i think about this shit daily. I always wondered what it would be like if a few of us just set a small community innawoods. I think it would work out good if we had 10-50 people. Everyone could do different things so we could have a small efficient community without all the fakeness and pressures of society, more of a take care of you land type of deal. No need for an economy if we have things to hunt and water to drink, we could be pretty cozy.

It can be done Les Stroud and his wife lived a pre-Columbian lifestyle in the Canadian shield for a year after they got married. They even had to come out of the bush once that year from illness. They have orders of magnitude more experience with this then you do.

No you will die. At least practice edible wild plant and wild mushroom identification. You also need to practice trapping, figure four deadfalls and snares, and the like. Big game hunting probably ain't happening so your going to be eating rodent. Start by doing some trials for a week or so then maybe 2. Learn what can go wrong and what works before the consequences are deadly.

I have been eating edible wild plants and mushrooms since I was 7. I'm 35 now, there are plenty of times of year where in my area there just is zero plant based calories available. Primitive man ate alot of one thing for a short amount of time as one resource becomes available and another fades. Sometimes those appearances don't overlap.

If you are hell bent on this, wait until early spring so you have a fighting chance come winter, though I doubt you make it 2 months before heading back or dying.

It is a huge amount of work and planning. Disappearing has been what has kept me alive for so long and I have been planning it for years.
It takes thousands of dollars in equipment if you wish to have any real chance of succeeding.
You really need to look into the area you plan to go, check it out during all seasons and see what the conditions are like, how sustainable are the local resources are, is there water year round, are you going to hunt? If so what animals and how many?
Will you farm? If so what food and how will the weather effect it?
Start a journal and write these questions down and answer them, draw designs of cabins and begin working out because it will be very hard.
It all sounds very overwhelming but make it your goal. You have to live it if you really want to do it.

I'm saying this because I've felt the same way for a long time. I've been studying it for years. How to live off the land. Navigating. Keeping yourself alive in a worst case scenario. Foraging. Trapping. When and where to set up camp.

Trapping rabbits will not keep you alive for very long. Foraging is the same way. In fact it can make you very sick, dehydrated, and even kill you.

Your best bet is to take a trip every month for a few days. Do it alone. Make sure you can rely on yourself. See what your body can handle without eating very much food because if you did this you will have periods of this. Especially if you don't bring a rifle with you. But then you need more ammo. You don't work so you can't pay for it. So you'll eventually have to assimilate back into society to some degree. You see where I'm getting at?

It is extremely difficult to be 100% self sustaining. You will most likely die earlier than you would living in a society.

Look, I love to read. It's something that too few people appreciate. You are going to die, likely horribly, if you have to rely on a book to tell you how to survive though. Too many plants and animals (especially insects) look very similar, and a book won't likely tell you how to distinguish them properly.

Also, one of my favorite things my grandma used to cook was wild poke salat. Really good stuff, except unless washed and para-boiled correctly, it's poisonous. Just because something is edible doesn't mean it is something you should just feel free to dig into.

I'd put mountain women like my grandma up against both groups there. My grandma grew up during the depression, on Sand Mountain, AL. Survival was largely about knowing your environment, and living off of it. Women her age are/were by no means useless, or squeamish about shit like modern women are.

I am that. My particular form of craziness, Schizotypal and avoidant personality disorders makes me crave human relationships, while at the same time making me avoid them out of irrational fear. My thoughts do get a bit bizarre and irrational during times when I allow myself to become as isolated as possible. If I could completely isolate myself, I inevitably would, and I'd be miserable the whole time.

Luckily that's not an easy thing to do. At the very least I have to go to work (I'm a machinist) and I have to make regular trips to the store, bank, etc. Plus I do have friends and family who care about me, and will come check up on me whenever I stop answering the phone for an extended period.
