Tea thread, post about tea or something, I'm too lazy to find the OP copypasta so here's some new information.

Green tea isn't going to help you lose weight
Green tea isn't going to keep you up if you drink it before bed
Stop using teabags
Don't buy tea from Teavana
If you are using teabags, stop leaving it in the cup after it's done brewing
Stop using boiling water

Darker oxidized oolong makes me want to live.

The first oolong I tried was magical. I think it was called wuyi or something. I havent seen it in stock from the online store I got it from...

When do I need to check for it? When does this stuff get harvested and make it to the shelves? I've had a lot of good tea since then but I want to go back and experience that flavor one more time.

does anyone know shit about GABA tea? I did some research and it seems that GABA is literally the same technical compound that is also found in liquid ecstasy.

theres a lot of bs around it, from the chinalife store:

GABA stands for gamma-amino butyric acid, an amino acid that is one of the main neurotransmitters in your central nervous system. Neurotransmitters help nerve signals to travel between cells (neurons). The GABA chemical functions to prevent over-excitement of the nervous system by controlling the movement of signals between neurons.

GABA tea has an abundant amount of health benefits. Some would even describe GABA as a ‘super tea’.

ANTI-ANXIETY, DE-STRESS: GABA is a chemical that your body produces to keep the brain calm, control blood pressure and manage stress. High levels of GABA prevent an over-active nervous system by blocking excessive levels of nerve signal transmissions that cause anxiety-related health issues. Not enough GABA in your brain can lead to epilepsy, seizures, convulsions, Huntington’s disease and Parkinsonism.

ANTI-INSOMNIA: GABA's calming effect can aid a deeper sleep and help combat sleep disorders. Drink an hour before bedtime.

ANTI-CANCER: GABA tea can inhibit the growth of cancer cells. In particular GABA has been studied for its ability to reduce airway-derived lung cancer.

LOWERS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: GABA is your body's own tranquilliser and is known for its role in lowering blood pressure. Please avoid if you suffer from hypotension.

PREVENTS DIABETES: GABA lowers blood sugar in your body by encouraging the production of insulin and secretion of insulin from the pancreas, preventing the risk of diabetes.

STRONG MENTAL HEALTH: GABA aids in memory retention, improves overall mental alertness and aids the development of learning abilities.

It's like how the cheap Twinings earl grey in the orange packets doesn't specifically say 'bergamot oil' it just has 'citrus oil' and it tastes like dirt

I've been into chinese tea for a while now and the more I drink it the more I realize it is very resilient, even whites and greens take boiling water just fine, you just have to tweak the other parameters.
I find the people who care about temp more are people drinking finicky low quality tea, or people who are into jap and indian tea that require in fact stricter temperature control due to characteristics of the processing/ of the tea itself

Coffee will always be my one and only but unfortunately I've developed a panic disorder in regards to high amounts of caffeine, weed, alcohol etc. Caffeine the the best of the 3 for me but anything more than a 3rd of a proper black cup can set my heart burning on certain days.

Its not that its better or worse, it's just super varied so it has more grounds to be a hobby, there are a ton of variables to study, from what mountain it was picked to stuff like storage, all of that affects the flavour a lot.
Most other teas are all about getting fresh and quality material and that is it, drink it while it's good and wait for the next harvest

Doesn't matter, your own mugs are fine.

>teapot
Only matters in as much as there's room inside of it for the leaves to swell up without compressing against anything.
Hell, you could steep the leaves in your mug if you wanted, but you'd have to filter the brew through your teeth as you sipped.

Personally I use a $3 ceramic pot I got from the dollar store.
The little grill inside of the spout is kind of sub-par, so I pour through a mesh strainer I had lying around as well.

>>8798170
Yes, but two caveats:
- You can't use it for coffee, lingering coffee oils will ruin your tea
- Don't actually press down on the leaves like you do for coffee, that'll squeeze tannins out and ruin your tea

I've even heard it's the best possible thing to make tea in, since you can pump the plunger and stir the leaves up thoroughly for a fuller extraction
>>
>>8798182
>coffee oils ruin your tea
I use a coffee maker for both. There is very minimal contact with coffee oils, only in the bottom of the basket, and if you keep it clean there's nothing to worry about.
I taste no difference. I'm a man and I do what I want in my own home involving caffeine.
Your coffee making techniques make me wonder why you don't use your time cooking, cleaning, gardening and laying around instead.
You can't possibly have so much time on your hands and so little to do that you would want to spend 16 minutes making a cup of coffee.

Who takes care of your normal person shit like cooking and cleaning while you spend hours in the kitchen attempting to improve bitter caffeine water?
Have some self respect and get a coffee maker my friend.

Too much fiddling. If I want to sit around smoking cigarettes, sweating at the pits and twitching, I'm not putting effort into it.
It's practically less effective than using a coffeemaker, which can be loaded and switched on in 30 seconds.
That's ignoring the fact that 8oz coffee takes only another 30-40 seconds to show up in the bottom of the pot.

Maybe I just have a really fast coffee maker.
I refuse to join your cult. You stay in your corner and I'll head off to mine.

I'd grant you that if we were talking pour-over, but press is literally just pour water in and let it sit for four minutes.

