Holy hell I hate typing on mobile

Smaller angelfish is an absolute asshole to the larger one. The larger one is now scared to the point that she's been hiding all day. I thought she was injured, but she seemed fine and I managed to coax her out by feeding her and chasing the asshole fish away with my hand. Now that she's eaten, she's back to her hiding spot.

The only tank I could conceivably move the asshole into is one with another asshole angelfish. I don't want to get rid of him if it can be avoided, but I do have a LFS that will probably take him as a last resort.

Any ideas of what I can do to calm this dickbag down so he stops picking on my girl so hard? Maybe isolate him for a few hours and rearrange the tank?

I sunk a cut open crescent shaped piece of cucumber for my albino pleco catfish and ghost shrimp to enjoy (the tetras seem to like nibbling at pieces that go floating as well)

This is the first time I've done this

The water when I woke up this morning is murky

I have a filter running in the tank and did a partial water change without removing the cucumber because they're still enjoying it

Will this cucumber water be of any harm? I can do another partial water change tomorrow if needed after removing the piece of cucumber

You can try Tetra SafeStart or API QyuckStart. They have fairly good reputations for speeding the process along. You can also put some of the water from changing the tub into the tank to feed the bacteria.
I wouldn't suggest putting him in the tank until it's cycled, though. I went through the same thing with mine and her gills would start curling anytime the nitrites started getting high, which happened pretty quickly.

Im looking for some inspiration. My tank needs something that isnt too skittish. Something that is active. Only problem is it needs to be large enough not to get fucked by my dwarf snakeheads but still relatively small. I have angelfish and bosemani in a seperate tank and dont feel like they would fit in this one. A fish around 10cm is preferred but im out of ideas.

Rainbowfish, maybe? They're boisterous, but not very skittish. Same with larger botiid loaches, eg clowns. Depends on how big your tank is.
I don't have any experience with snakeheads, so I can't be completely confident making suggestions, but hopefully that at least gives you somewhere to start.

what you have sounds like a bacterial bloom.
The bacteria themselves aren't generally harmful, but they do consume all the oxygen in the tank and can suffocate your fish.

The cheap treatment is cleaning your fucking tank (including the rotting cucumber) and doing water changes.

the more permanent solution is cleaning your fucking tank (including the rotting cucumber) and installing a UV sterilizer at a flow rate capable of killing bacteria in a single pass.

How long is "a while" and how big is the tank?
If you want to "make sure it's ready" just put some kind of ammonia in it (eg fish food), wait a day, then take some water from it to the pet store to have it tested for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Levels should be 0, 0, >0 respectively.
Don't buy fish you don't want just to test your tank out.

Hey /aq/,

Did my first ever water test today. 30 gallon, organic soil mix, pea gravel. Plants: Staurogyne repens, Rotala rotundifolia, Vallisneria sp. (local from a creek, Florida). One long bubbler stone, no filter.

pH 7.6, ammonia 0.25 ppm, nitrites 5.0 ppm, nitrates 0.0 ppm.

I got the Vallisneria from a friend's tank, along with a bit of water. We're expecting that I got some of the nitrifying bacteria as well. So, is it normal for me to have low ammonia, high nitrites and low nitrates? Does this just mean it's still cycling?

I don't want a filter. This will eventually be a big grass shrimp tank (once the cycling is done and plants are more established)

Yeah the pool filter sand was really good. I wish I could found some darker stuff, but it washed really well and it settles pretty fast. Keeps most of my plants rooted except for the damn dwarf baby tears.

if you haven't already researched this aquascaping style, it's called Iwagumi. The main rules are that you choose one "mother" stone that is significantly larger than the rest, that you always use an odd number of stones, and that you arrange them using the golden ratio or "rule of thirds" (pic related) the idea is that you arrange the stones with the center of the arrangement roughly in the center of one of the sections or on one of the lines. Your stones are well spaced, but I would recommend finding a larger stone to put in the place of one of them, surrounding it with smaller stones, and creating a smaller arrangement in the place where you have the other stone. As for plants you can obviously see from your pic that you only use carpeting plants such as hairgrass (eleocharis acicularis or parvula) or Micranthemum monte carlo. Hope this helps!

I've used this one with a USB extension cable. I bent a paperclip to hook it onto the tank trim. It works better than I would have expected (6-8F cooler on a 20 long), but I have to top off the tank a lot more often when I'm using it, due to evaporation.
If you search "clip fan" you can find some cheap ones at department stores. You can also try rigging up a desktop computer fan, but then you have to screw with power supplies.
Honestly, if your tank is staying at or below 82, there's no dire need to screw with the temp. The water bottle method works okay, but it causes a rapid(ish) drop in temp for about two hours (for a 2 liter bottle) followed by the temperature increasing again. It's also fuck ugly.

