>>726173875
I never knew it was used for ground support, I thought it was a like astrike bomber . does it even have a gun?
yo
>>726174230
no, even though it has a stick like a fighter jet instead of a steering wheel type thing like other bombers and airliners do. The B-1 was built for performance and maneuverability, something you can't live without while going low and fast.
>>726173569
ICBM's launch out of fixed well-known positions that can be targeted or sabotaged. They can be intercepted by missile defense systems. They also take the longest time to deliver, your enemy has plenty of time to retaliate. Strategic bombers move around and fly missions all the time, they're a first-strike weapon.
all about that F/A-18
>>726174712
with the B-1
ive heard that this was the greatest thing of its era and it was CIA conspiracy that destroyed it. ive also heard it was just to expensive and didn't have good range. what does B/ think?

>>726173835
It may or may not exist. Government swears it doesn't exist. I'm inclined to believe that, not because they said so, but because we can't keep secrets for shit anymore.
>>726169102
Hate to break it to you guys, but the A-10 is an overrated, normie-tier piece of military hardware. It had the highest attrition rate of any aircraft in modern US warfare, even when compared to other Aircraft performing CAS. In modern conventional warfare it would be torn apart by AAA and AA, and in COIN operations you're better off using a cheaper, easier to maintain, and more effective aircraft such as the A-29(which has an exceptional service history when compared to the A-10.
Inb4 BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT-tards
>>726174859
ehh, didn't it not have a gun? Also, it was better to standardize the fighters, with the US getting the starfighter, it would be bad if canada got a different one, would mess with NORAD

>>726175191
No, fuck you
>>726175068
I completely agree with you. The A-10 is perfect for an environment where it has air and ground superiority. Like Iraq and Syria today. No way it would live in a European battlefield today. The gun can't probably even penetrate modern day tanks. Hell, even back in 1989, the life expectancy of the ENTIRE air fleet of A-10s in Europe was about 48-72 hours if WW3 kicked off.
And the pic is a Tu-160, Russian version of B-1
SU 25 got shot down 60 times(because they dont fight muslims, just in real wars) If the A-10 went to better than muslims, they would ALL get shot down...The A-10 is worth NOTHING!

>>726173343
Hell yeh boi
>>726175496
I like the prospect of upgrading perfectly good F-18s. We need to bring back the Raptors and develop new Warthogs altogether.
>>726175699
Why the hell did the gov't waste its time with the F35 when the F22 is a thing?
>>726175995
cuz the original idea was to have the F-35 be a F-16 replacement: A jack of all trades fighter, but stealth. F-22 was air superiority only, and minimal strike capability.
>>726175167
problem with it is it wasn't meant to carry weapons internally, so to fix that they add a weapon pod shown here . but that's not a huge payload
>>726175995
Money. The F-22 was expensive as hell, the F-35 was supposed to be a cheap, mass produced, universal aircraft that would serve all branches of the military.
>>726175995
Egg fucking zackly. The F-22 and F-15 are the best machines to make it into production in my opinion. We obviously can't keep F-15s much longer but F-22s are as perfect as it gets. They should just finish the original order and upgrade the F-18s.
>>726174859
The Conservative Government in Canada wanted to cut costs and create a more homogeneous NORAD force. It was to be used as a missile and fast craft interceptor. Instead the Canadian government picked up Starfighters and Voodoo's and purchased Boeing Bomarc Anit-missile Missiles ( I know theres a better word, just cant think of it at the moment).
The Arrow as an aircraft was a technical achievement for its era and would have yet today been useful through modernization as a recce aircraft to patrol Canadian boarders. It tested well at supersonic speeds, the delta wing design was at the head of that field. Mach 2 in 1958 is astonishing. It had the same engines as the U2 spy plane.
Tl;dr money, political backing, and its new unproven nature killed it off
>>726176150
I've never seen a F-18 with CFTs before. Neat.

It's funny how it ended up being more expensive. It's $85 million without the engine. Once you add that in with the upgrades they still have to do it costs the same as the F-22 and isn't nearly as stealthy.
>>726176373
>>726176432
Its actually cheaper. The F-22 were 339 million, and they are projecting the F-35 to be around 150-200 million

I thought it was a completely different airframe?

>>726169102
U no it bby
>>726176527
No the F-22s were 200 million including development. The F-35s are 135 million before development factors. It's seven times more expensive than originally planned. That wasn't nearly a problem with the F-22s and they had less than half the issues by the time orders were filled.

>>726176911

>>726176930
Well shit, something developed in 1990s is going to be cheaper than something in 2017, due to inflation alone. Other than that, a jack-of-all trades fighter is going to be more expensive than a general air superiority fighter to develop. As well as more tech going into a single F-35 than 4 F-22s. Some are calling the F-35 a "Mini-AWACS" because it has everything, from IRST to a built in jammer.

B1B dropping Munitions on unknown desert country
>>726177252
I don't really see a problem with what they're doing with the F-35 as much as what they did to get there. For some reason the US Govt just decided to let Lockheed do the entire process alone. Basically they could make a million promises and keep sucking in the cash when something went wrong. Basically they need to tell us why the product they have is better and sell it to us as advertised day one. Every other fight program would've been cancelled by now because we used to have standards.
>>726173083

actually correction, those might also be test munitions being released on a range inside the United States
>>726177712
Yep, this is it getting a simulated "guns kill" on a F-22
Before you use this as proof that F-22 is shit, they intentionally nerfed the F-22 so a WVR fight would occur, and the F-22 sill won in 4-5 engagements

>>726171897
>>726172152
>>726174008
Aaaand I came.
Among many other problems with the F-35 at current, the software is buggy as fuck, and a great deal of information is processed by a location on the ground and relayed to the aircraft, if it loses communication with home base, it goes partially blind.
>>726177844
yeah, but also every flight program wasn't as publicized as this. Just take a look at the F-15 and F-16 development cycles, those were disasters too.
>>726176885

can it even carry troops or is it just a gunship?
>>726177934

>>726177664
I wanna like the F-35 but I've heard so much shit about it. I'm not an expert though so I don't know what to believe
>>726178065
It was a gunship. They were about to order it, then the cold war ended and they halted development. Damn shame.
>>726178128
I am by no means an expert either, but from what I have heard on general military forums and by navy pilots who have flown the sim, they think its getting a lot of bad press and that once all the kinks are sorted out, it will be a great plane. As backwards as the US government may seem, they would not keep funding money into something that shows absolutely no promise.
>>726176930
I think its still better than the alternative

Boeing never had a real chance. The competition was between Boeing and their partners, and Lockheed and their partners, during a period when Bush was in office. Bush happens to be from Texas, aaaand so is Lockheed. There's also Dick to take into account... Some years back Boeing managed to royally piss dick Cheney off, I think it involved the A-12 project but I can't fully recall.

In theory, but in practice things are different. When the A10 was designed, battlefield tactics were different than what they are today.
