Trying soil less (vermiculite/perlite/peat moss) germination since my last germination attempts with potting mix all failed. Covered seeds with vermiculite but it feels a bit weird since the granules are so large. Also labelled the plants this time.

I'd honestly prefer bugguy over the influx of new anons that spew shit to derail threads. At least I could filter plont and he was good for plant threads

Do you think pic related is salvageable? I went on vacation and my roommate had literally one job and didn't do it.

I liked the pictures of his garden, not to mention he's easy on the eyes as well. Oh well.
>>
>>2272040
Go away bugguy.
Seriously though, he was good at plant ID, and I personally never had an issue with him.
For all the aggravation he caused being "easy on the eyes" doesn't make up for it at all. Pretty shallow statement TBQH senpai.
>>
>>2272063
Not bugguy, but I just think he was passionate about his beliefs. And I didn't say his physical appearance excused any butt hurt he caused. I just like the way he looks.

Kind of like appreciating the beauty of dangerous animal who would still tear you apart whether you thought it was pretty or not.

I'll leave now so as not to derail the thread, just popped in to find out why I don't see "plont posts" anymore. I apologize for my shallowness, anon.

Anyone knows how this plant is called, and weather its normal its been loosing leafs/stalks lately - basically since late autumn.
They look healthy, and then suddenly they break at the bottom and die, and it already happened to 4 out of 8 stalks.
Am I doing something wrong or is this a cycle?

Alocasia x amazonica

Is there any saving it? My mom just gave it to me. She's had it for close to 18 years.
>>
>>2272168
Yes, it's just a bit sunburnt. It's all healed up, just the "scars" remained. If you're overwintering it in a dark place make sure to gradually place it into a sunny place in spring. Putting it outside as soon as possible (end of March, but depends on temperatures) helps a lot too.

It looks ok for an aloe. Keep in mind that most Aloes are not really appealing once they get bigger. Don't expect too much.

Is that hard? Don't want to try anything hard just yet after failing to germinate a bunch of lettuce in potting mix. That flower looks pretty though.

Also it turns out the Marigolds have sprouted too. It's only been three days, I was expecting two weeks based on the seed packaging info but oops here we go.

Also my cuttings outside aren't growing roots at all and the stems are blackening; maybe I overestimated how much cuttings need water.
>>
>>2272808
>failing to germinate a bunch of lettuce in potting mix
what the fuck are you doing to them? did you microwave the seeds or something? do you water them with methanol?
>>
>>2272819
Fuck if I know. Kept them indoors on bright windowsill in 6-chambered pot covered with plastic and spritzed water each morning. Perhaps it was the heat or wrong water amounts or bad seeds.
I did see one sprout once, but then the next day something had eaten it.

>>
>>2275343
Well yeah it ain't too bad if you always water thoroughly and then discard what has collected in the "saucer", but if you like "comfy" (i.e. lazy) watering like I do (i.e. watering back just as much as has evaporated) and have some rather acid-loving plants like citrus indoors from early October to late April (lemons are such sissies with their constant >12°C requirement desu), the alakline buildup might get worrisome.
For such plants I have to go outside and use the 1m^3 rainwater collection tank which is generally always full over winter

Never ever trust the advice (((they))) give, they're just selling plants for a quick profit, always do your own research for yourself. You could have at least guessed though, letting a bog plant completely dry out is bound to be wrong (and I assume it was sat indoors during that time?).

Don't overthink it
Let it dry out before watering, as too much water can damage the leaves. As for light, lemme give you an idea of what they'll tokerate: Here in socal, I used to grow them outside under a bit of shade most of the year and they had no problem. Temperatures got so hot I had to take my sarrs in.

Does anyone here own/have owned/have experience with Bonsai trees? Especially with Japanese Maple. I think it's a beautiful tree and would like to grow one, any tips.

P.s. I'm new to Bansai trees so tips in general would be appreciated.
>>
>>2279214
You don't 'grow' bonsai. They're more of an artform that you have to nurture and direct over many many years. It's a hardcore hobby that needs extreme patience and time input, hence why only nutty retired Japs do it.

Also, decent-looking bonsai are almost all temperate trees e.g. Maple species, so they need to be grown outdoors where the normal tree would be (but with extra provisions to protect it from the weather).
>>
>>2279214
http://www.bonsai4me.com/SpeciesGuide/AcerPalmatum.html

and what >>2279266 said. You can buy nursery raised trees that are 2-3 years old and start there.

Or look for slightly older trees that may already have started to have been nurtured as bonsai from specialist nurseries or go straight to spending $/£/€ on even older trees that may be called bonsai.
>>
>>2279115

I assume you're in Northerly latitudes? I keep mine on a north facing window (so basically no light at the moment) and water when I remember every 2-4 weeks and mine looks great.

