Also general guitar thread, post your guitars and rate others.
>>
Bass players welcome
>>
yep, epiphone are good entry guitars. its quite an established trustworthy brand, and their whole gimmick is that their affordable
>>
what's your budget OP?
>>

Nigger tier guitar
>>
a cheap fender would do fine.
>>
>>715257407
About 200€,thats like 170$ or something like that
>>
>>715257812
it's nice and epiphone make decent guitars. my brother has a similar.

but as with anything price = quality.

but it's a good beginner guitar.

pic related is my fender stratocaster.
>>
Pretty much any guitar is fine for starting with - i play on 50 dollar pieces of shit to guitars of 5k euro, and to be brutally honest they feel not all that extremely different when set up well.

The AMPS that come with those starter sets are garbage though. And I don't mean that in a snobby way. I mean that it will prevent you from having a lot of fun while playing, and thus from picking up your guitar often enough to git gud. IMO look if you can find a second hand guitar amp from somewhere near you. Doesn't have to be amazing, but speaker size matters. Or just get one of the newer series Peavey Bandits, those are just fine for practice for a plethora of genres and can even keep up with a drummer if you want to jam with a friend.
>>
Hey OP, i have taught guitar for years and i usually steer beginners towards the fenders, they are typically easier to have set up action wise and you can always do upgrades to it if you decide to stick with playing, hope this helps
>>
>>715259305
yeah he could get a squier.
>>
>>715256504
Any guitar is good for that. now, if you're trying to not look like a newb, I wouldn't get the epiphone gibson wannabe. Just get a fender squire
>>
>>715258959
I would argue against price being equal to quality, higher end guitars you end up paying out the ass for a name, just like apple products.
>>
>>715259590
Would a squier affinity be good?
>>
>>715256504
A friend of mine had that guitar and it was awesome. It's very cheap and the fretboard is soft as butter, the only problem is that the balance is a bit uneven, if you strap the guitar and stand up, it will fall a bit to the neck side.
>>
>>715259710
Yeah but you could get the ibanez gio for the same price
>>

>>715259305
That's bullshit, a LP model is as easy as a strat, with the advantage that it has 22 frets, vs the strat's 21. Also, the default tremolo bridges are a serious piece of shit.

That being said, a friend of mine had a mexican strat that had the most beautiful sound I've ever heard from a guitar, it had a floyd rose II bridge, though.

Stratocasters are a good entry level guitar atleast it was to me mine still works really good to the point of I've used it at shows instead of my other guitar(not pictured) and there not too expensive depending on the model
>>
>>715256504
im sure the amp will sound like shit, but the guitar is fine to learn on im sure. just buy some better strings and picks
>>
>>715260055
We'll yeahhh Mexican strats are basicallly equal quality to American ones without the markup
>>
>>715260173
no they arent
mexican strats are trash
>>
>>715260173
Yeah, that's what I figured (I've never played an american one), that guitar was very cheap, not as cheap as a squire, but still way cheaper than an american one.
>>
Once you learn how to play, you're gonna need a guitar that looks the part for the music you wanna play. Look at the bands around, who uses fenders? Faggots. Who uses jacksons, ibanez? Ppl who are slightly less faggots and prob metal heads. There you go

Any guitar is a good entry level guitar.
My first guitar was a 100 dollar Squire Bullet I got back in 2002, still have it and it still works, even with a chipped fret.

Don't buy a super expensive one, for starters your budget should be around 150 dollars or less, so those kits are great.
>>
What's the most versatile entry level guitar?
>>
Look up rondomusic.com the agile and sx brands are great guitars for the price and made of actual wood instead of plywood.
>>
>>715256504
Yes but.... why buy new?

Get a four hundred dollar guitar for half price second hand - or 600 -

You do get what you pay for, but the glut of guitars on the market is such that really decent second hand is cheap too, and better value.
>>
Know what you want in life and make an informed decision and get a real instrument that you're gonna use for a while.

Be me. Freshman in high school. Wants to play guitar. Gets new guitar. Practices all day ever day like it was my baby. In 2 years. Be me. Can play for the love of God by Steve Vai from start to finish without missing a note. Parents pleased. Buys me fender strat.

Cheap guitars and cheap instruments as a whole suck. Don't buy them. Either play or don't play. Practicing on a shitty instrument isn't good.

Epiphone are all good, never played a bad one.