What do you mean by this? Do you want native fish? There are several that might work, but I'm not exactly well-versed in endemic Florida fauna.
Lowest maintenance 5-10 gallon tank you can do is inverts-only (shrimp) or a betta. Certain killifish are nearly or just as low maintenance as bettas, but they're harder to find.

A few of my guppy endler hybrids stuck in the filter intake. One of my cherry barbs sitting at top. Betta that was getting better is now getting fin rot out of nowhere while an ich out break is happening. I'm dosing the best all natural cure along with 86 degree heat and good aeration. Did an emergency water change with twice the prime but my most sensitive fish aren't even upset or showing any signs of sickness. Goes to show even us "pros" (been doing fish for 10 years now) have problems that we don't catch right away.

I have one of those aquafarm tanks, but no pump. I put some java moss and baby ferns in to grow, but do you think this will be able to house a shrimp colony? I was thinking shrimp and guppies, but I don't know if the lack of a pump will be trouble. If anything I'll just put a betta in it. The moss clump is probably enough for both shrimp and fry to hide in, I think.

Fish randomly dying. Healthy cherry barb died, betta on death bed looking like overnight fin rot in half of its body, 5 guppies die, and on top of that I've been treating ich for over a week and still no changes. Even more fish are showing signs. Test read 0, 0, 5. Tank size is a 30 long and I over filter and moderately planted. Things like this make me want to give up fish even though I keep everything in good condition ;_;

fin rot is traditionally treated with a broad-spectrum antibiotic or cultured and stained to find out what type of bacteria are present and then treated with targeted antibiotics.

in both cases the treatment is carried out in a quarantine tank to avoid destroying the biofilter and cycling the tank from scratch with sick fish in it.

either process is presumably beyond your abilities and would certainly cost more than just replacing the sick animal with one that's not sick.

though most infections are caused by stress, usually from poor husbandry. So buying more fish will presumably result in the same outcome at some point.

Melafix is a questionable additive, it's about as effect as putting a tiny dose of vinegar in your tank because vinegar has some antibiotic qualities in concentrated doses. I.e., while melaleuca oil does inhibit bacterial growth it also kills fish at any concentration that kills bacteria.

so its benefits as an antimicrobial are probably just pretend. It does have the real effect of reducing oxygen in the water, though it's also reported to calm fish. Of course all of the purported benefits are ascribed by the company that manufactures it.

anon's good things she heard about it are likely true, but most likely other actions- or more importantly inactions- on the part of the users caused the successful outcome.

fish tend to get better on their own if you give them clean water and then don't fuck with them.

Yes I did, I also read that very long explanation of what both melafix, and primafix contain. I guess my nitrates should be lower so I will do a water change. While the tea tree oil doesn't seem harmful, it does seem to alleviate small issues for some. Nitrates *usually* aren't the problem. They have to go extremely high extremely fast to trigger illness.

more common problems are overfeeding, improper temperatures, mulm releasing ammonia, chlorine or chloramine in the water, or a dead biofilter or uncycled tank.

I can't identify what specifically is causing problems for you without knowing a whole lot more about your tank and parameters.

it is also possible that your water quality is fine and the fish is stressed by other factors such as tankmates or just plain old age.

honestly on feeding I don't know how much is enough there are a total of 5 albino corys and 1 SA bumblee, I generally feed them the hikari sinking wafers, is 1 wafer per fish normal? it is possible to overstock an aquarium with bacteria, then overfeeding would show 0 ammonia, elevated nitrate, and reduced O2.

that would likely affect all of your fish though. In your case where you have plants and only one fish is in trouble I'd look at behavior. If the other fish are picking on the sick one or driving it away that's a very likely cause. This often presents with fin rot because the other fish may be nipping his fins.

if that's the problem there is no cure that will last aside from moving the affected fish. Even this doesn't usually fix the problem though since the aggressor(s) will just find another fish to peck to death. And another and on and on.

If you don't notice any bullying then it may just be a random infection for reasons we can't identify. That happens too.

Odd part is I keep my parameters stable. No signs of parasites and just noticed ich is under control. None of the cherry barbs had it. I feel like my tank is pretty bare.. I can't think of anything good to add. I got a big root with lots of branches but it still floats so its not added yet. Im hoping it helps to make it less dull.
