I think guns are too easily available in the US and cause way more harm and death than protection. I think SMGs and automatics should be banned, the process to get one is easier than buying a car, and there really should be a background check/mental screening/class/cert one must get before they are able to get one.

Automatics are pretty much banned unless you can drop $20,000 on a rifle made back before 1980.

SMGs are only legal if they are semi automatic and have the standard 16" barrel. To get one that's the actual length of an SMG you have to get an SBR which enters Class III firearms land, which is a pain in the ASS.

There is a required background check for any Federal Firearms Dealer. The only way around this is purchasing from a private seller, and even in some states you have to transfer the firearm through an FFL, which performs the background check.
