist with the 'foe' and what goes into their motivations.

I should come up with something high concept and like Midnight or Blink.

another one i was thinking of was 'The Lovecraftian Zoo' a secret facility where they keep dangerous beings that seem out of place in the universe, similar to the boneless from Flatline.
The trouble is that I might up with too many monsters to worry about.
>>
>>81267872
no such thing as too many monsters. when you're writing in a larger setting like that, it takes care of them.

What you guys reommend for someone trying to get better at drawing. I know it's a broad question but just in general what kind of tips can be shared?
Basically just draw, draw, and then draw some more?
>>
>>81268749
pay attention to the shapes you're making. but even if you can't, draw those shapes a lot. part of you is paying attention (brainstem i think?)
try doing things from other angles a lot. imagine holding the thing in your hand. i can't tell you how many times i've been like "no.. this needs to be a straight line at this angle,... right?" and then turned it over a few times mentally and finally realized 'nope. curved. it's a dome cut in half, so even though that cut in half line is straight when viewed head on, it's a curve from this angle because it's a curved dome'

If you can draw simple shapes well, you can draw anything well.

Always use reference when you can.

Focus on improving just one thing at a time.

Always remember to find out how to make studies interesting and fun. When at all possible, find a way to apply the thing you want to learn to the thing you would draw for fun, rather than the other way around.

For learning perspective, learn how to draw a box in perspective and then learn how to turn that box into the thing you're trying to draw.

Still trying to rustle up the discipline to stop and draw strips again. Posted a first draft of this the other week. Here's a progress update:

Tightened up the pencils. Had the idea of turning part of the titlebar into the guy's thoughtbubble.

Any seriously wrong with the perspective in panel 1? Is the table the right size or is he 12 feet tall and sitting in a hole? I thought about swapping the standing and sitting exhibitors next to him, so there would be a line from his face to the furries. Feedback appreciated.
>>
>>81272388
hey nice perspective man. this is good stuff
but I think they are definitely much higher than him (as they should be, them standing and him sitting) in the first panel but then by the 3rd and 4th they're his same height
>>
>>81272482
Sounds like something to fix; I tried to show him standing up in panel 2, so 3 and 4 are okay. Now that I look at panel 1, he does seem to be a little larger than he should be (maybe it's the sze of his head?).
Thanks for spotting that.
>>
>>81272653
well i mean, look at the height of the table. his visible upper body is higher than that. but it should be, it'd be weird if you were any shorter than that. what you wanna do is LOWER the table in panel 3 and 4 (see how it's up at their elbow level)
still, honestly youre getting close to overthinking.. something nobody is gonna notice.
>>
>>81272711
That IS easier... fixed now!

>>
>>81272904
now i mean.. in panel 1, the table height is also kind of high, it seems to go up to their waists. but.. some of that is short cartoon legs. so don't worry too much about it.
i will say it's a little odd how the furries seem to have big heads in the first panel, but later their heads are relatively small. so i dunno if those are the 'big mascot head' furries or not.

Panel 1 doesn't seem too bad. Even if comic guy doesn't have cartoonishly short legs like the furries, he's not outrageously tall (like half a head taller than them), though the table seems pretty tall in comparison to the furries. Maybe they're just short.
If anything bothers me, it's probably how the top of the fursuit's snouts and heads are visible, despite being above the horizon.
Panels 3 and 4 do have a perspective problem. If the viewer is at the height of the table, you should be able to see the underside of the characters and comics guy should be lower because he's farther away, but if the viewpoint is at the height of their eyes, the table surface should be visible.
The last panel feels really flat for the same reason - if we're below the table top, his hands should be obscured, if we're above it, the surface should be visible. Being exactly at that height feels really awkward.
>>
>>81273553
>Being exactly at that height feels really awkward.

might want to change the wording from "is that you thomas?" to just "t-tomas?" it conveys the same meaning but the stutter shows surprise/nervousness and the informal question shows the kid considered them close and casual

also the last panel the tomas' pose in the flashback is a bit wonky, and his ear as a ghost is causing a tangent with the panel, might want to just have both ears protrude the borders

hitting 'prev' from the main page goes to the 'undefined' url, which is the same as the 'comic' url you get to when you click archives.
prev seems to work fine on the past pages, but on those past pages, hitting 'today' takes you to that same 'undefined' archive page but with more junk in the URL
looks like you have some sorting out to do
>>
>>81277680
I have to allow scripts on your site to properly read it, which in my book is a major strike against it. A webcomic doesn't need scripts in order to be properly read.
>>

Its an issue with the coding, I think. There are very few comic templates for squarespace out there to choose from.

