There was almost no way there wasn't going to be a snafu between Ford and Stan. At least this way everyone was able to appreciate what Stan was willing to put on the line.

Some really good action and pretty good feels towards the end, but the majority of the actual PLOT was driven forward by contrivance and bullshit, the major sacrifice that saved the day is COMPLETELY devalued and made a joke.

The best parts of the episode were small visual references and callbacks.

Cliched writing. The narrative never acknowledged what a dick Ford was. Wrecking Stan's character, who always stepped up when it came to family even if he was selfish at heart, to cause contrived conflict, somewhat anticlimactic ending to the danger.

The only part I truly enjoyed was the happy end because it was all sweet. The rest of the episode was disappointingly lame. Even with all that, they never got back the "wow" factor of NWHS.

But hell, I liked it. A fitting end to a great show. And I can't believe I predicted the hat swap.

Bill is still alive and trapped in that stone effigy of himself/10. But really? Maybe an 8. Pretty enjoyable.

The big dumb mecha fight was better than I expected, and the friendship circle aspect of the Wheel wasn't overplayed. Dipper's motivational friendship speech happened after the crisis passed, thank fuck.

It was nice to see a lot of fan predictions pay off (Bill's eye as his weak point, the memory gun as the means of his defeat, etc.). Sure, the resolution between Stan and Ford was shallow, and I would have liked more of Dipper and Mabel and less of the townspeople, but the writers did the best they could with the runtime they had.

A lot of the exposition scenes felt phoned in, especially the cold open. Stan regaining his memories nigh-instantly was disappointing. Although I'm pleased Mabel and Dipper can return to the town and the weirdness wasn't erased from it, the fact that everything was restored to exactly how it was before felt like just a little too much.

There's loads of sequel potential.
I'm very happy.

Where were their parents? I assumed they'd step off the bus when Mabel mentioned them. What's Dipper's name? Why was everybody acting like it was impossible for Dipper and Mabel to return next summer except for after Dipper read Wendy's card?

Some nice touching parts in the end. Nothing too unfunny. Nice action. Nice subversion to the power of friendship wheel thing but still... didn't feel very finale-ish because of all the shit they set up and/or hinted at and didn't resolve.

So that was HOW many scrapped god damn plotlines? Especially the fucking Stan - Bill connection thing, Hirsch goes out of the way to push similarities between the two and repeated lines, and then goes out of the way to make sure that they never meet face to face and then.... NOTHING. FUCKING NOTHING.

Fuck, the fingers on all my hands aren't enough to count all the shit he gave up on, he fucking GAVE UP after 2A, just completely gave up.

The pinnacle of the series was NWHS, it should have ended there or I would have been willing to wait another five years for an actual good ending but this was nothing that I wanted.

Scrapped plots, no build up, no actual SUSPENSE, final battle was the epitome of anticlimax, what the fuck is this monster of the week? Fuck, if you compare this to NWHS or DAMVTF it looks run of the mill as shit. People being stupid for the sake of the episode instead of building on shit already there, a "sacrifice" that wasn't actually anything, I could go on for hours about how much of a shitty ending that was.

It's not amazing but is good, and gets better + comes to have a real plot after beginning with mostly episodic one-offs. Maintains continuity even early on though. Personally I'd give the first season a 7.5 or 8/10, with some episodes worse than that and some better. The season finale in particular was pretty strong and not what the first episode leads you to believe the show will do.

I think season 2 will be better than the first because the crew keeps saying it was mainly "setup," and the season indeed ended with ~3 plots still left hanging.
