Getting to the final 24 hours or so:
For those of you who weren't here the last couple of years, I did various Christmas contests and would gift someone who I arbitrarily chose as the winner. I intend to keep that tradition alive this year.

I decided to get started with a (relatively) big challenge: Write a Christmas story featuring /co/ characters. Maybe Lex Luthor decides he hates Santa because he challenges human superiority. Maybe the Flash has to sub in for Santa one night and deliver presents around the world (has that been done? That must have been done before). It doesn't have to be long, just something short and simple, but the more Christmas special-y the better. If you're a drawfag and want to draw it out instead, that's fine too.

Send your submissions to [email protected]. Or you can post them in the thread, but just make sure I see them. I'll give everyone until Sunday afternoon (Eastern time) to put something together. At the end I'll share them with the thread and crown a winner. Make sure to include your wishlist with your submission.

Alright, new Christmas thread! Here's my code if you wanna Christmas gift me something or whatever: 297MIGOM4JLT0

So, /co/, what are some unique Christmas traditions you guys celebrate? I love hearing about how other people celebrate Christmas.
>>
>>77949770

Nothing too unique. My family is pretty religious so Christmas Eve service is always on the books. My parents always let us open one present on Christmas Eve after coming back from church too.

Yeah, i'm suprised you remember.

>Because I'm really sorry they were so shitty to you

Don't worry about it, i expect it from there at this point. The last time i went in i was looking at the floppies and the girl at the till by the door stared at me the entire time i was in the shop. Is it really that strange to see a black guy interested in comics?
>>
Man, I'm happy I finally woke up for the first day in a week and feel vaguely alive.

Celebrated by nabbing myself a few comics on sale.

I remember reading the Street Fighter comics years ago and enjoying them.

Enjoy it. I had to select a used copy, but it said the condition was really good, so hope it doesn't arrive looking like crap. Merry Christmas, anon.

You also want recent Jeff Parker JLU, which had the most unlikely Stargirl teamup in it that I never knew I wanted BUT I DID
>>
>>77949770
My family would always watch Santa Claus Is Coming to Town on christmas eve morning, and The Year without a santa claus at night before bed. It started when we were really young, and it was easy to convince us to go to sleep after watching year without a santa claus.

Love those miser brothers

Oh my god I know. That whole story arc just made the fact that it got cancelled hurt so much more worse.

I just want another DCUP/Brave and the Bold series that actually lasts, but nothing fucking sells for DC without Batman front and center anymore.

Just found out about these through German Amazon, these minikits come with small paperback comics or in some cases just stickers so they still fall under the book category and qualify for their free shipping.

Checked Amazon.com and the majority of these don't cost more than $9. Thought they were neat and maybe worth sharing with you guys, they make for sweet little stocking stuffers and wishlist additions.
>>
>>77950476
Who was the teamup?

Stargirl and Enemy Ace

>>77950661

That whole arc was pretty fucking rad and featured about a dozen other minor DC characters thrown in. It sounds like it should be a clusterfuck but I love stories like that because it gives these characters a chance to play off of each other in interesting ways.
>>
>>77950701
I'm hoping they collect that run in a trade, and don't just forget it exists. I can't find all the back issues.
>>
>>77950636
hnnnng

>>77950701
It'll make a great single trade, Parker JLU, and I still hope for some kind of relaunch
>>
>>77950740
A relaunch would be perfect.
Running it off from Lemire's JLU was a bad move

Pretty solid fun. If he's a fan of the games, he'll probably enjoy the comics.

There's also a big crossover (technically there are two crossovers, but I haven't heard many good things about the second) with the Sonic comics if he's a Sonic fan too.

>>77950661
Enemy Ace IS awesome. His internal conflict of being an undefeated killing machine but finding no enjoyment in fulfilling his patriotic duty in the war is great, and the old school melodrama narration amps it up marvelously. The showcase presents volume collecting his appearances is great, even if you don't like war stories.

... Shit. I am so sorry you had to deal with that shit. The worst I ever had to put up with that place was having one of the store owners telling me not to read comics in the store and to be fair I was just straight up reading trades cover to cover and putting them back on the shelf.

Was it the girl with the bright blue hair? Because she was nice as pie to me when I went in there today. Then again, I'm a schlubby white guy.

Have you heard of Geek Syndicate? Those guys are pretty fun to listen to.

Calvin and Hobbes is really great. I always want the complete collection, but I hear the binding isn't good for repeated readings. Bad binding is something that always gets my goat. What's the point of a collection like that if you can't flip through it regularly?
>>
>>77954654

I got a whole bunch of book collections of Calvin and Hobbes when I was a kid and passed them on to my cousins after I've read through them so much that the glue in the spine was starting to crack and fall off.
>>
>>77954654
I've been slowly getting the smaller corrections because every so often they show up in thrift shops and salvation armys. Never fail to buy one when I find one.
>>
>>77954489
In all fairness, if I recieved presents when I was a kid that literally had my name on them and weren't obviously the kind of thing you buy in a catalogue, I'd be silently horrified as well.

Ho shit, yeah they made them thick back then. That's impressive.

I once picked up a 20+ piece set of lab-grade glassware from Salvation Army, beakers and flasks and shit for about 25 dollars all together. Have no idea how it got there but they're mine now so I can do amateur chemistry stuff in my backyard without worrying about messing up my pyrex dishes.

I'm still convinced it has to do with the final day of the 12 days of Christmas (5 o'clock, 5 golden rings, there's 12 of them, i unno), there's even some versions that end with 12 ringing bells.

It's actually not the thickness that's the real gem with it, it's that the surface of the pan is almost as smooth as glass, and all the modern stuff is grainy in comparison. It's one gorgeous pan, especially properly seasoned, and if you take care of cast iron it'll last and last.

