is /asp/ kill? it's all wrestling now

what width deck should I get. last time I bought a deck, there was pretty much no choice in width, and now it's almost too much choice. I'm 6'1" and have 9.5 shoe size in murican units.

what are some durable skateshoes? what is the most kickflip/griptape resistant material for uppers?
>>
>>1424039
The width of your board is all personal preference, I have size 9 feet and skate a 8.38 deck. While other might have a 9 inch foot and skate a 7.75 deck.
Your local shop should allow you to stand on a few boards so you can figure out what best for you. As for shoes, I think the Etnies Marana XT are the most durable skate shoe on the market.

Watched lords of the dogtown today, really liked it but had never heard of those guys, and it seems th movie isn't that accurate.
I've seen small skateboards like those that the guys had in the begginin g of the movie in skate shops, are they nice to ride? Gf wants to start riding and doesnt care about tricks so I figured out i'd get one.

Yea buy them they seem fun

Neversoft made the Tony hawk games so it might have been one of those

After like 4 sessions where i learned nothing new i had a breakthrough. I learned
>50-50's
>boardslides on flatbars
>fakie bigspins
>heelflips
>proper ollies off high stuff/stairs
Also i landed a tre flip "accidentaly", and my nollie heelflips actually spin well enough to land them soon.
>>
>>1425201
pretty cool bag of tricks there

How did you do 3 flip by accident failed 360 shove?
>>
>>1425250
I was just throwing them around and landing on with just front foot, then i half ass committed and landed one. Couldn't land another one tho.
>>
>>1425322
They are pretty easy just 360 shove and give it a lil flip with your front foot. Most common mistake people do is they don't scoop enough so the board flies away from them

>surprising myself, holding it for longer than I expected
>wheel hits a piece of wood I didn't see
>fly off the board
>land and roll out with only a scrape on my leg/palms

This got me thinking. What's a good way to practice falling? Have any of you guys practiced before or has falling safely just come to you over the years?
>>
>>1425649
i've been skating for a while and still don't know how to fall safely. the other day i was riding home in the dark and hit a crack; i scraped my arm and the back of my hand. not so bad, but it may leave scars. i tend to skate parks more so when i do fall, i'll usually get bruises rather than scrapes, which still sucks

AEEEE IRMAO FOI ASSALTADO QUANTAS VEZES ESSE ANO????? EU NENHUMA UHEAUHEUAH
>>
>>1425649
It just takes a few hundred falls before you really get it. If you start when you're young and get the hang of it your body bounces back. Get on that shit.
But really just roll as much as possible. If you feel any momentum do not resist. Don't go ragdoll but just let it happen.
But if you're bombing hills, idk man. Just suit up with the classic windbreaker and try to slide without fucking yourself up too bad.

Not really, the board is so much bigger it controls more like standing up in a canoe than a skate deck. You also need aloooot of upper body strength. Not just for paddling but for keeping the board down when going to stand up. But its fun and you should learn

Making a skating music list, most of the songs are from cd's I have and I ripped them in WAV so highest quality I think.
Where can I share this with you guys? That's if anyone's interested, or just for input/opinions on what to add.
>>
For u guys who want high quality music (better than 320kbs) what.cd is the best place. Pretty much every dong that has existed avaible to be torrented in cd quality. You need an invite, or you need to pass a test related to the site rules in order to enter.

buncha people have said this but i think the main thing with 180s is making sure to wind ur shoulder the other way a bit before the ollie and time the turning of your shoulders, legs, board to happen right after you're in the air

i still suck at bs 180s tho so anyone got tips on foot positioning for them? or just any advice on front shuvs? man ive landed a few but all sketchy as hell and inconsistent
>>
>>1430919
nah dude pretty sure theres no proof that ice helps with anything other than swelling and temporary pain relief, whereas there's a bunch of proof that it cause nerve dmg and complications if used improperly

>>
>>1431096
Idk if you are doing this already/if it will help you, but in fs popshoves put your backfoot far back in middle of the tail. It makes it easier to spin it under you instead of spinning it behind you, and not having to jump behind so much to land it. Try to use your front foot as well in the trick, and jump slightly behind.

