The Plant General - MRI Edition

Welcome to /plant/, the magical green place on this blue board. ITT: sleepy snoozy VFTs, smug N. edwardsiana owners and beautiful budding normie seedlings.

/Plant/ is for the discussion of plants (obviously). Horticulturists, hobbyists and botanists welcome! Questions about plants? Want to show off your two inch dick-I mean plant? Maybe you want to start growing something new and exciting? Well come on over to /plant/!

Introducing a new basic caresheet with every thread: Stapelia/Orbea edition:
>fairly standard succulent care, most commercial species are easy
>well-draining cacti/succulent soil
>light watering, keep it dry in winter
>direct sun to very light shade
>don't let it get too cold, minimum 10c
>wait until flowering occurs to hide the smell of any rotting corpses you may be hiding

I bought a String of Pearls from a store that had it hanging outside and got drenched after a rainstorm, from what I read too much water can lead to root-rot. I thought I could salvage it, repotted it in new soil and watered it only 3 weeks at a time and thought it would rebound.

It looks like this now, only 2 or 3 green sprouts, the rest looks dead. Is there anything I can do to get it to grow healthily again?

Go to the American Orchid society website and they have care sheets for a lot of species.

Orchids differ in the conditions they need. The ones in your picture are Phalaenopsis and mostly the ones sold cheaply in Home/DIY stores and supermarkets.

They're normally hybrid clones and will be fine on a dim (not south facing) window but kept humid and watered once/few times a week depending on temperature.

Nope, every thread OP injects in a little bit of the flavour of the last thread, and as you can visibly infer, we also have an established system of adding a new caresheet every new thread. Not even a hint of effort or consideration this time round.

>>
>>2337266
A bit off topic, but am I the only who's amazed to find all these bugs appearing, apparently, out of nowhere on the pots and related areas?

I mean, I live on the city, so I see a daily dose of spiders, worms and such, but that's it. Then one day I'm watering the plants and I find insects that I haven't seen before. Like this green spider, or that tiny millipede (those are bad, right?), and so on. From where did you just came, buddy?

The weirdest thing I remember was a small yellow and brown snake. Given its size, I didn't thought it would be dangerous, so I just put it into a shovel and dump it into some park. Hope the best for it

Alder sap is packed with dark tannins (as with tea plants etc., presumably to deter pests), so it stains the tree when cut.

The last image in OP didn't work because Jackie 4chan deleted a bunch of images. The problem was site wide, not just here.
The very first /plant/ general was started by a guy who was really in to carnivorous plants, and every general since has been about 90% carnivorous plants. All other forms of plant life has been welcome, but the content of each thread depends on what everyone contributes.
Not to mention it's barely spring in a lot of places, and traffic will pick up once the growing season does.
Nice pics BTW, keep them coming.

I only grow highland miniatures in a tank - masdevallias growing in the shaded bits next to my Heliamphora.

I know cattleya, epidendrum and dendrobium need good amounts of light and if you keep the humidity and temperature right they should be ok in a tank. Read the AOS (American Orchid Society) they have care sheets for a lot of species.

Dionaea are really slow too. These were born last august and the biggest one is like 0.5 cm... also even if they are seeds from a cultivar it's not sure that they will bear the parents' characteristics.
Mine are self pollinated B52 and I think only the big one will grow to be a giant, and maybe the one in the low center.

Drosera are fuckin easy to grow tho.

I've had it for a little over 2 years and recently it started leaning over because it's too tall, so I moved it to the sill of the window it was near thinking it needed more sun. Well now it's turning pink which I read is from too much sun. I'm not sure what to do. The bottom leaves feel hollow but the top ones are firm. Does it need a bigger pot? More water or less water? Plant food? I'm at a loss here.

Specifically with the 'Sunflower' cultivar

I was thinking about buying one (this cultivar is apparently self-fertile)

which place would be better?

When do they get their first fruits?

>help me
Gently pick at the roots until they are no longer root bound to the shape of the container.
Fill larger pot with a few inches of fresh dirt, then set the plant in it with the tap root pointed down if it has one, fill the rest of the pot up with loose, fresh dirt, carefully spreading the root system out as you go. Give it a good watering and plenty of light.
Or did you already know all this and just used "help me" as an expression of exasperation?
Autistic spaz's like myself have difficulties with this stuff you know.

Its an orchid so no dirt
Also yes i already knew this. It's taken me nearly two hours to get this finished! I know they like to be pot bound but i think i left this one too long. Stepped up from a 12cm pot to a 15cm pot... But considering how root bound it was i think it'll quickly fill that up too.
>>
>>2345231
Also i should point out that because it's an orchid, i was trying to remove all the old bark so that it doesn't start to decay and remove nitrogen from her. Also you have to try not to damage any of the roots. Damn near impossible by most counts

Okay so today I picked up a pump mister at Lowe's, I wanted it for misting and watering not only plants, but animals too (frogs, geckos, etc)

However, upon closer inspection at home, I noticed a warning on the side, pic related. Is this warning for the sprayer itself, or is it just put on there because they're usually used for pesticides or fertilizers, and they just preemptively put a label there?

