Here's a Guide I made.

Protip: It's not called EU anymore, just Canon/Legends.

Recommendations:

First and foremost, the Cartoons. TCW came directly from George, and Rebels is brought to us from Dave Filoni, who Lucas has called his IRL Padawan.

They heavily expand on the characters and worlds established in the movies, that didn't get enough attention. Especially TCW.

Then Comics. Thankfully, we are literally less than 1 year into the Comics, so there isn't much at all to catch up on. You could probably read it all in a few hours.

If you want recommendations however, then Vader/Kanan/Star Wars are ongoing and are probably the most important.

Son of Dathomir gives us a little tease of what happened to Maul after TCW (but still leaves it very open ended, so dont go in expecting a climactic end to his story)

Shattered Empire connects Episode 6, the Uprising game, and Aftermath, all together, and gives some small nods and connections to TFA.

And then books.

Lost Stars is high up in everyone's recommendation list. It essentially retells the OT from the perspective of some Imperials and Rebels, and climaxes with the Battle of Jakku, explaining why its a junkyard in Episode 7.

Lords of the Sith gives some much appreciated expansion on Vader and Sheev, as well as more from Cham Syndulla, a character from TCW, and Hera Syndulla's father. A New Dawn is a good book to start with too, as it is a prequel to Rebels, as well as an expansion on the outcomes of the Kanan comic.

Dark Disciple is an important book to read once you finish TCW. It's the first book to include some pretty major events occurring to some fairly big characters, and proved that Lucasfilm arent just saving all the big things for the movies.

Ask away if you have any questions.

Dude has a point. Whatever else George delivered on a captivating vision, an impressive diorama of the galaxy pre-Empire in which to encapsulate a story that was sadly lacking until TCWs helped patch it back together and fill it out.

It also pushed the boundaries of what was technically possible on the screen and created a revolution in effects technology that dominated the decade to come.

TFA, sadly, did neither. But it delivered on a story that people enjoyed, however much the plot points were surgically lifted from ANH. It's flawed yet serviceable. Let's hope they can keep going in a good direction.

So here's a thing I've been meaning to talk to you guys about since last week when I saw the movie.

For the people that like Kylo Ren, one of the reasons why people like him is because we never had a villain that struggled with their dark and light side.

But isn't that Anakin's (and to some extent Luke's) journey? We especially see this in Anakin during RotS after he joins Palpatine, and later in Vader during ESB and RotJ.

Luke also displays this during RotJ with him finally embracing the light side after his duel but he was a hero so he doesn't count I guess.

So what gives?
>>
>>78399359
No. Stop it. Kylo Ren needs a qt gf to save him, he isn't gay.
>>
>>78399514

I was thinking something following the concept of Kylo's FABULOUS hair being a huge key to his dark side...and his sensitive side.

I don't think he is gay, but most measurably a bi-sexual fuck boi.

General Hux might seek to one-up him, ending in a "YOU ARE NOT FABULOUS AS I!"
>>
>>78399497
People like him because his initial turn to the Dark Side was not shown.

He never did any good deeds so I don't buy into the shit that he was conflicted. The movie just tells not shows.
>>
>>78399581
I honestly don't think they handle it that much different. Driver is a good actor, but like Hayden he pretty much does the same thing where he either gets really angry and shouts or does the "stare"

Even when he kills Han he does a the same thing Anakin does after he helps kill Windu, but in a more calmer way.
>>
>>78399637

Nope, he was kept pretty much entirely a secret for TFA.

Next year there are two books (Aftermath: Life Debt & New Republic: Bloodlines) which may include Kylo stuff. It's still uncertain at this point though.

>>78399747
That is Season 5, Episode 1, I believe.

You should really pick the show back up, it got really damn good. I notice a lot of people falling off around Season 2 or 3, and its a real shame because that is where the show really starts to pick up.
>>
>>78399670
If you don't get it, you don't get it. But that is reflection on your understanding of the character and how he is portrayed. He is nicely fleshed out (especially for being in only one film) and was extremely compelling to watch. I was always looking forward to his scenes and theres a lot more to him than just not knowing which side he's on.