Just make the best out of that and when you got enough cash, buy yourself a complete.
$120-140 is enough for a good setup.
>>
>>1431513
After the learning the ollie, basic 180's and shuvs are easy to learn. Flip tricks are a pain tho
>>
>>1431513
Ollie is the hardest trick to learn. Then comes kickflip, and from then on you'll be landing tricks quicker and quicker.
>>
>>1431502
Honestly, if you have money i would find a good deal on a complete. That thing probably barely rolls, which takes a lot of the fun away. Also the shape (flat on the sides) is going to be a pain if you have any intentions on learning tricks. Skateboarding on good equipment makes it easier, and more fun. The board will probably break after you lay your weight on it anyways, those things are made from cardboard pretty much lol.
>>
>>1431513
They do, you gain board control when you skate, and learning basic tricks like ollies, 180's and shuvits aren't that hard once you are comfortable on the board. You can look for basic tutorials on youtube for foot placement, and ways to practise them without committing fully. After those it's going to be slightly harder as you need to learn flicking flip tricks, also it takes a lot of commitment to keep flip tricks under you at first.

You have to actually jump backwards a bit to do fs shuvs. Put the ball of your back foot into the heel side of the tail , so like more than half of the back of your foot is hanging off. You have to really use that back foot from this position to push into the tail and push it forward for the fs shuv spin. Since you have to push it so much you'll need to jump backward a bit to catch it. At first you might catch it at 90 and then pivot it out.

For bs 180s it helps to learn how to just do powerslide bs 180 first. Then once youre good at that, just add a pop to it. Putting your toes in the toeside pocket can help but not as much as learning the spin by powersliding them first.
>>
>>1431198
>>1431717
ive definitely heard and have worked on jumping a bit backwards
tried a handful today even though im sore and got rolled ankles blah blah but definitely got better results putting my foot centered on the board but on the very back of the tail
definitely didnt have to jump as far back but the only thing was if i fucked up the scoop i just got a completely rocket ollie into my crotch

as a beginner, I disagree with the other posters

I got the ollie down after a couple hours, but it has been 2 weeks of skating every day and I have landed 1 kickflip, 1 pop shuvit, and 3 backside 180s. I try for over an hour at a time and cannot land anything consistently. I have tried just focusing on one trick for days and I never improve, the times I have landed things are just luck I guess. Really slow to learn anything else
>>
>>1431924
180's and fakie tricks are a good next step.

>>1432094
You have to actually think what is going wrong, and try to correct it. Throwing a ball 50 times in the water won't make it go over the river. I know it can be quite hard, when you don't know what is going wrong. Try to videotape yourself and look some slow-mo videos of said trick from youtube. Compare what is different and try to figure out what you are doing wrong.
>>
>>1431926
Btw, post a clip here if you want some help. If there is something obviously wrong it's really easy to point it out. Usually its just not committing tho.
>>
>>1431697

Posted this in it's own thread but it's not getting much attention so I'm gonna try here:

"I'm 24 years old and I bought a skateboard last week for the first time in about a decade. My ollies were rusty as fuck but I've managed to go from landing none at all to landing maybe 1 in 10 attempts at an ollie. My balance also really sucked at first and I fell down hard in the first 2 minutes of getting on the board and really hurt my hip, but after about a week or so it feels better now.

My question is; what is a good route of progression for a new skater? I'm going to continue practising my ollies and spending some time going back and forth in the quarter pipe to help my balance, but where do I go from here? When I skated as a kid I could never do more than an ollie, so I'm not sure where to go next.

Do I try and practice a board slide, or maybe try and practice some of the easier and more simple flip tricks? (And which tricks would that be?)"
>>
>>1432179
Try pop shuvits FS and BS 180s
>>
>>1432179

And as a side question: is 24 a late age to be starting skating? It seems that most people have been skating since they were kids.
>>
>>1432179
Find a trick that you think looks cool. Practise that trick.

There is no natural progression through skateboarding. There are beginner tricks that are the easiest so you'll more likely learn those at the beginning, but you don't have to follow any route.

Hey guys I need some tips on kickflips. I've been trying for a while now, and I seem to be running into a few major problems. Firstly, I cannot consistently get quality flicks. About 1 in 5 times I will get a quality flip. The rest of the time I either under rotate, or kick it out in front of me.

>Will this just take a ton of time?

And secondly, in the event that I get a great flick, and I pull up my feet high enough, I will feel my feet make contact with the board but it just ends up flying away after that. I have a very hard time catching in air and landing, the board escapes me if my feet touch it.

As a side note I also often stop the rotation by not jumping high enough. I am assuming that I should just be jumping higher, putting more energy into the trick.

