At what point does it become right to shoot your dog?

My dog is a German Shepherd/Labrador mix, who would've turned 14 in 2 months, but it's clear that this won't happen.

His hind legs have been weak for several months, and it very slowly got worse and worse, until 5 days ago when he suddenly really struggled to get up. He managed to do it, he got up his stairs and everything, but it was tough.
10 hours ago though, i was going to take him for what i thought was going to be his last walk in the woods, but when i got home to put on his leash there was no chance he'd get up, even though he tried. He must have fallen down the stairs and broken his front leg, he can't put weight on it, and if i move it he starts whining and seems to be in sharp pain.
Now he just lies there, unable to get to food or water by himself, wets and shits himself, and when left alone for maybe 30 minutes he starts barking.

I have to put him down, that's obvious, he doesn't deserve this. The problem is it's another 24 hours until the vet opens, and they won't do anything in weekends..
I don't know what to do, i don't want to shoot him because of the risks and how grotesque it is, but i don't want him to suffer through another night either..
He's not in pain when lying still, but that's not a life.

What do i do?
>>
>>2201860
You've got two choices, anon.

You can either shoot your dog, or wait until the vet opens and get them to kill him.

OH WAIT, YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT THE OPTIONS ARE.

So make your fucking choice, you cunt. We don't know anything about you, your dog, or your circumstance, and even if we had perfect information the choice would still be yours whether or not you listened to us anyway, so stop procrastinating and fucking decide.
>>
Get your dog to a vet and fix his leg. Maybe he needs a wheelchair too.
>>
>>2201860
>Rednecks
>>
Find an emergency vet. They are open on Sundays. I had one of mine put down on Christmas of all days a couple years ago because it just needed done. Most of the time e-vets cost a lot more than a regular vet but they didn't really charge much more to put my dog to sleep than a regular vet.
>>
>>2201860
Have you tried to take him to the vet to see what the issue is or are you just letting him get worse without at least seeing if there are more options?
>>
Get him robot legs

I'd say go for the gun. Do it while he's sleeping so that his last thoughts on Earth are sweet dreams instead of pain.
>>
I would only shoot a dog if he was in extreme pain and I had no access to a vet, and it would be incredibly difficult for me to do so.

Emergency vet clinics do euthanasia often. Go there.
>>
>>2202069
The bad thing about that picture is most people are taller than their dogs. Much taller. Look at how small the brain is; at a large downward angle it would completely miss the brain. You'd have to be more dog level

OP here.
Bonzo is now asleep. I managed to find a vet, it was quick and painless, and i was with him to his last breath.

I had him for more than half my entire life, and now everything seems empty and hollow, but at least he's no longer in pain.
>>
>>2202237
Take solace in the fact that you took him to a vet where he could die peacefully next to you instead of fucking shooting him in the head.

14 isn't bad at all for a GSD and it doesn't sound like he went through any unnecessary suffering.

It'll be alright mate.

Sparky here died 3 years ago aged 13.5. I was 25 at the time and we'd had him from a puppy, so like you and Bonzo we had grown up together.

I miss him. But I know we gave him a good life and I was lucky he actually grew old before he got ill. Also I'm glad I was there with him at the end.

You can say the same for Bonzo (long, good life, together at the end). It sucks to lose him but you can't ask for much more than that.

>>
>>2203349
Yeah, especially an older dog.
Dogs get as attached to its owner as the owner is to it. Doubly so if it has spent years and years with you.

Though i guess that is only if you're a good dog owner, which you definitely aren't if you fucking abandon it with total strangers in its last years of life.
>>
>>2203892
>getting attached to a dog
It's a dumb fucking animal. What are you, a woman?
>>
>>2203899
I know you're baiting, but the fact that there are people who thinks like this pisses me off.
Why even get a dog in the first place with that mindset?
>>
>>2203901
Because I want a guard dog. Unlike you, I don't have autism; thus, I can form meaningful relationships with other human beings. I don't need some dumb animal to make me feel loved or wanted. That's just fucking pathetic bro.
>>
>>2204036
It sounds like you do have autism, which is why you can't form a bond with a dog. I mean, it's a dog. It's so easy to bond to.

