The problem is that back in 08/09 these parts were massive upgrade to their predecessors just like every year but this curve has gotten less steep by the year to the point I can still get by with 8 years old hardware.

Pretty good to be honest. Deals with Fallout 4 like butter. Not the most demanding game but with mods, combined with the fact it was coded by retards, pretty impressed.

I think you can pick up two at £100 in the UK second hand. Pretty decent when you consider how much performance you get.

Anyway, as long as Nvidia prices are as they are, I won't be moving any time soon.

I don't understand the 6600K. You should have bought either Haswell-E or Broadwell-E, depending on when you built the thing (assuming you did). Even from a cost perspective, a 5820k would have been about as expensive and provide 2 more physical cores and 8 more threads. Beyond all that, you'd have had a metric ton more PCI-E lanes and better M.2 support, which come in handy for file servers (yes, SSDs are good for those).

It'd also have put you on the X99 platform, which will receive frequent upgrades/refreshes anyway.

My Asus P6T SE mobo died a few years ago. Otherwise, I'd still have rocked that i7 920 as well. For gaming, an overclocked 920 is still perfectly fine in almost any game. I used to play GTA V maxed out.
