Turkey Fish Edition, Mk. IV

Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size
-parameters
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

Smaller angelfish is an absolute asshole to the larger one. The larger one is now scared to the point that she's been hiding all day. I thought she was injured, but she seemed fine and I managed to coax her out by feeding her and chasing the asshole fish away with my hand. Now that she's eaten, she's back to her hiding spot.

The only tank I could conceivably move the asshole into is one with another asshole angelfish. I don't want to get rid of him if it can be avoided, but I do have a LFS that will probably take him as a last resort.

Any ideas of what I can do to calm this dickbag down so he stops picking on my girl so hard? Maybe isolate him for a few hours and rearrange the tank?

I sunk a cut open crescent shaped piece of cucumber for my albino pleco catfish and ghost shrimp to enjoy (the tetras seem to like nibbling at pieces that go floating as well)

This is the first time I've done this

The water when I woke up this morning is murky

I have a filter running in the tank and did a partial water change without removing the cucumber because they're still enjoying it

Will this cucumber water be of any harm? I can do another partial water change tomorrow if needed after removing the piece of cucumber

Do you mean a Fluval HOB filter? You can stick the sponge behind the filter intake if you don't want to put it in the filter box.

>>2265227
Do you have fish in the tank already?
>>
>>2265232
>>2265250
If your fish die during a fish in cycle you're either new, don't care enough to do water changes, or keeping sensitive fish. Even when I first started and didn't know shit about fish all 10 of neon tetra lived. Bought tank, filter, decorations, and fish all at once.
>>
>>2265267
No, it's for my axolotl. He's been in a tub of water that gets daily changes because his old tank was unlivable.
>>
>>2265267
No, I guess I mean the AquaClear filter. I think I can just put my sponge in that one, I'm just wondering if I need to do anything else.
>>
>>2265273
You can try Tetra SafeStart or API QyuckStart. They have fairly good reputations for speeding the process along. You can also put some of the water from changing the tub into the tank to feed the bacteria.
I wouldn't suggest putting him in the tank until it's cycled, though. I went through the same thing with mine and her gills would start curling anytime the nitrites started getting high, which happened pretty quickly.

>>2265284
Same thing. If you're just changing the filter that's sufficient.

Im looking for some inspiration. My tank needs something that isnt too skittish. Something that is active. Only problem is it needs to be large enough not to get fucked by my dwarf snakeheads but still relatively small. I have angelfish and bosemani in a seperate tank and dont feel like they would fit in this one. A fish around 10cm is preferred but im out of ideas.
>>
>>2265313
I would murder an entire family for a snakehead. Closest we can get here are bowfin but they get huge.
>>

>>
>>2265313
Rainbowfish, maybe? They're boisterous, but not very skittish. Same with larger botiid loaches, eg clowns. Depends on how big your tank is.
I don't have any experience with snakeheads, so I can't be completely confident making suggestions, but hopefully that at least gives you somewhere to start.
>>
>Got a small 10 gallon tank for free
>Want to get a predator fish
I'm pretty much limited to a dwarf pufferfish, I think.
I wanted a Piranha for it, but the size is a problem. Would a 5-6inch Piranha be alright for it for a few months whilst I save for a bigger tank?
I do like the look of blood parrot fish despite not being a predator but those fuckers get big pretty quickly.
Any suggestions?
>>
>>2265365
wait until you get a bigger tank?
I know it hurts anon, but stay strong
>>
>>2265048
cucumbers don't normally cloud your water.

what you have sounds like a bacterial bloom.
The bacteria themselves aren't generally harmful, but they do consume all the oxygen in the tank and can suffocate your fish.

The cheap treatment is cleaning your fucking tank (including the rotting cucumber) and doing water changes.

the more permanent solution is cleaning your fucking tank (including the rotting cucumber) and installing a UV sterilizer at a flow rate capable of killing bacteria in a single pass.

it's not a strawman, he's saying your personal experience is anecdote and carries no weight.

I'd add that doing water changes during a cycle prolongs the bitch up to a year.

I don't really care what you do with your fish though. IMO the fishless cycle pretends fish can suffer and feel pain, which is just silly.

but if it keeps the ignorami happy, I say let them do what they want.

>>
>>2265382
fish in method is very easy. Even a caveman could do it. Small water changes every few days with a water conditioner.
>>
>>2265389
>Small water changes every few days with a water conditioner.
yes, as I said that slows the cycle by months, maybe over a year.

the idea of the cycle is to feed ammonia to bacteria.

water changes and conditioners remove ammonia so the bacteria don't get enough.

