First cosplay I've ever made and first time ever working with fabric.
If I think of all the bad things it's been a nightmare, but I can't focus on the bad you know.
(Makoto Nanaya btw)
Also have attached the gold buttons yet
>>
>>9218321
Damn that helmet looks super nice, mind if I ask how you did it?
>>
>>9218352
Bike helmet + worbla, then I made a pattern out of cling wrap and duct tape for the fabric covering. All the hem work is just fake/decorative that I glued on to cover the seams where I glued on the fabric.
Bow is just hot glued on. I have the D I O letters ready but I'm not sure how I'm going to attach them to the facing yet.
>>
>>9218334
That's lookin' pretty damn clean for your first time working with fabrics. Good attitude about it~ (also Makoto is top tier BB Waifu)
Can't tell if you trimmed off the excess from your zippers in the pic on the right but don't forget that if you haven't

I've been looking for a challenge so I wanted to do something really out of the ordinary. Made a 3D model, converted it to pepakura, now I guess I fiberglass + resin + bondo, nervous as I've never done this before. I heard someone say cover it in worbla instead? never worked with worbla before, not sure if that's even possible

WIP of my Joseph Joestar pink varient rhinestone nightmare costume. It's a combo of one of the manga cover color palettes, the rhinestone super action statue figures and some artbook shit.
So much done, so much to go

>Belts
Got one left to bedazzle.
>Upper gloves
Finished, yet to decide if I'm doing anything to the lower gloves (not pictured), since I'm planning on covering them up with jewelry anyway.
>Bandana
Finished, it'll get to heavy if I do anything else. Just ordered a dark pink wig for the costume so that's something I'm excited for.
>Joseph's balls
Fukken done
>Top
I made it 2 years ago, so I need to formfit it before I can properly bedazzle what's left. Also not too sure where I want to go with the backpiece yet. Taking a break this week to think things over.
>>
>>9218833
>balls
theyre CLACKERS

That belt looks really nice tho. Must have taken forever to hand paint, unless you made a stencil?
>>
>>9219125
>clackers
Thanks for the info anon! English isn't my first language and it's been 8 years since I last read BT so I had kind of forgotten the word for those things haha.

And yeah, each belt took around 5-6 hours spread over 2 days to paint. Worth it though imo, I'm so happy with how it looks.

Another wip. Ears added and made his beanie hat.
>>
Diego's shirt & Gyro's goggles are done (with obligatory jesus).
Hat is a very small stand-in while I teach myself how to work with felt.
I wasted so many hours ironing on Diego's stripes only for them to crunch off in this cold weather so I had to take it apart and re-sew it all on instead. Lesson learned; Iron on adhesive doesnt work on wool.

Working on Heath's cuffs or whatever the fuck these things are called, and topstitching inside a tube is officially the worst thing ever. It's still lacking the decorative cord, but I don't have any large enough grommets at the moment so that'll have to wait

>>9218321
Wow, it all looks great
>>
>>9221294
Its all wonderflex and craft foam built around a premade goggle base that a friend insisted I use. It helped for sizing but also made keeping it smooth difficult since I was building around it.
Looking at it now, I'm going to take a dremel to the shutters but it was such a hassle to put together, I'd hate to rebuilt it atp.
>>
>>9221639
I totally feel ya. I'd show it to your friend and insist that at a later point it be remade the way you'd wanna go about it? Especially if you're making it. But that's extra work that's not necessary long as they're happy? lol.

>>9221630
You top stitched that AFTER putting it together? My condolences and my praise for putting yourself through that. Holy hell. It looks super clean though!~ What's the character from???

Thanks ! I wanted the topstitching to keep the sewing allowance flat in place so that it wouldn't bunch up when putting them on, so I had to do it at the end. Can't say it's the part I had the most fun doing, but I'm happy with how it looks and that people like it !

The character is Heath from the game Avalon Code. It has really cool chara-designs, and that guy has been my favourite character and a dream cosplay ever since I played it.

very very early WIP but I had the inspiration to make a miniature replica car from Initial D for C+A+D in two months.