I have no experience in coding so I just linked "Prev" to the archive because it was originally providing an error page. This was just a jury rig solution.

>>81288514
not much experience i'm afraid, but I know a thing or two.. for one thing, plushes are never cost-effective. unless you're HUGE you won't be able to get someone to want them enough to pay what they cost
posters are cheap, but again you have to get someone to REALLY like your comic before they're gonna be into the idea of buying one. you can, however, sell arts and prints at a medium-high popularity level finding a good printer is another thing entirely.
places that print merch for you do tend to have mugs but i can't imagine why. do people want those? i dunno. i always wished i could get my art printed on folders. folders are great! you can put other art in them.
But for the most cost-effective stuff you go with stickers, keychains, buttons. Those you can get a decent deal on and hand them out and people will actually kinda enjoy them.

Oh shit I just woke up and my eyes are all crusty and took me a while to notice you played around with a couple of styles. It's nice to have that wide range and able to do that sometimes. I'm working on it.
I'm a fan, tell me where I can read more.

>>81290244
Honestly, what the guy said about cockroaches would be a little too much detail, but the one thing that bothered me, (I struggle with title/logos and background a lot, oh and coloring) would be that the word Urchin has too many jagged edges, like you dragged your pen up and down a lot. Maybe smooth out the edges? That's just me and don't listen to me though. I do enjoy the title and if ever I want a title I'll go to you. (Or try to learn myself)

Speaking of learning, where the fuck can I learn to color?
My entire life I've had the pen to paper even in class, where I would flunk classes for not paying attention 'cause I was drawing. 25 now and I never colored for jack.

Ah, coffee is made.
The extent of my coloring for a drawfag thing.

I got a weird idea the other day. I have a lot of story ideas in my head, all for different comics. Well, I though of ways that I could link the comics together so the readers know they take place in the same universe.
Is this too much of a stretch? (I know im getting really ahead of myself but I like to plan out my stories)
>>
>>81295729
Make sure you don't accidentally limit your stories by doing so. For example, if in one story the protagonist is a wizard, everyone will expect magic to work the same in all the other comics as it does in his and will feel cheated if it doesn't. Or someone might wonder why the protagonist from comic X doesn't show up in comic Y to help save the day, when the story works much better if the protagonist of Y works alone. It might also rob the story of oomph if there's a big enough scale difference - like, sure, Y's sister has been kidnapped by vampires, but who even cares about that when X is saving the entire universe from Cthulhu monsters at the same time?

That said, it's not like you can't do it, just consider the costs and benefits of having all your stories take place in the same universe.
>>
Bump. I gotta wtch this when I get home.
>>
anyone care to share their be all end all lessons/links on perspective?
>>
>>81295965
Yeah I know what you mean.
What I have planned is that the end of some stuff will tie in by giving hints to the next story. I only plan on having a handful of characters actually cross with other storylines.
But I see how having that can be a big mess it I set myself up for it

I've always been good at newspaper comic styles. I don't LIKE them, but they're so easy to me. Just a lot of symbols to memorize, which my robotic-ass brain loves. my comic was originally intentionally made of symbols in the same way, mimicking sprite comics. then over time tried to branch out

well I was thinking powerpuff girl style cockroaches, just an oval with a T on the back and two antennae, and maybe tiny stick legs poking out if even that.
I think the jagged edges of the lettering are meant to evoke a 'paintbrush on wood' look
>>
>>81295965
This is very good advice
HOWEVER
I think shared universes can work VERY well with 'tiers' as it were. nobody wonders why spider-man never/rarely showed up to fight dormammu, because that's dr strange's territory. in my comic, wizards handle cosmic shit. powerful superheroes handle big monster shit. regular martial artists handle thieves and thugs. nobody really expects them to intrude on each others' rackets

Character design for a short film. Is there anything I could improve on? I know the arms are a bit long and in a weird position, this is kinda a "t-pose"-type thing