Does anyone have any advice?
>>
>>1433354

Try waiting until your front foot gets caught in the pocket right at the heelside nose of the board, it'll let your body catch up to the board and stay directly overtop of it better, and if you wait until then to give it the flick of your foot you'll get a perfect flick everytime. You'll be able to feel as your front foot gets caught there for a split second

Alright so when I was like 11 I used to rollerblade, pretty good at it but once I went yolo(seriously, as a kid compared to now I didnt think of dangers or consequences, its amazing to look into it) and just went off a downhill, I went so fast and I didnt know to properly brake so I hit a wall and broke my two wrists

Now I dont wanna do the same mistake so I was wondering, how do I properly slow down in my skate when going at average-fast/bigger speeds?
I know how to bail out/what I do when I'm goin g fast and need to stop or when I go to the slower side I just put my back foot in the ground on the side of the board and let it slow down.

I wanna cruise around town but I dont want to be bailing out when things gain speed, can hit a person/car/whatever and I look like a retard
>>
>>1433600
Powerslides are probably the best and funnest way, but it might take some time to do them comftorably and long enough to lose speed. You can just kind of put your leg down and brake with it, works fine.
>>
>>1433618

cool I'll try this, thank you. So the flick itself is a compound movement? A diagonal dragging of the foot and then a flick right at the end?

I wasn't wearing any sort of gear, my backpack took alot of the impact hence the exploding water bottle, along with my back, knees and elbows
>>

Yep you definitely want to be sliding, then flicking, two separate things. If you try to do it all at once you'll end up just flinging the board. Watch clips of good kickflips in slowmo or frame by frame and you'll be able to see how they wait till the moment their toebox is locked in the pocket before flicking. You'll be able to feel it get locked in the pocket after awhile too

I'm not even trolling, like I somewhat enjoy them, but the format (lots of waiting between runs/short run time) & the general tiny size of the course makes it difficult to ever sit through a whole one and when I do I'm always just glad its over at the end. I feel lame saying this but even the x-games is a better package... Huge outdoor courses, variety of shots (those overhead cams they use) to fill the downtime (streetleague never even shows the crowd....!?), almost no waiting between runs once the competition starts. Idk. I want to like streetleague but its hard and what is this, their 5th year or something?

I know what my body is supposed to be doing and i can get a good pop but i just cant level the board out no matter how i approach it. it just kind of rocket pops and i land in a manual. I have been trying to learn just an ollie for about 6 months of consistent weeekend time ( about 8 hours each weekend skating and practicing)
what do
>>
>>1436262
seems like you have a mental problem, and somewhat physical, just keep practicing, correct yourself where you are wrong, watch the tutorials and do not be afraid of the board, seriously. The whole 'mental' thing I referred to earlier could possibly just be somewhere deep inside your subconscious and is sending signals to your conscious mind preventing you from landing the trick. I'm not sure if it's that deep for you or not, but if you even have ANY slight, remote fear, it could be screwing with your head. Oh yea, and don't get pissed off, it's always hard to learn when you're frustrated, smoke a cig, listen to music, chill your mind out.

Keep your front foot over the board for the whole rotation, that way it cant primo. Also don't pop them at all, just shove them as it's easier to learn that way. You can just start off like you normally would, and start spinning the board, then land on with only your front foot, that way you don't have to commit until you get it consistently spinning the full rotation.

His friend was the one who wanted them to go riding........

Anyway his friend was a Bryan Herman clone and would've piled out onto LE just like duncombe tancowny and the rest of that generation. Truth hurts but its still the truth. Better to burn out than just fade away, you know? Rest in peace and all that, but let's be real.

I didn't actually mean that, just replying bait to bait. You are saying that it was a good thing he died? I don't understand what u mean.

Sorry, forgot about the thread. It's 7.5 and comfy (because it's all I have skated on). But my friend says I should probably get an 8, and even that feels too small for him (he's one shoe size bigger than me). Another thing is that narrow decks are cheaper (discounted) at my local skate shop.

if the actual hanger is bent just get new trucks if it bother you that much, but your bushing could just be deformed in which case you could try replacing them

Sort of, it made him a legend rather than another rail dude who would've been forgotten and dropped from flip in a year or two when they dropped the whole team anyway

their riding seems like little kids' riding to me. They can do the technical stuff, but it seems like they are too small for their boards. Or something. Like theyre riding a skateboard and doing tricks, rather than skateboarding. Ya know?

I think he'd prefer having fun living life rather than being a "legend", who knows. I find building a status for yourself pretty pointless when you are lying 6ft deep in ground.

