Why do crypto currencies generally get harder over time to mine, rather than the first block taking the longest and halving from there?

One of the reasons I never got into bitcoin was the barrier to entry for mining - it is pretty much impossible for me to mine a whole block of coins, short of buying a warehouse full of ASIC miners or joining a pool.

If the barriers to entry dropped over time instead of raised, more people would start using it.

If I margin buy (long) 1000 of a coin and then I issue a margin sell of 1000 of the coin at whatever price, will my margin position close?

I've been clicking the close button manually for my trades, but that has the .25% fee and can have slippage.