A little info:
Short film takes place millennia in the future
The character is an immortal warrior spurred on by his undying desire to get his copy of Mario Galaxy back from a girl he lent it to in high school (who has now become the immortal god-empress of the world)
Right arm is a wooden mechanical arm, spins like a drill and can shoot out on a chain
Right leg is also mecha but it doesn't really do anything cool
>>
>>81311490
His head is so big it could get really awkward to pose him for action scenes without cheating. Like, he can't get his elbow above his head.
>>
>>81311299
HOLD UP LIL HOMIE.
That's kind of cool to see you do things different than me. I see the empirical evidence before my dick.
I normally always start with dialogue then draw, but my style's a little off. I feel when I write then draw, I can really draw the emotion.
Also that's my ex gf's routine. Are you fucking my ex gf?

the punchline could use a liiitttle work. i couldnt read it til i enlarged it, so i almost thought she was saying 'why must you trample on my dreams'
i suppose 'no of course not, that would be stupid...' is a little too cliche

i had to look up the einherjar to get that part, though the joke works even if you don't. though it is an odd situation, the premise of joining the valkyries to escort the honored dead to the place of fighting and shit, and thinking you were going to be joining in on that fighting.. i almost expect a little tiny word balloon like "i thought they'd invite me afterwards.."
>>
>>81311490
huh. very WindWakery. I'd still play around with the proportions a bit more, right now it's weird how most of the body is pretty well in proportion except suddenly tinylegs. like in other words, it's weird if your legs are the same length as your torso, you know? like you cant pull your knees up to your chest because they wouldn't go up high enough. thinking about poses is the best way to think about proportions and make sure they don't get TOO out of hand

the mechanical arm.. is pretty awesome, but i'd change the part that's just a ribbed tube.
his hair's kind of interesting.. with the flippy-out side bits and his general facial shape, it reminds me of Miss Hathaway from Beverly Hillbillies.. I feel like if you modified his hairline shape a bit and tweaked the sides, it'd be a lot more masculine, and really show off that awesome forelock and ponytail he's rocking.

anyway i like that plot, a lot.
and not that he's wearing the same outfit he wore when he lost his limbs i assume, but it's a bit odd that it's taken battle damage on his OTHER side.

Well, it's a story about a miserable girl and a retarded girl who stumble upon something they really shouldn't have stumbled upon. Things start to worsen as they're chased by occultists, and the eldritch beings they summon.

It's gonna be mostly a "slice of life" comedy in the beginning.

The story is actually subject to change right now so it might actually evolve into purely SOL.
>>
>>81312546
Oh, and we don't really have a name for it yet. I was thinking maybe "Off-Kilter" but as some anon pointed out it doesn't really sound appealing.

>Your shadowing looks different
i guess you mean the actual comic page? is a brush with watered down ink, still on trial-error to have some "prague race" tier values quality, that was one of the first attempts and it's a fairly small panel so i think it kind of looks odd.

the thing with that is that i have to do the flat inks first and then add the values in somewhat a first layer/try. it's really infuriating sometimes but i too had a couple great pages with just a texture that's near to impossible the digital way-

I hope i can master that before i have to implement pencil shadowing in the pages too (wich looks nice but i think will make scanning pages an ultra chore with the scanner glass getting dirty)

seriously. the traditional tarasque has a sabertoothed lion's head, six bear legs, a spiky carapace, and some kind of long segmented stingy tail that doesnt sound scorpiony but more lizardy. also glowing fiery eyes i think? and huge as fuck. but here we seem to have the addition of... double tiny eyes in huge sockets, unsettling human teeth, hamster ears... the legs look like a fat lizard or something.. it's VERY interesting and pretty unique while still recognizable

i mean we've had a lot of shit in fantasy like 'this is a horse except really a bird' or 'these are cows but actually look, giant guinea pigs'
but i can't remember a horse that was really a cow. though this appears to be the reverse. like, it's obviously being used as a mount / pack animal, but from its build it's a draft animal. clearly a laborer, not a runner. Then again sometimes you dont need a horse, you want a donkey. it depends where you're going

