New to /plant/ I got 6 baby spider plants to help out with indoor air quality. I picked up a 10" succulent planter (10x5x5) to start them off in. How dense should I let the roots get before transplanting?

Managed to fix the dormacy thing.
Turns out the house has a room that is around 5°C at noon and significantly colder at night.
Now I just have to break some ice and melt it.

im in zone 7 i bought the venus fly trap from walmart left in outside New Jersey. It did amazing. Started getting colder and dying back but growing the new foliage. So cold it immediately started growing out of the dormancy it started. Now its not doing so hot because its not summer and not dormant. Is it possible it will go back dormant if i put it outside. yes its snowing

VFTs can struggle under high power fluorescent arrays. They need direct, unfiltered sunlight which means either a greenhouse with no shade cloth or sitting outside on your patio. Growing indoors may lead to the plant appearing as if it were doing fine for a few months - years, but it will drastically decline

I took it inside bc i didnt think it would survive the winter outside. And i wasn't very familiar with Venus fly traps. But now it's growing inside and not doing to well bc i don't have enough light, heat humidty. Do you think it will go back to dormant if it's already started to regrow but not doing so well. DO NOT use the basement. It will die. I can guarantee it. Try the fridge method, and wait until early march to wake it back up, and during the growing season, be gentle with it. VFTs can go without 1 or 2 dormancies, but will be severely set back during the following growing season.

Is it normal for Nepenthes to grow basals before vining?

Yeah, nothing unusual at all. Some species do it more than others, but basals during the rosette stage are nothing to worry about. I don't have a good photo to show it, but my platychila's currently doing it.

I just moved into a new apartment and this thing was left behind. Can it be saved or is it too far gone? Can anyone identify what it is? I don't know much about plants but I know some species don't like getting a lot of water so I don't want to over-water it if it's one of those.

Also can anyone suggest some sturdy plants I can buy to spruce up my balcony that can survive well in all kinds of weather? Also looking for some indoor plant suggestions. I'm thinking of getting some spidergrass for my room and the living room.

So I got this S. leucophylla around august as one of the last orders lee's botanical gardens sent out before his site got hacked

It arrived as a rootball with the snipped stem in the pic, new growth started at the base around a month after I planted it in

Since then it's pretty much stopped completely with browning on the tips of the new growths...What do? First time keeping sarracenia's ever, pretty spooked I might kill it

If you're new, I recommend getting a small and common plant. The only collector level plant that is resillient against abuse is like N. robcantleyi... and that costs over 100 USD for a good sized plant. If you want sarracenia, purpurea is a good bet. It's hardy, and idiot proof. Lecophylla maybe but it likes very cold winters. Flava is good too. Nepenthes hybrids are your best bet for a beginner. Ventrata, miranda, lady luck will be your best bets. Easier species include maxima, ventricosa, alata, truncata, veitchii, ramispina (slow grower) and things like that

That's... not how it should work. If you've never even tried out a pitcher plant (nor can differentiate/decide between the radically different genera), then the last thing you want to do is piss money at a rare and difficult plant. You have to walk before you can run, just like any hobby.

Hi Anon I have a hobby of finding plants people do not want and bringing them back to life. The first thing I do is cut off anything that is dead, next I clean out the pot and check to see if the soil smells stinky, if it is stinky I know that its prob root rot. I will get new soil and make sure that the plants pot is cleaned out very well so that any bacteria from the soil is gone. When I water I add oregano oil to the plant diluted with water the oregano helps kill off any fungus or bugs living on the plant while not harming the plant. I also recommend a bigger pot because mint tends to want to take over, more space may encourage it to grow. Lastly when it comes to watering I recommend doing it once every three days or at least until the soil is dried out, that way the oregano will have a larger affect and will help cure the root rot. Keep the plant in an area that gets lots of light in the morning and then shade in the afternoon, some plants like the heat but mint will wilt. Hope this helps Anon happy gardening.

Can somebody please help me?
I didn't plant anything on my garden, i just started watering it so that the dust would settle down, but these plants started to grow.

Anyone knows what kind of plants they are? Should i remove them? I've been thinking about planting beans here and i'm not sure if i want them sucking the nutrients out of the soil

Yes. Funny story I had a neighbor who got me to come over once because they said they were having issues in their garden when I got there they had six pumpkin vines in a 3 feet space and said they thought pumpkins grew vertically with the support of only their vines.

It got a huge crack in the trunk and is in danger of falling. The tree is older than I am. I'm actually very sad.

Suggestions of what to do with the space? It's at the bottom of a hill, so the area floods sometimes, but it will be full sun when the tree is gone.