So correct me if I'm wrong but is this basically what happened in Episode 3?
>Palpatine sets Anakin up to think the Jedi don't trust him when they don't approve of his push for Anakin to join the council
>Palpatine sets it up that the Jedi will attack him
>he makes that attack appear as treason to Anakin with the excuse that they didn't tell Anakin because they didn't trust him
>part of this treason would be the Jedi destroying the senate (and killing Padme
>this sets Anakin (and the galaxy) on full 'fuck the Jedi' mode
>he then makes himself Emperor but keeps the senate because at the time Padme was still alive (Anakin would be pissed if he shafted Padme) also to make the shift from Republic to Empire less dramatic and jarring for the galaxy. Basically does what he did in 2 where he gets emergency powers to form the clone army, he gets emergency powers to do whatever he likes, but will have a senate to vote on things that he can then make an informed decision on based on what the galaxy wants done. Eliminates the problem with the old senate where they work when they work, and when they don't work he does what is needed anyways so the govt is better functioning than the Republic
>his whole selling point is 'the Jedi set up this was (Sifo Dyas making the clone army, Dooku creating the Seperatists) so they could take over the Republic, but we just barely avoided that so give me the power to really crack down on this bullshit war so we can have peace
>this is why the Rebellion is so hard to start up, because nobody sees it as legitimate after the official story of the Jedi treason didn't work out, and people think it's a Rebellion based on Jedi manipulation in the Clone Wars (which now that I think about it, I hope this makes people see the Galactic Civil War as concerning due to Luke's involvement, could be one of the reasons he became so sad, because nobody even trusts the Jedi after the Clone Wars)

Does anyone else feel like the "I HATE YOU!!!" line in Episode 3 was placed in the wrong order? It goes like this:
>Obi-Wan: "Not leave it in darkness!"
>Anakin: "I HATE YOU!!!"

When it should go like this:
>Obi-Wan: "Not leave it in darkness!"
>Obi-Wan: "You were my brother Anakin. I loved you"
>Anakin: "I HATE YOU!!!"
The "I HATE YOU!!!" feels like it should have been a response to Obi-Wan's "I loved you."

Why are Jedi considered a myth? I could at least understand people not believing in the Force, but the Jedi existed during Han's lifetime, Chewie probably told him a bunch of war stories about them.
>>
>>78399497
Anakin was built up as being some legendary chosen one badass jedi, but we never see it. All we see is a whiny brat getting smacked around by Dooku and Obi-Wan. We never see him do crazy shit that live up to his legend so we're disappointed by what we see.

With Kylo Ren, we start off seeing him catch a blaster bolt in mid-air, something that was never seen before in the movies. We know he's strong in the force and as the trilogy goes on, we know he will only become stronger.
>>
>>78401742

1. What makes you think Luke would tell anyone about the Sith? Even Han, his close friend, didn't know the word Sith, only the Dark Side.
2. Why would anyone believe them? To someone who isn't intimate with the knowledge of the force, Jedi and Sith are the same thing. Plus it could just be seen as some New Republic propaganda to demonize the old regime.

That is honestly no more cringe inducing than just looking at Kylo's unmasked pimply face.

Besides there is a key difference between them. Anakin is a virgin teen apprentice monk sworn to celibacy who is being blatantly hit upon by a 9/10. He acts like such. Kylo is supposed to be twenty-something chief lieutenant of a wannabe Galactic tyrant, a commander of men. He acts like a child.

Guess who is a shitty character here.

No. If you pay attention, his recurring character traits are observable there already.

But even if you exclude Ep.1, one of the very first things Anakin does in Ep.2 is jumping into a miles-deep abyss full of fast-moving objects because he just Force-sensed that this will allow him to land on Zam's speeder and catch her. If that is not badass as fuck, then what is? Sure, he's is not instantly good in everything, like Rey, and succeed everywhere, like Rey, but that is because he's not a Mary Sue like Rey.

My guess is that the Empire spent twenty years destroying or locking away every evidence proving the Jedi's existence. And in the current run of Star Wars comics, we see a Hutt crimelord who's a Jedi fanboy and collects every artefact (lightsabers, holocrons...) he can put his hand on, which is apparently illegal.

