Idiocracy. The movie was an awesome comedy. Now, I watch it and get scared more and more, as it becomes a psychic level prediction and now becoming a documentary.

>>744851971
Im not sure if you mean like movies that make you just feel like legit scared or horror movies.

And I don't know any real scary movies at the top of my head. But for great horror there is The Evil Dead trilogy(original) and the Hammer films are pretty good if you can see past the age of the movies.
>>
>>744851591
Rec wasn't too bad, but other than that I'm totally with you.
VHS had one or two interesting segments, but they were good for their direction or ideas not the horror. Not even remotely scary.

Fuck, I honestly can't think of a film I've ever seen that made me scared other than when I was a kid. I had two nightmares that I remember vaguely, one from Backdraft and one from that movie with Dustin Hoffman battling ebola... I forget the fucking name.

Horror movies have always been ineffective garbage, but the idea of things that could happen in reality and you're powerless to avoid were scary as a kid.
>>
>>744850071

I don't get the appeal of "scary" films? Why do people like them?

I have literally never been scared of one, even as a child. Maybe that has something do do with it.

the slow walking is supposed to build suspense, and dread, contained within the fact that no matter where you go it will find you. it follows.

suspense and dread are something someone with ADD is somewhat immune to though, so if you have that, it's probably less effective on you.

This is probably the most fucked up film I have ever seen. I'm talking about the original French/Canadian one not the remake.

It's worse than A Serbian Film or any of the other torture porn flicks out there.
>>
>>744850848
All jokes aside, I think Babadook is interesting. I mean, it was a giant let down, as I was expecting a creepy indie-flick, but I got an artsy movie about anxiety and stress.
It is more of an art-project than a horror-movie and should be judged as that. Sadly, it was mismarketed as a horror-movie, which just destroyed what could have been so much better.

Threads
>>
I realize this thread is about the scariest movies there are. My suggestion is not the scariest but it's well worth a watch. It's called Mama. The hipsters in this thread will claim its bad, but if there were an original full length film made in the 80s, then they would say the original was awesome. It's a newer film and it preys on the type of fear that comes from seeing something that looks mostly human, but not quite human. It's not the scariest, but it's a stellar movie. If anyone disagrees, please explain in detail why.
>>
I found The Oprhanage to be pretty scary.
>>
>>744853175
Scary films are hard to come by. Sadly "horror"-movies are not. There are so many rubbish movies to watch, that getting to some actually good ones are hard. Besides, what scares you, really differs from one person to the other.

I just watched the new IT-movie, which actually freaked me out at times, not scared me, but got under my skin. Call me a weak beta all you want, but I genuinely enjoy it, as it really gets me thinking

>>744854124
yes all these things are supposed to happen. but they didn't. the suspense was ruined by the hilarious plot inaccuracies, shit acting and terrible premise in the first place. 1/10 had partial nudity.
>>
>>744854237
I actually found the suspense-building in It follows to be the best quality of the movie. Which doesn't say much, cause I think the movie sucked on so many levels. However, campy horror that gets in your head and makes it feel like something is always there, watching you, waiting, is the best kind. Most horror-movies today are like "Have some gore topped with a bunch of cheap jumpscares! We're so great at making scary movies!". If you want to watch gore, get TOR or just go on /rekt/, and who wants cheap jumpscares? Just put up a creepy image, blast some loud obnoxious music and go ham on Alt+tab

The original 'The Changeling' was good. A lot of concepts that were used or referenced in later horror movies. Nice classic ghost story, and the main character has serious balls.
I quite liked 'The Conjuring'; believable possession/demon story, decent acting.
The 'Insidious' movies (at least the first 2) were quite good. They had a slightly unique premise, they went about it in a clever way, and linked the two movies well. Again, good acting.
'The Grudge' was good, but the original 'Ju On' was better.
'The Ring' creeped me out like hell the first time I saw it. Was pretty young though,
The movies that don't do it for me are torture porn, jump-scare, and that retarded 'found footage' crap. If you can't make a horror movie a decent movie in the traditional sense, I'm not into it.
I like a decent ghost or demon story that's believable in its own lore/context.
>>
After The Exorcist I' not sure there is a movie that can "scare" anyone exactly. One nightmarish movie that sticks in my mind is The "Hour of the Wolf " (a Bergman Film) that is not a horror per se.There are movies that are creepy, suspenseful, disturbing, violent and whatever category Eraserhead falls into, but actually scary - I can't think of any

I may have understated my love of the movie "Mama" in my previous post. I have seen the movie 5 times, and would happily watch it again. With the restriction of 'not the scariest, ' Mama is the best horror movie in my estimation. Hear me out. The exposition is solely show, and not told. The dialog is believable. Acting nominal. The ghost's motive is clearly defined and relatable, to the point that you can see its feelings inside yourself. The cgi isnt perfect, but good enough for immersion. There is essentially no gore. I recognize that gore is an important part of the horror genre, but gore more encourages the emotion of "disgust" rather than "fear" which is in my opinion, a distraction from what is important about a horror movie. The pacing and suspense-building in Mama is well executed and frequently builds a strong sense of clear urgency. The use of jump scares are minimal, and some of the scariest parts are drawn out scenes. I would chance to say that it is an obvious 10/10 horror movie. Sorry for grammar mistakes

The third was good, but I was kind of expecting a sequel, and not a prequel. The end of 2 was a great cliffhanger which 3 didn't follow up on (yet).

August Underground Mordum isn't scary, but has some decent semi - realistic gore and torture. Also Tetsuo: the Iron Man creeped me out because of how it was filmed, and the soundtrack. Movies don't scare me, but The Thing is one of my favorite classics

Thank you for sharing my specific viewpoint on Martyrs vs A Serbian Film.

Anyone I discuss with instantly go to A Serbian Film as the most disturbing while I feel it is too flashy and fast paced to really be anything other than disgusting. Except for the ending of course, I'll give it that.

Martyrs on the other hand is a prime example of atmosphere, the most important aspects of horror. Martyrs has a sense of hopelessness that just increases as the movie progresses and it has those horribly violent moments spread out.
