Look dude you are right in that the M4/M16 rifle will half charge so you can put the safety on, so the AR15 will most likely do the same but essentially your STILL charging the fucking rifle (hammer down) to get that selector to safe.

I was taught to pull the charging handle about 1/4-1/3 of the way back, then rotate the selector to safe and release.

Weapon now safed and uncharged. I used this to cheat a bit during PLDC as we had to walk around with a round chambered at all times, then clear it before entering a building. This gets old when going from class room to barracks to class room to PT to chow to barracks etc. So I "simulated" the round in the chamber so I could just drop the mag, count the 3 rounds and clear it without chasing a flying round or juggling to get it before it pops out.

I would not ever do this in combat. I wouldn't do it anywhere else ever period.

Actually, no. Read some SWAT statistics, they consider a knife to be a lethal weapon at 20 yards, because it takes a couple of seconds for your brain to register the fact that the situation changed and you need to shoot followed by a half second to actually fire the weapon.
Someone pointing a gun at you and not firing immediately does not *intend* to fire it if he doesn't have to. Now unless you're going to cheat and insist that you'd already have your gun drawn before the crackhead, you have a few options to consider:
>drawing your gun
>drawing a knife
either of these things is going to take long enough for the crackhead to decide to fire. Your gun is not going to solve this problem any more efficiently than a knife.
>grab the crackhead's gun
This is actually your most survivable option, because it doesn't require preparation like drawing your gun or knife (or crowbar, or dildo, or whatever). Grab the gun and turn around while stepping toward the crackhead. Put your back right up to his chest so you're *behind* the gun instead of in front of it. Then beat him in the face with the back of your head. Keep your hand on top of the pistol so if it goes off you can keep the slide from cycling fully to chamber the next round. If you get it out of his hand without it going off, you win.
If he's still on your back reaching for the gun, lean forward, look down, and shoot him in the foot.
If he makes a break for it, you got a free gun and a cool story no one will believe. Do NOT shoot him in the back as he's running away, even cops have trouble getting away with this.