Whew, now that the STORYTIME OF PAIN is done for the night I can come bitch to you guys about this afternoon! So I'm digging out a spot to plant something, trying to clear out some heavy clay soil, but it's still kind of wet. Leave the tools out, fuck around elsewhere, then it's almost dark and I think "oh should get the tools." Go to the backyard to find my large hole is full of water, wtf. Neighbor behind me? Left a garden hose running when not home, and now the backyard is a swamp in that corner.

I hope he gets a nasty water bill surprise for Christmas.

This is a spectacularly difficult puzzle. I mentioned a few days ago that I was working hard on it.

All crypto's require a handful of assumptions to be solved. Yet, I add several codes to increase the number of assumptions to fully solve these (but I assume everyone will just google the answer once they have some key words).

This puzzle in particular, though, is designed to lure people into some bad assumptions (because I'm a dick).
Some people have already made SOME of the correct assumptions...they just need to make one or two more

The one nice thing about being sick, I've been able to catch up on reading comics.

For some reason Waid's Daredevil really captured me. Daredevil was a character who has just had to many super dark stories in a row. I really enjoyed that the show was able to remember both sides of the character.

How's it going, everybody? I'm thankfully over both kids and the missus being sick, and even seem to have dodged the bug entirely myself.

We finally got to do the first in what we hope will be a month-long series of holiday activities with the kids tonight. We watched A Muppet Christmas Carol while making snowmen with various sizes of marshmallows and toothpicks. It was amusing to see our daughter having to stop and take a bite out of every one she attached to the toothpicks before continuing to build, while guarding her stack from the baby who was snatching them to eat any time she looked away. My own valiantly destroyed the missus' snowman in a violent toothpick fencing bout, but was lost to us when she speared him in the head with the sword of her fallen champion.

this reminds me of a strange rant I went on last night where I theorised Santa was a time traveller from about 5000 years in the future who made a toy factory in the triassic period and then went out and used time travel to deliver all the presents in one night, wearing the full santa garb. It takes him about six years to visit every kid in the world, but he's happy to do it, because unless he does do it, the christmas cycle will never start and thus he will have no need to go back and start christmas.

being a man of finite lifespan, Santa always passes the time machine to one kid at the end of his fifth or fourth christmas run and trains the kid up to become santa. That kid then goes on to become santa for about five runs, and so on and so forth, until santa number 16K hands the original time traveller a time machine as a gift.

because time travel.

I see you have the Thor soundtrack. May I reccommend the Chicken Run or Brave soundtrack to you as well? The chicken Run soundtrack is what I use when I'm washing up or taking a long walk because as well as being a blast to listen to, each track is so tightly linked with the film that you can practically see the entire movie in your head, beat-for-beat. and that's one helluva thing.
>>
>>77974127

Also, did you get a gift earlier?

reposting my list:

1CKYUN103CTGE (.co.uk)

It was on the unlisted list but wasn't listed as a .co.uk

I'm okay with anything on there, but Soppy would be particularly appreciated, my girlfriend would get a kick out of that. otherwise, any of the blu-rays or CDs would be really well received.

I never really liked that one rockabilly track (only good rockabilly track is Crazy Little Thing Called Love, imo) but I could always give it another go.

Never saw the movie.

you can just skip that one track, it's the rest of the album with all the big brass sections and swagger that gets me. the Brave soundtrack is full of violin motifs and woodwind vibes, there's a song in there as well and if you're at all into folk, it's all kinds of tasty.

and finally, you've not been gifted this year, then?

There's always the possibility that one asshole will vote for themselves over and over again, whether it's via strawpoll or samefagging in a thread.

I think you should post them for the sake of sharing them and seeing what people have to say, and then make the final decision yourself.

I'd say make the easy calls yourself - if one is measurably bad or good, then it's easy to pick, but if you come down to like a top 3 or something, I'd say maybe some kind of vote or chance thing might be right.

Yeah everyone bitches about how broken our school system is here in America, but really it's just the crushing vice of logistics. Other countries don't have to deal with the huge diversity of cultures, socioeconomic backgrounds and whatnot that we have, and just plain don't have as big of a population to deal with. I have 150 students out of a school of 1000 students in one of the fastest-growing counties in the united states. Pretty much all the solutions for it boil down to "WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TEACHERS TO GO AROUND", and no one wants to be a teacher because of the problems that creates in the first place.

I wish I could tutor every single one of these kids one-on-one instead of dealing with them in a class of 25-28 all together.

Ugh, that's enough bitching from me I guess. I'm going to clean the apartment and then actually sit down and try to get shit done. Sorry for turning the thread into my blog.
>>
>>77978108
word. just do what you gotta do, hand out bullshit grades, whatever. get the fuck out as soon as possible. 100% of people i've known who dreamt their whole life of becoming teachers were too arrogant to teach in a private school and went the public route. every single one of them burned out in less than 2 years.

who the fuck wants to waste their time trying to teach a bunch of kids who aren't there to learn. go back to grad school. get in debt to do it if you have to. just don't get stuck in that pit
>>
>>77978146
>were too arrogant to teach in a private school and went the public route

See I was the opposite, I WANT to teach in a private school. The problem is that most Catholic or charter schools pay less than the public school system and I didn't want to do that straight off before I had any savings built up. I figured I'd teach public for a few years, get some dosh in the bank and some experience and credentials, then look around for a private school job I'm a science teacher, I can go damn near anywhere and at least get an interview. That plan hasn't really changed much.

ya private schools would be a totally different experience and reward for your time invested over a public school

someone could throw 6 figures a year at me and i'd never teach in a public school. basically a day care