I realize you're probably incapable of learning, but whatever.
>>
>>2265390

I was supposed to get a cryptocoryne, so that's a bummer. Finally some minima floating plant, wh r re should I put this stuff?
>>
>>2265394
so explain to me the mechanics of how water changes and water conditioner slows down the cycle.

let's hear your brilliance.

for the record, 5 bosemanis in a 75g, your tank never cycled. You probably read 0 ammonia and nitrite at 5 months because they never produced enough to measure.

You can do something shittily for your entire life. It doesn't make you any good at it. No matter how desperately you try to shill your anecdotal evidence, it's still a logical fallacy and your word will always be worthless.
>>
>>2265427
How long is "a while" and how big is the tank?
If you want to "make sure it's ready" just put some kind of ammonia in it (eg fish food), wait a day, then take some water from it to the pet store to have it tested for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Levels should be 0, 0, >0 respectively.
Don't buy fish you don't want just to test your tank out.

Hey /aq/,

Did my first ever water test today. 30 gallon, organic soil mix, pea gravel. Plants: Staurogyne repens, Rotala rotundifolia, Vallisneria sp. (local from a creek, Florida). One long bubbler stone, no filter.

pH 7.6, ammonia 0.25 ppm, nitrites 5.0 ppm, nitrates 0.0 ppm.

I got the Vallisneria from a friend's tank, along with a bit of water. We're expecting that I got some of the nitrifying bacteria as well. So, is it normal for me to have low ammonia, high nitrites and low nitrates? Does this just mean it's still cycling?

I don't want a filter. This will eventually be a big grass shrimp tank (once the cycling is done and plants are more established)

just freeze a water bottle and drop it in the tank closed, the ice will cool it. If you want fill it with tank water then freeze, and put in tank opened when frozen and it will eventually just equalize with the tank.

if you haven't already researched this aquascaping style, it's called Iwagumi. The main rules are that you choose one "mother" stone that is significantly larger than the rest, that you always use an odd number of stones, and that you arrange them using the golden ratio or "rule of thirds" (pic related) the idea is that you arrange the stones with the center of the arrangement roughly in the center of one of the sections or on one of the lines. Your stones are well spaced, but I would recommend finding a larger stone to put in the place of one of them, surrounding it with smaller stones, and creating a smaller arrangement in the place where you have the other stone. As for plants you can obviously see from your pic that you only use carpeting plants such as hairgrass (eleocharis acicularis or parvula) or Micranthemum monte carlo. Hope this helps!

>>
>>2265979
I've used this one with a USB extension cable. I bent a paperclip to hook it onto the tank trim. It works better than I would have expected (6-8F cooler on a 20 long), but I have to top off the tank a lot more often when I'm using it, due to evaporation.
If you search "clip fan" you can find some cheap ones at department stores. You can also try rigging up a desktop computer fan, but then you have to screw with power supplies.
Honestly, if your tank is staying at or below 82, there's no dire need to screw with the temp. The water bottle method works okay, but it causes a rapid(ish) drop in temp for about two hours (for a 2 liter bottle) followed by the temperature increasing again. It's also fuck ugly.

What do you mean by this? Do you want native fish? There are several that might work, but I'm not exactly well-versed in endemic Florida fauna.
Lowest maintenance 5-10 gallon tank you can do is inverts-only (shrimp) or a betta. Certain killifish are nearly or just as low maintenance as bettas, but they're harder to find.

I have one of those aquafarm tanks, but no pump. I put some java moss and baby ferns in to grow, but do you think this will be able to house a shrimp colony? I was thinking shrimp and guppies, but I don't know if the lack of a pump will be trouble. If anything I'll just put a betta in it. The moss clump is probably enough for both shrimp and fry to hide in, I think.

Fish randomly dying. Healthy cherry barb died, betta on death bed looking like overnight fin rot in half of its body, 5 guppies die, and on top of that I've been treating ich for over a week and still no changes. I don't into saltwater, but as far as I understand it live coral is very pricey, and dead coral/dry rock is cheap. live coral will eventually colonize your dead coral, but it takes a while.
>>
>>2266701
he doesn't use melafix, he just shills it in every thread.

>>2266707
yeah, dry rock is just calcareous rock and dead coral. You can use your Jamaican stuff so long as it's not agatized fossil coral.

dry rock is just the calcareous substrate you're going to infect with organisms from live rock. It needs to be clean, porous, calcareous, and not full of dead animals.

then don't go around discrediting others, when you are not even informed enough to offer a better solution.
>>
>>2266717
I didn't say I couldn't, I said the fish is cheaper than the cure.

fin rot is traditionally treated with a broad-spectrum antibiotic or cultured and stained to find out what type of bacteria are present and then treated with targeted antibiotics.

in both cases the treatment is carried out in a quarantine tank to avoid destroying the biofilter and cycling the tank from scratch with sick fish in it.

either process is presumably beyond your abilities and would certainly cost more than just replacing the sick animal with one that's not sick.

though most infections are caused by stress, usually from poor husbandry. So buying more fish will presumably result in the same outcome at some point.