I think Bonzo knew it was the end well before i found a vet. He was calm when i was around, and he even fell asleep in my lap. He just wanted me to be around him. He wasn't playful or anything, he was just very calm.
Dogs tend to know when the time is up you know. That's why you see them hide away to die in a hole and stuff.

>>2204713
Yeah i like it too.
I didn't name him though. A friend of my mother had him and didn't want him, so either someone took him or he'd be put to sleep. I think he was around 5 or 6 months when we got him.

that's what everyone thinks but you won't end up seeing the new pet as a replacement most likely

You can't rush grieving anon. Although it can help, some may feel it as a betrayal to their lost friend. I do believe that adopting again later is the best way to honor them though, when I think about the love that my old dog would have never received if I never got her, I felt that I owed it to her to help out another dog. Lots of them need love too.

I can sort of see where you're coming from, but on the other hand, think of the mess. Shooting your dog isn't clean at all, and to be honest i think it would fuck me up for good seeing my best friend like that, with blood gushing out. And think of the risks, all it takes is one quick movement from the dog and suddenly you're way off the mark, putting it in a great deal of pain. I agree with the other anons in this thread, getting put to sleep at your side is probably the best way for them to go.
Ofc it still hurts, i don't think i'll ever get over that, feeling his breath getting weaker and weaker. I just wanted to wake him up and go home.

Dude, i'm so sorry.
It feels terrible to do it. Feeling his breath and heartbeat getting weaker and weaker is one of the most painful things i've gone through, and the moment it all stopped i panicked. It was surreal, i just wanted to pick him up and bring him home. When i picked him up, and he was completely limp, i nearly shut down completely.

It a horrible experience, and while the time and love i gave him certainly helps, it still leaves an open wound in you, and i don't think it will ever close completely. That's the price you pay for loving an animal.

I hope you're okay anon, and i hope you'll recover soon. Savour your last moments together and know it's the only thing you can do. Good luck.

I know that feeling. It's been years by now but I remember after my dog was put down, I tried to pick up her body and carry her towards her grave we were giving her. But she felt so unnaturally limp. It was too distressing and I was unable to deal with it, so my dad had to carry her instead.

You made the right choice anon. It's better to let them pass while they're still happy, it would have been worse on both of you to try to keep him going.
>Small little storytime.
My grandparents had a kelpie that was as old as me, I used to come by every afternoon and take her for walks around town as they couldn't. I had to move to the other side of the country when I was 10 but every time I came to visit she would always be there to welcome me and I would take her for another walk. I stopped visiting during high school and came back once I was 17 and found out she was still there. The grandparents didn't want to put her to sleep because of some 'moral' bullshit, she was nearly blind, could barely walk and couldn't eat solids. I took her for once last walk to the vets, carried her most of the way. She was wagging her tail until she didn't have the energy.
Point is that aging is rough on dogs, especially active breeds, it's better for them to die happy.

I knew he was in a lot of pain on Saturday as he kept meowing at me when he is usually a very quiet cat, so I'm just glad he's not suffering anymore. RIP Elvis, my brother and best friend.

The same thing happened to me, but I was a teenager and my parents had left me with our (already struggling) dog for a week. After the first day he couldn't stand up and I just had to watch him slowly die, I couldn't do anything.

Be really glad he didn't suffer not being able to stand for long, it's torture to witness.

Our dog turned 17 this week and is in a similar position (can't move, pisses and shits self, has to be brought food and water), it doesn't seem like he's in pain but his backlegs barely work anymore (common problem with his breed). By this point we had hoped he would have just gone quietly in his sleep but we have no idea how much longer he'll hang on.

Should we just babysit him until he finally passes on? I doubt we'd be able to take him to a vet and even then money is tight and I've heard euthanasia is expensive.