I mean the material it's made out of seems like regular old plastic, the only point of concern obvious to me is that the little pump-valve thing on top is lubed up.

Any ideas? I'm going to return it and find a safe one if there's any reason that this could make my animals and plants sick

BTW the brand is named Chapin

So... does anyone in here have experience with roselle plants?

I bought some seeds, and tried to germinate them, but haven't had luck so far, so I'm kind of disappointed. Tried first just plating directly into the soil, but that didn't work, so now I'm trying the wet paper method, but rather than enclosing them in a plastic bag, they are sealed in a tupperware container on top of a warm surface. However, after a week, haven't seen any of them to sprout.

So, any advice?

Does anyone here have experience growing Hydrangea? I'm really interested in keeping house plants, but I don't know where to start.
>>
>>2345703
For starters, far away from kids. Hydrangeas contain toxic substances which can become fatal if too much is taken.

Of course, we're talking about eating a whole load of the plant, so is still legal to grown hydrangeas and relatively safe to be in everybody gardens. However, kids tend to eat lots of things, and a small dose, given their age, can made them ill, so better safe than sorry.

Do succulents use up nutrients in the soil? I have a 2 yr old Aloe Vera plant in a small container. It has about as much dirt as a quarter can of soda so it's quite tiny. It looks healthy, just wondering if he needs more space.

That's quite interesting. Part of me says to leave them on since that way, the chances of root rot are decreased, but another part of me asks whether or not a piece of bark can support an adult orchid, given their size...

What the hell is wrong with my latest batch of aloe cuttings?

all the whiteish brown ones are the new ones, green ones are old.
green ones were the same size when I planted them, and I've changed nothing.

Does aloe vera have a max temperature before it starts just getting cooked?
The only thing I can think of is it's getting too hot in the greenhouse now that it's spring since the only difference is that those were planted in fall.

It gets up to 138 in the greenhouse during the day.
>>
>>2348903
Yeah sounds like you cooked them, that's fucking hot in there. I assume that back corner is cooler than the front, hence the first couple of rows of cuttings suffering so badly.
>>2347254
Maaan the deformed cultivars really creep me out, there's something so awful about the gnarled flesh of the leaves in particular
>>
>>2348930
Sawtooth isn't even close to being the most mutilated cultivar
>>
>>2348930
Well the ones in the back were where the brown ones were now when they were that size

I basically start off the small ones in the front
move them back when they grow for the next batch
the larger ones get replanted in actual pots to the left
then once bigger they go on the shelf outside.

Usually I get a 60%ish survival rate per group (2 total so far, both were very similar in yield and survival rates) but this current group has a fucking 0- 2 plant rate, they are all that fucking brown color.

As for the temp, whats the max temp that I should start cracking the flap to air it out?

As a side note, I always assumed the conditions inside were pretty good since I got one of the aloe vera to flower inside the greenhouse.

My windows face west and north, and there's also a large door that opens to the east. I have basically zero experience taking care of plants, so what would you guys recommend if I'm more interested in pretty flowers than venus flytraps? Oh, also, I'm in North Carolina, so I think pretty much anything would grow well here.
>>
>>2356274
Phalaenopsis for the west window, a very easy orchid with big rewarding flowers.
Also flytraps can't be grown indoors.

1) Please don't be a fucking idiot and learn how to save and budget
2) Nice, cheap pretty flowers can include: Anthurium (bulletproof), Hippeastrum (bulbous, needs a bit more attention), and for a north window, Spathiphyllum (If you kill this thing, there is no hope for you as a horticulturalist). I'm going to disagree with >>2356297 and not recommend Phalaenopsis hybrids (supermarket orchids). They may be easy orchids but they are still fucking orchids. Make a dumb amateur mistake with a weakened plant, and your soul will be stained with the foul stench of death
>>
>>2356684
Cotyledon tomentosa/ladismithiensis. "Teddy Bear Paws".
Likes plenty of light, little water, and can't handle any frost at all. Will grow to around half a meter and can be easily propagated once the stems become woody.
A very interesting cotyledon.

I actually already have a peace lily. It's still struggling along, but there's something wrong with the soil it's potted in and it retains way too much water and I forgot to water it because I was so used to it being soggy.
>>
>>2357383
Well it's not dead so that's good. If the soil was waterlogged, make sure the plant isn't suffering from rot or something. It's always a good idea to check and when you repot, mix copious amounts of perlite into the soil.