Luke's failed tentative to recreate the Jedi order must not have been enough to counter the Empire's still vivid propaganda.

Doesn't explain why a guy like Han Solo, who traveled to a bunch of planets, doesn't think they were real, especially when his best buddy fought alongside them in the Clone War.

>>

Oh, yeah, that makes more sense
>>
>>78404255
It kind of was. Before the Thrawn Trilogy people just assumed Star Wars was over. Without the Thrawn trilogy kickstarting the EU the bad reception of the prequels would have probably ended Star Wars. I'm a new canon fag and even I understand that just because the EU isn't canon doesn't mean it wasn't extremely important to Star Wars.
>>
I'm not even a Legendsfag, but the most disappointing part of Force Awakens was basically how it was a Cliffnotes adaption of the old EU.

I mean, I enjoyed it, it wasn't bad.

But we've seen Han's son turn evil. We've seen the Deathier Star. We've seen a bunch of badasses that were revealed to just be Vader fanboys.

Being a remake of Episode 4 aside, we've seen all of this stuff before. I'm not even sure how the series can go forward without retreading the EU.
>>
>>78404316
How many regular people do you know that actually read the Thrawn trilogy?

Or anything other than the movies and maybe the cartoon?
>>
>>78403997
True, those silly, mindless proles probably wouldn't even be able to recite the history of the Republic and don't even live their lives in accordance with the Jedi code.
>>
>>78404343
Because 99% of people don't know/have read any of those things. Certainly not the kids

I felt like everything was set up in the movie with planing and pay off
1. As a scavenger she knew the insides of ships including star destroyers
2. Maz konada's eyes closing feel the force speech. Personally, I feel this is the true nature of the force, less than what we were shown in the prequels
3. We see her kick some ass on jakku with the stick, and she spends most of ren's fight running away
>>
>>78404274
/swg/ made me gay, and I love it.
>>
>>78404348
Everyone when it came out. The Thrawn Trilogy was fucking huge back in the 90s. Also the EU was fucking huuuuge in the 2000's. Almost everyone was consuming some comic/game/book/etc from it during the prequel era.

Do you guys seriously not remember this? Did you just get into Star Wars last year or something? There's a reason why Star Wars is considered one of the biggest multimedia franchises of all time.
>>
>>78404363
I know. And I'm excited to see where the story goes. I'm invested in Rey's, Finn's, and even Kylo's stories.

I just have yet to see anything new.

The new film just felt like an adaption in the sense of Marvel, a story made from an accumulation of decades worth of stories.
>>
>>78404383
Rey was a Mary Sue, but just nowhere near as bad as Anakin, which is why I think people give her a pass.

Hopefully she'll become a more developed character in the next films without having to rely on a cartoon/comics like we did with Anakin.
>>
>>78403520

>>

I know all that. And all of that is from the hardcore fanbase but I really doubt everybody who went to see TFA, hell, I doubt everybody who made up RotS' box office had read it.

>>
>>78404468
I could argue for AotC Anakin, but he wasn't really a Mary Sue more than a shitty character. At least Rey is enjoyable. Prequel Anakin was just a school shooter.

Still, the only legitimately good TFA characters were Han and Finn. We didn't get much of Poe.
>>
>>78399467
I still think Kylo will end up being the "Prince Zuko" of the trilogy.
>>
>>78404449
Your implication that the franchise has solely relied on the hardcore fans for its longevity when that couldn't be farther from the truth.

Just because we didn't get a lot of him doesn't make him a bad character. Every scene he was in was gold. Also Chewie was great too.

And I really liked Kylo. I know people have beef with him but of all the characters' future development I want to see, his I'm the most interested in
>>
>>78399497
He's a better Anakin basically. He also has the advantage of not being directed by Lucas, which Hayden Christensen didn't have
>>
>>78404507
Except the only reason Lucas even went back to Star Wars was because the popularity of the comics and novels convinced him people were still interested in Star Wars.

The only reason we're even talking about this on /co/ is because of things like Tales of the Jedi and Dark Empire. You think anyone gives a shit about Droids or those shitty Marvel runs from the 80s?