Copfag here. I had to put down a dog today.
More people need to be jailed for animal neglect and abuse.
Someone called about a dog that looked dead in the woods. He was breathing but not moving, muzzle covered in flies.

The cheap cunts were concerned enough to call the cops but God forbid they take it to the vet.

They asked what I was going to do with it. I explained they had the option to take it to have it put down. They said fuck that. So I told them I'd be taking it out to a field to shoot it and they freak "why would you shoot it! Oh my God that's awful"

The lower class is fucking awful, pets are just things to them. So many strays in my city.
>>
>>2242699
Euthanasia goes by pound generally, and unless $60 (med-large size dog) is very expensive to you, that is usually all it costs JUST for euthanasia. What costs a lot is the disposal; cremation services and, if you wanted it, the ashes back. That's generally$100+ alone. Call up vets for euthanasia estimates, but let them know you want to take the body back (the vast majority of people don't take the body back). You can also call shelters and ask if they preform low cost euthanasia or know a place that does. Check rules for your city; I know in places like Montreal you can't dispose (ie bury) a dog yourself, so it might be considered illegal to take the body back with you. As far as I know, no American city has such regulations.

So, I guess this thread is as good as any for this.

So, my mom and I discovered that our old dog, who is somewhere around 12-14 yo and is only a bit bigger than a chihuahua, has a kidney stone that is the size of a half-dollar. (We only found out because the poor thing was yelping like mad suddenly.)

Naturally, there is no fucking way he is going to pass that thing, so we have been thinking of having him put to sleep within a week or so, since at his age, he is. quite frankly, pushing it already and surgery would be both costly for us, and the recovery likely painful for him..

The thing is that despite being fairly old, our dog doesn't really act as old or broken down as a lot of older dogs I have interacted with. He gets around fine, despite previous leg injuries, and is plenty attentive and all that, so I'm getting torn up thinking that we are cutting things short for him. It doesn't help that while on his doggie pain killers, you really couldn't tell there was something wrong with him.

I guess we are already pretty set on having him put down and cremated and all that, but just can't shake this feeling of guilt over this whole thing. Are we making the right choice for him?
>>
>>2245543
You're cutting it short, but it's the best decision in this scenario. Sucks balls, but it's what you gotta do.
>>
>>2245543
The main rule is that when the bad days outnumber the good ones, the animal's quality of life has declined to the point where euthanasia is the most merciful thing to do. I'm not completely sure if you've reached that point yet, but if your dog has been yelping in pain and needs painkillers, I think it's good that you're prepared to face the inevitable in the near future.

As for feeling guilty: guilt is a normal feeling when dealing with a pet's death. People feel guilty for not being able to prevent a fatal accident, or for failing to notice symptoms of an illness sooner, or for being unable to offer their pet some costly treatment. And then there's the guilt for having to make the decision to put down an animal you love. Everyone's gonna have to agonize over it; some people fear they did it too soon and cut the pet's life short for no reason, and some will worry that they waited too long and let the animal suffer through some hellish pain that could've been avoided.
There will probably be guilt either way. You'll just have to learn to overcome it, go through the mourning process, and remember the good times with your dog.

Just remember anon, that the great thing about death is that life always has to come before it. You'll get years worth of happiness, though there's no such thing as happiness which will last forever. So, in the end, it's better to savour the good and the bad of it all, and see them for what they're worth.

So, stay strong anon!

Smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger ones. It probably has a few good years left, at least if it recovers from the kidney stone.

My cat had a bladder infection, for which she received meds. But not much later she had it again and her kidneys were affected too. When her blood work came back badly on Thursday, we scheduled an appointment to put her down for Friday. But she didn't made it, when I was holding her for a last time she started to meow loudly, and couldn't stand on her feet anymore. She had a few convulsions and had trouble catching a breath before she passed. I'm not sure if she suffered greatly, or if it would've helped if she had the syringe earlier. I've had her for 14 years and buried her in the garden 2 days ago.