How do you guys not kill yourselves growing plants? it's gotta be so boring God damn. Taking care of my amphibians and insects is >fun / engaging but I can't fathom the plant thing. Worse thing is that I'm gonna have to learn and get into a bit since I'm planning on making a vivarium and a planted freshwater aquarium but I'm afraid of having this shit die on me because I never really took care of plants per se, never tried to own a plant for the sake of owning a plant.

Both, nep seeds have a short window where they're viable. A lot of the sellers from place like China or Israel will just sell you seeds of a completely different plant. Best place would be facebook or a forum where its easy to call them out if they are fake. People don't offer nep seed very regularly. Honestly its easier to just start with small plants.
>>
>>2363463
Well most common (house) plants have basically no care requirements, so there's that.

In the end it's always about finding out about the most important abiotic and biotic factors for the particular species and then basically relaying them in a way that idiots can understand them. This really isn't very different for animals and plants.

>Not even to mention that most animals come pre-identified.
You wouldn't fucking belive the amount of people that get tarantulas from shit stores like petco that only give them some meaningless common name. And even if they try to find out how to properly care for it, googling the common names only leads you to caresheets that have been written by the same sort of idiots. It's an endless circle of retardation.

Anyway, I planted my Amorphophallus albus and Arisaema fargesii bulbs now. Hopefully even a complete plant noob like myself won't fuck this up.

Newbie here, I just got a small flytrap from a plant section in a reptile expo out of curiosity and impulse. I used to have one as a gift years ago but a particularly harsh winter completely froze it to death and I'd like to take better care of this one.

Thanks. It's just regular sanguinea. I use 4 of those LED T8 replacement bulbs. They put out enough light to keep all the plants I grow happy. But they aren't necessary is you have a location that gets more than 3 hours of direct sun and bright light the rest of the day.

This, if you can't get sphagnum moss, I'd suggest adding fine quartz sand into the mix. Also get rid of the black pot, get a clear colored one, since they are really sensitive to overheating.
>>

>>2365804
What about peat moss? I've heard that's fine and I have some on hand
>>
>>2365834
Yeah but mix it with quartz sand.
Peat moss tends to compact and form clods, which can suffocate the sensitive dionaea roots and rhizome.
>>
>>2365840
Probably a dumb question, but is aquarium sand viable? I figured I'd ask if I can make use of stuff I have on hand before looking for specifically for stuff
>>
>>2365879
Yes. It's that type of sand.

What kind of plant is this?

It wasn't that old at the time of the pic, around 3-4 years. Unfortunately I don't have it now. Nepenthes are very rewarding as plants but you will need some patience to get really large plants.

Can anyone diagnose this? I`m guessing its a nutrient deficiency of some type, I gave it some plant food last week, and checked the PH of the water I was using. Wondering If I should try giving it nutrients again.

I have 4 other plants that don`t have these symptoms, but this one is a different strain

No idea but why was your solution to tear it off?

I think it's a mulberry tree. Enjoy your fruit.

>>2368353
You burnt it up by being an asshole that can't perform organic gardening. Flush it extremely well or set it on fire, because it's going to die.
>>
>>2368446
Nevermind, not mulberry, probably holly or something useless.
>>
>>2368353
flush the earth, it seems like some kind of fertilizer poisoning, also keep your expectations to a minimum.
what strain is it and what products have you poured in that poor thing?

He's already poisoned the fuck out of it. Should've made his own dirt.

<Motherfucking PEACE LILY. Half a living room worth of flower. I love it, but the watering and repotting cycles are unclear.

Pot is 14 inches wide, 14 inches deep, tiny as fuck but people are telling me to wait a while to repot. I don't believe them. It has to be ready.
Watering was stated as once every two weeks, which is ridiculous for anything that isn't a cactus, so I don't believe the shit either. Been keeping soil moist as I do with all my plants.

Any input on repotting and watering? Are these picky? It started sagging after 2 days of no water so I put water in and it perked right back up, which is why I think these people are feeding me things they know nothing about, but correct me please.

If I make a temp email, could anyone hit me up and send me 3-4 ghost pepper seeds? I would really like a plant this year, they are my favorite peppers and quite expenisive to buy seeds.
I don't have seeds to trade but can harvest and mail whatever the helll you want from the North WV area, our plants are extremely diverse so I can probably get anything you want in the world of northeastern US plants.
I just need the delicious ghost peppers in my food this year.

Fox farm big boom, maybe 1 cap full every few waterings (Spread across 5 plants).

Guessing I should have swapped the for fresh soil after the previous plant. Probably is common knowledge, but figuring it out as I go ;[

Strain is gorilla glue #4

Lipstick plant anon here, I've had a lipstick plant in water for about 2-3 months now and I have a bunch of roots anywhere from 1-4 inches long, I pulled the plant out to take a look at it and it appears that some new stems are coming out of the node I have submerged. My question is should I take the lipstick plant out and stick it in dirt or should I leave it in the water and allow the stems to grow. Any tips on moving a plant from water to dirt would also be appreciated.
