man i miss the CkY days
>>
>>2372312
I was a teen during the heydays of Jackass (so a little after the original cky). To me it seems like yesterday. I don't really miss it, but I get nostalgic over it too sometimes. I think skateboarding is much more accepting nowadays.
>>
I used to skate from 10-15 years old.

A couple of weeks ago I decided I wanted to get back into it so I picked up a second hand board.

I'm 25 now so after 10 years of not skating I thought it would take ages to get used to it again... but i'm almost as good I was at 15!

Not that I was any good back then anyway. I can only do basic shit like ollies/fakie ollies, 180s and manuals.

Keen to go to local skate parks and just have fun :)

you're a hero anon.

so, guys, I sprained my ankle skating about 2 weeks ago, I can still walk fine and everything but it hurts if push against my ankle too much like inward. Should I wait a little longer to skate, or am I good? I can afford to wait because Nyc is covered in snow, but I've been dying to skate afterschool.

Is wait if I were you. I rolled my ankle back in September and I couldn't skate for 6 weeks. After that long I was so sick of not skating that I just said fuck it and started again. It was pretty painful and I'd twang my ankle every time I skated. Because I didn't let it rest for a few more weeks I ended up still limping in January. Only recently has my ankle properly healed.

just threw it away or give it to some little kid man, DON'T RIDE IT! everybody makes mistakes but if you want to get into skating just spend the cash and pick up a proper set up.
>>
>>2374469
just use it to learn to balance and practice flat ground tricks. eventually you'll want to pick up something new. don't get a complete setup but buy the parts individually.

you'll want to eventually invest in a board from baker, element, flip, girl, birdhouse etc.
>>
>>2374949
It really isn't a bad brand
Definitely better than the Walmart and toys r us shit
If you replace the bearings it's just as good as a zumeiz complete
>>
>>2374964

you're probably right. it's nothing to stress over considering its a first deck and given the price he has nothing to really stress over
>>
What's your opinion on fat skaters?
I found my brothers old skateboard and want to try skateboarding. The issue is I'm 290lbs @ 6'3. I'm in the process of losing weight and thought that skateboarding might help me.
This set has 8" Plan B deck, Venture trucks, some generic wheels (hard and small) and independent bearings if it matters.

Sooooo, can I do it without shame, or should I go to the park at night and pray that I wont meet skaters or hobos?
>>
>>2375244
>>2375244
keep at losing the weight and keep at skating. it takes a lot of energy to skate and more exercise takes place than realised.

don't worry about it. just get into it, have fun and do your best. you'll be surprised
>>
>>2375244
>>2375287

also check this guy out

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4qagwtthNI

if he can do it you can do it
>>
>>2375244
Skating is good cardio and is really good at building leg muscle. Just go to the park, fuck even just set out a path you want to ride and do that once a night. When I was starting off I just got really good at balancing and going fast and did a set out path that looped around my neighbourhood. It might be rocky the first couple times but you'll learn how to get over cracks in the sidewalk maneuver around things then when you feel comfortable go on to learning tricks. You're guaranteed to lose at least 5-10 pounds a month if you really go for it and plus if you're working out you should be able to shred that weight.

As for what people will think of you, nobody will really care. I was self conscious my first few times going to the skate park but once you realize everyone there is just there to have fun and learn some new stuff you'll stop caring less about what people think. Nobody is good straight off the bat and people will be more likely to help you progress and tell you what you're doing wrong if you get talking to some people there who skate. Usually when I go at night there's nobody there, but typically the people you meet at night are also people just like you. Just get out there and do it and have fun.

Good luck on the weight loss.

>>
>>2376258
eeh if it gets you skating again who cares, arron kyro is a cunt though
>>
>>2376264
How is a he a cunt? Most of the videos are of him teaching people how to skate. He's probably one of the only positive male role models in these kids' lives. I think he's dope.
>>
>>2376270
I'm guessing you've only watched a handful of their videos? Either that or you are actually Arron Kyro
>>
>>2376283
lol I'm not Arron Kyro
I just posted my GIRL board I bought on skate warehouse for 60 bucks
I've watched hours and hours of the videos
they've helped me
if I had those videos when I was 15 I would have been a way better skater
>>
>>2376270
>He's probably one of the only positive male role models in these kids' lives

ok that's called a biased assumption
>>
>>2376344
maybe so
but it's one way I see him in a positive light
they only negative thing I hear about him is that he's into scientology and people think he's a dweeb
i like that he's a dweeb
i think it works well for the kids
>>
https://youtu.be/L9_P6APjBkI?t=299

there's a bunch of videos of him pushing people to do better
I think it's awesome
tons of these kids are fresh off the boat mexicans
i grew up around some people like that from california
skateboarding kept them grounded
>>
>>2376356
you ;re supposed to learn on your own, that's the beauty of it. If you want advice, ask it yourself, and don't go arbitrarily giving tips to people.
Yes, he is a genuinely good guy and he likes skateboarding and, as is always the case, the industry insiders hate that they have to share the market with a company that hasn't produced a full length video and circumvents official advertising ways, but I am generally put off by the whole "good influence" vibes. He is lukewarm, their brand lacks attitude. And don't get me started on the shrock videos...
>>
>>2376436
You're supposed to have fun.