I started with a furniture dolly and hacked off enough length to make it more maneuverable.
Then made space for my feet in the center by taking off the one end (gonna flintstone it)
I've since braced it in the middle and on top because I don't want any unwelcome surprises when I go drifting around a corridor.
Dimensions will be slightly off because I'm simply not a 10 year old asian child and have to work around that... Next projects are:
>sturdy lightweight subframe of (plywood?)
>outer frame of something cheap, probably cardboard
>paint and decorate frame to look like car
>authentic 'JDM' cupholders and "TOFU" license plate
>holder for bluetooth speaker so I can blast tinny europop as I crank corners at reckless speeds

I might even try for some headlights if I'm feeling particularly ambitious, it's been so long since I've wanted to actually make a costume so I'm just rolling with the motivation, no pun intended.

planchette.jpg
109KB, 1280x640px
I decided to make my own planchette necklace. I shaped them by hand just eyeballing it from sculpy and almost over-baked them. The simple shaped one is the trial and error test piece so that I can try things out as I go. I sealed a tiny circle of cellophane to make a bottom for the eye. Originally I was going to make the eye glittery on the heart version, yet I wanted a little more clarity and light to pass through. I came up with the idea to first let a few drops of clear varnish dry as a bottom layer, a layer of glitter then the dome on top in clear again. BUT as I was letting the first clear coat dry I noticed it naturally curved up towards the edges of the hole forming a lens. So it is a functioning planchette all I have left is to attach something to suspend it from a chain. I’m going to suspend it from 2 points on the uppercurves of the heart shape.

I've been working on a few things lately but most recently I finished a team skull grunt necklace.

>>9226725
you're probably sanding forever because it looks like you piled bondo on top of bondo and unevenly at that. do one layer at a time and get it as smooth onto the paper as you can. curves fucking suck to sand out but in the end doing multiple/uneven layers will likely cause a huge mess for you to clean up (and its a mega waste of bondo).
>>
>>9227446

This, thin layers man
>>
>>9227446
>>9227337
>>9227461

I had thought I was doing thin layers but I guess I didn't really know what 'thin layers' meant until I started working with bondo more. I'm still hitting the paper a lot with the sanding which makes me think that I dont have too much on it but I guess I do? ah well, first time for everything. I do have a palm sander but it's too difficult to get into the small places like the mouth, tongue, chin, and cheeks.
>>
>>9227446
That looks so slick!! What is your process???
>>
File: IMG_0858.jpg (2MB, 2448x3264px) Image search: [Google]
IMG_0858.jpg
2MB, 2448x3264px
I posted my Pyramid Head... head in a old WIP thread when it was just tape and cardboard. After weeks of paper mache and some wood glue this is pretty much it. Still there's a bit more that still needs to be done, obviously paint it, attach that tumor thing on it's back, and figure a way to see out of it. But I still don't have the robe made, the boots are pretty much undecided, and the great knife. Today I encountered a problem, a head strap taken from a hardhat, I put it in upside down. This was all meant for a con I'm going to before Halloween, but now I don't think it will be finished in time and I really don't want to rush it. But that's OK, I'll have more time to work on it until I go to the next con, and I already have a plan B costume.
>>
>>9227698
I forget what they're called but there's a "blade" looking thing you can use for tiny places like that. It's like a long rectangle of metal and the flat, small bottom end of it is really sharp and you can chip/peel away at the bondo with it. Wish the name wasn't escaping me. Also it's fine that you're sanding down to the paper right now since you're shaping, but just make sure you're keeping everything in balance with that. If one part is too thin and you have to raise it, you'll have to raise the stuff around that too usually or it'll look off. Most of your strength comes from whatever you did to sturdy your paper though anyways, so don't worry about the bondo you're building up ontop of it too too much. If you find your structure is still flimsy try using fiberglass cloth on the inside of the head.

