He lost the popular by 3 million votes, so if it were a true democracy not still keeping outdated relics that don't even do what they're supposed to do (stop idiot-chosen demagogues) he would have lost.

Trump is a Russian tool. Clinton was shit. But like it or not, the next 4 years probably won't be that bad.

if usa only used the popular vote then California and new york would forever decide who becomes president.
specially California with them using illigals and carting them from vote ballot to vote ballot.

this is the reason that america uses the ec to decide a president, that way the intire country decides and not just California and new york

Britbong here. If you've ever visited America you'd know it's huge. And inevitably the political climate varies. The EC is designed to give fair representation of political climates rather than number of people, because political climate is what decides a favoured candidate. Trump vs Clinton is actually a perfect example: people living in luxury in California don't care for new infrastructure that Trump has promised, while the men in the poor southern states struggling to find work, even physical labour, want that more than anything else. They want to give Trump his chance to Make America Great Again because that's what he's promised them.

Wait, If the ec was implemented to help smaller areas have more say, then why is there a sliding scale based on population to determine the number of electorates?

I mean, california, new york, and Texas have about a fourth of the say still.

I could've sworn the electoral college was implemented because our founding fathers thought common people were too stupid to vote for themselves.
>>
>>719660000
By people protesting and shit they are proving democracy to being working.
If there was a vote and people protested and the protests were shut down, then that is not a democracy.

The beauty of a true democracy is that the power is in the people. Now, is the political side of the US laws a true democracy? No, it's not, it's more of a republic where the rich have more sway in government than the poor and the average worker. In a true democracy Trump would have not won, he would have lost.

>I could've sworn the electoral college was implemented because our founding fathers thought common people were too stupid to vote for themselves.
this is an oversimplification. the founders didn't anticipate the age of coherent unified parties that we have now. They expected it would be typical for each state or region to vote for a favourite son candiate and thus nobody would have a majority, leaving the electoral college to pick the best of them.

If the people were evenly distributed, tens of millions of Americans would be living in and have been raised in starkly different conditions and thus have very different political views, so I don't see what the point is in your hypothetical. Also, if the popular vote were all that mattered, both candidates would likely have campaigned differently, so again pointless to bring it up.

the best thing about trump being president is that its probably the best example there will ever be in playing the long game in espionage. forget the whining about lies and fakery pretty much every intelligence agency is in agreement that trumps rise to president is largely a result of russian interference. All those missiles, subs, tanks, etc and the US has been brought into line with the great bear by some very impressive work by the Russians. The funny thing is they've used the same tactics that failed in Russia to bend the US over and basically get it tied up in domestic introspective bullshit about muslims and immigration. A lot of people will be watching Trump closely during his first term but id be watching the Russians myself. in 5 years time the world is going to look very different

Historically, the EC had favored Republicans. It's controversial because you are handicapping the vote of individuals in high density areas for a few farmers in less populated states. Furthermore, the US has never had a popular vote for the Presidential election, so there is no way to know for sure what the actual impact would be on the minority who voted Republican. We know why it was created, but trusting solely on the OPINIONS of our founding fathers is not necessarily the best way forward.

This isn't it at all. One of the Founders, Alexander Hamilton, explains the purpose of the electoral college in The Federalist Papers #68. The reason it exists is that the Founders did not trust the people to directly elect a person who is "fit" to be President. As Hamilton explains, it's a measure to prevent foreign influence and prevent the people from falling for irrelevant populist bullshit. It has absolutely nothing to do with giving certain groups of voters more voting power.

>>719662726

The paraphrased version is that electors are actually the people who cast the vote for POTUS.

The people actually vote for the electors who then vote for the candidate they pledged to vote for. Basically making it look like

>Majority of people in Florida cast vote for candidate X
>Electors that have pledged to vote for candidate X beforehand and have been selected to represent their party in the electoral college are then the ones that are actually allowed to cast votes, generally giving that candidate Y amount of electoral votes (270 are needed to secure the presidency)

The electors that weren't picked by the party that inevitably won the state, just don't get to vote.

Granted, a lot of people like to bring up that electors don't need to vote based on what they pledged to vote for (also known as a faithless elector, Hillary Clinton had more of these than any other candidate in like a hundred years.) but generally speaking, electors vote based on who they pledged to vote for, because failing to do so generally puts them in hot water with their party, so it's not an issue, and as far as I know, election has ever been decided solely based on the votes faithless electors (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Also, many states have laws in place where faithless electors can be fined considerably for going against their pledged candidate.

Finally we come to the WHY of it all. As someone else said, it basically prevents the people in California and New York (both massively populous and pretty much entirely Democrat states that by themselves make a third of the entire Democratic vote) from basically deciding who is going to direct the country for the next 4 years, even though most of the country is vastly culturally different from those places.

I realize that was a bit long but that's as close to a tl;dr version as I could get without glazing over some of the more important bits.

Because, as stated, we're a federal republic. We're 50 States with a limited representative government. So, in the Electoral College system, the majority of the STATES decide. You might want to read the Bill of Rights...specifically the 10th Amendment:

>The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Serious question- Did they stop teaching all this?
>>
>>719670738
Worse, the vote of anti-intellectuals in rural areas actually counts for MORE due to an unintended side effect of the electoral college. The Founders clearly never meant for a vote in Wyoming to count the same as 4 votes in New York, but today it does.

The problem you are having is you havent defined politics. Maybe you mean political parties, I dont know. But the definition of politics itself is "the activities associated with the governance of a country or other area, especially the debate or conflict among individuals or parties having or hoping to achieve power." The word politics derives from the Greek "affairs of the citystate".
If you have a government, and anywhere you have people you have a government (named or not), you have politics.

People have the idea we're a democracy because we just spent half a century and trillions of dollars traipsing around the world blowing peoples heads off under the banner of "spreading democracy", when in fact what we have is a federal republic, completely insulating the country from democracy.

It's handy lip-service paid to rule by the people, while functioning as an aristocracy. ...which, funny enough, is exactly what the culture that invented democracy replaced it with immediately after inventing it, though, in their case, it was to insulate them from the input of the Idios, or "private people" not up to speed and engaged in the culture. If you wanted to be an ignorant farmer, that was fine, but you don't get to weigh in on what Athens should do.

We've taken the opposite tack, giving isolated farmers more of a vote than those most actively engaged in determining the direction of the nation.

Made sense in the 1700s, when this was an agrarian burg of educated landowners and ignorant drunks and outlaws, but hasn't held up well with the massive reversals in US cultures.

An idea can be as grand and noble as it wants, but if the majority of the people don't find it's working for them, it's only a matter of time before they replace it.

He wasn't democratically elected. He was elected by a system that gives people in certain rural areas 4 times the voting power of people in urban areas. He lost the popular (democratic) vote by a lot. He only became President because he won the weighted (electoral college) vote. Unfortunately for him, approval ratings are not weighted. I don't have to imagine it. I've seen it. Sociologists are studying the LHC specifically because nearly all of it is not structured whatsoever, and functions best in an ad-hoc anarchistic chaos. It seems to run against the grain of everything we know about the primitive human social mind, but, over many previous organizations requiring that much cooperation, they found this lack of traditional human hierarchical structure greater enables the free flow of information, increasing the rate and quality of discoveries and solutions to problems. This is also how certain space stations have functioned, and occasional antarctic research stations have functioned from time to time, between periods of asshole governments stepping in, exerting their influence and fucking everything up.

Too bad society isn't full of individuals as intelligent and committed to cooperation and pure research as, the most intelligent people on earth...