I think that when they were doing the OT, the idea of Jedi being as prominent and present in Republic politics wasn't a thing.

Finn=Leia
Poe=Han

>Dec 1998
>Star Wars #1 - 49,322

http://www.comichron.com/monthlycomicssales/1999/1999-05.html
>May 1999 (The month of the movie's release)
>Star Wars TPM #1 - 88,437
>Other TPM Tie-ins around 70k
>Main Star Wars - 35,239

http://www.comichron.com/monthlycomicssales/2015/2015-11.html
>2015 in November 2015 (A month before release)
>Vader Down #1 - 384,969
>Star Wars #12 - 123,133
>Darth Vader #12 - 90,077
>Chewbacca #4 - 58,051
>Kanan #8 - 42,824

Let's assume every issue sold translates to a reader (though we all know it doesn't). The main Star Wars comic is currently over three times as popular than it was at the release of TPM. It's even more popular than the highest selling of their big hype releases that month. In fact, there were THREE Star Wars comics that sold higher than all four issues of TPM, and ALL FIVE solid significantly higher than the main Star Wars title (also, four of those double shipped). You can ignore the Vader Down numbers (like I intentionally ignored the Star Wars #1 launch numbers), and that all still stands.

So assuming that one one sale = one reader (it doesn't) and the average movie ticket is $10 (guessing here), let's look at readership vs viewership.

>Star Wars VII Domestic Opening Weekend: $248 million
>Divided by ten: 24.8 million viewers
>Star Wars #12 readers: 123,133

So approximately (and I admit this is rough math) 201 times as many people saw Star Wars VII on opening weekend in the US than read the comic book. That means .5% of the movie goers had read even the most popular Star Wars comic.

And this is while the Star Wars comic is at it's most popular in the past 30 years.

Simply put, there has never been a time when the majority of fans have been reading EU material.

Anakin built his own podracer, used it toake first place when he had never even finished a race (and no othrr human could do it), built C3p0, and piloted a Naboo fighter all when he was 8 years old.

Rey had piloted plenty of ships, was familiar with hand to hand combat, and already knew about Luke and the Jedi and the force before she got her powers.

>comparing one comic to another at a time when comics are huge
>cherrypicking a single comic when I said the EU in general
>comparing a comic to a Star Wars movie when most people see Star Wars movies multiple times
>saying that 1 issue sale doesn't equal one reader (so are people just buying multiples of the same issue?)
That is wonky as fuck. Also you have to take into account that many of the EU was divided among people who liked different things (comics/games/books/bounty hunters/jedi/sith/etc) so one single thing from the EU isn't going to be consumed by everyone (normally, however some things did like the Thrawn Trilogy, Kotor, etc).

It's something that has so many variables and different topics that it's impossible to compare. You had to have lived in the era and seen culture as the EU was coming out to know how big it was.

I would if there's a reliable place to get them. Instead I went with what we have data for.

But you're still delusional if you think even the Thrawn Trilogy was read by the majority of Star Wars movie goers.

According to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thrawn_trilogy#Reception.2C_sales_and_influence), the Thrawn Trilogy has sold A COMBINED TOTAL of 15 million copies. That's 5 million per book (it's actually probably a lot less, because book 1 would be front loaded, but let's be nice and generous here).

Now, that's no small feat, of course. They were very popular books within the sci-fi readers world and certainly among hardcore Star Wars fans.

But even if you assume that 5 million people read all three of the Thrawn Trilogy, you're looking at ONE FIFTH of the Episode VII domestic viewers in the opening weekend alone. That's a MUCH higher number than the comics, obviously, and it's a sizable chunk of viewers. But it's still a minority.

>>78404919
First off, I didn't cherrypick a single comic, I mentioned the top Star Wars comics for 1998 (there were a few others, but they were all performing about as well as the main title, if that).

Secondly, one issue DOESN'T equal one reader. That's common knowledge. One issue equals one book sold to a comic shop. Comic shops don't sell all their stock. And yes, some people buy multiple copies.