Dont overwater and they don't often need to be repotted, but other than that they're incredibly tolerant plants with beautiful flowers this time of year.
>>

There's a sickly but surprisingly tough Salix fragilis 'Bullata' that I'd like to kill in a way that leaves its trunk intact. I know about cutting a ring of bark off the trunk, but are there other nifty ways apart from using a store-bought herbicides to kill it where it stands? I'm not opposed to using a herbicide, though, just kind of cheap and weighing my options.
>>
>>2279438

By the way, the tree is old but it's fairly small, somewhere around three metres tall.

Girdling will be your cheapest and possibly most effective method. You have to cut deeper than just the bark, enough to cut clean through the phloem. If you do two separate cuts a few inches apart that each go all the way around the trunk it should kill it.

As far as ways that leave the trunk completely intact, you could see about finding a bark spray herbicide, but I don't know if they sell those in homeowner friendly packaging.

I've a few questions, total beginner with plants.

I bought this hot chili plant around two weeks ago, but it started showing some sprouting only in last couple days, is it a good sign?

In the picture you can see some of the sprouts, they're attached to a branch that I accidentally broke when I brought the plant home (so 2 weeks ago). Of all places, they had to grow on the only broken branch. Will they start dying?

I haven't given it much water because it was too cold and I thought it could damage the roots so I gave it a little over time (maybe 3 liters over the past 2 weeks in total). How often do you think should I water it and how much water is enough?

I keep the plant indoors when there's no sun outside, since it was being kept in a greenhouse at the store where I bought it, I wrapped the branches with translucent plastic bags to recreate the same environment, I've removed them today since it was getting really messy (mold and dead leaves). Was it a good idea or did it just cause damage to the plant? it did lose a lot of leaves after all, though I wonder if it's related to the change of season since it's almost winter.

I got a Candy Corn aloe vera from a nursery a couple months back, it did amazing, constantly creating pups, then some time last week it just suddenly stopped being good at all and the leaves just all shriveled up and started completely dehydrating no matter how much I watered it, I tried repotting it but it still just kept dying so I snipped it really far back everywhere, feels horrible. anyone else have this problem?

Hello lads. My room has one large window, but it points north. The only light is indirect (reflected from the white house across the street).
I bought one plant, but it didn't like the lack of sunlight and I put it in the living room in a window (which points south) and its doing very well now. What kind of plant do you recommend to have for my room?
>>
>>2279928
Chill man, most plants thrive in comfy loving and not overprotective envoirments.
Sprouting is a very good sign, it means it's growing which is the opposite of dying.
The branch might be broken, it doesn't mean it's dead. If the branch is still green (and specially if it's sprouting) it means it's alive. It can even be brown and alive, you have to scratch.
In general I think you should water it more but dont go fucking psycho on it. Overwatering is the #1 killing cause in begginners.

Glad to know, I really want to see it live through winter. I knew it wasn't a good time for hot chili plants but I wanted to try it anyway.

yeah sorry about that, the phone's cam is pretty bad, I'd take another photo but I moved the plant inside since the sun is already down, photos get even worse with artificial lighting. I don't get it, the soil looks dry as fuck on top and if you finger it, you can feel it is moist but not completely wet or anything. Maybe it's drainage? Overexhaustion? Small pot? Roots have rotten?

Probably nutrient deficiency. chlorosis of old leaves while new leaves look okay is a good signifier of a lack of magnesium and nitrogen (as they are non-mobile nutrients).

Dionaea like being crammed toghether, so yes, you can keep them in the same pot. For substrate I like dry sphagnum moss the most.

Cephalotus are hard to take care of and not rewarding at all. Slow growing, small and with ineffective traps.

Nepenthes really depends on the species, some are really easy like ventrata or extremely hard like rajah.

>Should have posted in here a week ago, but I'm dumb and didn't check the catalogue

Hey guys, I need some help/advice on transplanting.

I have a small peace lilly plant in a ceramic pot that I need to transplant. Problem is, the top of the pot only has a somewhat small opening, and I honestly never expected the thing to live this long because I usually kill every plant I touch.

I am most likely going to have to break the pot to get it out, but I want to know how to transplant without sending the thing into shock, or killing it. This is the first plant that's ever lived this long and I REALLY don't want to kill it.

It is winter in CA right now, but I have the plant inside 24/7 and the temperature inside doesn't drop much. Will it matter if I transplant it right now, or should I wait till spring and just keep watering?

If it's an alata I'm pretty sure it's actually a ventrata (ventricosa x alata). They label them incorrectly always. Pretty easy plant.

Well for dry sphagnum I mean dehydrated, you rehydrate it and keep it moist. These are my plants, yes, the one in the pic is a Red Piranha, I use live sphagnum because I live in a very moist area. I feed them and I discovered they lose a lot of color if they are regularly feed, but grow much faster too.

Hey /plant/, i'm in need of help.
I'm planning on conducting a kind of experiment, a miniature garden/'world' in a bottle. a layer of soil, a plant, plenty of moisture, ensuring that i have some bacteria in there that can break down dead leaves and shit like that.

