This is accurate, the pauses have been hell. Another reason there's disdain for act 6 (and act 5 mind you) is the shift from a focus on sburb, to characters. sure, reading it for the first time is cool, but after a year or two of discussion you start to realize that the forgoing of explanations on sburb as a medium really grates.

The whole LE story is nice, but I think everybody would have preferred a straightforward session that could have been completed in less than 7 years if they thought about it.

Yeah, I didn't really think that Act 6 was all that bad, save for the godawful teenage angst towards the beginning. After GAME OVER, I think it picked up a bit, although it wasn't as good as it was in Act 4/5.

What killed Homestuck was the insistence on having every new character tie into the narrative. The Midnight Crew intermission was great because it did it's own thing and eventually tied in, but wasn't a necessary read (it is easily one of the best parts of HS though and it is totally necessary for you to enjoy yourself.)

I think it was very neat how the intermission and alternian exile narrative is never explicably stated but you slowly realize, Sure you can spot the signs, but on a first readthrough you don't really realize until act 5 act 2.

I'm one of a handful of oldfags that liked Act 6 just as fine overall as the earlier half of the comic. A couple of the complaint towards the act, like lesser focus on Sburb mechanics and seeming lack of tension, I don't think it's really true so much as it's just been a really slow build-up towards the final pages, where major shit's going to go down.

Honestly? They aren't that important. I'd rather not know in explicit detail and get to fill in on my own through inference and imagination.

What I consider to be more frustrating is that we didn't see any new classpects pop up with the dancestors/alpha kids. Just to fucking throw a wrench in this idea that there are 12 of each (+Lord/Muse), which so many people seem so comfortable with. Give me hope that there are more out there, that the SBURB we have seen is only a sliver of the potential for the game.

I am rereading the comic for the first time, and I am now in early act 4, and I have to say, I am starting to realize why tumblr abandoned this comic. Everyone keeps calling each other retarded and gay unironically, and there is an oddly large number of jokes about ethnic weddings.

Another thing I notice is that while many people point out that Act 6 shifted the focus of the comic from Sburb to characters, there is another major shift. Act 1 up to the Intermission focus on Sburb as a game, and Acts 4 and 5 focus on Sburb as a world.

Trolls never have a distinct presence in Homestuck. They have their initial convos with the kids but never meet up. No getting on the boat for three years. Nepeta got really shafted as far as character interaction and screentime went. Her first appearance had her established as being one of Terezi's good friends and yet she barely batted an eye at seeing Nepeta's fucking headless corpse on the ground.

Hussie's priorities have obviously changed since he began HS. What started as a wacky video game inspired comedy is has been a YA epic with a lot of character drama for the majority of it's run.

This meant characters originally meant not to have deep character arcs had them thrust upon them. I reckon if he had preplanned the story of HS to be a story like what it is now, the character's arcs would be a whole lot more coherent.

The 'make it up as you go along' method of writing created more problems. The pre-scratch characters kind of became stagnant after Act 5, so Hussie had to put in a bunch of extra shit to create conflict. Therefore: Terezi, Gamzee, Dave and Karkat drama, and Rose becoming an alcoholic.

Another thing pre-planning would have helped with is the comic's themes. At the moment it seems to be heading towards some kind of epiphany on what the 'self' is. Whether alternate versions of each character truly are them, and if you should be responsible for the actions of the other versions, or if they are different people entirely because they have had different experiences, or most likely a combination of the two. Davepeta and Jasprose, are part of this, (Vriska) also links in and whatever Terezi actually did in remember is also probably relevant. Different characters provide different opinions on this, and I don't think it's just Hussie being inconsistent with his views. This is a main par of A6A6I5, which I don't think is essentially terrible, it's just really poorly executed and the art takes a big downfall. What is said in 500 pages could have been said in 200 or less. Less Vriska fellating would have been nice too.

But before Act 6 the main theme was more about fate and inevitability, and how time travel would affect that. 'He is already here' and all that. I think these can be unified into a satisfying conclusion, but whether they will is up to Hussie.

Rose was clearly getting paired off with Kanaya. Jade and Jane are related to him. Vriska was dead and also dating that alt John. Terezi was in the middle of that Dave/Karkat love triangle (this was before the humans can do trollmance thing). Only relevant female character left was Roxy.

On the trollmance thing, people are saying it's a retcon, but I don't think it was. Word of god has always been that it's only the fact that the quadrants are classified as romance that was alien, but the feelings are essentially the same as human ones.

But I don't think blackrom Johnrezi will ever be official. It will probably just be teases and then Terezi will die or they will be separated or something.

This is the version of Equius that I always imagined was true.

I also hate how fanartists completely missed this joke within his character when they would draw him as some tall overbuilt hulk. If anything, Sollux or Eridan are likely tallest out of all of them.

I remember seeing a ChatLog done by the charecters. It was supposed to bring up the subject of the Saccharine Doppelgangers. (What they called Trickster Mode)

It was 4-5 RP-ers, with 2 of them trying to discuss strategy/observations/sightings of the Tricksters, which was great, and what I wanted to see.

However, every 4th fucking post was "Omg guys I hate the SD's please stop talking about them you're scaring me OMG OMG OMG" with some inane quirk like replacing all the M's with 2 N's or something. Said player also had two "friends" who were agreeing with them and basically saying "Guys stop you're scaring her."

Like, STFU you stupid RPer, I want to learn about the mechanics of the Glitch Sburb Universe, not your fucking OC you cooked up in 3 minutes who's got a backbone as solid as wet noodles.

THEN I saw some Tumblr-conversation (I never understood how Tumblr works with the reblogs and stuff) which basically had some guy saying "We made this RP to explore charecters, not the setting we're in. You don't read Harry Potter to learn more about Hogwarts, you read it to see what Harry, Hermione and Ron are doing!"

I think it's cool that Sburb continually accounts for and propogates Lord English as its grim reaper for long since past sessions.

But I think it's also dumb, that despite his influence, English only pulls influence from three sessions.

and I can't remember why he's the villain when the role he's performing is "natural" and already accounted for sburb.

So far what we (seem to) know about LE:

Caliborn got his powers by beating Yaldabaoth.

LE was first created by sealing the souls of Gamzee, Arquius and Caliborn into Lil Cal.

Lil Cal was an ectobiological parent to Doc Scratch, who was created by Snowman.

LE emerged from Scratch due to a code on a server in the furthest ring that summoned him at the end of the universe.

He recruited the Handmaid.

He then travelled back in time to fuck with Alternia enough to ensure his own existence, and possibly at the same time was the leader of the felt, who got to A2 somehow.

At some point (possibly automatically) he recruited the Condesce when she killed the Handmaid who was given some kind of power to travel between universes.

He started trying to destroy the furthest ring to try and get to Calliope.

Not much about him being a natural process of Sburb. He's a bunch of players, not a game construct.

The main problem with LE is that he never causes that many direct threats. He's not even really a conspirator since he's too dumb to do that. He fucks shit up but it's all indirect.
The 'he's already here' shit is a cool concept for a villain. The kids are esssentially fighting against inevitability itself. But LE should have at least killed one major character before Meenahbound, or we have no reason to care. Caliborn: Enter was a step in the right direction but it wasn't enough.
