My parents brought back this bag of Saffron from Bali - can I use this as normal Saffron in rice? It looks a bit different so I don't know what to do with it
There's lots of fake saffron around. Except that stuff doesn't even look like saffron.
That looks like wood chips or something.
And that much saffron would cost a fortune no matter where it was grown.

This. That's not even saffron.
That much genuine saffron would be worth thousands of dollars.

Looks like your parents got swindled, looks exactly like the cheap trash shit they sell to retarded tourists in every third world shithole market.
It's safflower.

My parents had brought this shit from India, it looks very similar. Not the same kind of saffron as we know in the West, but it's close.
There is a very distinct saffrony taste, but not as strong as the usual stuff , so don't hesitate to be heavy handed.
I used it to make boat loads of saffron rice, and white fish in creamy saffron leek sauce. However after one week, all the frangranve and taste were gone, couldn't experiment more.

i dont think its a cheat as much as its a mistranslation
in spanish/latin cooking safflower is used to colour( a cheaper replacment for expensive saffron) but in spanish both sound similar and the translations are often flipped
saffron doesn't grow in indonesia, jesus christ op. have your parents committed because they obviously can't look after themselves at their advanced age any longer
safflower is basically cheap ass, watered down saffron. use it in saffron rice - it's decent enough, but nowhere near as good