>>2266697
You mean his weakening legs?
No, because it was just the years catching up with him. I first noticed it years ago, when he started to struggle to jump into the back of the car when we went for a drive.
And he was a mix of German Shepherd and Labrador, 2 breeds prone to hip displasia, so i knew what it was, and i was just waiting for it. Performing the kind of surgery to fix that on a 11+ year old dog doesn't seem right to me, even if he was my very best friend in the world. And it isn't like he was crippled at that time, we regularly went for short walks at his own pace, and this summer we went swimming.

Dress up in a dog costume and have your mother take you to the vet for euthanizing.

Doggo is already in such pain it can move, and you going to end his stay on earth with a unimaginably loud startling sound right next to his ears, a blinding flash right in his eyes, and hope, hope!, that he doesn't spend his last seconds quivering and convulsing wondering wtf his owner of some many years just did to him, while his life pulses away through his wound with his last heartbeats.

Sorry to heart about your doggo and may he reat in peace, but I just don't see guns as a multi use tool like that just because it ends life.

It's not about death, it's about the peaceful (or not) seconds that come just before it, the last thing he feels, his last taste of the experience of life.

Guns are not a multi use tool.

A well placed shot would ensure a quick and painless death. Add to the fact that it is not even hard to do, and if the animal is suffering and beyond hope then why are you prolonging its agony?
Just because you don't have the stones to do something hard, doesn't mean everyone else can't.
Trying to validate your weakness by claiming it's more humane is even more ridiculous.
>inb4 you should always take it too da vet.
No shit, of course having a professional evaluate the situation is always going to be the best way. However it's not always the case. Some people don't live in a bubble of conveince and have the luxury of walking a few blocks to the vet.

Actually, we just took him in this morning.
He was doing okay on the painkillers, but last night, he was crying through the night and couldn't lay down without getting up and yelping and all that. He was refusing to poop even more than he usually did, probably due to how cold it has gotten and the fact that going is probably some sort of painful due to the stone.

We realized that we put it off far longer than we should have and that today would be the day.

We stayed there through the process. It was rough, especially on my mom.

Fucking hell, man. Golden Retrievers are the best. Next month it's going to be 2 years since mine passed away. She had a good life and we were with her til the end.

The pain never gets easier, we just get more numb.
>>
>>2202237
I had the same thing happen to me OP. My dad had to put our Labrador down after she found snail poison and couldn't throw up, it was quick and painless. I was 18 and I had known her since I was 2, just know that the time you spent with your dog was good and that you have fond memories of it.
>>
>>2202253
You've got to be the one to put your dog down. Their whole world is you and you've got to realize that.
>>
my dog died this afternoon. The vet was suppose to come and put her down at 10am but was unfortunately late so she died in my arms. Feels bad man ive had this dog for 16 years and grew up with this dam pooch. Went downstairs earlier and thought she was there, then i remembered what happened.
>>
I had to put mine down last week. Now I've gotten to the point where I don't wake up angry or crying but I absolutely hate being at home. There's a very noticeable emptiness. She didn't get to open her Christmas present. I had to open it myself.

I've got another one and shes sweet and wonderful but shes not wonderful in the same ways the one that got euthanized was. She gets on my nerves sometimes.

>>
>>2274554
Should have used a hammer, and don't do it if you are shaking and are liable to make it worse.

Neighbour of mine used to have two dogs. When the first was dying they took it to the vet, dunno what went wrong with the shot but the dog didn't die quick and my neighbours were really broken up about it. When the second dog was dying, they took it out to their farm in rural Ontario and put it down with one of their hunting guns.

I would prefer being put down by a gun myself, straight to the brain stem. I don't think there are any drugs that would do the trick quick and painless. Especially when I'm old and sick and my circulatory system isn't good anymore - maybe that's what went wrong with the first dog.
>>
This thread is so sad. He was really beautiful, that's for sure. Seems like he was an ultimate pal too.

Keep it together, OP. All you can do is cherish the time spent with him. I hope you're doing alright.