When I grew up learning how to skate I did it every day with my friends. We taught each other tricks all the time and we also skated by ourselves on our own time. We were always happy to take advice from better skaters. We had fun. That's enough. Stop being a hater.
>>
>>2376456
>You're supposed to have fun.

that was my point
learning is half the fun, when you conquer the trick
>>
>>2376543
Skate videos aren't going to do it for you.
People teaching you to skate aren't going to do it for you.
I've had friends spend hours helping me land a trick and giving me tons of tips.
Didn't take away from my own style one bit.
We would have eaten up those Braille videos had we had them.
We grew up in the middle of nowhere with no skate spots so ANY time we got to be around more experience skaters we soaked up every little bit we could.
>>

hey man, I 'm not a hater, I 'm going to say it again, shrock's is one of those youtube channels with the clickbaity titles, where they show you ten seconds of footage and five and a half self-indulging blahblahblah, he's breaking my balls. And he's not even a bad skater, why can't he post more skateboarding if he wants to promote??? goddamn, motherfucker.
I like Aaron better for that reason, but it's just too clean of a vibe, I am not a little child.I really don't hate him, but I am indifferent.

Thing with Spencer is, he is less explanation more cool. Not a bad thing but still he could explain a lil bit more.
>>
>>2382381
fuck yeah!
>>
>>2382819
I agree but spencer taught me how to ollie, kickflip and shuv. The reason he doesn't explain as much is because he wants the person watching to know the basics and figure out the rest for themselves. When you look at a channel like braille, the over-explanation actually leaves a gap in the knowledge of the person learning, because by breaking it down into individual tiny steps it restricts the viewer from trying something differently.

Hi skaters,

I want to watch nyjah skating the 34 rail he did on the face melters show produced by this etn company shit.

It's paying though. Can't find it for free anywhere.

He did a back 5-0 and possibly a smith from what I heard, I'd love to see it.

If any of you guys have a link or a vid, that would be nice.

On a side note, I think the days of free SLS are gone, it's all gonna be paying now unless we weasle our way into watching it for free.

The quote its based on is a defense of free speech. Yet you post it whenever someone expresses their distaste for mongo pushing. You clearly haven't thought this through. For example:
>but I will defend your right to have fun
Nobody is trying to prevent them from being able to.

So when someone says that mongo pushing is less practical or looks worse. And you come along and post that image go "they have the right to push mongo even if you don't like it", you're not really arguing against what they are saying.
>>
>>2388098
>Nobody is trying to prevent them from being able to.

then why are they "advising" them not to push mongo? What other reason could someone have to tell you this?
>>
>>2388129
Telling someone you think its stupid isn't the same as trying to take away their right to do it. This really isn't that difficult a concept.

Today was my second day skating in years.
My legs were super sore from yesterday so I didn't feel like skating as much. I'm really sore and stiff.
I'm just worried about progressing steadily.
I can't really land any of my flip tricks while moving and can barely olly.
I'm starting to get used to rolling around fast though but I want to be able to olly onto ledges effortlessly.
How fast should I be expecting to progress?
I don't want to stagnate. I want to get fucking good.
>>

>How fast should I be expecting to progress?
>I don't want to stagnate. I want to get fucking good.

Honestly, don't worry about your speed of progress, or the idea of stagnation. Those ideas are just going to bring you down. Focus on the latter part, getting fucking good. Don't worry about not getting something down quickly since you're (presumably) relearning how to skate.

not a cliche. To reach the point where you have to tell somebody i.e. go out of your way to express your personal attitude/taste juxtaposed to someone else's, that means that you are trying to prevent them from doing it, at a minimal level. Otherwise, what's the point of telling it?
>>
>>2388873

>>2389660
>keep your thoughts to yourself next time, nobody's interested in what you think.
>not a cliche
Pick one.

>go out of your way
Are you serious dude? Its a post on an imageboard where we discuss our opinions on skating, how am I going out of my way anymore than anyone else here?

>that means that you are trying to prevent them from doing it, at a minimal level
But I'm not trying to take away their right to do it. I don't understand how you can't comprehend this.

For example, lets say I was father and told my child I don't think they should go to a party. But otherwise left the choice to them. I wouldn't be taking away their right to do it, I'd be advising against it.

