Inverts-that-arent-shrimp Edition, Mk. IV

Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size
-parameters
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

>Lethocerus americanus is a giant water bug in the family Belostomatidae, native to southern Canada and the United States.
>Commonly found in ponds, marshes, and on the edges of lakes and slow-moving streams, adults and larvae feed on other insects, small crustaceans (crabs/crayfish), tadpoles, snails, and small fish. The adult swims with the aid of its hind legs. A pair of front fore limbs is used for capturing and latching onto its intended prey, which it then injects with digestive toxins through a somewhat retractable proboscis much like that of a mosquito.

There's going to be a 50% off on all Freshwater fish and plants and 25% off on Marine fish, corals and invertebrates at Petco during the Black Friday Sale that lasts until November 26.

I worked a few overnights on Black Friday. My work brings in a shit ton of food and drinks. They tell everyone to save a certain section for night crew. The seasonal negros and white trash eat and drink everything besides the diet soda and pretzels. This year I might bring some heat.

Update on bluefin Killis:

The heat treatment I think has been doing well. Right now, the temp is 83 F and climbing. I turn off the heater over night because I don't trust it. I've been adding salt, and Ich Attack.
I don't think the diseases have been spreading, but I don't they're recovering as quickly. Some still have white spots, while others are physically looking 100%. I also don't think it has spread to other fish.

One killi had horrible tail Rot Fungus. Most of his tail was replaced with a bush of white fuzz, but after a water change, the fuzz is gone. And so is his tail, but I know he's going to make a full recovery.

Still, most of the bluefins will scratch on plants and shit and will occasionally do that "yawn" or gasp, so I know that they're still infected.

I'm disappointed a little though, the bluefins hide more than I thought, and they don't school. Only one ore two males have colored up too. They also haven't taken to flake food yet. Most other wild caught killies of mine ate that shit up straight from the get go. Bluefins seem just as happy nibblin' on algae or detritus on the rocks. I'll try to feed them bloodworms tomorrow.

Pic related.

Shit day made because of shit reasons for shit people.
>>
>>2262443
I'm so confused. are you talking about bringing a gun to work on black friday to stop "seasonal negros and white trash" from eating all the good snacks? how does one become a seasonal negro, seems like that would be a full-time thing.

>>2262450
I've heard great things about Melafix as a general cure all, so I'd definitely grab some of that for your fishy first aid arsenal. specific temp is really important for ich; at 83 it can still infect and reproduce, so make sure it gets up to 86 F for at least 10 days. I'm sure they'll stop hiding so much when they aren't so stressed.
>>
>>2262458
> seems like that would be a full-time thing.

> I'm sure they'll stop hiding so much when they aren't so stressed.
I sure hope so, they are so different compared to other killifish.

Yes. I want some tasty snacks for the shitty overnight shift. I have a Glock 19. That'll teach them all a lesson. I mean the seasonal employees. They hire anyone who applies from October to Christmas.

Hey mates, i'm in Chicago and heard about the petco sale. I live in a gay neighborhood so i don't have to worry about violence or anything. Does anyone have any good recommendations for someone looking to get into aquariums? I'm hoping i can get everything i need during the sale. I would like to have something with interesting fish and plants that are partly self-sufficient (of course i'll take care of it). Sorry if this post doesn't conform with the sticky, i'm new here. Also feel free to post links.

>>

even with everything half off you're probably not going to get anywhere with 40 bucks unless you want a
>betta

Also its generally not a good idea to buy everything you need all at once, there's a chance your fish will die because you didnt cycle the tank
>>
>>2262481
Would it be possible to start off only with plants and invertebrates, and then work my way up to fish. On their website tanks seem very expensive compared to other websites, is this normal or am i looking at the wrong thing?
>>
>>2262484
Petsmart is having a half off fish as well 27-28 and having sales on aquariums. Fish in cycles are fine. Even as a noob you can do it if you truly care. Just do frequent small water changes. Haven't had a fish die during a fish in cycle in 20 years.
>>
>>2262484
the sale doesnt start until the 19th
but yes you can go for plants and shrimp to start with
if you want to get it going right away though just dont buy too many fish and make sure you grab a bottle of safe-start and water conditioner
>>
>>2262494
Get some prime I would like to say. Good for the noobs.
>>
>>2262484
If you want to start out cheap you could go unheated until you have more money. Amano Shrimp (or Ghost Shrimp if you want to be really cheap) would both do fine in a room-temperature tank, as would most common plants.