>>
>>81317574
good stuff man. i love the cartoon hairy head lump, i love the mistaken assumptions she makes.. i love that she's still useful despite the initial 'maybe i won't be needed after all' bit. i also think this is an impressive length for a crossover comic.
interesting you made her look a bit more like her younger flashbacky self, not quite as fullfigured, no visible lips.. it's interesting how you translated her into your style
page 3's first panel looks a bit wonky but that's one of the hardest poses to get right
>>
>>81317473
bottom right panel should say "what terrible timing"

>>81317574
and last panel should be "I did get a little something for her" or "I did get something for her"

but it's a pretty cool crossover
>>
>>81317826
Oh, the lips are coming in the colours, since the colour itself isn't very dark, like Selena's, I rather not do the lineart for it.
If it's the first panel pose, I know the arms were giving me a headache while doing the pencils.
That pose is a wild card, sometimes I do it right, sometimes, I don't.

>>81317853
Noted, thanks for the feedback. I also noticed the last narration dialogue doesn't have it's dialogue box, but this was the sample to show I got it done, with colour anything related to text will be fixed, so this feedback is really appreciated.

i like the idea of it slowly developing into something else though. slice of life is quite overdone.

but i think it should take some time to get to that point. really make it slow and subtle, have it creep up on the reader. you know it hurts? it got really popular because of a twist like that.

Stats time!

March was a banner month for my site, setting single-day bandwidth usage records as well as setting a monthly bandwidth usage record. I was accepted into a webcomics collective that does cross-promotion through use of a widget on member sites and that was a huge boon to me. I can confidently say that I have at least a few dozen new readers as a result of that and that along, over the course of only a few weeks (you can pretty much figure out exactly when my membership of the group became public by looking at the stats there). I also received good boosts to readership through registering my comic on the Belfry comics listing, which resulted in 2-4 days of very good but steadily decreasing traffic, and from there on maybe 1-4 clicks a week that can be traced to new readers. I spent most of month solidly on pages 2 and 3 (mostly 3 but I jumped up to page 2 for a week or so thanks to the mid-month readership boost) and I've found that while being on page 2 gives a slightly higher number of clicks, page 3 still gives me a solid 5-20 clicks per day. I'm still not sure what causes the variation to be so extreme but it's often within that range, never below it and sometimes even above it. Being listed on Piperka provided a small but nice initial readership spike but I rarely get fresh clicks from it anymore (in the last 30 days I only received 2 clicks that were actually new readers).

I spent $0 on advertising in March. I don't plan on spending any more money on advertising at any point in the future. In fact, I now MAKE money from ads thanks to Project Wonderful. It's not much, but it's enough to pay the site bills plus a couple bucks at the end of the month. I'll be happy to answer any questions to the best of my abilities.

Anyone else got March stats they want to post?
>>
>>81338499
I forgot to add, having an art trade with another site also provided me a good number of clicks from (hopefully) new readers, and I'll be sure to try and do more with other comic sites in the future.

Social media really only just in the last week or so started to pick up. Before March, I don't think I really got any clicks from Twitter. Social media still continues to underperform but I'll keep on doing it.

Holy fucking shit why is choosing a color scheme for a character so fucking hard, I do one for the protagonist, the other for the female lead, but then there are 2 characters left to form the fucking quartet and no matter what I choose they never look good together, they just don't.
>>
>>81340450
hmm, maybe we can help. it's pretty fun and easy playing color wheel roulette

>>
>>81340450
Could you show us what you've got? Always much simpler to help with concrete things.

Do they have to all have individual color schemes? If they're a quartet, maybe they'd all share the same color scheme, but maybe the detail colors are different or they have different colors of the shared scheme dominate.
>>
>>81340450
Pick a neutral color, black, white, gray or silver, then pick a colorful color, and then balance the two colors so that one is darker than the other.

