Wrestling was always known as a work, but I think that it was when MMA exposed the general population to what real combat sports looked like, and how far from that pro wrestling is, that it has completely eliminated the suspension of disbelief that pro wrestlers are actually fighting.

Kinda this, but they also make no effort at pretending that it's real fighting. The entire presentation of the product is designed to make it feel like an entertainment show and not a sport (specifically talking about WWE here). When I go back and watch old shit on the network, it's way more convincing that the shit that they're putting out now.
