Got back from China to an empty house I was borrowing for the week from a friend. Don't even remember what I was cooking, something with thin-sliced beef.

Problem is, the line where the beef ends and your hand begins starts to get real blurry after a quantity of rum. Sliced myself wide open, twice, blood everywhere. I'm calling the guy that owns the place frantically asking for med supplies, he has none, luckily I keep some in my travel bags.

Never cook alone while drunk. Hot things and sharp things are scary when uncoordinated.

I honestly feel great when I go to work several hours after binge drinking; that period of time when the neurotransmitters I depleted with alcohol come flooding back in makes me feel pretty good during the day. I can remember, barely, when I didn't drink, in my early teens. I'm much, much older, and it's just part of my life. I can't do anything without alcohol. Any activity, any socializing, must be accompanied by alcohol. And by all measures of 'murrican success, I'm there. A 2400 square foot house on 2 acres paid in full. No debt. When I've tried to quit, AA for example, there was something missing about me as an individual. Sometimes, a rather abhorent thing like alcohol, is part of what defines you. Four decades of drink is far too long for me to suddenly give up a fundamental part of myself.

That's just me though. If you're relatively young, try to cut it off if you can.

Sober almost 4 years now. Don't drink at all anymore, even my extended family (who all most definitely knew me being shitfaced drunk for a couple years) forgot about it and have offered me beers during holidays and I reject it.

I tend to consider both having a large spiritual epiphany coupled with absolute hatred of the 12-Step program that attributed to my sobriety. The rehabs drove me bonkers. I tend to think that if I drink again, I'll have to go back to one of those places, and fuuuuuuck that.

Also being around drug addicts for a rather large part of my life also highly influenced sobriety, oldest sister is rehabilitated, older sister still using afaik, and mother still abuses pills.

I don't come to these threads too often but they most definitely bring back the desperate and tortuous memories of drinking, further keeping me away from it. I used to do the same shit I've heard on here. For example at one point I had to keep my vodka bottle outside in a ditch and go "walk the dog" as a bullshit excuse to leave the house, take a few gulps, and go back in. Also walked about 3-4 miles in a blizzard to sell off old video games to buy vodka because I was a dead broke, unemployed college drop-out. Used to go to school shitfaced, too, luckily never got caught with that.

Life has been completely reversed in that aspect and I'm doing much better now.

First off you obviously need to want to get better. You have to accept and realize that alcohol really hasn't done anything good in your life and actually just makes everything worse. It's really about changing your mindset towards booze...on a more base level, it helps to stay occupied. It gets said a lot, but exercise is a huge help in this regard, it makes a big difference. Smoking weed has helped me immensely, but some people will just see that as trading one problem for another. I'm on my phone right now so I can't type a ton, but I'm happy to answer any questions...I'm on these threads frequently so you can always find me in another one. We're all in this together.

You know that's already been done. I saw a documentary on Netflix where they read excerpts from his journal. He thought it would only take 30 days or so, but it ended up being almost 60 days. But I suspect he probably lost track of time and it was only around 40. They showed the page of his last journal entry, and it was an almost illegible scribble trailing off into a squiggly line.

It's hard for me to maintain a regular schedule on ANYTHING, my job has me work a ten hour shift, which isn't bad, but the shifts are random. Monday could be 5a to 4p, Tuesday 11p to 7a, then followed by a 4p to 1a the same day, you know. It bums me out and I can't feel life functioning beyond watching movies and drinking and waiting to work again.

I hate myself so much. How do you set up a budget for yourself only to spend over half of it on alcohol. Had to fucking dip into my savings and add to my budget just to be able to afford to get luggage through the fucking airport soon.

It really takes changing your habits, your lifestyle, your viewpoints, that sort of thing. I felt it internally, there was a conflict (and still very much is), because I had been conditioned to think that alcohol was fun and exciting and that I could not enjoy most things without booze in me. So everything I did started to involve alcohol. It took me hitting rock bottom, more than once, to really want to change and actually start taking action toward that.

And that's a key, is stepping up and taking action toward change. Step one for me was going to a hospital and detoxing. After that, it was a slow process back to being "normal". I've had multiple slip-ups and mistakes where I indulged too much or went on binges, but after enough of those you start to realize how shitty alcohol is. I always knew it before, but my brain wouldn't let me fully believe and commit. For you, maybe you have not really hit rock bottom. Maybe you've had some bad hangovers and embarassing situations because of your drinking - negative effects - but I would implore you to start taking action now if you truly have not hit bottom. The alternative is that you will, and then you'll really start to learn lessons. The difference is that you actually recognize and WANT to change.

Life's fleeting pleasures are slowly disappearing altogether. I've been drinking fairly heavily weekly or fortnightly since I was 18, but nowadays when I get drunk I end up screaming and convulsing in anger or despair in my bed if I drink at home or just getting real depressed and drinking until I can't see anymore if I'm with friends
