Sorry, I saw carnivorous plant and just assumed. But if I'm not mistaken, they're all from similar marshy climates. They're not going to like living in large rocks. All that to say, miracle grow will kill them too. The soil has far too many additive nutrients that'll fuck them up

These are my current windowsill babies. Took them outside for a quick photo-op. The King Henry VFT lives in an old high school ceramics project. I know it's not ideal living conditions for them, but I've been keeping on top of watering it and its growing really, really well. New heads sprout every couple of days, and are only getting bigger and farther from the base.

The cactus is the new guy. I don't really know what kind of cactus it is, but it looks nice and I'm enjoying looking at it.
>>
>>2178633
I have pic above in the peat they provided me at the plant store I bought it from a couple months ago. I bought a small bag of sol they said VFT's did well in and added it to fill the mug, but really you'd be fine without adding any perlite, from my experience at least. I don't know much about other carnivorous plants other than VFTs, but anecdotally mine's doing great.

Hello /plant/, I just had a quick question.

I inadvertently picked up a northern red oak (quercus rubra) tree when I was moving, and have finally made the decision to keep it. The sources I read said that you should expect your red oak seedlings to grow around 12-24 inches per year. However, this one is only about 7 or eight inches. Should I expect it to remain stunted in a small pot or will it become root bound and die?

Please ignore the sideways rosemary, and I'm planning to transplant the oak sapling soon.

>>2178657
It's very glazed. Inside and out.

Just as a heads up it helps a lot to mention where the plant is. It looks like it might be phytolacca americana, which Wikipedia states has "significant toxicity".

It seems to be it so it's a good thing that nothing bad has happened to her yet since i've taken the parts away from her when she does jt and she only chews and spits them out rather than eating it, i'll commence eradicating every trace of it from the yard even if it turns out not to have been pokeweed

What are some good, smaller terrarium plants?
I've just lately been getting into terrariums. I've made a small succulent one and am a bit more confident to make a slightly bigger one.
I've got a small maidenhair fern that hopefully will start getting healthier now that I'm nursing it in the glasshouse, I have a small african violet chick, and I was going to grab a small ground cover we have in the back yard, though I don't know what species it is. I was thinking maybe 3 or 4 plants, so I might need to come up with ideas for another 2 if my maidenhair doesn't come back from the dead.

The vase I have for it is an orb, about 20x20cm, I'd say. I bought it cheap from a dollar shop since I didn't want to invest much in a terrarium for my first, crappy try.

Anyone have any suggestions?
>>

Oh, and also, any tips for growing moss?
It's been raining non stop for the past month or two here, so there's tons around. I snagged some from the side of a footpath in my suburb and have stuck it in a chinese food container on some soil.
Is that enough? It's pretty moist, and I've been moving it onto the windowsill when the sun moves behind the trees in the afternoon.

Is there anything I need to know?

This is my ivy. I don't thing it's doing too great and I'm afraid it's getting a bit too much sunlight. However, there isn't any shade in my terrace.

Please grow a spine you cretin.

Anyway, does anyone have any experience with grow tents? An opportunity has arisen in which I might not have to sell all my Nepenthes, as a big basement grow tent could be an option in my new house. Any recommendations or info on how to set up automated hydrofogger type shit would be appreciated too.
>>

Alright, thank you.

And the only two nut-bearning trees near my mom's house are pignut hickory, (carya glabra), and the an oak tree that I'm not 100% sure of the species of. My best guess using Maryland's leaf guide ( http://dnr2.maryland.gov/wildlife/Documents/TreeGuide_Common-Broadleaf.pdf ) was red oak. What do you think it could be?
>>

>>2179097
Oh geez thanks guys. You almost made me think like I was making this shit up. If it's so hard to kill those plants can you actually point out how I'm managing to do that?
I'm watering them once every day since it looks dry after all the day on the sun and I try to stop before the water drops under.
They get around 8 hours of full sun and the next 4 of slim shade.
I humidify them during the evening once every two days.

Actually check whether your soil is dry or not by sticking your finger in it. Also, ivy is an outside plant. Leave it outside unless you have one of those cool indoor trellis thingies.
>>
>>2179071
prune the dead stems off ivy. check if it's dead by scratching the stem with your fingernail: if there's green underneath, it's still good.

I found a super brown ivy plant a while ago... only 1/3 of it made it, but it's finally starting to look good!

Yeah seeds are a little difficult to get hold of, certainly if you're not in the know or don't know the right channels. As anon above said, TF giveaways seem pretty great if you're in the US. Another safe bet is to wait on eBay until viable seed comes up, either hobbyist-made (will be fresh, but might be a shit hybrid) or wild-collected (cool but unethical). Only a couple of Indonesian sellers are trustworthy, hobbyist sellers you probably need to look at on a case-by-case basis. And keep in mind growing Nepenthes from seed is fuckin' SLOW - stuff I planted in Spring last year are barely reaching an inch across now. Only about 5-10% of everything is still alive at this point too (I'm still a bit shit), but what's left is a few very strong seedlings I can hopefully look at in a few years and be extremely proud of.

