Why is it that despite Shinji being so iconic and popular, he hasn't gotten a single decent figure or the obsessive attention that the waifus or Kaworu gets in Japan?

It's not a recent change from the Rebuilds, it's been like this since 1996.
Even most MCs from popular shows, especially mecha, get their fair share of merch and fangirls. But not Shinji, he never did since the 90s.
He's only starting to get good figures and stuff now because of 3.0, but that's usually only if he's an accessory to Kaworu.

We all know Shinji is popular. But why doesn't he have the type of popularity that Asuka/Rei/Kaworu do?

Because despite Shinji objectively being the best written character in Eva, and one of the best in Anime in general, just that isn't enough to lure people to spend money on him in merch and figures.

In the 90s character figs were rare as it is, plus he's had the whole plain jane thing going on so companies assumed he probably wasn't profitable.
It's only been getting bit better in the past few years. Most likely due to a new generation being introduced to Eva through Rebuild.

Yes, you're right, unfortunately. Shinji doesn't appeal to the general audience as much as the girls to waifufags and Kaworu to girl fans.

He had a couple of old cute "figs" (like pic) but they are of awful quality (by today's standards) and are hard to find so I guess it's as good as nothing.

As a buyfag I sure hope the situation will change in the near future. Even getting one or 2 figs would be nice.
That's probably never going to happen, but we can dream, right?

PS Also I'm so tired of these plugsuits. I don't think they look good in figs. Some casual wear or traditional or anything else at all would be so much better.

Good Shinji figs are a myth. I only would consider the one in production that will never release >>3100388 and his prize fig with Kaworu from 3.0 (it's still just a prize though). Got some hopes for >>3100313 but we'll see.

I'd think the figure situation for the other male characters is even worse.
Gendo and Kaji have like one decent fig each and Toji/Kensuke have probably 5 figs in existence. I'm guessing Aoba/Hyuga have nada.

Kaworu is the only one who gets off easy, but he still trails significantly behind the girls.

You're not making me feel bad, I'm just surprised about the standards. I wouldn't say the figure is a masterpiece, but it's serviceable. It's "decent". That's what I would think. "Decent" is in between "very good" and "crap".
Figures aren't what I usually buyfag, only sometimes, so my middle ground is different from yours, I suppose.

It's more of a murky blue than outright brown, although I was surprised the blue wasn't more vivid. I'm not angry about it, just slightly dampened; but it's also not enough to make the figure crap for me. I had mentioned this figure in the first place because I was seeing that almost every Shinji figure was outright bad, and I don't consider this figure bad even with the murky, desaturated blue. It looks nice on my dresser with my books and other belongings.
Like I said, I don't go in hard for figures. If we have different standards, I get that, it just surprised me. I thought I was seeing a total lack of grey area in between crappy figures and really good ones.

Noting now, the eyes look awfully brown in the picture I took. When I got the figure myself, I had to squint and try to tell whether I was looking at faded blue or mild brown. It's either my camera picking up the brown, or I have shitty eyes. So we'll call them brown for the sake of this thread, but regardless, my feelings don't change.

Yes, I was surprised to see things back to life, but now it's petering out again. Not even news of Khara hiring animators for Eva did anything.
But it's to be expected. There's not much happening lately, and a lot of artists are idling away too.

Is anyone planning on checking out the Pikopiko manga once it's released in English? Not that Dark Horse has an excellent track record with Eva translations, but still.

I read the first two volumes of Pikopiko, it's fairly decent for an Eva spinoff.
I'll be interested to see how Dark Horse translates all the Japanese puns in it. They usually just make up their own shit under the guise of localization.

And yeah, Dark Horse's localization is pretty special. Detective Diary was particularly egregious in some places.

I bought the first volume out of curiousity when it came out, I remember making a post about it here, but that must have been at least 1-2 years ago.
Then I read the second a little later in a Manga cafe.

I wouldn't go out of my way to get it, it's really nothing special but it's definitely one of the better Eva spinoffs. Kaworu is pretty moe in it. Though I don't see it running for much longer, gag manga get old fast.

I can definitely take pictures. It's a gag manga, so it may be hard to tell what is already a joke and what is the translator fucking around, but I'll especially keep an eye out for anything as wild as Detective Diary's "Kaworu is Pen-Pen's assistant".
