what in the unholy fuck
>>2341038
Why doesn't he just let them have it?
>>2341050
They are made for tearing pieces off of a heavy dead animal corpse, if he just let the thing go they would drag it all over the place.
>>2341076
wtf
could it be that it is doing it just for fun?
>>2341107
It probably thinks its an egg and is trying to break it
>>2341127
Or a nut. Several bird species use some pretty clever ways to break open nuts. Like crows have been on camera dropping walnuts in to traffic on purpose so the nuts get run over. They then wait for a gap in the cars to swoop down and collect the goods.
>>2341127
ah yeah i realised it too after posting
>>2341076
Being a bird must be suffering. They're some of the most intelligent animals on Earth and understand some advanced concepts like tool making and fun, but lack the arms, hands, and fingers required to actually craft anything that can amuse them. So you get them trying poorly to bounce a ball but of course a bird can't dribble it, or like >>2340843 where they just want to slide but have to do it in the more basic and bare bones way.
>>2341491
I'd say being able to fly more than makes up for that.
>>2341711
But for a bird flying is just a normal every day boring thing to do, it's work. I bet they wish they could drive cars and play video games.
>>2341732
they're also not smart enough to know what they're missing not having hands.

>>2341076

>>2342005
It's a red-legged seriema. They along with the black-legged make the last relatives to the ancient terrorbirds.
>>2341491

>>2342088
gotchu covered fampai
>>2341491
Aren't most birds pretty stupid?
I thought crows and the like were exceptions, not the norm.
>>2342187
There's a lot of variance depending on type of bird, but generally corvids, parrots, and vultures are considered to be above the rest.
>>2342187
1. psychometrics is still in its infancy even for man, much less for bird.
2. most studies on birds use brain to body size ratio or EQ, both are ineffective when comparing non-mammalian creatures.
3. most studies on corvid or psittiacine intelligence rely on observational experiments.
4. Most birds on earth are not accessible in a laboratory setting to researchers.
5. Problem solving abilities seems to be present across multiple bird lineages. Tool use in birds can be demonstrated in passerines, columbiformes, galliformes, psittacines, charadriiformes, accipitriformes, falconiformes, piciformes, and several dozen other families. This represents a broad range of polyphyletic clades in which problem solving ability has either been retained from a common ancestor or evolved independently. Many of these clades are understudied in the literature. Crows and magpies and parrots are sexy, woodpeckers and ducks are not. Confirmation bias also plays a role.
I don't trust anyone's assessment of their animal's intelligence. People are just not good judges of intelligence, not in their own species, and certainly not in other species. Many times the bird is smarter than they. Many times they're just regurgitating what the latest meta analysis told them. Remember that when you hear someone judging intelligence in an animal, it's invariably copypasted Google Scholar knowledge.
Unfortunately for those who do copypaste Google Scholar, knowledge does not work like this and science always marches on.

Anyway, thanks lad.
Now I'm good and mad.
There's some sort of tweety bird outside my window in some tree somewhere- singing.
What's he got to be so happy about? There's cats, hawk and children infesting this neighborhood everywhere.
Doesn't he know death looms around every corner? Doesn't he know the winter will return and deprive him of food for months? Doesn't he know the whole world is a terrible, awful place for everything, and the most miserable thing about it is the horrible people in it?
He's not getting my bread. I barely have groceries till payday. I got more peanut butter than jelly. I don't even have enough milk for all my cereal. Ants are in the kitchen and whole damn world is coming apart, blatant communists on tv and with nothing but the feathers on his head, this bird has the NERVE to sing just because the sun FINALLY came out.

This is the best bird I've had. He's an invasive flying rat.
Who has a bigger vocabulary than all my other birds combined. And he was the ugliest dying little shit when we first got him. I spent 6 months hand feeding this bastard to health. WORTH IT. Never released him obviously.
>>2349726

Not sure why people hate starlings other than they're told to by society. They're great looking birds.
>>2349739
They've become a favorite for me. I didn't know how smart and gorgeous they were. They aren't as bad as people say, even as far as their impact on the environment. They are definitely little shitheads though.
But we're just like them, and any other invasive species :P We just happen to be on top.