I honestly think this is why my cat died over Christmas. He'd been sick for a long time, but was doing really really well for several months. Even the day before I was leaving he was active and eating and just being a seemingly happy old cat. Then three days after I had to leave him at the boarding kennel they called me and told be he'd died.

We've always put down our own animals. We believe it's our responsibility, our burden. I was raised to deal with things myself, not call somebody to fix every little thing for me. It's a much better ending than some stranger poking the dog with a needle.
You take your dog for one last walk, even if you have to carry them. You enjoy the day together, give him that good cut of meat, and say your goodbyes.

whoa anon

I take my dog to a kennel that also does daycare. they're great. they have a vet on site, they separate dogs by size/temperament, they know how to administer medications, etc.

there are definitely some bad ones out there but there are good ones too. you just gotta look. and not be in the south.

Well. I guess this is a remembrance thread now.

RIP to all the cats I had when I was a child who got run over bc my parents were shit
RIP to Angel my kitty who was given Tylenol by my fucking retard mother
RIP to Kiba my Great Pyrenees mix who was left outside to die of heat stroke
RIP to all the dogs my parents dropped off in the country
RIP to all the cats my parents took away who never saw a shelter
RIP to the two parakeets my shit mother let loose by being ignorant

I've had a long time to cope and start to feel again and now I finally am able to love the pets I have.

I will spoil the pets I have bc of them. I will feed them good food and take them to vets. I will let them sleep with me in my bed and keep them indoors bc outside is so cruel.

Lilo my half GSD, Opal my gray mutt kitty, and Khaleesi my tortoiseshell kitty. As well as my snakies who will never get too hot or too cold and eat every week.

When we first went to them for my dog before she'd passed we asked to see their kennel set up and they took us back and let us see what they'd did, and they had a nice big play area and little smaller places for older dogs or dogs that didn't get on well and such, plenty of room to move and everything. And we always see the workers walking dogs around the neighborhood in their scrubs too.

Since then they actually moved to a larger building, and converted the entire old vet building into one huge kennel. Dogs got even more inside play room and all the cats had big 4'x5' three level cages to themselves. We'd gone to this vet since forever and they'd always taken good care of our little guys.

Most people don't want to see their beloved dog's head explode.
Practical but definitely traumatizing to do. You wouldn't be able to get that out of your head even if you knew it was painless/the right thing to do.

RIP Bonzo, I bet you were a tip top doggo.

All dogs go to heaven OP, your little buddy is up there chasing rabbits, eating all the food, and sleeping next to you on your bed for all eternity.

Be glad you didn't shoot him. I had to kill my goldfish once and honestly the sadness sticks - I can't imagine how sad it would be to have to shoot your good buddy of so long. There is not much harder than having to kill a best friend I think.

You did good.

Exact same scenario happened to my 18 year old Jack Russell, Molly. We put her down about a month ago. I had to talk a .22 rifle out of my dad's hands while my family was freaking out over it. I understand it's way more humane to do it that way then let her cry and suffer through the night but it seemed too harsh for my family. It's rough but I think it's the right thing to do. Whatever choice, he'll go peaceful. I'm sorry this happened to you.

OP here.
Now that the thread is getting close to an end, i'd like to thank you for all your kind words. You have truly helped me come to terms with this.

He was my very best friend for more than half my life, and the house hasn't felt like home since he died. I still instinctively look for him every morning. Waking up to see his silly old face was always nice.

My only regret is that i didn't take more pictures, and that i didn't get to take him on that last walk in the woods.

He had a very good life. Always playful and happy, even in his old age. He loved those pig toys, he was like a puppy in an old dogs body. He was a good boy.

I will always miss the old man. I don't know what i did to deserve him.

Sorry for the blogpost, it's just that the support has meant so much to me.

According to the bible , animals dont have souls but they have spirits. Spirits that are directly from God so when a dog dies his spirit returns to the Lord. Really a beautiful thing if you think about it.