Hard and weeping willows love water, and thrive in occasionally flooded areas. They will also soak up a lot of the water as well.
Personally I would find out what grows best in your area. Your states DNR should offer a free tree giveaway in the spring, look in to that. These will be mainly trees native to your area.
If you want something ornamental or fruit bearing then check with local green houses for what grows good in your area.
Some trees excel in certain areas compared to others that will also grow in your zone. Your local arborists and gardeners can help you, as well as just driving around and looking for something you like.
I mean, you loved a fucking mulberry so it's not like your standards are that high. You should have an easy time picking a decent tree.
Of course another option is to leave the mulberry stump, and let the suckers grow a whole new shitty ass mulberry tree.

Aside from the fact birds eat the fruit and then splatter purple shit everywhere, (which happens with all fruit bearing trees and bushes honestly) my problem is more personal.
I had about 600' of overgrown fence row I needed to take out on my property. This job could have easily been done by myself with just my tractor and chainsaw. Unfortunately nobody has touched this land in about 15 years and mulberry trees have taken over the whole damn thing. A mulberrys root system is extensive, making it impossible to pull stumps. Once the tree is cut down suckers erupt every couple feet so once you start the job you better finish. I cleared my fence row out only after borrowing a bobcat and having a stump grinder take a five foot swath along the old fence row. 600' of eating dust and grinding mulberry roots. I've graded the ground, seeded for grass, and still have the little bastards popping up even after the great mulberry holocaust.
So again fuck mulberry trees.

Though some super healthy plants produce pigment (red cabbage, etc) to reflect away undesired colors. like how red is for stems and buds, but to a cabbage head, it needs no red, not until summer heat, with pollenators in abundance.

Its a mimosa pudica. I've had it since november.
The plant itself has three branches and the reddening is only happening in one of them, the one growing the most.
It could be sun overexposure but its winter and it barely gets 3 hours of direct sunlight every day. The window is facing the south-east.
In last thread I posted my concerns, the leaves turned yellow and it was because of lacl of nitrogen. I put some fertilizer (maybe too much but it was dying quick and I panicked). I think its been a feew weeks and it has done nothing but grow quick and strong.
The pot is pretty small to be honest, but this plant is so sensitive I am afraid of repotting.

To be more specific (i had to google this) the stems are actually light green, just like the pianna, the red is happening in the petiole.

Also, since the fertilizer-growth it also started growing buds.

Is this a problem? Is there an easy way to remove the stones or some chemicals i could throw at the garden to decompose them?

Has anyone here heard of or have done "pickle jar plants"?

My grandma used to have dozens of pickle jars filled with plants. There was a whole bunch of different kinds of plants inside of them but all of filled out the entire jar. She had sticks and rocks in most of them along with the dirt. The plants would climb around these sticks and rocks. A few of them would flower. Ever time I went over there they would look slightly different from growing.

I think I need this in my life right now. Has anyone heard of this?

I have one question about VFT. I got bored of mine (bought last summer), so I gave it to my gf so she could have it in her office. Once the reverse osmosis water I gave her was spent, she just continued watering with tap water.
Tap water here is without chlorine and pretty low on all minerals. I told her it would prolly soon die if she didn't get some proper water for it. Now it has been half a year or so, and the VFT is still fine, growing new big traps all through winter.
It's an a 50/50 perlite/unfertilized spagnum mix and black plastic pot with a white metal pot over it to prevent heat to the roots.

Is it normal for plants to grow back with brownish/yellowish tinged leaves after a hard pruning? Or did I prune too much? It's happening to my mint, parsley and some petunias. The stalks and leaves are also smaller/thinner after a large prune.

I have already looked up a little bit about aloe vera, I just want to know, how do I take care of it? Is this pot big enough to hold it, or do I need to get another eventually?
How do I know when the plant is going to have another little plant sprout, and how do you remove it and plant it on its own safely? I read aloe vera will reproduce on its own?

The photo and its lighting makes the brown sports look much worse than they actually are in peson, the plant is actually quite green and good looking, but will those brown spots go away?

Lastly, how often do I water? I haven't watered it yet, as the soil I put in the pot with it was already damp when it came out of the bag

While there is a slight benifit, it really pales in comparison to a simple proper ventilation regime (just open two windows at opposite ends of the room for a few minutes, once-twice a day)

Also, move that thing as close to the next window as possible, even there there's just about enough light
And it being a succulent, you can water less than most others, if the top soil is dry you can even wait an extra day or two. But then always water thoroughly, not just a few drops every day

Aphids, the major threat they pose is that they reproduce really fast.
Mix 1/3 alcohol, 2/3 water and some drops of dish soap and spray it on them.