I brought an Epiphone acoustic because I already spent enough on my Gretsch

But yeah for beginner you are buying a nice easy to play guitar compared to some of the shit out there, amp is probably rubbish though
>>
>>715260957
This. As soon as Obama took office and the assault weapons ban was lifted pawn shops and the like switched from guitars to guns and it really dropped the value of second hand guitars. You'll pay out the ass for brand new but you can find whatever you want on the book face yard sales or in pawn shops.

That looks straight tho. The guitars aren't actually terrible but those little amps blow if you want to do anything besides strum in your bedroom.

Kinda this. But the other guy has a good point too.
>>
Also. I have a $1200 Jackson I found on Craigslist for $120 because he was Asian and had rich parents. There's no need to buy a cheap guitar because you suck NOW. In the future you aren't gonna suck and you're gonna need something good. Instruments don't get better over time.

>>
>>715260875
I started playing guitar again this year and went out and spent $1100 on an acoustic guitar which I don't play much. Am I retarded? Should I just sell it? I don't have a job so I used inheritance fund. I don't have much inspiration for music, it really comes and goes, sometimes I feel like playing and love the guitar, but in my mind I know what a foolish practice it is when you don't have the idea of joining bands.I think I would rather put my time into meditation than practicing guitar, as it's such a specific skill that you can't really carry to anything else, and music is very repetitive and boring on one instrument. I think in the end it doesn't really matter if I keep the guitar or not, but whether I use my time wisely with it, and don't get attached.
>>
>>715261263
OP.

Get the guitar, its a nice guitar for the price and youre getting brand spanking new. If you end up getting serious, spend more cash. Do not let these smug fucks tell you youre buying trash or you should pay more because you shouldnt. Fuck them, thats a good deal you see right there.
>>
>>715261263
Ah. Buy new Chinese or Japanese. That being said all cheap guitars, your op included, are made by Samick in Indonesia. The quality isn't the best but it's a good place to start. It'll hold intonation and stay in tire for thebmost part.

Get a better starter pack from a better company. Every other company isn't afraid to put their name on the head stock bc their brands are quality. Gibson is too, but setting up epiphone to be their second hand guitar company means they don't live up
>>
>>715261637
>>715260124
Like what brand is the P- copy/ what's the scale on the neck ? Is it thin or fat?
>>
>>715261052
Not being harsh. Just old and experienced

If the guitar is cheap and nasty (lets be honest the machine heads in one of these will be crap) playing will be harder and not as much fun

Get a ten year old Pacifica - really untrendy - for 100 and you the tuners alone are worth 60.

It will have a better neck, better pickups (these epiphany pickups are 5 dollar shit) and last til he goes pro and gets a real axe.

This cheap shit will be hard to play, discouraging, and discarded for a better model in a year if he does enjoy it - so it is throwing money away as second hand it will be worth nothing.

I started with cheap guitars, and was frustrated for years. Finally got a second hand Musicman when I was 18 - my playing took off.

Second hand, better value... until you afford a real one.
>>
>>715261407
I agree. I had an Epiphone Special before I could afford a real LP. Its a good one to learn on.
>>
>>715261407
This.
As long as it halfway holds a tune, its all you need for now. As far as you know, you will hate playing, you dont need to spend thousands of dollars to figure that part out.
My only suggestion would be to get an acoustic instead of an electric as a first. It will make you a better player in the long run. If you cant play it on an acoustic then you have no business playing it on an electric
>>
>>715259833
600 euro

worth every penny

them singlecoils get that very CRISP sound I like.

it's like you can hear the quality. eargasm indeed.
>>
>>715261190
fuck that is a beautiful drum set, i just really like the way it's set up. you could basically play any genre of music on it. the perfect arrangement of toms and symbols. bass player btw
>>
>>715256504
Anything is good for entry level. Anything. If it can be practiced with, it's perfect for a beginner. You're also probably deaf to many things yet, like string quality or slight off tunning. Also, Epiphone is a great brand. If any, if you're a total begginer, I would recommend starting with an acoustic or an spanish guitar. Acoustic and Classical don't forgive bad players, so you'll develop your ear faster.

Bassfag here, its fine for a starter. Your getting a feel for the instrument and seeing if guitar is for you. My first bass was a $150 Cort 4 string, and I loved that thing.
>>
>>715256504
you could do a lot better,

you could also do a little worse.

i'll assume you're somewhat internet savvy since you're on /b/ and recommend that you pirate/otherwise acquire some kind of amp modelling software and buy a cheep digital recording box instead of an amplifier and put the money saved into a better/difference guitar.

if you're really down with LP shape/feel there are better copies than an epi special for the money like an agile, vintage, jay turser or LTD. basically anything korean made is going to be solid.

my first guitar was a special II and on account of a warped neck (may or may not be common) I was hunting for my mexican strat (7 years later still playing it) before long.