Josephine and Arla are already good to go in my opinion. Something's off with Ben that I can't quite put my finger on and for Vinny, the yellow and the red are just clashing badly.
>>
>>81341071
Josephine was supposed to be blue, maybe I can still make it work but I'm afraid it would clash too much with the hair, Vinny I'm literally throwing things on the wall and seeing what fits, because he's literally wearing Doomguy's Armor, making it green would only make it obvious, I would like to know what's wrong with Ben though, everytime I look at his finished design I'm half satisfied by what I see but there's always something banging behind my head saying ''make him red blue and white! America!'' for some reason
>>
>>81340903
too much yellow i reckon. you've left out blue and purple entirely, in favor of all yellows reds and greens.
josephine is dressed as fox mccloud, i dunno if that's intentional.
basically, bright colors have no place in shoulderpads or pants. or shoulderpants. other than that no real problem
>>
>>81340903

Vinny:
Either make the shoulder pads a different, darker color or get rid of them altogether (if you don't get rid of them, I'd suggest making them a different shape so they don't seem as much like Arla's shoulder pads - something rounder would fit better with his rounder silhouette. Asymmetry?).

Josephine:
I think the green-on-teal is a little samey. Personally I'd make the boots and belt black, but any darker color would be good.
Desaturate the hair a little?

Ben:
The screaming orange of his pants is really overpowering and distracting. I'd save the orange for smaller details - maybe change around the orange and the light grey parts?

Arha:
I feel like she'd work better if the purple eyelids were a bit more red.

I've tried slightly different colors this time, as well as a small ''color guide'' where I'm trying another outfit for Josephine as well as just having Rodimus Prime instead of Ben because sometimes I need to return to my roots, in any case, I want to make these designs work before I can change them.

see? that's much nicer on the eyes. plus they comprise a nice array of colors.. blue, purple, red, green is great for a team.
now if it was me, i'd make a few little tweaks:
>Switching up the pants so they arent both wearing black ones
>increasing the saturation of the greyblue bits on arla so theyre a little more intense
>shifting ben's shirt a bit away from brown-orange-brick more towards the pink side of red (not all the way) so it ends up more cherry.
but those are totally just personal preferences

also didnt mention yet but i like these designs and i'm curious to see what kinda space dinosaur adventures they have

the color guide is particularly nice, i think josephine's an improvement there. the others are all about the same (lol rodimus)
>>
>>81344399
>>Switching up the pants so they arent both wearing black ones
It'd be a pretty nice way of tying the team together if they all had black pants though.

>>
>>81344603
if they ALL do sure. are they supposed to be wearing uniforms? the dinos' outfits definitely look like they belong together, while the humans... kind of do. but sorta dont. theyre a little too general

There's no "work on your art" thread and someone has already asked about a logo so I'll post here.
I need a short little logo animation to accompany some animations I'm doing and here's one I've been considering and whipped up a very rough draft today. The idea is that there's alien runes being "Translated" visually. The final version would be a lot more staticy and noisey like a computer screen in ALIEN and would spend more time on the "finished" word and actually have a background and more visual effects. This is just an animation test.
>>
>>81345991
if youre going for the more staticky change, then they probably shouldn't be so similar if you want actual immersion. that's just unnecessary extra work that doesnt make sense in-universe.

>>
>>81346703
Sufficiently advanced science is indistinguishable from magic.
Sufficiently explained magic is indistinguishable from science.

From a narrative standpoint, soft science fiction and fantasy are basically the same genre.
>>
>>81346703
Hey, I'm actually doing that in my setting.

The way my world's magic and science work is that magic technically encompasses everything, from solid matter to energy, and that all actions/reactions/etc. are magic. "Magic" as a term is mostly shorthand for saying "being able to control the elements/energy directly" rather than "picking up a stick" or "cooking something", even though in universe, all three examples are magic.

Science, as a result, is largely the same in real life, except instead of just studying things like how anatomy and biology works, what different chemical reactions can be efficient for fuel, and so on, different applications and properties of "supernatural" magic is tested in much the same way. This process can lead to inventions that can have both familiar technological processes and have a magical enchantment that boosts that process to be much more proficient.