Melafix is a questionable additive, it's about as effect as putting a tiny dose of vinegar in your tank because vinegar has some antibiotic qualities in concentrated doses. I.e., while melaleuca oil does inhibit bacterial growth it also kills fish at any concentration that kills bacteria.

so its benefits as an antimicrobial are probably just pretend. It does have the real effect of reducing oxygen in the water, though it's also reported to calm fish. Of course all of the purported benefits are ascribed by the company that manufactures it.

anon's good things she heard about it are likely true, but most likely other actions- or more importantly inactions- on the part of the users caused the successful outcome.

fish tend to get better on their own if you give them clean water and then don't fuck with them.

then set up a QT and treat with a broad spectrum antibiotic.

or if you prefer, dose your tank with melafix and wait a week.

he'll either get better or die, either way you've succeeded. Just be aware the melafix has nothing to do with your success.
>>
>>2266724
I have a 5 gallon bucket, could I put sand in the bottom and use it as a quarantine tank? Also is melafix a broad spectrum antibiotic or would i need something else. could do frequent water changes
>>
>>2266701
Either or. You'll use less if you isolate the cory, but it won't hurt anything in the tank if you dose the whole tank.

>>2266719
>burden of proof anon returns for the sake of not backing up any of his claims
>>
>>2266726
most likely the fish will die from the stress of being moved to an improper QT.

I personally would do nothing. Fish that get sick often die. Providing better water quality to prevent disease is much better than trying to cure it.

Melafix is not biologically active at any concentration your fish can survive. It isn't an antibiotic in normal doses.

>>2266728
>for the sake of not backing up any of his claims
you're welcome to review any and all of the Melafix literature. Or get on Wikipedia and read up on its ingredient. I'm only here to get you to question the snake oil (or tea tree oil if you prefer). You're free to ignore me if you like. But that doesn't change the fact that it does nothing.
>>
>>2266728
for example:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tea_tree_oil

you will notice that the ingredient of Melafix is in fact poisonous in any concentration that would kill bacteria. It's an effective method of killing fish, or indeed humans if ingested.

it also becomes more toxic when exposed to light, presumably a problem in aquaria.

Melafix gets around this by using extremely small doses of the poison. While this diluted dose won't kill you or your fish, it also doesn't kill bacteria. Indeed there's no clinical evidence that melaleuca oil is any better at killing bacteria than vinegar or lemon juice is. And of course the same problem applies to those substances- any concentration of vinegar or lemon juice that kills bacteria will also kill fish.

the main difference is that melaleuca oil is quite a bit more toxic than vinegar or lemon juice....

>>

almost all fish illnesses are caused by poor water quality.

I've read many anecdotes of melafix curing (usually betta) fins very quickly. I've heard more good things about melafix than about any other medication, which is the only reason I throw it out there as a suggestion, only after asking about water quality. nitrates =/= dirty water. if you have any facts to back up your claims, I'd definitely be interested in hearing them.

treating even cheap freshwater fish as disposable excuses a lot of poor care, and everyone would benefit from not treating cheap fish as disposable. I would never suggest for possible poor husbandry to be the first approach to sick fish.

the stress of trying to treat the problem will most likely kill the animal.

Yes I did, I also read that very long explanation of what both melafix, and primafix contain. I guess my nitrates should be lower so I will do a water change. While the tea tree oil doesn't seem harmful, it does seem to alleviate small issues for some. I don't know the cost so I will consider it when I get some sand, im sure they will appreciate the softer substrate, is my amount of nitrates an unhealthy level?
>>
>>2266741
Nitrates *usually* aren't the problem. They have to go extremely high extremely fast to trigger illness.

more common problems are overfeeding, improper temperatures, mulm releasing ammonia, chlorine or chloramine in the water, or a dead biofilter or uncycled tank.

I can't identify what specifically is causing problems for you without knowing a whole lot more about your tank and parameters.

it is also possible that your water quality is fine and the fish is stressed by other factors such as tankmates or just plain old age.

I recently added plants.

ammonia is 0, nitirites 0 nitrates are around 20ppm

honestly on feeding I don't know how much is enough there are a total of 5 albino corys and 1 SA bumblee, I generally feed them the hikari sinking wafers, is 1 wafer per fish normal? I usually feed them a few a day, but the injured fish doesn't go for it. I also have brine shrimp and blood worms that they love. I fear overfeeding may be my problem but I don't know how much is enough.