Pretty much anything between 2.5 and 10 gallons is going to cost the same, around $80-100 with plants and fish.
http://www.petsmart.com/fish/supplies/aquariums-and-stands/aquariums/grreat-choice-aquarium-starter-kit-16825.html?var_id=36-16825 (Petco may have a competing kit, but make sure it has an incandescent light) with screw in CFLs (~$3) and pea gravel or sand (~$4) from Home Depot is going to be the cheapest way to start up that I know of. You'll also need water conditioner, small bottles of which are $3-5, and if you can find a 1 oz bottle of API Quick Start (pic), it costs about $4 and should help the tank cycle faster. A heater is about $8 on eBay, but there are a lot of fish and inverts that don't need one (most shrimp, white clouds, platies).

Hes so fluffy too bad its dead LOLZ

Got a new tank. How do i go about moving my current substrate, hardscape, plants and fish into it without needing weeks to cycle? It all needs to be done in one move as the new tank is gonna replace the old one in my living room.
>>
>>2262612
Grab plastic bin/bucket and fill with water. Add filter and critters.
Put plants somewhere, how and where depends on how delicate they are.
Drain tank.
Scoop your substrate into new tank.
Place a plate or something down onto the substrate so you have a place to pour in water without kicking up the substrate.
Add plants.
Move over filter.
Acclimate critters if you didn't reuse water.
>>
When I left I noticed white specs on my betta. Any all natural meds that won't fuck up my plants and inverts?
>>
>>2262612
what the other anon said, but make sure you start the heater and filter ASAP and have it running for a while. if the fish will be in the bucket for a few hours, you'll need an aerator. try and save as much of the water as you can.

It's a aquaclear power filter 5-20gallon filter. Also I must confess when I first setup the tank I put in root tabs to help the plants, but miss read the label and instead of putting single balls I put in whole pyramid chunks of these... did I fuck up?
>>
>>2262674
that's like the absolute bare minimum filtration tbqh. I'd definitely invest in either a canister or another aquaclear if you have the money. overfiltration is better than underfiltration for most tanks.

if you're the poster I'm thinking of, you've fertilized your tank with flourish and eco complete as well right? you shouldn't need root tabs with that substrate for a while- I think it says on the package. you're probably over fertilizing by a lot, but if the roots are okay I wouldn't worry about it too much. that would explain some of your algae issues though.
>>
>>2262499
Maybe and maybe. You can help your odds by having caves that the cories won't fit in and a lot of dense vegetation like moss.

Side note, a large group of conspecific for the cories would be a lot better than having a smattering of different species.
>>
>>2262680
OK I will pick up another filter this weekend, you think if I buy another of these I can just run both and that would be adequate? I don't have room for something that isn't a rang on the tank filter...

If you decide to get rid of them, Safeguard dog wormer apparently works beautifully, but you'll need a gram scale to measure out the dose (100mg/10gal of the small breed meds).

>>2262680
EcoComplete doesn't have any fertilizers in it. It has beneficial bacteria and a high CEC. The root tabs would be what it needs to work optimally.
And yeah, an AQ20 is pretty weak for a 20 gallon, but as long as he doesn't have ammonia or nitrites, a bigger filter isn't going to make much difference. The biomedia that they come with can handle a lot. Also, the gourami and guppies probably appreciate the gentler flow.
Not that it's ever bad to use heavier duty filtration, but it shouldn't be a prime issue in his case.
>>
>>2262698
I guess it's a good think I have no gouramis or guppies, in face the white cloud minnows may enjoy a bit more water flow yes?

Confusing you with someone else on here with a 20 long. Yes, white clouds do enjoy a bit more flow, and if it's no trouble to you, having two small filters is arguably even better than one bug one. AquaClear filters are good quality, but even they are known for conking out without notice, so having a spare is always a good thing, and running both simultaneously ensures the fish won't go without filtration in that event.
I'd go with an AquaClear 30 for your second one.
>>
>>2262715
I'll pick one up tomorrow, do you think it would be a good idea to mount both on one far end of the tank? They would then both be flowing in the same direction long ways to the other end, seems more realistic as a stream?

Three have died but I guess it's good I haven't been replacing them. I've found the albinos to be more fragile than the rest, not schooling as much and they were the first ones to die.

Thanks! I thought cories were dumb and peaceful and only ate non-moving bits of food on the bottom. They've only ever bugged my mystery snails by following them. I guess I'll move my breeding plans to another tank since I love my wiggly cories too much.

>>2262932
definitely not right, poor fish :(

>>2262998
maybe they were wild caught? I've always heard they're pretty hardy.
>>
>>2262971
It's not the bacteria in the water that matters, it's the nitrogen. If you have sink water with no nitrogen in it, it's going to kill all the bacteria in the filter media
>>
>>2263000
it won't hurt them, but it will raise GH, KH, and PH.

you could also add cuttlebone or sea shells.
>>
>>2263011
no, they don't starve that quickly. so long as you put the fish back in it's fine.

there are a few reasons why it's good to reuse some of the old tank water though, mainly so your fish don't go into pH shock.