Now, this is only how I am choosing to handle it. In your comic, magic could be a studied "art" that runs on rules counter to the rules of the universe's physics, thus making science and magic somewhat incompatible. Overall, though, its your choice on how to handle it.
>>
>>81346703
You can do both, but one has to be more nuanced than the other or else both elements might blend and it becomes a mess.
>>
>>81346703
gargoyles did it pretty damn well. i like it if magic is some kind of force that is simply understood to DO stuff. i mean, right now, mainstream scientists are treating gravity like it's this substance you can have, that's being oozed out of things. that's fucking nonsense. to say that reality ITSELF is just an ooze, that can be swirled up by something else that you call magic, is pretty sensible by comparison. i mean black holes certainly seem to be a case of reality sorta piling up on itself so hard that it breaks.
>>
>>81346962
yeah this is nice. but i'd keep the sleeves as they were.
>>
>>81347271
Like the turtleneck? Okay, but I think I might have lost my way with it, I've never seen a shirt where the insides are a different color from outside just so the sleeves can be a different color, even less a military-esque shirt
>>
>>81347417
i suppose it's not very militaryish, more sportsy. howbout you turn the sleeves back to red, AND add a chevron of red across the upper torso, connecting the shoulders. or reverse it and make those the gold parts with the bottom part red.
>>
>>81346996
That's what I was thinking. While writing about magic, I could make up stuff like "Frazer's Law of Sympathy" or "Crowley's Equation" or whatever, like it's another branch of science, but more difficult to control, since the outcome of magical experimentation has greater risks than science.

>>81346996
>>81347108
>>
>>81347746
one thing i hate in fantasy settings, i can tell you this, is when magic is inexplicably way more intelligent and independent than it should be. like, you just cast a 'bring this to life' spell and it instantly knows the most logical and creative way to make this menorah act like a person. it's waving its two outermost candlesticks around perfectly like arms, talking with the middle one.. cracking jokes in perfect yiddish.. even without the issue of conciousness, dumb blind magic shouldnt be able to just DO that. not unless you carefully focused your mind / the spell / whatever on exactly what you wanted it to do.
or when a spell breaks just because someone died.. why? did it require their concentration that entire time?
that kinda shit
>>
>>81346703
All I know is I like them both when they're being put to good use.
Whether you're some kind of mad scientist or an apothecary, you should be serving your community (and making mad cash) by creating useful products. like anti-menstrual-cramp panties.. or antigravity brooches for busty women

>magic is inexplicably way more intelligent and independent than it should be.
Nah, nah - magic running on bellyfeel, truthiness and narrativium rather than actual logic is one of the best things about it.
>>
>>81348388
well i disagree. yes it can do anything, but 'anything' still can't be creative and intelligent independent of a conciousness. how can magic itself have an imagination?
unless it HAS a conciousness in which case fine, have people wonder about that, whisper rumors, have religions about it..

I like it, I tried the chevron as you said, but I'm yet to see it in action, I gotta try all sorts of poses to see if the color scheme works
>>
>>81348466
>how can magic itself have an imagination?
Because it's magic, not physics. Not saying you can't have a sciencey-sounding explanation - maybe it's unconsciously shaped by the caster, (the menorah moves like it does because that's how the caster was expecting it to - if you got an octopus to cast the same spell, you'd get a different result) maybe it's affected by ambient magical soul-fields (like an animated menorah talking Yiddish because it's been handled by a lot of Yiddish-talking Jews over the years) or maybe the source of the magic colors the result (the menorah has a sense of humor because the spell is powered by the trickster god), but things that aren't people acting like people is one of the most fundamental traits of magic.

Like, the basic idea of a spell incantation is that the magician is ordering something around and telling it what to do by appealing to its anthropomorphized spiritual nature.

It seems like a waste to not give magic a personality.

>>81349683
i'm just saying there are things even magic can't create, and it seems like 'information' is one of them. information has to COME from somewhere. so at least give it an explanation. those explanations you said are great. but if the magic wasn't cast until AFTER it spent time in contact with someone, then it seems like it shouldn't know anything yet. it should have to grow that over time.

I don't think those text boxes need to be quite that saturated a yellow. It's fine for the daytime panel, but all the other panels are predominantly blue and the contrast is kind of eye-searing.

Also, man, I know it's part of the joke that the dad is totally oblivious, but he's not really got any redeeming character traits so far and the obliviousness is getting to the point where it's beginning to seem like willful negligence. Are we gonna get to see the side of him that made Janice care about him anytime soon?

Also, is Miss Melee ever gonna change her name to Mrs. Melee?