Is there a certain level of skill expected of people who go to skateparks? Is there really any point in me going to one if all I can do is ollie and 180?

Knowing how to ollie is enough, most people won't even pay attention to you unless you make a fool out of yourself.
>>
big guy here with that silly skate deck. Tried to push normal today, front foot on board, pushing with back. Busted my ass twice, still know how to fall at least...

but when I went back to pushing mongo it was smooth as shit and I could actually stay on my board, even busted quite a few ollies. What the fuck am I doing wrong?

just practice pushing regular for like 1-2 days
>>
>>1439397
Muscle memory. You are unlearning habits. It was similar when i was trying to learn how to ridr switch comfortably. I felt like it was my first week on a skateboard all over again
>>
>>1439403
I'll try jessup
>>
>>1439368

If you can ollie that's good enough just stay out of peoples way. You need to start getting familiar with different obstacles , if you skate flat all the time you won't progress , so yea, start going. Some kids might be a dick to you because these days they take it like a sport, but ignore them if they do

So I'm trying to do Ollies while riding for a couple of days now, I can Ollie while standing already, and I'm having a problem to really lift of. Question is: Do I need to use my front foot more to get into the air? Or am I still not popping enough with my back foot?
https://youtu.be/q9b-eTVKbZI
https://youtu.be/Os8ibB0G3oA
>>
>>1439964
First of all put your feet a little bit less forward, and your front foot closer to the nose so you hit it when dragging. Your backfoot is supposed to be in air when your tail has hit the ground, otherwise your board can't lift. Try jumping after popping and then dragging front foot to the nose. Seems like you aren't committing fully hence the backfoot not lifting.
>>
>>1440035
Nevermind just watched it again and ur front foot is in the right spot, you weren't just dragging it high enough. Still ur backfoot prevents the board from lifting at all.
>>
>>1439964

I found thinking of it as a flick with the back foot rather than a stomp helped me.

I also found- and I know I'll catch shit for this- the drills from skating made simple helped. Don't pay for it though, just find the video on YouTube.

>want to up to 7.75 or 8 max for now
>don't have a valid reason to do so if I can't even skate for shit
>want to build a new board in the future(new trucks, wheels, etc.)
>>
>>1440246
Thanks senpai, gonna get lit and then go skate.
>>
>>1440287
what's the matter? just skate what you have now and save up for a new board and buy it later
>>
>>1440309
Feels like I'd learn faster/easier with a bigger deck but hey, if it means I'll get even better than if I had learned with a bigger one then it's all fine.
I tried a bigger board and it's easier to land, which is my problem atm with ollies and my body sometimes doesnt commit when I want to.
>>
>>1440314
>my body sometimes doesnt commit when I want to
>my body doesn't commit

It's most likely you thinking you'll be better with an 8 when you're very capable of doing it with a 7.5, thus making you want to actually commit.

Keep at the 7.5 until it's torn down enough to justify buying a fresh 8.
>>
>>1440318
Alright, when is a board fucked up enough to get rid of it?
It's all scrapped but not too itensive, more underneath the tails since I dont grind yet and has a bit of razor tail

I also have a problem with my grip tape, it's starting to peel off all around the board, especially on the sides(Forgot to use the left over grip tape to rub on the grip tape to prevent this).
Is it that hard to take off a grip tape like people say?
>>
>>1440325
To remove grip, all you need is a hair dryer
>>
>>1440325
It's not really hard at all. I'd say when your board starts to delaminate or gets a bunch of chips out of it or loses its pop then it's probably time to retire it.

It's no big rush when these things happen, but typically these are signs you might need a new board down the road.

Also if you don't know what delamination is it's when the glue between the plies of wood begins to lose it's adhesive and split.
>>
>>1440287
Depending on your trucks, you could just switch deck.
>>

Ricta clouds or Spitfire 80HD

Thanks guys I actually have ricta wheels but they're like super hard. Also should I get super fancy ceramic bearings? or are bones reds like the sticky says good enough? And I never understood what risers were for?
>>
>>1440485
Basic Reds are kinda shit nowadays, Bronson G3 or Super Reds are a better choice.

For riser pads they are used to avoid wheel bite, which occurs when the wheel rubs the skateboard deck during a turn or just after a trick. Personally I don't think they are necessary at all

it's 8/10 the grip, I believe. It's a little less gritty, and you can tell the difference, but it can still be a little rough on the shoes.