>>2348325
The mirror could be a lot of the problem, since he's got another 'bird' to try and bond/socialize with
Not using a house seems pretty normal, my cockatiel has a spot in his cage he likes to sleep in but will at least play in and on his little house-tent thing
Your bird may prefer being misted or having water sprinkled on him for baths
If he's interested in you/what you do, then a good way to get them to try food is to either pretend to or actually eat a little bit yourself
Do you give him chances to come out of his cage? You don't have to explicitly pull him out, but just leaving the door open and letting him check things out on his own would be a good place to start. I also whistle to my bird all the time, and when he gets in a singing mood he goes to town. He also does contact calls when I leave line of sight, and I reply back so he knows where I am
Another thing that's been great, get some plastic safety chain from a hardware store, turn it into a necklace, and attach toys to it. Things like sisal twine, wooden/plastic beads from craft stores, baby toys, keys, etc are all great
My little guy is very attached to me, and if he didn't startle so easily he'd probably never be anywhere but on me. And if he'd stop trying to remove moles/acne/hair he'd get to hang out with me as long as he wanted, but that's a work in progress
>>2349828

Birds Are Not Important
>>2350476

>>2350476
>Some species of vultures in India were almost wiped out because of the anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac, which was administered to livestock and is extremely toxic to vultures, who were eating the carcasses. At least 3 species are still close to extinction because of it.
>By the time it was discovered what was killing the birds, the population of white-rumped vultures (the most affected by diclofenac) had been reduced by over 99% in a period of less than ten years. This is a bird that in the 80s was so abundant it was considered a nuisance. Indian and Slender-billed Vulture populations were reduced by almost 97%.
>The sudden massive decline in vulture populations had a major impact on human health in that area, because uneaten dead animals not only contaminated water supplies, but caused a population boom in feral dogs, which then led to a rabies crisis.

Yes. The majority of birds get fed by both parents because the chicks grow so fast that it's super-hard for just one parent to feed them enough.
Species where just one parent raises the chick tend to have weird mating systems.

>Parent owns store in a strip mall, has bird problem in roof
>Probably getting in through the hole in the wall the landlord never fixed
>Last year there were a few birds up in the roof, landlord dealt with it by killing all of them with a broom
>Store staff don't want that to happen again, so they're trying to ignore the problem
>Did some research and have formulated a plan to deal with them
Plan is:
>Climb into roof (Very roomy, about 7' of vertical space in the center)
>Look around and get a better look at some of the nests/chicks, have some goggles and a dust mask as well
>Probably take pictures and post here to try and get help identifying species/age
>Use that to determine when they're going to fledge
>When that time comes either chase all of them out and/or catch them with nets
>Fix any and all access holes with chickenwire/expanding foam
>Throw out the nests and leave some mothballs around for good measure
Any thoughts or suggestions? Also apparently yesterday 2 baby birds fell out of the eaves on the front of the building and died, but they were small, 'naked', and the worker that dealt with them didn't take pictures.
I do like birds and wouldn't be against taking care of stragglers, but judging from how noisy it got when I smacked a piece of metal with a hammer, I'm going to guess there's easily a dozen chicks up there. I neither want to take care of 12+ baby birds nor massacre 12+ baby birds

He does looked stressed.
Other than that, I don't know
>>2356964
He's breathing a lot faster than usual and for some reason he began to lay down with his whole body when he goes to sleep.
I took him to the vet, but she said that she doesn't treat birds very often, especially this small, so she couldn't help me.
>>2356989
Vet sounds incompetent. Find a better one.
Bet she still charged you $80.
>>2357019
She didn't charge me anything. She said that he's too small so she can't check his temperature or breathing. She advised me to call the zoo's bird department and maybe look for help there since there aren't many vets that treat birds here.
The only problem is that the zoo is so far away and there's no way I can bring him there even if they could help me. I also only have 110 euros left in my account and I don't know if that's enough for his treatment.
Fuck, I hope he gets better although I don't have much hope. He's still eating, drinking and everything but his breathing is not getting better. I really don't want to lose him...
>>2357052
Hate to even recommend this but maybe you could ask on some local bird forums if anyone would like to have him. Maybe they could afford to get him some treatment. It would be hard to do, but it's better than letting him die.
That is if there's anything wrong at all, which from the sound of it is still uncertain. I wouldn't want you to give away your bird for no reason if it turns out he's really fine.
>>2357067
Thanks for the offer, but there aren't a lot of active lithuanian parrot forums and I don't think that many people would take a sick bird.
I'm still trying to find a way to help him though. I was thinking of calling that zoo and maybe take a taxi to get there, but I'm not sure if I have enough money for that.
I'm afraid that while I sit here doing shit, he's getting worse. And I would still need to wait at least until Tuesday if I want to bring him to the vet because of fucking Easter.
If only I wasn't such a failure and passed my driving test, I could take him to the vet myself and he'd probably be fine by now.