Ok just read your difficulty with second hand - didn't mean to sound smug...

If you really can't get a decent second hand one, then this starter kit won't be bad, but to be honest the cheap fender kits are better than the Gibson/epiphone ones on balance.

Consider that at that price, you are paying for the amp as well, and that the shop makes 45% the wholesaler makes 100% and factory makes 30% markup, typically, plus cost of shipping from Far East. A guitar sold new in the U.K. For £200 costs $40.00 at the factory gate.

(I know because I used to be in the business - making handmade acoustics, and got offers for copies of Martin designs with my logo in all mahogany for $35 or spruce too for 40)

Your tuners cost a couple of dollars, the electrics the same.

Given that a decent set of Gotoh tuners costs 30 to 150 quid, you can tell those tuners are not high quality...

OP, if you have any iDevice, forget about the amp

You can get for around 15$ the most versatile guitar amp modeler app on the appstore(also good for bassists too)

It's called JamUp Pro and has add ons that you can purchase(you can buy amp models, stompboxes, EQ boards, delay pedals, etc...)

Basically, it enables you to create your whole signal chain, just like in real life

Keep your money for a great guitar and buy the iRig2 so you can plug it directly into your iDevice

Not only can you plug it on an amp or computer speakers, but you can bring it anywhere you want

If you want a cheap good amp then look for the Fender Mustang amp.

Thanks mang. It's not a super expensive set but not total garbage.

Before I put the little 10" oak snare in there, I had the two toms mounted slightly to the left and I was able to lay the 18" crash cymbal (which is kinda heavy) more flat where the 12" (middle size) tom is currently over the kick. I liked that a lot because it was fun to mess around on that 18" cymbal since it was right there.

Only problem is then it spreads the toms apart and it becomes a bit of a jump from the top two toms to the floor tom. I like having them close to roll across them and play around with everything being close.

Whenever I come across a drum kit that doesn't really get used, they always have the toms set up all high and spread apart and mounted at like a 45deg+ angle and it pisses me off. I like having it all set a little lower and flat and it seems to make more finesse rolls and rim shots more easy.

Pic related is the setup I always have to move a bunch of shit around when I see something like that.

Beware tho, the guitar is not setup at all out of the box, so you want to either learn how to, or take it to someone who can do this for you. I recommend learning it yourself, It's not that difficult.

Don't listen to any of these clowns.

I am a guitar teacher and have been playing for over a decade.

The first guitar I ever bought, that STILL works is my epiphone les paul special II. It will cost around 150-200 dollars. I can't imagine a more durable guitar at that price. I've seen many guitars in my time, and that is one of the only ones that has not eventually had truss rod issues.

I made a guitar a few years ago, got really into it, it was a thru neck guitar with a mahogany and birch ply neck and a British walnut body.

Really fun and plays nice but I realise I enjoyed makIng things way more than playing instruments.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but that is not the difference. The difference is the trem block, and it makes a huge difference. If you get a mim strat and upgrade the block, then you're in the same league, depending on the model/electronics.

Been playing for 10 years. In my current setup I play a Gibson LP. Drummerfag here.

It's kinda nice you can actually buy a halfway decent guitar pack for so cheap like the Squire Strats or I think my lil bro got one of those Ibanez beginner ones.

Sometimes with music, you don't want to buy complete shit when you are starting because you are more likely to just toss it aside and give up. And with drums, even a beginner setup from a reputable company will still run $1000. If you try and buy the $300 Costco kit, it will be difficult to take it seriously.

Then it really sucks when you spend $1500 on a kit and lose interest and it gets shuffled around the garage for years until it is complete trash. Upside is you can find used beginner-intermediate stuff on CL for cheap. Plus unlike guitars, it is difficult to have a collection of 8 drum kits in your apartment so when people upgrade they will sell the older kits.

>>715271485

Except instruments aren't cars. You drive a car for transportation. Anything else is purely for status unless you're some sort of gear head or racer. Both things that require time and effort to learn and get into. Just like music. You're not going to buy a porche as your first car, so your argument doesn't line up with the situation presented.
Doesn't really matter as most of this shit he plays will suck at first.

I don't think this applies to acoustics. Going for a comfy acoustic that sounds right to you but is still reasonable I think is worth it. I spent $1100 on mine, and it's the only acoustic i'll ever need.

but for electric, I took the first nice sounding one used that I could find. Spent $400, and got a simple tube amp, and that's all I'll spend for that
