There are many horses that cannot be ridden, but are comfortable and sound at pasture. Lots of horses get dumped because they have a bowed tendon or minor navicular disease or any one of dozens of minor ailments and injuries that don't require euthanasia, but do require retirement. It's not that every lame or unsound horse is a three-legged arthritic cripple, people just don't want to keep paying for the upkeep of their horse after they can't work it any more.

Absolutely. Everyone too romantic or lazy to chop off their horse's balls has a stud, and any female with a functioning uterus is a potential broodmare, no matter how shitty they are.

The difference with horses is that it's the high, rather than low, end of breeders who are the main contributors to over-population. It's very expensive to breed and raise a foal (roughly 8K on the lowest end, which generally eliminates big things like stud fees, boarding, and insurance), and only the very rich can afford to do it consistently or on any large scale.

I've known and read about breeders who will produce 10-40 foals a season, with the expectation that they'll get 1-2 worth keeping. They act shocked that they can't sell their admittedly excess animals in a vastly over-saturated market, and depressed that once again they sent a trailer (or sometimes trailers) full off to slaughter auctions. Then they breed the exact same way next year.

Just to give a better idea, let's just take Lane's End's top stud. This is Candy Ride, who was undefeated in 6 starts and earned about $750K. He's was ranked the #4 sire in 2016 and has a fee of $60K.

He has 579 registered descendents, with who knows how many which didn't even make it to the registration phase (only 71% of foals do). About 66% of registered horses are expected to make it to the track, so let's be ridiculously generous and assume that 50% of his progeny at least earned back his stud fee. That still leaves 279 registered horses who were financial flops. And again, that's just out of a single stud.

The thoroughbred industry is estimated to account for about 19% of all slaughtered horses in the US, 10,000-15,000 per year. These numbers make it all the more troubling that the industry is very doom-and-gloom about the fact that there were *only* 20,000~ foals born in 2016.

The issue with selling defunct racehorses to private buyers is that there aren't enough people who want them. The private market only has so much room for completely healthy and fully trained horses, and that racehorses are not trained like normal horses and often have injuries further hurts their chances. Selling them to slaughter won't get a good price, but it rapidly and reliably clears stalls which is the priority.

As for amount, usually they go for $0.50-$0.70 cents per pound.

Depends on the horse, but there are tons of success stories. OTTB's have competed at every level up to and including the Olympics (pic related), so you should be able to find one to fit whatever you want to do with them.

There are a lot of groups specifically designed for transitioning racehorses from track to private use, and they generally do a good job at training and figuring out how much they can handle. Definitely utilize them if you're interested.

Not really sure what you mean by configuration, but my favorite is the unicorn hitch.

One of the hardest to control because the horse in front is quite free to move where it likes, so you have to be very selective about the one you train for it. When things go badly they can go down fast, but when things are going right you're on top of the world.

I work with a basically crippled Belgian. We put so much time and money into just keeping her on her feet, but all she really needs is a bullet. The boss "loves" her and can't fathom the idea of putting her down, but she's lost at least 100 pounds over the last year and we can't even find a farier who will work with drafts so we have an old guy who used to raise drafts who does a half assed job and now she has a large split running up her hoof.

So just up the road from me there's this really nice property, but they only have one horse. Everytime I ride my bike past, he always perks up and kinda trots with me. He seems super curious but also really lonely. He's always alone, never once have I seen another horse, or at the very least a human spending time with him. You're going to want to do daily exams and hoof/leg care to make sure they aren't having issues due to the wet conditions, and see what you can do about improving the drainage of your fields (proper rotation schedules, keeping them well-mucked, installing piping if it's really bad).

I rode horses on and off for years. Never really entered competition because neither me nor the horses I rode were show material.

Mainly because I had a severe ankle break that kept my mobility limited for two years. So my riding experience is common but not competition worthy. Maybe I can relearn, haven't gained much weight since then.

Basically I just want a pasture buddy and a trail rider. Would this be a good first horse? I have a boarding barn in mind, but would this even be okay for him? A new social experience with someone naive to this? Or is he too old? Shy are they giving him up at this age?

No, the age is plenty fine. Especially for super-light work, there are plenty of horses who still get ridden well into their mid 20's (and sometimes beyond). And there are such things as injuries that retire a horse from competition (especially something super intense like jumping), but not from riding entirely.

That being said I'd get this horse checked over by a vet before purchasing, which includes a thorough review of their medical files. Then I'd have a good farrier lined up, because this horse is going to need the best hooves possible to prevent those issues from getting worse.