>>9227939
It's just worbla & gesso, and after I prime the first time and sand it down I fill anything left that's being picky with bondo putty, sand again, gesso just a tiny bit again, sand again and then paint. Chrome paint for the silver, I had to use lacquer (since its all I had on hand) to seal it so the black acrylic would stick though so it dulled the shine down a lot.
>>
>>9228302
Thanks for the tips! Luckily the inside is already fiberglassed. The only thing that is not is he inside of the nose as it's a closed piece so I have been putting a little more bondo there. I have started patching some of the small holes and things and sanding it a bit while not totally hardened helped too. It's not easy but I'm excited to try out something entirely new.

First time cosplay maker here. I decided to work on something big, so I spent the last three months on the Barioth X armor from MH3U. Here is the helmet and the chestplate. I know they look pretty meh, but I'm honestly very proud of it!
>>
>>9228911
Honestly, the basic form isnt that bad, I would HIGHLY suggest you re-prime the pieces and repaint them. Take your time, use painters tape and do it a bit better. The paint is making a good first attempt look worse than it should. You got a good start, dont let it be awful due to paint.
>>
Making armor for my cat, because fuck you that's why.
>>
>>9228985
I was thinking about that. Next chance I get, I'm just gonna reprime it all and start from scratch. Thanks so much, anon. Now for the smaller details, should I use acrylic paint, or just spray paint everything? I tried acrylic paint for the smaller details on this one, so I just want to make sure.
>>
>>9229088
Use both, make sure you spray before acrylics as most sprays will do horrible stuff on top of acrylic paints. Also with acrylics thin your paints, add a bit of rubbing alcohol 70% or more to the paint and itll help hide your brush strokes.
>>
>>9229088
>>9229153

BTW I dont mean a 70% ratio of rubbing alch to paint, I mean 70% alcho as a concentration. You can get 91% as well but for most craft paints 70% will be fine.

I'd mix in 1 to 5 ration of alch to paint to start off with, you'll need more than one coat but there wont be brush strokes.
>>
>>9229158
Understood. Again, thanks so much for the tips. Hopefully I can make better things in the future.

Still sanding on this on/off, the weather has been too awful out so I haven't had a ton of working time. But I definitely understand what people mean by 'thin layers' now. I feel like I'm really learning a lot and that's pretty cool. He's got a patch above his eye I'm going to put bondo over because it drooped/warped in that spot. I also need to even out his eyes and make them a tad bit smaller to follow the parks costumes inspo so i'll do that sometime. I'd like to get it all sanded and patch up the eye area, then prime it, then fill in the air bubbles and such

Bringing back this thread from the dead.

Forgive the messy workroom

Another last minute Excalibur sword I am making for a friend on the other coastline, this time its the dark Alter version. Rapid pace construction for this since he wants it by thanksgiving. The blade and crossguard is all Sintra, layered 1mm and 3mm. The handle is made from pvc pipe built up with bondo then sanded on a lathe I made from an old black and decker drill. The blade has a 6mm steel rod running through the entire length for strength. The red detail parts I am still working on. The ones near the tip need a complete do-over as they came out too rough.

Excalibur Alter is now complete. All it needs is final clear coat and then I am shipping it out.

Quick comparison on it with my older Excalibur build on which this was based. If I were to make another Alter version Id probably try and make the red details pressed in on a lower layer or maybe do a version with a clear acrylic layer in the center with red leds.

>>
>>9257667
After looking at the ref image a little longer it just seems to be black panels that are tacked together around the elbow. I'd say make the white undergarment and then make 4-5 panels for each arm and attach them at the shoulder and wrist and tack them together in the middle. From there they can attach at the shaw.
>>
>>9257721
adding to this, look up "paned sleeves" (or "paned sleeves renaissance") for ideas. you could do them as big pleats, or you could do the black as an overlay.

Spent the long holiday working on some props for my [G] type Gundam.

The 100mm machine gun was built using the innards from a toy gun. It has sounds, moving gun barrel, vibration and light effects. The side handle can move and magnetically locks into place when not extended. I took some metal rod and bent it into shape to make the folding stock, which also works and magnetically stows when not in use.

I am a bit worried that the shield is slightly oversized but I haven't been able to wear it with the rest of the suit yet so I am not really sure. Some of the edges of the shield are a bit rough but I intend to have the shield pretty heavily battle damaged with a dremel and heat knife before this is finished so that should be fine.