I have a 110 gallon, what plants should I grow in there to sell and make a little money for more fish?
>>
>>2263026
Usually anything fast growing that are stems or moss
>>
>>2263026
light? substrate? co2?
>>
>>2263026
Whatever you can fit in there? What's your lighting? Do you dose ferts, co2?
>>
>>2263055
right, lighting I have 2 90 watt CFL bulbs, substrate is just pool filter sand, no co2. I could dose ferts if I need to. I'm sort've planning on filling it with java moss. The fish stores around here are always sold out.
>>
>>2263062
If you want to grow plants to sell, you're going to need a nutritious substrate, CO2, and better lighting.
Your best bet if you want to make side money is breed shrimp
>>
>>2263062
you'll need ferts for sure. java moss is popular as hell and kind of has a bad rep just because it's so common- but it also grows a bit slow (fast for a moss though).

I'd recommend tearing up your tank, putting down dirt or mineralized topsoil, covering it with your sand and then adding your plants. you'll want fertilizers if you're trying to grow them quickly.

I'll take a pic of my tank in a sec, it's a fairly low-tech planted monstrosity.

You shouldn't leave the fry in the box long term. Usually, you use one to let the female shit out babies and then prepare to relocate everything.

For angels, a lot of videos are on Youtube about it. Pretty common stuff.

Ah yeah, I've got a little tank of their own ready to go to...but when would you recommend moving them? Like, when will they be considered big enough to not get sucked up by the filter etc...

As for angels, I've watched a few videos but there are a lot of different methods and I was wondering if any /an/ons have had success more with one than another. The angel fry are a couple of days away from free swimming and the best the parents have done is get them to that point and then eat them...

The 125 gallon is 6ft by 18 in by 21 in, and they come with the stand, glass tops (I think), and T8 fluorescent lights.
Call the stores around you and see which ones have it in stock.

>>broke a 55 gallon tank
Damn, that sucks, senpai.
>>
>>2263513
you need a sponge for the filter intake. any chemical-free sponge is fine.

the best way to save fry is to have a heavily planted tank. plants provide shelter and microorganisms for them to eat.
>>
>>2263513
>Like, when will they be considered big enough to not get sucked up by the filter etc...
Once they start swimming. Find a sponge and cover the intake of your filter with said sponge.

As for your angels, this becomes the(one of) best parts of the aquarium hobby: Trial and error. Everyone can have a different experience, and stuff won't work every time. It's your job to find out what works.

Haven't owned fish in a really long time and I just wanted to know if I'm on the right track. Spent a month researching different fish and how to care for them. Set up the tank (10 gallon) a week ago and started the cycling process. Took a sample to the pet store and they said everything looked great. Bought three Sunburst Platy (1 male, 2 female) to start. Ultimately want to add a Betta and three Dwarf Otos. Does that all check out?
>>
>>2263590
one week isn't long enough for your tank to cycle, so hold off on adding any more fish. most cycles take around a month.

your stocklist looks pretty good, but know that platies can be nippy, and some bettas are aggressive to platies because of the similar size. personally I wouldn't add otos to any tank smaller than 20g since they like clean water and high flow, but if you do decide to get them make sure you have plenty of algae growth first. I'd consider shrimp or snails instead.
>>
>>2263595
Thanks! I'm not planning on adding any more for a while. I want to observe for a while and see if the platys are nippy. What kind of shrimp would you recommend and how many?

neocardinia shrimp or amanos. amanos are great for algae but are kind of expensive, neocardinia breed easy and eat algae and leftover food. I have cherry neocardinia shrimp and I love them! they have such a light bioload you can add as many as you want.

"Dwarf oto" is more or less synonymous with "oto." Some people just like saying dwarf at the beginning. The ones you see in most stores can be from a number of species that aren't easily distinguishable, but require identical care. Usually I see them sold as O. vittatus or O. affinis, so you can look those up if you're interested in care sheets.
To be blunt, though, there are a number of reasons not to get otos, especially for a ten gallon. All otos in the hobby are wild caught and shipped from South America, which is very hard on them. They have a reputation for adapting very poorly to new environments and refusing prepared food, eventually starving. Home aquariums don't come close to recreating their natural waters (see the above video) and it's difficult for (especially small) tanks to provide enough food natural food for them, making blanched vegetables often necessary. There's also no way you could ever have enough of them for them to display their natural schooling behavior.
youtu.be/EOK5stRPq1E

If you want a small, gentle bottom dweller, shrimp and snails are good, as the other anon mentioned. A small school of pygmy cories or a trio of moth catfish might also better suit that tank.