If he clears that, and he's really as sweet as they say, he sounds plenty fine for a first horse. Especially since you have a boarding barn that'd hopefully going to be very helpful along the way.

Just be aware that the hoofs on draft horses can be less 'hollow' than lighter types of horses. If you live in a place that's wet and soggy most of the year, the soles of a draft might get soft more easily. With horses in particular, they're uniquely expensive animals who are almost always bought to perform a specific function. Companionship is generally pretty low on the list, particularly since horses tend to be happiest out in a field with other horses instead of with people. So, while a person may declare they love and adore the horse, it is at least on some level a tool first.

When the horse gets to a point where all it can provide is companionship, it gets very difficult for a lot of people to justify paying the ever increasing expenses when there's a market overflowing with young and healthy animals who can perform the original function. And best case scenario they find someone willing to give the horse the retirement they didn't plan for, but generally it doesn't work out like that.

I was reading the other day about how much over breeding (both in line crossing and just sheer amount of foals) really hurts the entire population with overpopulation.

Maybe it is because the barn I grew up in and learned from was really different, even though it was performance. She kept every single one of her retired horses (pic related). Boarding and lesson fees more than made up for their upkeep. They were also used in lessons for groundwork/lunge line training.

Then again, no matter how rich the student she made them groom, tack, muck, and feed them after the lesson.

Maybe that skews my emotions towards work animals.

It was an OLD Tennessee Walker mare. As the years went by she went completely toothless. Somehow she was a Houdini of a horse and could use her mouth and legs to open gates, or love boards on fences. She would lumber into an open stall and start mouthing the hay for the taste, since she had no teeth.

That horse lived til 41. Didn't know they could get that old.

Update, went with my vet to visit. His heels were extremely low, but I am buddies with a blacksmith and farrier who will work with my vet to develop some corrective shoeing. They aren't too low to the point of him being lame, and he is okay for light riding.

I met the daughters who rode him and even showed him. They seemed like they really didn't want to sell the horse. Pic related. The mother seemed disappointed that I didn't take him home with me that day.

I live in the high rockies. Summers might be a tad warm, we average highs in the 70s F here in the summer, but I figure clipping should help with that.

We do get massive diurnal fluctuations, which might be kinda hard to deal with.

I wouldn't force a cold climate animal to live somewhere hot, that's just torture.

My daughter is allergic to horses, but riding them is a legitimately useful therapy to her (she's disabled af kek).

Isn't there a breed of horse that is less likely to trigger allergic reactions? What is it called and how do I get one to Australia?

As far as I know, the Curly Horse breed is the only breed of horses that is hypoallergenic.

Getting one is the hard part. Assuming you have the money, I'm sure there's probably at least one farm or ranch down there that raises them, I'd be surprised if there wasn't. If there is, it's just a matter of contacting them, picking the right horse, and hoping it's for sale. Here's what a quick google search turned up http://www.yarraleigh.com.au/

If there aren't any down under, then you might need to travel. Again, it's a matter of finding a breeder, picking the right horse, and then transporting him/her back home. This second option would be wayyyyy more expensive, as transporting a horse (probably by plane) is not cheap. But it's safe and can be done.

If you're a first time horse owner, I encourage you to educate yourself. When you buy the horse, make sure you have him/her checked thoroughly by a vet, get medical records too if you can. You don't want to get burned. Be aware, taking care of a horse is a lot of work, but I think it's well worth it!

Are you sure it's specifically the horses and not everything that comes along with horses? Like hay, insects, mold, etc.. You could get a horse that gave off absolutely 0 dander and still get allergic issues.

Horses are expensive, especially from a breed that would need to come from one of a very limited amount of farms or imported, and their upkeep is even more so. Considering how rare they are, you're likely to need to buy a horse that's completely untrained and therefore would take more time and money (such as a retired broodmare). You definitely won't find one trained to handle the potentially spastic or otherwise uncontrolled movements of a disabled child.

And, like all "hypoallergenic" animals, there's no guarantee that that particular animal won't trigger an individual person's allergies. You can't just buy the most economical one you find and assume. That could mean buying a very young horse so, on top of everything, you'd be waiting a few years for it to be developed and calm enough to be ridden like you're planning.

Seriously, just go for a different therapy.

We basically have two problems here during winter: rain rot/skin funk/dermatophilosis occuring below the knees, and soft soles on the hoofs.

