US outlets are 110-120 so the cords and plugs don't need be be that robust. You run 240 through a US cord and it will melt.

The UK-plug maybe better in its electrical qualities, but I think the EU plug is a bit easier to grab compared to the UK system, as far as I can remember from my time in London.