Third, I explained above why I didn't include the novels. Now I've included the Thrawn Trilogy. I can't seem to find sales data on KOTOR beyond one million Xbox copies sold. And to be honest, I'm not keen on looking around for more data when I've already done plenty.

Fourth, yes, I know that people see a movie multiple times. But as I explained, one sale doesn't equal one reader. Unfortunately, those numbers are literally impossible to know. Even if you assume that everyone who saw it opening weekend saw it twice (which is a GROSS overestimate), that's still 12.4 million viewers in one weekend.
>>
>>78399709
Hayden's one handsome fella that's for sure, but all that's nothing without charm yeah.
>>

I think you mean continued interest in the franchise, of which the novels and comics have always been a small part. Game or toy sales alone would prompt a return to the movie franchise.
>>
>>78404919
>>78405056
Ran out of room:

>You had to be there
I was there, and I'm not denying that it was popular. But you're trying to back up your opinion with anecdotal evidence. "I was there, it was huge, everyone was doing it!" doesn't mean anything. You're seriously delusional if you think that a MAJORITY of Star Wars viewers were into EU content.

Just for the sake of anecdotal evidence (which, again, means nothing) the biggest game I remember was Podracer, which according to wikipedia sold 3.12 million copies. Once again, no small feat. But a drop in the bucket compared to total viewers. And I remember that game being in everyone's N64 collection.
>>
>>78405053
>She'll never show up in the main ones

It's not a problem with her as in her place in the universe. The problem is that she has as much character baggage as any of the other older characters who appeared in TFA but all without having been in any of the actual movies. The reason I went with Thrawn is because they are the most popular as far as I'm aware. I'm not going to spend my day going through and finding sales numbers for every Star Wars book that came out. For one, I don't have time for that. But possibly more importantly to the discussion, consider this: What are the odds that someone who is reading EU novels didn't already read the Thrawn trilogy? A large portion of their sales would overlap (just like I realize that most of the 90k "people" who bought Darth Vader #12 also bought Star Wars #12, meaning they don't add up for a total of 213,000 readers).

>most of their parents did
More claims without facts.

If you want to provide some numbers that aren't just claims tied to how you feel about it, I would be genuinely interested to see it. But I currently don't see any evidence of a Star Wars book that sold more than ~5 million copies.

All Star Wars main protagonists are Sues. Anakin more than Rey, and Rey more than Luke, but all three of them are.
That doesn't make them bad.
I'd rather Rey got more development, but that's unrelated to her Sueishness or not. Plus I think that she might've actually been a decent character overshadowed by how great Finn and Poe were.

Luke and Anakin were not better than other more experienced characters in their first movies. Luke wasn't blown out of the sky during Yavin by pure luck, and he even had a Han save.

Anakin didn't really know what he was doing during Naboo. Pure luck as well.

In contrast, Rey going super saiyan was too much skill.

This. Hell, she did in one try what took Luke a helluvalot of concentration to do in the Wampa Cave, and the wampa wasn't trying to force-grab the saber from her.

Prior to that scene, we don't even see Rey doing any TK-force training. At least we see Luke getting hit by the remote droid a few times in the Falcon.
>>
>>78406003
There's no if about it.
She did.
Look at how weak Luke was in Empire.
He could barely wiggle his lightsaber when he was stuck in that wampa cave.

But Rey was not only able to pull it towards her, but overpower Kylo, who was trained by Luke himself and had years of experience.

Her experience with the Force was literally just a few hours old

>>
>>78406089
>He could barely wiggle his lightsaber when he was stuck in that wampa cave.
>But Rey was not only able to pull it towards her
That one was clearly because the lightsaber was pulling some kind of Force Excalibur shit and was choosing her instead of Kylo. Especially so considering she hadn't had her "believe in the Force" moment yet, that came after
>>
>>78406027
Because while cool, it wouldn't really fit into that universe.
>>
>>78406064
If that were the case Poe would end up with Rey.
Finn doesn't really have a parallel in the OT.

He does have a parallel in the PT, though. Jar Jar. The difference is that while Jar Jar didn't work, Finn does. Both occupy niche of ignorant audience avatar for knowledgeable characters to explain themselves to.
>>
>>78406094
Seeing as the Clone Wars hadn't started by that point, and that the separatists weren't going military that much yet - while the First Order was doing shit to planets left-and-right, you're right.