Now lets say instead of just telling them I don't think they should go. I tell them they cannot go under penalty of me kicking them out of home. That would be me trying to take away their right to go.

Likewise me just telling a kid mongo pushing looks silly and isn't as functional as regular pushing isn't me trying to take away anyone's rights. But if I threatened to hit them for continuing to do so, then its me trying to take away their rights and then and only then does it become a problem.

>Otherwise, what's the point of telling it?
So you're opposed to discussion?

Also on a side note, the original quote you based that on is on my side with this.

being against mongo is accepted as the norm. Saying "fuck it, I 'll push mongo regardless" is the minority. So when you GO OUT OF YOUR WAY to tell someone not to push mongo because YOU don't like it and don't agree with that, you have the power of the majority behind you and you are trying to influence him, there's no other reason behind sharing your opinion with someone who pushes mongo. I wasn't talking about 4chan, I was talking about real life, don't say to people who didn't initiate any conversation with you that mongo is a bad habit.

And what I said about the reddit convo was because it was related to the accepted norms. If you can't understand how, then that's your problem.

And mongo is absolutely not a practical handicap, it's just the aesthetic and style that gave it its bad rep.

But its not related to our conversation.

>And mongo is absolutely not a practical handicap, it's just the aesthetic and style that gave it its bad rep.
Yes it is, as someone who started out pushing mongo and thought I was good at it. Until I realized how fucking awful it looked and forced myself to change. I can assure you it gives you far worse board control.

So basically, look I know you think you're challenging school yard bully shit. And maybe to a degree you are. But not in this case, and encouraging mongo pushing really isn't helping anyone.

>again, it's your problem.
Not really dude.

>then you go on to say
Yes it looking shit was the catalyst which made me try pushing regularly. But that doesn't change that after I got used to it, I had far better board control because of it. I'm not sure what point you think you're making against that.

>switch mongo and OP.
Pushing switch regular gives better board control. Switch mongo being more socially accepted than regular mongo doesn't change this. Many skaters are just too lazy to fix their switch pushing.

And I'm not denying its possible to skate well and push mongo. But mongo pushing still gives worse board control.

>I am a mongo crusader. Yield under my debating skills.
You're really not making a compelling argument at all though.

>>2395983
Great contribution to the thread, you shitposting tard.

>>2396162
We're throwing arguments at each other, that's how you discuss differing opinions.
>>
>>2395932
The one other thing I forgot to readdress is why you don't think the quote is also a defense of me advising against pushing mongo.

As from my perspective the original quote was a defense of free speech, and as long as the speech didn't try to impede on anyone rights its fine from that point of view. And of course that primarily defends unpopular opinions, as they are the main opinions which other would try to silenced. So to a small degree I get why you're talking about the majority opinion.

But the thing is the quote still defends any speech, free speech is about letting everyone voice their opinion. So it defends me expressing that I think mongo looks stupid and is less functional, too.

So what I'm asking is where do you think it doesn't agree with me? As I have stated a few times, I'm giving what I think to be useful advice not trying to force anyone to stop pushing mongo against their will. I don't get how I'm somehow trying to take away their right to it. Please explain to me how, because your past arguments don't seem to get your point across.
>>
>>2396508
having your opinions is one thing and it's good to have an opinion. And you are right, free speech is for everyone.
The thing here is that e.g. I don't like 360 flips. I think they are mundane and viewed as a stepping stone. Just out of spite, I won't do them. You may think I am missing out, you may be even right, if I did them maybe I would feel good and it would look awesome.

But I 've seen people actually going to little kids and telling them to not push mongo.

To me skateboarding is a toy, it's there to have fun and learning is half the fun. We can't all be in one discipline and have the same style. How would you feel if you were with ten dudes at the same spot, trying the same line? It's not practice, it's skateboarding.

And because there is oftentimes a big gathering of skaters in a spot, to start arguing over who is good or what tricks shouldn't be learned, is a petty reason to ruin the vibes. As long as we have fun, we will all be satisfied and get along. Skateboarding is almost persecuted in decent street spots, imagine if you would have to think on top of that "oh, THOSE guys are here". We might as well give it up.
>>
>>2371964

>>
>>2396525
>But I 've seen people actually going to little kids and telling them to not push mongo.
But again that's not what I'm doing and I don't think anyone on this board is doing. So I think posting that image on this board when someone says mongo looks shit or whatever, is a bit a silly.

>To me skateboarding is a toy, it's there to have fun and learning is half the fun. We can't all be in one discipline and have the same style. How would you feel if you were with ten dudes at the same spot, trying the same line? It's not practice, it's skateboarding.
I don't think we need mongo pushing to have varying styles and I think you're straying from the topic a bit.