Well I didn't exactly receive it as a cutting, but considering the state it came in I had to turn it into one - it was literally just a vine offshoot with a section of gnarled old vine included as 'roots'. It's recovered very nicely and is putting out strong waxy leaves now, so at least it's survived whatever ordeal it's been through. Must be cool to have local friends who are equally experienced growers anyway!

It's a bromeliad. They are super easy to care for. Minimal light, keep water in the 'bowl' of the plant where it cups.

In a little while, that pretty bloom will turn brown and shrivel up. It only blooms once in a life time and you'll have to cut it off.

The plant will then bud 'pups' or offspring. Ours is now about two years old and has budded several.

While I'm here, does the all-mighty /plant/ have any recommendations for an indoor palm? Girlfriend wants a 3-5ft palm-looking real tree to live in the corner of our living room... plenty of light in that corner which I figure is good. I'd like one that doesn't get too wide, as our floor space is a bit tight. It doesn't need to flower, but some interesting patterns/colours on the leaves wouldn't hurt. I woundnt mind pruning/trimming every year or so to keep it small, but I obviously don't want bonsai levels of care.

Do this >>2301909 also look in the substrate for eggs. You have to be very constant with these fuckers and spray the plant even if they are all dead because they always come back from some unseen egg. Just keep sparying it for some weeks after they are gone.

i just spray painted lowes buckets green on the outside. They are already dark and the green adds to it. They have lids also that are easy to cut holes into to hang cups

Asking this here - because im sometime surprised at the knowledge on 4chan.

I'm a fairly experienced carnivorous plant grower (pings,cephs,tropical sundews mostly) both outdoor and indoors including under lights in a terrarium. I'm interested in starting to grow orchids and was wondering what a good place to start might be?

Currently I only have a standard supermarket unknown species sitting on a window sill.

There are a surprising amount of nice orchids on eBay (usually not in flower, mind) at reasonable prices. I picked up a handful of assorted fancy orchids there last year, nice Phals and Maxillaria, round about £10-15 each ($13-20 or something). Now they're happily growing amongst my neps, no flowers yet though (I always forget to fertilise enough).

If you're experienced with high-drainage, high-humidity, cool-night tropicals then orchids should be a welcoming venture.

/plant/, i am in DESPERATE NEED OF HELP

i'm >>2303099 and i planted some bean plants in my backyard

today i was looking at them and saw some ants on them, just standing still. I thought it was weird so i took a few pictures to ask here what was going on.

After i looked at the pictures, i saw some insects smaller than the ants and i was absolutely terrified! These small mongrels are surely destroying my plants and i don't know what they are or what to do


Please, what can i do to aid my plants?

I also think they're infected with some sort of fungus. Some of the leaves have some weird white dots in them.

Okay, i did some research and found out these niggers were actually aphids.

I mixed some water and detergent i used to wash my dishes and washed the plant with it.

The aphids and ants fell, but some weird dots stayed on the plant. I think they were eggs. Do you guys want me to post the pictures i took?

I just rubbed the plant with a little stone i found in the garden and they all fell. I checked and it was the only plant around with aphids. Hopefully i won't ever see them again.

Do you guys have any tips on fighting off the ants though? I really hate these critters now.

Dots were dried up aphid poop. Aphids do not lay eggs, they have live birth.
The ants were there because they actually tend to and farm the aphids, herding them around to tasty plants or away from harm.

Does anyone know how to deal with vitrification in plant tissue culture? Almost all of my plantlets are completely clear and I'd really rather them not be dead.

Well a better term is probably hyperhydricity. Basically the cells have absorbed too much water and something happened to their chloroplasts. A scientific article said that it can be fixed by bottom cooling, which brings the water back into the media rather than on the sides of the container thus lowering the humidity so that the plants can dry out. I think they are not dead yet, but they will not function or grow until I fix it. Which sucks when I work 4-6 days a week(out of town) and I'm really trying to get a plant breeding business going, but the only plants I can leave alone that long are cacti. I would've been able to deal with this problem a lot sooner had I not been at work, but what can you do?

Sounds like pretty much anything that doesn't flower much would work well. So most of the succulents or Carnivorous plants mentioned ITT would likely be great choices.

Does anyone here has experience with this kind of soil? I've been reading about cactus and succulents and came across a few variants of this kind of soil as the best possible for this kind of plant. It's usually made with pine bark, turface and gravel. I'm just a little suspicious because it doesn't look like dirt or sand or anything, just poorply crushed rocks and stuff. But maybe I'm wrong?

What species of cacti/succulents are you growing and what kind of climate are you growing them in? Outdoors or indoors? If you're wondering whether cacti can grow in mixes like that look for a pdf called 'the soil hexalogue'. If you aren't a hobbyist you won't likely need/want to grow it in such a rough mix.
