There aren't any "versions" of Rei from NGE.

Rei III moves Rei's character forwards, happens naturally and believably, and touches greatly on everything past in Rei's character. In other words, it's still Rei Ayanami. Same name, same character, never a question about it.

Rei Q? Not so much. Rei Q isn't even Rei. Rei Q is patently another character, and another stab at the heart of Rei from the messed up directors/writers because they are still mad Rei is so much more popular than their own "faves". Don't need to watch Rebuild to figure out who that is.

Rei Q can't be described as anything but deliberate sabotage to ensure that Rei's character never fruition to anything whatsoever in the story besides an attack on Rei's character and image.

About the amnesia thing, I don't want to get too deep into the Ship of Theseus idea because yeah, personhood is a hard concept to pin-down. But my take is that Rei is as much of a trinity as God is.

Rei I, II, and III are consubstantial in that they hold the same soul, yet are distinct into each has a different origin, body and personality.

The difference is that God is a 'set' trinity, in that it's three persons, and only three persons. While Rei is a 'circumstancial' trinity, she could have been 1, 2, 4 or more if circumstances were different.

In Rebuild both Rei and Q are part of a series of clones of Yui Ayanami, each quite capable of being their own person, this makes them more like regular clones. I think of Rei more as reincarnating, like Vishnu, than as any kind of trinity- though certainly in Third Impact her three forms seem to be treated as somewhat independent.

To be honest it seems to me that reincarnation is the standard fate of souls in Eva's cosmology- this explains how people are still being born even after Lilith's Chamber of Guf is empty, and renders the transfer of souls between bodies that Nerv and Seele do regularly just a controlled version of a natural process. Moreover reincarnation is, for the Japanese, a default notion of death- just as a pseudo-Christian heaven and hell are for even non-religious Westerners. This makes Seele's motives even clearer- they're essentially materialist Buddhists (or Schopenhauerists).

Rei, of course, has a soul with a pretty high power level, so she retains her individuality a lot more than most do upon reincarnation.

One might also bring up the idea, current on Evageeks, that Rei II does not contain all of Rei's soul, the other part being inside Unit-00. What are y'all's thoughts on that?

I think there's a difference between what happens to Shinji in ep 20 or in Rebuild 3.33 (which is a bit like what you describe, the person reconstituting it's body from its soul) from what Rei goes through after each death!.

To extend the Theseus analogy, and apply it to eva imagine Theseus is the soul and the ship is the body.

What Shinji goes through is as if Theseus dismantled his own ship and then rebuild it from the same pieces.

What happens to Rei is as if Theseus lost his ship in battle and had another one rebuild to the same specifications, so he could go on fighting (each ship is a different ship and would have different origins and experiences but they all are 'Theseus ship' because Theseus is riding them.)

Rei Q, as if some other incompetent warrior went ahead and built a ship to to match Theseus' exact specifications so that he could become Theseus. He ain't.

I agree with that idea, but disagree with the notion that that makes Rei II's soul lesser than that of a regular person since each person is supposed to be a fragment of Lillim in the first place and thus Lilim is WAAAAY more fragmented than Lilith. Whatever bonding issues Rei II has as a human being have more to do with who raised her than what she is.

The only one and simple truth, that it literally doesn't matter and never will. There are any number of theories that may work out because 3.33 is such a shallow, baseline work that provides neither a reliable narrator or a detailed course of events. Which theory the story eventually becomes closer to is of little consequence.

Rei Q may be Rei from the previous movie (2.22), removed from EVA01 and brainwashed into being Rei Q. She may be 100% Rei, 50% Rei or just 1/1000th Rei, it doesn't matter. It will in all possible scenarios result in a Rei that is deliberately inferior to the original, and that is unacceptable. Again, like some other anon suggested, splitting up Rei is merely divide and conquer, crushing Rei into several small pieces that never make a full, consistent whole.

Far too much time has been wasted, and all the time it did spend was simply to gratify Asuka fans with the whole shaming of Rei as a puppet and a clone of Yui, Yui Ayanami at that.

You can take that back to the Evageeks filth and rub them in their faces with it.
