you need to add to this file the address of these nodes, otherwise the wallet doesn't know where to look.

maybe they built the software before they had sorted out the nodes. there are always new nodes that become available, so while the bitcointalk ANN mentions 2, there are about 70 more that you can add more more connections, so this process of adding nodes to the .conf file isn't that big of a deal.
people who are into crypto know how to do this because it is common.
a lot of people don't even use the wallet, and just keep their coins on the exchanges, so it isn't a huge issue.

that would suggest we're almost half way through.
i think it about 1 minute per block, which means mining would be for another 34 days/7weeks.

none of what i have said i am certain about though. there are 7.5million coins and there will be a total of 30 million, which would suggest that it's 25% through, but maybe the mining reward gets more later, i don't know.