But i don't know which plant to use. the bottle isn't big, scarcely one liter's worth of space, if that matters.
I'm pretty far north, so it gets cold here, and i am planning on having it by my window. gets down to -10c here on occasion, so it'd have to be a pretty hardy plant. it doesn't need to be a fast grower or anything. any ideas?

Hey guys, I'm looking for tips, tricks, and input on what I'm about to do. I bought some Japanese Maple seeds online and am intending to plant them soon. From what I've read, you pretty much have to put them in dirt and then put them in the refrigerator for 3 months. Is there any way to speed that process up? Have any of you guys ever grown Japanese maples before? I think growing them from seeds will be more rewarding, and I was going to try and make them into bonsai trees. If I fuck up and they just keep getting bigger that's fine too, I'll plant them outside somewhere that they will do well (I think live in Zone 8).

Anyway just looking for input and advice, thanks.

Is it feasible to keep a potted fir/pine/spruce/whatever and bring it in for Christmas each year rather than
>nasty looking fake trees
>buying a real tree just to throw it out a month later
How big a pot would a 5-6 foot evergreen need?
>>
>>2285341
Buying disposable real trees isn't bad, because they are grown for that purpose, and in the years leading up to harvest, they provide oxygen that otherwise wouldn't be provided they weren't grown at all, and they lock in carbon. Christmas tree are collected by most cities on certain dates, then they are made into mulch for gardens.

Hmmmn, I think I will try growing my own pine tree from pinecones in the forest! When it gets too big for my apartment I'll haul it out to the woods and plant it, repeat!
>>
>>2272102
Maybe it's the dryness. I found that tropical plants did well on the bathroom's window sill, back when I had a sunny bathroom and kept tropical plants.
>>
>>2278520
I used to work in a green house and we had ceiling fans that was constantly on.
>>
>>2285337
His reason still holds up. If it bothers in any way to wait 3 months for it to sprout, you might not have the patience needed for this project
>>
>>2285349
A live tree would be putting oxygen into the air year round.
There's also a convenience factor I'm after and my boyfriend is more open to this than cut trees each year.

Would a 10 gallon pot be big enough for a dwarf Alberta spruce?
>>
>>2285349
>Hmmmn, I think I will try growing my own pine tree from pinecones in the forest! When it gets too big for my apartment I'll haul it out to the woods and plant it, repeat!

If kept in a small pot, and pruned, couldn't you essentially make a 7 foot bonsai?

It sounds like you can keep one inside for a limited time and put it back outside until next year. I'd image you have to be careful with decorations to avoid hurting the leaves too much.

Hey, I got two you trees recently a willow and a cherry, the nursery used a courier service to get them to me. The problem is only the willow was still potted, the cherry has all its roots exposed with no soil around it. If I had to guess it was probably idiot couriers that did that. Is this bad for the tree? IF I get it in soil ASAP, can the damage be averted?

I'm going away on vacation, how do I keep my plants watered while I'm away? Last time I paid a roommate to water them I came back to them all dried out and one nearly completely dead, so I really don't want to rely on people. They are just small potted plants, I feel like the bottle idea would drown them.

Pic related, my one plant just started growing sprouts months after the last drought that nearly killed it. I'm worried it won't survive another one so soon.

Depends, how cold it's outside? They should b able to survive until -10°C (don't make me use imperial pls)

Anyway look for fridge dormancy tutorials, I did it once and everything went fine, it's not hard.
>>
>>2291547
It's currently around 1~ degree celsius outside.
As far as I can tell the forecast doesn't say anything about -11 or such things, the toughest temperature is around -8 or so.
>>
>>2291550
Fuck it says snow for next week but only -1 degree
>>
Nah,fuck google's forecast.
It says -15 and fucking snow.
>>
>>2291550
Jesus lmao they'll be perfectly fine. Their natural habitat will occasionally freeze over so 1C is nothing
That being said, I would recommend using the fridge for this dormancy. Your plant is very frail, and if it snows too much, the stress can kill it
>>
>>2291560
So just put it in the fridge as it is,right?
>>
>>2291561
Take it otside the soil, wrap it in moist tissues, add a bit of copper-free fungicide (I like Compo/Bayer's) and store it in a ziploc bag inside your fridge for 3 months.
>>
>>2291564
that sounds like an awful lot of hassle.

If you plan to start a shroom ecosystem, then sure...
Yeah I know shouldn't sound like a smartass when I too failed to winter my first Dionaea back in 2015, haven't bothered with that species since, might give it another try this year.
Last time it went below -10°C here was in Feb 2012, all winters have been milder since then, so maybe planting it somewhere in the garden permanently might actually work better than potted. Most challenging part is probably keeping the soil wet throughout summer while at the same time giving it a place in full sun

What I forgot to mention: cut the dead leaves and let the bag open like once a week for one hour. The tissue has to be just slightly moist, not soaked. Dry sphagnum moss will work better but can be hard to find.