7x white clouds
4x neon tetras
1x SA bumblebee
3-4x amano shrimp
1x mystery snail

just for refrence in regards to feeding
>>
>>2266747
usually if you're overfeeding you'll read some ammonia.

it is possible to overstock an aquarium with bacteria, then overfeeding would show 0 ammonia, elevated nitrate, and reduced O2.

that would likely affect all of your fish though. In your case where you have plants and only one fish is in trouble I'd look at behavior. If the other fish are picking on the sick one or driving it away that's a very likely cause. This often presents with fin rot because the other fish may be nipping his fins.

if that's the problem there is no cure that will last aside from moving the affected fish. Even this doesn't usually fix the problem though since the aggressor(s) will just find another fish to peck to death. And another and on and on.

If you don't notice any bullying then it may just be a random infection for reasons we can't identify. That happens too.

>cajeput- the main ingredient- should work just fine against gram positive bacteria and external infections.
it does nothing at the recommended dose.

you're recommending something that doesn't work. I don't care how safe it is
you're trying to get people to spend their money on something that doesn't work.

fuck you for that.
maybe you can talk some anons into spending on prayer mats and homeopathy too. Idiot.

jeez, take it easy buddy.
>>
>>2267029
well if they just died on you clearly it wasnt healthy
>>
>>2267087
Odd part is I keep my parameters stable. No signs of parasites and just noticed ich is under control. None of the cherry barbs had it. The rest are healthy and the other healthy ones that died just stop swimming out of nowhere and fell to the bottom. Despite my otos being the most sensitive fish they're completely fine.
>>
>>2267089
>None of the cherry barbs had it
it usually infests the gills where you won't see it.

by the time it shows up on the skin many of your fish are as good as dead from the ich in their gills.
>>
>>2267090
We will see how it goes. Been dosing meds and heat. If tank fails well at least I'll have plants.
>>
>>2267090
I've never had a fish die of ich...

>>2267089
you might want to pick up either a heater that goes to 86 or a med with malachite green in it. are the fish new or is there a bully in there or something?
>>
>>2267094
I have meds with malachite but I have shrimp and snails also. No new fish or bully fish. They newest fish have been in the tank for 5 months. I really need to go out and get a hospital tank when I get paid and new heaters. I just felt my heater and the light is on but it's cool to the touch. Temp still 84 though.

Anyone wanna recommend me a Freshwater fish store around the general LA area that has the best selection of nano fish?

Well meds say Victoria green which I heard is just malachite
>>

>>2267110
looks like victoria and malachite green are the same.

getting a new heater would definitely be the easiest way to get rid of the ich, but your fish might die by then. I'm guessing you have plants and can't add salt. do you have a 5 gal bucket or a bin you can use as a hospital tank?

>>
>>2265365
Wtf do people even mean when they say "predator fish"? The VAST majority of fish in the hobby will predate small invertebrates just like a pea puffer. They're nothing special in that regard.
Also, if you were considering a pirhana because you wanted "muh big bad predator fish," you are grossly misinformed about them. See >>2262134.
If, for whatever reason, you just want an aggressive fish, get a 20 long and a pair of convict cichlids.
>>
>>2267296
Not by a year (in freshwater, at least), but I tried doing that with a 10 gallon and gave up after 2 months and no nitrates. Moved the animals to a 5 gallon bucket temporarily to let the tank do its thing.
>>
>>2267492
Maybe put little rocks around them pretty much touching the stems so fish can't knock them up till they're rooted.
>>
>>2267497
>convict cichlids
>20 long
Kekaroo
>>
>>2267497
There's a difference between predatory fish and just fish who will eat whatever. I'm not going to get into it because even fish that eat only plants can be considered predators.
>>
>>2267495
Thanks. It's a bit messy because of the one asshole nerite keeps moving rocks around.
>>
>>2267511
I have a nerite and several mts that will move rocks. I was thinking maybe getting some of that plastic sewing grid and securing the Monte Carlo to it. Would that work? With like super glue or something.
>>

>>

>>
>>2267502
I've done several 10g tanks in 4-5 weeks, all of which I have done 50-70% water changes on when the ammonia and nitrites spike.

Hardly any of the good bacteria resides in the water itself, so water changes are only performed to dilute the current levels of ammonia/nitrite, or, in a cycled tank, nitrates.
>>
>>2267626
>Hardly any of the good bacteria resides in the water itself, so
removing bacteria isn't the mechanism that slows the cycle.

you need ammonia and nitrite to feed the beneficial bacteria. Removing it via water changes means it takes longer for them to colonize your tank.
>>
>>2267629
Yes this is why I pee in my tanks after every water change