Ren probably had way more combat experience.

Luke had little actual combat training and moisture farmed for the first part of his life. Luke had very little actual format training in anything.

>Ren probably had way more combat experience.
First of all Dooku was a former Jedi and a complete master of the Force and an appointed named Sith, clearly having completed his training twice over and having complete peace of mind.

Ren, who after having just taken a bowcaster shot to the gut, is literally stated to have incomplete training and on that note, wasn't even trying to kill her. Add that to the fact that he is obviously a fully confused and emotionally messed up guy and that he just killed his own father.

It's a completely different comparison

I think Luke wearing black/choking the pigs was supposed to shock the audience into thinking he may have turned to the dark side.

In the context of never seeing it before, following ESB, it could have been possible. People forget that Vader contacts Luke again, after Luke tries to an hero, and that exchange is a lot calmer.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that they were trying to tease an evil Luke at the start of RotJ.
>>
>>78406282

I feel she was doomed from the start. Either she's a Sue for having all these abilities with little training, or she's a Sue because the writers made her take a while to learn these abilities to hide the fact that she's a Sue.

At least that's what the arguments are starting to look like.
>>
>>78406507
Did the "dark side" even exist during ANH/ESB? I just realized, the concept may have formally entered the canon only during ROTJ.

I only remember stuff like "he will join us or die/join me and we will rule the galaxy" schtick. Not "turn to the dark side" or something like that.

What does Yoda say about the cave?

Obi Wan being on Tatooine carrying Anakin's saber isn't a coincidence though - he's there to watch over Luke.

The coincidence is that the droids that were there were the ones he used to hang around with.

However - Leia was on the ship with a message for Obi Wan - so the Tantive IV really probably was supposed to go to Tatooine.

"Mary Sue" is a trigger world on /co/. I think that may have to do with often how simple the writing is in comics. People are sensitive about a character they like being called something they don't like.
I guarantee you that if you put a whole bunch of characters in a hat, pulled one, and made a thread calling it a "Mary Sue", you'd reach post limit, regardless of how accurate that statement is or not.

However, trigger word aside, some characters do have the flaw of being "too perfect". Rey, I think, is one of them.

I don't think anyone can argue that she is as well rounded as Finn.

>>
>>78406628
You know they can't just remake ANH forever, right? Hell, take next years Rogue One for example. We know they can't blow up the Death Star in that one, right? So they're going to have to give us a new kind of climactic battle. No exploding space station, and no Sith Lord fight.

And Rebels has been telling some pretty original stories too, what with Filoni teasing Vader and Ahsoka's (possibly final) confrontation is happening this season.

So... Why would you drop Star Wars over one unoriginal movie?

I think it's because JJ didn't remember the flesh on the hand. He just remembers he got it cut off so now he thinks he should have a more sci-fi looking hand.

This is worse than Toriyama forgetting Launch exists. JJ fucking sucks.

Yes by a regretful Obi-Wan. I hate how people cling to this. Obi-Wan was lying out his ass the entire time to look about the past. I feel like people do not understand the OT and the PT

I thought his character was useless. They're basically brainwashed and trained all their lives and I can't imagine they have much of a social life, if he wants to escape from that it makes sense. But he's completely normal when we meet him. Same thing with Phasma. She looks great but then she just gave up and did nothing in the entire movie.

Are synthetic lightsaber crystals canon?

Natural Kyber crystals don't have color.

They get their color when their chosen Jedi/Force user awakens the force within them.

After a Jedi has been guided to a crystal chosen by the Force, it gets a color. Blue and Green are the most common, though Purple, Yellow, Black, and White are all possible too, while rarer.

Red crystals are possible too, but there is only one known example. Kylo Ren's cracked crystal.

Red is normally a synthetic crystal, used by the Sith.

Vader's saber blew up with the Death Star. It fell down the reactor shaft like Palpatine.

But actually, I guess synthetic crystals aren't canon. Maul, Sidious, Vader, etc all had kyber crystals.

Go figure.
