I was in Military school for 4 years and I always had to keep a clean cut. I grew my dreads out of spite because I always wanted long hair but couldnt have it there. But now they were just too much to maintain and getting them constantly redone is most costly than getting an edge up every couple weeks.

Mine were thick.mostly because they started as naturally dreads because my hair is really curly. After the first year I got them locked in place and kept them in order

If you have natural dreads they are. But if you get them locked and let hair keep growing under your locks it will look weird and kinda then so I'd get them re done every so often. They also dont "clean" themselves. Theyre sort of easy to wash tho,you just soak them in your shampoo/conditioner,let it sit for awhile if you're using conditioner,then when you go to rinse,you squeeze them like a sponge to get all the dirt and dead skin from the day out
