Handguns chambered in 9mm usually have greater magazine capacity due to the smaller size of the cartridge. Those extra 2-4 rounds can save your damn life. 9mm can kill or at least debilitate your target with a hit to the torso. The difference in power between .40, .45 and 9mm is not night and day.

Larger caliber rounds aren't usually hot loaded like smaller rounds are.

Smaller calibers are usually loaded with more powder to increase muzzle velocity and impact energy to compensate for lower bullett mass.

So a big, heavy 45 has lower muzzle torque than a 9mm +p, or +p+ load. The gun itself is also larger and heavier, so it absorbs recoil better.

This is why the M1911 was the prefered sidearm of the US military for over 70 years.

Actually, the 223 round was NOT designed to be a killer. When it was developed, the idea was to create a debilitating, but not always deadly, wound in opposing force members. A live wounded soldier needs evac and meds. This reduces opfor resources more than a simpke dead soldier does.

For general purpose, 9mm beats .40 S&W. The FBI had switched from 9mm to .40S&W rounds for ~15 years before switching back after research determined the 9mm had more stopping power.

As for the .45ACP, its only real use is big game hunting/defense. .357 can take out smaller, weaker bears with well placed shots but you run the risk of non-fatally wounding them and sending them into a frenzy. If a gun is your best defense, anything less than .44 caliber won't cut it.

If you go to Canada though, you're going to need a rifle to kill any bear you meet.

5.56 is an incredibly weak round IMHO.

Shooting my 10" AR500 gong (.375" thick) it barely makes a mark with 55gr. FMJ, my .22-250 with 40gr. hollow points will punch through second shot. A lot of states will not allow deer hunters to use .22-250 because of "lack of stopping power".
