Regarding coins you should invest in, I suggest you lurk here a lot. POT was talked about on here when it was 500 sat, which makes for a very nice profit when it gets to 6k sat.

Is it worth your time? Only if you really do have time and an at least semi-analitic mind.
But if you do and you can plow through the first couple of terrible trades that you will make out of panic and inexperience, you can double your investments quite easily. For example I have turned 0.5 BTC into 3 BTC simply by listening to /biz/ and filtering all the things that look like a complete scam.

Is it even possible to get higher than the lowest tier on most faucet sites (for bitcoin)?

I only got higher once on faucet chutyvaz

Given the high volume and low price of POTcoin, isn't basically guaranteed to be pumped soon?
Also it'd only cost 160btc to pump its price to +25%, while it'd cost 420btc to pump ETC to +25%, 338btc to pump REP to +25% (these examples given because they're the only other coins near that volume)
High volume = greater incentive for the bagholders to pump
Low resistance = less reason for said bagholders to not pump