If time is that valuable to you and you don't give a single shit about flavor, then you might as well drink instant.

You can re-steep the tea later, but keeping warm water in the pot will extract more and more tannins over time

If you want to keep a warm pot at the ready, use two pots. Pour the tea out into the second pot and keep that one warm.

Im not super well versed in aged pu, its from 09, got it at pu-erh.sk, it has kind of a milky taste, similar to some older drystored stuff I sampled recently, the yixing I use most of the time smoothens it a lot, its the first time I tried it in a gaiwan and some bitterness I haven't noticed is there.
Overall it's a nice daily drinker with noticeable aged taste at ~13cents a gram

GABA is a neurotransmitter which is comprised of amino acids which in turn makes it a type of protein so unless it comes in some kind of enteric coating to protect it from stomach acid and gastric enzymes, said protein will get denatured and digested long before it has a chance to do whatever magic the box is claiming.

GABA tea is tasty, and maybe slightly more relaxing than other teas, but that effect is quite minor.
>t seems that GABA is literally the same technical compound that is also found in liquid ecstasy.
Nope. "Liquid ecstasy" probably refers to GHB, which affects the body's GABA system (as do most tranquilizers, alcohol, basically any non-opiod sedative) but is distinct from GABA itself.
GABA is somewhat healthy, but consuming it as is won't accomplish much. Just buy tea because you like the taste, it's basically guaranteed to be doing you more good than harm. If you want minor GABAergic sedatives (>>8787406) with low addiction potential, maybe look into picamilon or phenibut. Longecity is a good site for that sort of thing, as is examine.com. [Anon is not a doctor]

Check out what-cha, they have an affordable, well-curated selection. You can look up individual teas on Steepster to get a better sense of what you might want to order.
If you just want to sample some of the loose leaf teas out there, I recommend getting a Da Hong Pao or other Wuyi oolong, a silver needle, maybe a strong Yunnan black or something, and a small pu-erh cake if you're feeling adventurous (ripe pu is generally cheaper and more accessible than raw, especially if you like coffee).

Historical reasons, it was brought on horsebacks, it was easier to carry that way, nowadays its just better for storage, it's also said to age better that way, keeps humidity.
It's also kind of a meme, many producers press some teas into cakes to meme people into thinking it will get better with age or so they can sell it as some kind of specialty item

I'm a beginner, have some questions:

>Did Britbongs invent the notion of using tea as a vessel for milk and sugar?
>Why the fuck are there so many fruity teas that taste like you're drinking watered down kool-aid, and how did they become a thing?
>Which is the better method: using more leaves and re-steeping, or using fewer leaves and throwing them away?
>Why are bag teas all such shit?
>Why do Britbongs ruin everything?
>>
>>8809336
>Why the fuck are there so many fruity teas that taste like you're drinking watered down kool-aid, and how did they become a thing?
Women.
>>
>>8809355
Makes sense. That leads to another question; why are so many teas targeted at women/why is it seen as feminine? At least in the states, the boxes are usually really girly looking unless it's generic Lipton dirtwater.

Why is tea looked at as feminine and coffee looked at as masculine?
>>
>>8809363

I don't think it's tea that's feminine and coffee that's masculine--rather, it's the particular version of each that's either masculine or feminine.

Products that are fruity or sweet tend to be favored by females, and thus many of those teas have feminine-appealing packaging. You see the exact same type of packaging for sweet coffee drinks that have a lot of milk and sugar added (pumpkin spice latte, anyone).
>>
>>8809363
>coffee looked at as masculine
It really isn't. Unless you're specifically referring to something like espresso.

Also when it comes to the teas that you're referring to, you'll find that they aren't often marketed on their taste alone, they are marketed on magical health benefits, and women are the ones who more often fall for that junk.
You'll find that something like smoked chink tea which is someone who genders things for whatever reason such as yourself might consider to be manly is marketed for its taste rather than curing cancer.

More or less. I'm going to blame the Portuguese though, they encouraged it.

>Which is the better method: using more leaves and re-steeping, or using fewer leaves and throwing them away?
Neither, the regular amount of leaves can be resteeped just fine.

>Why are bag teas all such shit?
They are filled with a grade of tea called "dust and fannings" i.e. the leftover dust swept up off the floor after processing real tea.

>Why do Britbongs ruin everything?
Toxic combination of stupidity and unwarranted pride.

Check your grocery store first
Twinings loose leaf should be widely available in Canada, it's much better than their garbage bags
King Cole and Morse's are domestic brands although they've been getting hard to find these past few years, if you see a box of Morse's Premium snag it up even if it's bags

Look also for ethnic grocers, they'll have tins of random imports like Alokozay or whatever

If you've got asians or hipsters (ideally both) there's probably an actual dedicated tea import shop downtown, keep an eye out for that

Bulk Barn also has bins of tea, quality is ehhh but it's acceptable.

I like the redneck sweet tea method:
Pour 1L boiling water over 5~10 teabags in a bowl, steep at least one hour (can be left overnight)
Remove teabags and add another 500mL of cold water, serve with lemon wedges for squeezing.

If you're a redneck you can also add like half a cup of sugar but that might be entirely too sweet for non-americans.