Yes we will, a glimpse later in this issue but mainly you're going to see what you want to see in issue 3 (which has been in final draft version for a few months now). Stay tuned!
>is Miss Melee ever gonna change her name to Mrs. Melee?
Heavens, no! Two reasons:
1. it could possibly compromise her secret identity if her foes knew she was married
2. "Miss Melee" rolls off the tongue far better than "Mrs. Melee" with its extra syllable does

You idiots have no idea what a Tumblr nose is. "Tumblr" nose is when the nose is overly darkened to represent the slight blush that naturally occurs on the tip of it. "This character has a large nose and I don't like it :(" is a different grievance, and if you think >>81314105 is too large you're just being a picky asshole about legitimate stylization of a character with a big nose.

>>81369896
THIS is the closest thing to a Tumblr nose anyone's posted so far.

>>
>>81370266

>>
>>81370120
Oh, and I'll also point out that "this >>81369827 black character has a broad nose and this isn't like my animes" is a fucking hilarious grievance and >>81368808 was clearly done to make the character more cutesy because she's a pretty woman and having a larger nose makes her look less anime and you fucking waifu-hounds are as transparent as glass.

Like, come back with those artists whose noses take up 3/4ths of their characters faces and I'll grant you the annoyance, but right now I just see folks having a hard time getting it up to girls with noses that aren't dots and making that the artist's problem.

every aspiring comic artist should pick up a copy of sharknife as a guide on how NOT to write fighting comics

goddamn its awful

his art has so much potential but its lost in this book

basically you read 200 pages of fighting with NO characterization
you dont care what happens to anyone because you dont know who they are

writing compelling characters is actually really easy
the biggest rule for this is to base characters personalities DIRECTLY off someone you like
re-create those moments in life that made you like someone
and the reader will like those characters as you liked those people

its really not hard

have simple moments with characters so when those tough times come you want them to pull through

remember everyone in your life is an archetype
breakdown how and what archetype they are
and exaggerate it

He's right in bringing up Sharknife as an example of a flawed action comic, because there's nothing wrong with using poor material as an example.

>>81370543
's problem is being too specific with their advice and recommending absolutes that don't always hold true.

...buuuut, in their place, I'll trot out an old /co/ favorite. "I Kill Giants" does an excellent job with its one major fight because it was properly set up, ties to the core conflict perfectly, and the characters are fleshed out. It and, in a non-comics example, FLCL are basically an entirely different genre than the type of action comic we're all skirting around when Sharknife "just happened" to be brought up, but they're both examples of anon's point being done well. An external conflict will often be weightless in the absence of an internal or interpersonal conflict.

There is a post of mine here, but that one isn't it.

And that gif you're referring to is more vaporwave than the hyper 90s nonsense I'm into. Vaporwave is great and all, but often times its content is all this 2deep4u malarky instead of in your face ballyhoo.

Observe the first 60 seconds of this commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QW4Z2unhNg

That's just plain fun and it's a shame that kind of talent typically only gets picked up for commercials. (See also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pi5qoxxQpMY ) A still strawberry with VHS wear is fine, I suppose. But it's not my scene, maaaaan.

Dedicated troll.

Welcome to the threads, sir.
>>
>>81370859
the point in me bringing up something i didnt like was to introduce to you (and others) something done incorrectly

the reason i didnt bring up something i did enjoy is because-
we already know what we enjoy!
we own those books!
we return to those stories!
we know examples of what works because we have poured our hard earned cash into those stories!

me bringing up sharknife was.....
i just wanted to point out material that is being released by lesser known creators in hopes that others may not fall into the same mistakes/trap doors they made

cory obviously likes action
and sadly
thats probably all he is seeing when he looks at a book

i honestly think everyone should own a copy of it or at least have read it as a reminder of how important characterization is

there are some people here in this thread that think swinging fists at eachother and vague dialog works.

as a creator you treat your creation much like your child

but dont think im going to give a damn about looking at your wallet photos if i dont know a damn thing about them

what people need to learn is that this isn't inherently true, it's just how some people feel. and IT IS OKAY that they think that
and it's racist
and it's okay to be a little racist. it's natural to find your own race more attractive, and prefer its features. what we're seeing right now is a weird bizarro version of the 'you're not allowed to draw anyone like a golliwogg even if you draw white people equally weirdly'
it's also an extension of tall poppy syndrome, where any good looks are demonized, being in power is treated like evidence of a crime. that's been going on since fucking barbie. and just like bashing barbie gave us bratz, bashing anime gave us tumblrface.