The existence of tryhard kooks and them being lame isn't really what I'm arguing against here. I just don't think that image's wording generally works in the context of this board.
>>
>>2396525
Also, I don't think any reasonable person. Even if they will tell kids not push mongo in public or whatever, genuinely wants to take away their right to push mongo. How I'm seeing it they are just trying to advise the kids to have better style etc, and maybe are a bit annoying in how they do it. But I still the wording of that quote doesn't really work.
>>
>>2396593
>I think you're straying from the topic a bit.

if I do, it's because in my mind there is correlation of the two, people who criticise mongo and are, as you put so well, tryhard kooks.

the point of the image is to state that there is no right or wrong in skateboarding.
>>
>>2396609
>people who criticise mongo and are, as you put so well, tryhard kooks.
I disagree entirely. Criticizing mongo doesn't necessarily make you a tryhard kook at all. Someone actually gets mad and yells at some kid for pushing mongo, sure they're a cunt.

But say me coming onto this imageboard, seeing some beginner ask if pushing mongo is a bad idea. And then as a person with both experience defending and pushing mongo, and later realizing mongo really does not only look worse, but also gives worse board control. I give them advice from my experiences.

I don't see that as being a kook at all.

>the point of the image is to state that there is no right or wrong in skateboarding.
That doesn't mean we shouldn't discuss our opinions on what looks good, or what techniques give you better control/makes tricks look better.

America's laws on free speech to my understanding don't defend calls to immediate violence. But defend most everything else, which was kinda my point the whole time.

Calling everyone a commie for no real reason is on the same level as antifa calling everyone a nazi.

Why?

I guess a lot of people at work view skating as childish and degenerate.

yo sorry for the shit tier question I'm sure similar questions have been asked a lot before but hey

I've not skated since I was 14 but now that I'm at university I'm starting up again.
Problem is, I've essentially lost all my confidence. What's the best way to build it back up? I'm somehow way less brave than pre-puberty me

Also what the fuck are fury trucks apparently when I built this board in 2010 I was convinced they were the best but I've not heard shit about them since I got back into it

In return have a pic of my board which 14 year old me was convinced is the prettiest thing in the world
>>
>>2402183
I think I've go some shit I could wear with them
>>
>>2402369
The best way to gain confidence is to just skate, also trucks don't matter too much for begginers, just skate them until they fucked

>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5U3fdRzONU

How much do I need to skate to be able to do this stuff? :(

I've been skating for a year and a half and all I can do is ollies, and very occasionally i land 180, pop shuv it, and the one in a million kickflip

i skate every day to university and back, but i don't often have time to practice tricks

Just have fun mate, don't matter what tricks you can do
>>
>>2405576
>telling me how to have fun
i wanna do tricks bro
>>
>>2405579
Practice better by correcting every mistake or changing something until you learn the trick, then keep doing the trick until you have it every try
>>
>>2405512
If you make the time to actually practice tricks it should come fast, especially since you'll already be comfortable on your board. Just remember to use your brain and think about how your mistakes and bails happen.

Well they weren't the bumps ones, they were the ones with horizontal lines which are a lot worse

Drop in a roll in? like a smooth roll in without coping? dropping into a bank or roll in is fucked... it may look easier but it's harder than just dropping in normally IMO. you start going forward before your wheels even touch the ground, just drop in on something small and work your way up my dude.

>>2409717
I feel this, my local park was built by people that know nothing about skating. There's a 5 foot quarter there that has at least 2 feet of vert then goes straight into grass
>>
>>2409726
Biggest city in my area built 3 skateparks and I feel like every single one of them was built so people who asked for one would fuck off.
They are made of grainy concrete which stays on your hand when you run your hand on it. It's been only 2 years and its already full of holes and almost every bank is unusable.
People who buukt it had no idea what to do.
On the other hand the city that is 5x smaller if not more asked people how skatepark should look, what they want and employeed the company that builds primarily skateparks for a living.
It's been 3 years and Its mint. Pic rel
>>
>>2409726
My park has a combo bank rail and hubba which goes upwards in both directions meaning the rail and hubba are impossible to do anything on, a flat bank with no room to push off on, one lone quarter facing towards the hubba meaning you'll never get enough speed to reach the coping.

The only good thing is the semi-decent mini ramp, but it was made of two concrete quarters on each side cemented together. The cement has been cracked away since I was like 7 so there's a huge unavoidable gap that stops your board dead.

It's really weird because other towns in my area have great parks, all built by the same company. wheelscape. The reason mine is so shit I have no clue.
>>
>>2408798
Is it true that if I don't have those rough scratches on the back of my deck presumably from grinding, I look like a faggot holding my board?