All of the detail on the hand is paint on fabric yeah. The larger piece on top and the bolts are all foam layered on top of it. First time making wings and a wing harness. I did a little bit more to it after this but this is the basic skeleton. There's pvc inside the backpack backing to make the frame and it's going to be attached to a pulley system so it can open and close. I'm going to eventually make a cover for it so it's not hideous and it matches the rest of the cosplay.

i think im going to remake the breastplate and i'm having issues with my straps though. i used e6000 to glue the vinyl onto the foam, on some sides it holds, others snapped right off. any idea why this is happening/any suggestions for a better way to keep them on?

You can go single-plate boob loaf Legacy style, you can go bra cup style, you can go Bo Katan style, or you can go non-fitted male style. My plates for my kit are the somewhat non-fitted variety, and they actually sit on top of the bust with very little underbust coverage (underbust coverage is achieved with the ab plate). This requires a vest to mount them on that isn't skintight, though. Legacy is a completely different style altogether, and except for the helmet and chest diamond it doesn't usually read Mandalorian at first glance.

Bo Katan and bra cup are some of the most popular for thinner ladies, since they make you look like you're smuggling helmets in your shirt. Bo Katan is basically a really boxy coconut bra, and bra cup plates are usually vacformed off mannequin boobs. I'd recommend investing in Kamui's boob armor book if she wants fitted boob armor.

If your GF is already smuggling helmets in her shirt she may want the Legacy plate or non-fitted male plate. If she wants to look like she has helmets in her shirt, Bo Katan or bra cup plates are a good bet. If she's DFC you can get away with just sorta bending some Jango plates to make it kinda look like she has boobs.

A few tips if you don't mind. If your attempting to do more realistic weathering look into dry brushing. Basically get your brush wet with silver or gunmetal and dry it in a paper towel. Lightly dust edges with the brush to build up small amounts of silver paint.

Another option is to paint the entire weapon silver then coat the weapon entirely in hairspray. When that dry coat again in your desired final color. With the hairspray layer you can chip away the top layer to reveal silver underneath for a realistic chipping effect. Clear coat when complete to seal the effect.
>>
>>9294162
>>9297216

I know i might be late to thi, but i would also suggest implementing a glove to this since the rings look like something that can slip off your finger when wearing it, and if the ring is sewn on a glove you wear it has no chance to get off the finger or at least you can hook it rather easy after it slips.
>>
>>9328846

I wanna pitch in since it looks like a really great build, but a bit wierd of a paint job.

Go look at pictures of old metalic things, where the paint chips and what to weather. Generally indentations and such gather dirt, while edges get chipped and paint stripped off and get silvery like >>9328997 said.

Lots of sanding.

Sorry to say but thats really it. It took the better part of the week with sanding by hand and with a mouse sander for the broader areas. Start with 120 grit and go up to 400. Once you feel you got it good, throw some filler primer on it and see what else you need to do. Add your bondo, and get back to sanding.

Looking good, I'm going to try to get my own 3d printer somewhere this spring/summer. It looks like a very convenient tool, especially since I have plenty of experience in 3d modelling myself so I can make my own 3d printed stuff (now i usually create and fold my own pepakura stuff).

Although I can never shake the feeling that it's somewhat cheating, so I think I will only do it for prop commissions and small stuff. Is definitely very useful to create one 3d print master and then cast copies, from regularily wanted pieces (e.g. overwatch)

Currently trying out some homemade silicone cast (silicone caulk, corn starch, added mineral spirit to make it pourable). Will probably have to sand the result a lot to get a smooth result.
>>
>>9331764
Would vapour forming on ABS be better than sanding?
>>
>>9331084

Working on 3D printed sombra gun so I'll add in my two cents as well

>>9331764 said it best and it's really a lot of sanding. I'm on the 3rd pass with filler primer/sanding with some spot putty on problematic areas

I did try some xtc-3D on some of the smaller pieces and it's pretty good for a smooth surface. Did a light sand pass with 220 grit to get rid of the glossy nature of the coat and looked pretty decent.
>>
>>9334060

It's just a tool like everything you use hence why I don't think it's cheating. It's like saying having a band saw is cheating as the machine is doing most of the cutting.