If the paddock is muddy, and they get muddy above the hoofs and below the knees, you can prevent, to some extent, skin funk by hosing the mud away when they are taken in from the paddock. However, if the mud has started to dry up, you might end up causing more problems, as their legs will be wet even longer.
If it should happen that your horse gets skin funk, you can treat it by washing it with a soap with chlorhexidine. However, you have to be careful not to wash too much or too often, as this might make it more prone to contracting more/other infections in the skin.

As to the soft soles, I usually use Cornucrescine Daily Hoof Barrier or Stockholm tar on the soles to prevent them from getting too soft. Furthermore, I also get my farrier to apply snow pads to the shoes - you can get these as either a rubber strip that follows the shoe, or as a plate that covers the entire sole.

They like over-exposing him and shooting from dumb angles while he postures for mares, but yeah he's real. Seems a lot less shopped than most stud photos, and they're even willing to show the hooves which is pretty rare. His stud page is far more concerned with his color and plethora of foals than his (probably non-existent) achievements, though, so they probably don't know "better".

Ah, ok. The summers here are usually somewhat dry, so I'm not familiar with a warm and wet environment. But I would guess that you would have to more aware of skin rot than soft soles.

However, if your horses have access to a large paddock (e.g. 60x140 meters) with multiple exits (so they don't stand and wait at the same place each day), and you don't place the hay in the same place every day, I guess you'll be fine.

They're pretty nice. Originating from Norway, they're a light draft, so they can be used for work, but also for things like riding. They have a very distinctive dorsal stripe that runs the length of their body from mane to tail. Often times people trim their manes into designs, pic related. I think they're super cool, but I'm a sucker for all the scandinavian horse breeds, so I might be a bit biased.

He'd probably be ok for trails and maybe some lesson work, but not for Tennessee Walker things. He has several faults that would result in a short, choppy stride and longevity concerns. Bad news in a breed literally all about its long, smooth gait, and likely why he has no pictures under saddle.

Basically he'd be passable as a gelding, and definitely has no business siring... 80 foals jfc. Have to love his description, though:

The current record is held by a then-2 year old filly named Winning Brew. It was her first race, and she subsequently had a middling record mostly spent in claiming races before retiring at the end of her 3 year old year. I can't tell if it was injury, but she didn't really need one to retire since her earnings fell to nothing.

Far as I can tell, records stop after that which means she wasn't bred. So, best case scenario, she's someone's pet right now.

That's actually a really great question, especially since the TRA is one of the worst for uterus = broodmare. You'd think they would have especially been interested in breeding the fastest horse on record, so it really disappointing that I couldn't find out what happened to her.

Best guess is that the farm was more concerned with emptying a stall than having a foal. When no breeding farms were willing to take her, she was sold off to some non-racing entity.

I'd assume Appaloosa, but honestly it's pretty impossible to tell without bloodlines.

Appaloosas have been introduced to Knabstrupper lines since the early 70's to lighten them up, and Appaloosas were never all that homogeneous a breed to begin with (and honestly the modern registry system is a joke). Neither one is distinct enough anymore to have sure-fire anatomical tells.

Mostly because the club furiously insists that it's a breed, rather than color, registry. That claim rings very false when they created a system that puts all the emphasis on color with only a nod towards breed.

In addition to letting half appaloosas register with the same benefits as full ones (so long as they have the right color), and making a second-class designation for full-blooded appaloosas who dare be born solid (making them not count towards a resulting foal having an appaloosa parent), they also have something called the 'hardship clause'.

Basically any horse with characteristic appaloosa markings can be registered as an appaloosa without pedigree, DNA, or any other evidence that they are what they say they are. And, as I said, those traits aren't horribly unique anymore because appaloosas have been intermixed with a lot of breeds. For example, this Knabstrupper could easily be registered under the hardship clause because he has all three distinguishing traits (mottled skin, striped hooves, white sclera around the eye), despite the fact that any appaloosa in him could be distant or non-existent.

Due to this mess, they've created a breed that cannot be identified by anything but its color. Appaloosa manes and tails might be incredibly sparse or luxurious, they can have short or tall heights on heavy or light-boned frames, and so on. So the question "is this an appaloosa?" can basically always be answered as a yes because, if it's the right color, the club will happily consider it one.

Ah - I thought you referred to breeding and registry systems in general, and not just specifically the Appaloosa breed. It sounds similar to the Pinto horse, which is also an 'open book' that require only a specific color-pattern.
I only have some experience with the breeding standards of the Fjord horse and Knabstrupper horse, and they seem pretty strict, considering it's closed books and all.
