Gundam/mecha costumes are always better ideas conceptually than they are in practice.

Contrary to what >>9283722 says you can totally do this for a first costume. Attached is a picture of my first costume. I had no prior experience with this kind of thing beyond making model kits when I made this.

It doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg either so long as your smart about materials. Foamcore board, Coroplast and cardboard are all cheap easy to find materials and you can often find plenty of the later without paying a dime.

Look into a program called Pepakura and the 405th forums or the RPF. You can find 3D models of various gundam suit and use 3D model in this program to make and size patterns to make your parts. If you want check out my youtube or FB @ uberscosplay. Ive got videos of panels I have done about mecha costume construction that can point you in the right direction.