>>2263875
Does your city add chlormaines to the tap? Because if they do that isn't going to evaporate out of the water.
If you're only worries about chlorine and you only have narrow necked bottles for storage, I'd either boil it or use an airstone while letting it sit. Gas evaporates more quickly the more surface area you have, and bottles like that don't offer a whole lot.
>>
>>2263896
I was thinking of boiling it and leaving it in the sun for a while because apparently UV helps with removal of chloramines.

I live in a dorm in warsaw, so our water is as shitty as it gets. I'll probably invest in aquasafe or a similar product.
>>2263876
I'll just ask in my local shop what they use, it's a few blocks away so our parameters should be the same.
>>

>apparently UV helps with removal of chloramines
I believe that has to do with special purpose UV filters.

Most aquarium water conditioners will remove chlorine and chloramines, and neutralize heavy metals. They typically aren't that expensive. Most anons here like Seachem Prime, but Tetra Aquasafe will work just as well.
>>
>>2263908
yeah it's probably the safest method.
Do you know if conditioners usually get rid of copper traces? I'm setting up a 20l nano cube with cherry shrimp and I don't trust the pipes here.

It's always fun setting up aquariums in a new place. Especially when I'm used to pristine Swedish water.

this is where you fucked up. Living in a tiny town of 4k inhabitants at the top of vattern has it's pros. Our water from the tap is clean af, except that it's a bit low on calcium and I have to supplement my shrimp tanks with cuttlebone.

Could my pencilfish be wild-caught?

They don't come up to the surface to eat so it's really annoying as I have to wet the food above them so it sinks in front of their faces.

give it time. In the wild they mostly eat small organisms.

Been keeping planted tanks for a few years, but thinking of getting into corals. How much of the info carries over? I see them as almost like slow growing plants that need to be fed, and instead of planting in substrate it's planted on live rock.

you want to find topsoil with as few organics as possible. that stuff will definitely work, but there won't be much left after you sift it.

I added powdered clay and some organic fertilizer- normal garden stuff I had lying around.

There seems to be a lot of gunk in my intake (water bridge going to the sump) and I'm not sure if I should pull it out or not? Is this algae or what? Is it safe to have in there?
>>
>>2264105
it's algae and detritus. I'd pull it out, only because eventually it'll clog.

Recorded results from a fishless cycle using Tetra Safe Start, did no water changes, did not add any pure ammonia(except what's included in my tap water), waited 24 hours once I used a dechlorinator.
read Ammonia/Nitrites/Nitrates

Day 1:
>4?/?/?, pH 7.6+
>can't test once you've added safe start until 24-48 hours, i tested ammonia before the 24 and added safe start after 24.

Day 2:
>4.0/1.0-2.0/?

Day 3:
>4.0/?/?

Day 4:
>had work, didn't bother to test

Day 5:
>0.5/?/?

Day 6:
>0.2 ammonia
>nitrites were a bright violet color, i assume 2.0?
>? nitrates

Day 7(11/15/2016):
>0/0/0
>still unsure if it's legitimately cycled, added a mystery snail to check and to clean off the melting plants
>>
>>2264111
0/0/0 isn't cycled, you should be seeing some nitrates in there.
>>

>>
>>2264132
oh. I have no idea, I don't use safe start. you need to add some form of nitrogen though otherwise your bacteria will starve to death.

what's in safe start? just bacteria and some food?
>>
>>2264140
well you didn't have any idea because i was a retard here >>2264125

tetra safestart apparently has a "safe form" of ammonia and "bacteria"
it stops ammonia from being deadly, not sure if it stops nitrites/nitrates from being deadly as well
>>
My mystery snail is digging through my Eco-Complete, what is he trying to accomplish here?
>>
>>2264142
no I saw your update numbers. they look good, but good numbers doesn't always mean you have a cycled tank.

http://www.fishlore.com/fishforum/aquarium-nitrogen-cycle/58116-q-tetra-tetra-safestart.html

after reading this, I think you probably ran out of ammonia and starved your bacteria to death. you need to add fish (or something that will break down into ammonia) soon after adding safe start.

Speaking of shrimp, I stopped seeing babbies in my tank a while ago. Apparently planaria can and will eat shrimplets, so my numbers have been declining very slowly and I haven't been assed to go get dog wormer and measure out the right dose.
I'm also mostly stuck with medium-grade cherry shrimp instead of the red and blue rilis I started with because I never culled any of them. Ich bin ein schlecht Führer.

I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. Youre fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and thats just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in underwater diving, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little clever comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue.