BIRDFAG please help!
What swallow is this?
I want to believe it is a Northern Rough-winged, but how can I be sure it is not some larval form of another swallow (tree, violet-green, or other)?
>>2343067
That is a big god damn bird
>>2358396
It's a right right left right down.
>>2342600
Seconded. It used to be nice to see the occasional flock fly over my neighborhood, back when I didn't have nests near me. Now I can't stand them. At my new place there are nesting areas in two separate places over the hill. I hear these bastards nonstop. If one group isn't noisy, the other is. What's with geese, anyway? Ever notice, no matter what they're doing, they have to honk continuously during it?
>>2340597
WTF is this thing? It looks like a Fucking furry dinosaur
>>2358396
It's a Northern Rough-winged Swallow. The other two you mentioned are green and fancy looking, with sharp chirpy calls. Rough-wings are the color of dirt and make farting noises.
>>2352843
Drink your tea! I moved out of the FL countryside and into the city recently so I don't get to hear this anymore...

Don't birds only grow new feathers once a year? It's amazing to me they can make them last that long without them all getting damaged, torn out, etc.
>>2359390
They normally molt feathers like once a year, but if a feather is lost they'll immediately start growing a new one to replace it

>>2359444
Are birds the only animal other than man that has learned how to effectively use bait?
There is that one webm of the killer whale laying some food down and grabbing a bird so I guess them and dolphins, though in the wild I'm not sure they could use those skills really.

>>2363391
I used to go to parks and get really bored because all I cared about was mammals and aside from a squirrel or stray cat there were none. Then I learned about birds and it's like holy shit these things are fucking everywhere. Now sometimes I see up to 30 species per visit. It's amazing since before I had no idea they even existed.

>>2367407
Apparently you don't understand the concept of birdwatching. The ID process is the hardest part, and birdfag has correctly identified every bird ITT, as well as others. It's a skill not many people can do and a contribution to the thread.
What have you done other than criticize like a faggot?
>>2367412
Beginner birdwatcher here, can confirm, the thrill and challenge for me is IDing them. I can only do a small handful (relatively speaking) of local ones here, but there are people who have like counts in the thousands from all over the world who can instantly ID some random bird. It's really impressive.
>>2367407
Being knowledgeable about something doesn't mean you're autistic.
>>2367412
>>2367578
Thanks. I enjoy IDing birds for fun, especially in cases where it helps out others. It reduces spam on Ebird and RBAs and increases the quality of birding in general. When people are asking for IDs I normally go into field marks as well to help them improve their ID skills. I'm planning to get a degree in Ornithology once I finish wildlife biology and other general shit.
>>2367653
>tfw too late to get an ornithology degree
I should've done it 15 years ago but I didn't get into birds until last year. Oh well, at least I can still enjoy them. Saw two Nashville Warblers and a Warbling Vireo tonight. Pretty cool.

I should get at least two new sandpipers out of it, I hope.
>>2341491
they have the talons and beak. they're fine
>>2369256
If you get up that early, feel groggy and weary from the effort, and for a second doubt the merit of your venture, remember this:
You got to wake up that day and see a sand piper, and I did not.
And if you see none, you got the hope of pursuit. I wont have that either.
That should give you a sense of gratitude for an enviable experience.
Be blessed.

Hey that is the extended version.
One of my cockatiels has this habit of repeatedly shaking his head. Like a small shake, he looks like one of those emo kids constantly trying to flick their dumb hair out of their eyes. My other one doesn't do it so I assume it's not a species-wide thing. Is this something I should bring up with the vet? Or is he just a weirdo bothered by the existence of his own crest moving around up there?

In short : yes, there's a shit pile of animals that use some form of baiting behavior in the wild. National Geographic has a nifty crib sheet to give you an idea of how wide spread and diverse tool use is in animals other than man.

How did you become so knowledgeable?
I'm still trying to learn the birds in the states. I haven't found a good source for knowledge on birds in other countries.
Semi-related, anyone know how to take photos of nocturnal birds? There are tons of Poorwhills around me, but my camera can't pick them up at night.
>>2369939

Either use a night-vision or low-light lens (the better way) or bring a spotlight (the much more intrusive way).
>>2369950
Thanks, low-light lens will have to be the way then.

Thank you anon, I will seek out a sandpiper in your honor. I will do my best to report back with good results.
>>2342237
Because they are criminally underrated and everyone dislikes them for not good reason, no one really learns about them.
I found this egg, probably fell from the nest. Anyone know what species it is?
Location, central balkan
>>2357183
>>2357187
Update: Birds left the nest and before anymore eggs were laid I went in and sealed up the hole and chunked the nest
Took 2 contractor garbage bags to get it all out of there, and I found 2 types of eggs
Pic related is the bigger of the 2, along with a feather, not a whole lot but I'm guessing the nestlings I saw were from them
However I found a shitload of smaller, white, almost round eggs throughout the nest. All of them looked like they had hatched and whatnot, but they were much smaller than these
Updating purely out of curiosity of what might have been up there