No one cares how you did it when the end result looks good
>>
>>9334127
Do you have progress pics?
>>
>>9334060
>Although I can never shake the feeling that it's somewhat cheating,
Trust me it aint. Theres way much more work in 3d printing that anyone thinks. I've always seen cosplaying with things like sewing, body painting, makeup, and armor making to be an artistic skill. With 3d printing im doing shit like 3d modeling, tinkering with the 3d printer, calibrating, checking filament temps, orienting the model to print better. So to me its all weirdly technical skills. Just as much work but with a different skill set.

Dry brushing is usually a good idea, but it depends on the type of thing you're working on. Finer details don't take to drybrushing well, neither do tremendous objects. I'd say repaint it anyways and give it some more color depth. the weathering is terrible.

If you're gonna weather, keep it to the edges and details. Those realistically weather faster, and that's what drybrushing naturally does, accumulating paint on the peripheral elements.

>>9333769
>>9331767
>>9334140
>>9334127

Thing with 3D printing is that you can get AMAZING curves out of it, and incredibly fidelity, but the detail is butchered. You're better off printing a basic model, then attaching details independently. Something like the sombra gun would be terrible to 3D print, too many little details. If it's angular just build it out of foam, much easier.
>>
>>9334402

Those little details on sombra gun printed fine.

I'd say that it's not really practical for larger thing like a full on helmet or torso armor due to the amount of time printing and then sanding.

They might have come out, but they've still got the creases of the 3D layers. How are you gonna bondo them out? That would take days, if it's even possible, to do.

It'd be easier to trim the model down, and then attach the details seperately.

>>9334807
Honestly, at this point, I don't think you need any more weathering. Looks great as is, MAYBE a quick enamel wash to bring out the ridges on the top.

Less man, alot less. Your brush should be almost completely dry if your doing dry-brushing. use a paper towel after dipping the brush in the paint and squeeze it out with the paper towel. Even then brush edges lightly, don't just dab randomly. Shoot for uniform buildup throughout or on areas where excessive wear would happen on a real weapon. Subtly is the key.

>>
>>9336316
>>9336317
Better, compared to the weathering attempt up above you are def on the right track.
Tone it down a bit more and add some other colors. Your gun didn't get thrashed about in a sterilized clean room. Dust, dirt, oil are all needed to add to the realism of it.

The nice part is if you start adding dust and oil coloring to it, it should tone down the chipping.

The third issue is that you will need to decide if you want your props to look good on camera, or in person. In person itll need to be MUCH more subtle, but the camera wont capture all the detail so youll just need to tone it down just a little bit more.

I'm super excited to see how it'll look when I'm done, and crossing my fingers that I'm going to like it as this cannot be redone without ruining the top.

That will work for a little amount. I'd use:
Dark grey/ black
Medium grey
Tan

Get some pastels and some oil paints in those colors. Main issue is your using dry brushing for areas where your wanting chipping. The metal wouldn't stay that shiny on top of it all.
Take a toothpick and dip it in the grey and use it to tap along the edges. This will create a better effect that your wanting to achieve. For the dust, use some tan pastels or oil based paint, lightly apply it to and area and then rub off about 90% of it so only the stuff in the nooks remain. Do this on the dark areas, use the black/grey mix for the tan areas.

Working on Nel from Bleach! Tonight I'm finishing up her mask :) pretty happy with it so far, I did mess up the teeth so ignore that I'm fixing it. Can't wait to wear her!

It's a mock up in its early stages. The shoulder cape hasn't been drafted, belts haven't been made. This is like the first 10% of drafting progress.

10/10 cat, 3/10 jacket
>>
>>9339090
I don't know if it will affect the ratings but the cat was constantly trying to climb up inside my petticoat while I was taking this pic. (She's still technically a kitten).
But the cardigan is slytherin and it's mean to be a casual coord, my camera quality is shoddy because I'm a poorfag with a shit phone. Or else, higher priorities over having a good phone
>>

....okay, 11/10 cat, 5/10 cardigan
If you have a plain cardigan or something it'd probably look super cute, not sure how much is potato camera but it just looks a little too much like a random bomber jacket and messes up the silhouette/clashes with the other stripes on the scarf and skirt a little to me? It'll still be mighty Slytherin without it!
Might I ask what print that is though, and if they by any chance did a navy colourway?
>>

The print was from an etsy shop called "violet fane". Which I found when specifically looking for harry potter lolita things on etsy.
Unfortunately, the skirts were a very limited edition print, they were pre order only. (I got really lucky on finding them). She may still have the dresses in Gryffindor print, but the skirts were the only ones that featured the other houses.
I still would recommend book marking her store, as she has some very nice prints.

Making some stylized wings for Mew Mint. Details and backsides remaining before I put them together. The outfit is mostly finished as well.

Just out of curiosity, are you planning to smooth out the edges (from cutting with a dull blade)? If so, how? I've had this exact problem on so many of my props that I don't know what to do anymore...
>>
>>9340854
I've actuallu rounded most of the edges with some sand paper and a nail filer before painting. The surface is overall pretty ragged where I've done this but it really helped with the overall shape and is not noticable from a distance!
As in any protruding edges are gone but areas appear to look like an eraser after heavy use on inspection.

I think what I should've done before painting was maybe to research ways of priming the surface. Alternatively there might be a way of smoothing out the surface by way of paint sealant or the like.

I'll keep an eye out for possible solutions for my future projects.

I want to learn to make silicone masks, for cosplay and potentially for scary monsters in indie projects (my cousin is a film student and has won some state and regional awards).

I've looked into the process, and evidently I need to start by learning to sculpt, as these masks are made from a mold.

So now I'm looking into where to learn to sculpt.

I guess "getting started" is a work in progress.
>>
>>9340953
Get some cheap 'training' clay at any hobby store. Depending on the store they sell anywhere between 1lbs and 25lbs. I also got some gypsum for the mould, looked up a couple two-part moulding for liquid latex tutorials and bought RD407 liquid latex for the eventual cast.
Turned out pretty okay for first time custom latex gloves/claws

Pictured is my first ever glove that needs adjusting. Also some progress of the sleeve puffs. Bottom left corner shows before and after sewing the lace down against the fabric.

Silicone is dated, learn to 3d model instead.

If it's a real issue, you can always 3d print a mold

Don't listen to this asshole. There is no real artistry in 3D modeling and is frowned upon in competition.

Mints arm and leg attatchments are on hold til Monday/Tuesday when I get more lace. I messed up dyeing the second batch and also underestimated how much I needed.

To keep myself busy and out of the dumps I've begun patterning Kikko from Concrete Revolutio. Almost finished with the bodice and collar pattern and I should already have most fabrics needed.

I do 3d modelling as a profession and sometimes i 3D print but theres nothing as cool as handworking a mould

I used to work at a professional prop shop before doing more 3D, and I can say that there's just as much.

Granted, printing out a game model is a bit lazy, but I'd argue that 3d sculpting is harder and more labor intensive than carving or clay sculpting a regular mold.

>>9343129
True. I do enjoy putting together things out of sintra or carving wood too, and 3D isn't good for EVERY application. But when it comes to organic shapes or shapes that have to be mirrored, 3D printing allows for more detail. Obviously you should still finish with bondo and other handworked touchups though.

Yes, of course. I can't wait till i gathered enough money to purchase my own 3D printer and I'll be able to print all my own designs whenever I want. In regard to clay sculpting or 3d sculpting I would say it's about the same time taken, but the latter is more subject to experience and tools imo.

Agreed, 3D printing has its place but making something by hand is so much more rewarding.

Hahahahahhaa, oh he's serious. I've been working in the film industry making props for 6 years now. You're correct that a good bit of it is 3d printing, but don't give me that crap that it is more labor intensive to 3D model than to fabricate something. It's more tedious than anything.