And regarding prices - what can I say, it's a bit of a rich man's hobby. As a general rule though, the more expensive a species is, the harder to keep and slower growing it is, so if you're a beginner you're not really missing out on the shit-hot attractive toothy stuff! There are boatloads of cheap easy hybrids courtesy of Borneo Exotics these days, I'm sure you'll find something you like that won't break the bank at all. Pic related is a solid example that took my fancy recently.

>>
>>2179254
Not particularly, I've been trying to gather as much information as I can though. How often should I be watering them? What's the best way to let them thrive indoors? If they even should be
>>
>>2179265
>Indoors
Well I'll give you a brief caresheet
>They are full sun plants, they need at least 4 hours of sunlight per day.
>They live in marshes, bogs, and swampy areas in general, so they dehydrate fast. The best way to water them is to keep them with a small dish of water under their pot, and refill it when the substrate is -almost- dry (never let them dry completely).
>They go through a dormancy period in winter never deprive them from it.
>They need low mineral content water (distilled, demineralized, osmotized, rain, etc) it has to be <80 ppm
>The ideal soil has to be something acidic and well drained. Non fertilized peat moss with quartz sand or perlite, live or dry sphagnum moss are the best ones for this plants.
>Never fertilize. That'd kill them.

About yours: It's lacking sunlight (you can tell because the new traps are very small) and also it's an all red, red varieties are slower and more sensitive to intense sunlight, so it'll take longer to adapt and old traps will get sunburn and die, but it'll grow new healthy ones if you follow my instructions.

Also don't play with the traps and if you want to feed it, do it with live insects the size of 1/3 of the trap's surface.
>>
>>2179271
I forgot to mention, in spring they'll start growing flower stems, they weaken them a lot, cut them up, because you don't want to be growing them from seed until you have some experience. If well treated, they'll clone themselves.

>>
>>2179271
Thank you much! can the four hours of sunlight be emulated by fluorescent light? I've got a "cool white" bulb that's supposedly the right color temp. And as for the water under the plant, should I repot it already? The lady I bought it from said not to for a year but that seemed a little off. Plus if I were to use the Petri dish under it i would need it reported anyway right?
>>
>>2179286
Agree with the carnivorous plant aspect, but with orchids it's a toss-up. I have found orchidsforum and orchidboard to be great. Orchidsforum is where a ton of specialist experts go to for some reason. They grow plants that no one else does. There are also specialists on some facebook groups. Most of the international community is very interesting if you can read in another language.

>>
>>2179302
Yes, I know people that use them (also you should use it for 14 per day), but if you keep it indoors remember the dormancy period. It can be done in the fridge, get some dry sphagnum, a zip bag and fungicide, hydrate de sphagnum mist, mist it with a bit of fungicide, wrap the vft roots with it and keep in the fridge (about 2-3ºC) for 3 months.

The substrate is dry sphagnum, doesn't look too spoiled. A petri dish won't harm the plant so you can let it be for now.

Just looking at those I would say it's maybe a chestnut oak; immature tree leaves are sometimes hard to identify because they haven't reached full size/mature shape. That being said, it's lobes are rounded and shallow enough I don't think it's a red oak. Seed can also travel ridiculously far sometimes so don't limit yourself to what's in your immediate neighborhood. I may also dig around in one of my ID books tomorrow if I remember and try to give you a more conclusive answer.

I'm going into my senior year in forestry so if anyone has any other tree related questions I could try to answer them, it would be a good learning exercise for me at least.

Something important to know with belladonnas is that they will throw a tantrum for 3 years if you move them. They don't like being disturbed at all, and will refuse to flower for 2-3 years if you divide or move them.

They can be moved if you keep a large clump of soil around the bulb while moving, but you may still get them sulking.

Anyone here know anything about Adenium obesum?
Mine's gone all spongy at the base. Visually it looks really healthy, the roots look great, the leaves are happy, it's not got any discolouration on the trunk or anything. But I noticed today that the base of the trunk seemed to have shrunk, and when I touched it it was soft and spongy.
I don't know what I could have done to it. You don't water them in winter, and I haven't aside for the occasional few drops while watering my other succulents. When I pulled it out the soil was bone dry, so I don't think it could be overwatering. It's in the path of an air conditioner, but if that were the issue the leaves would have gone first. Besides, it's from the middle east so it should be comfortable with warm wind.

Anyone know about this plant and have any idea what I could have done to it?

As you can see, they're hardly thriving, need way more light and could do with repotting. They were in even worse conditions last year at uni, but the new leaves coming through seem healthier. Can't remember Lithops species names very well, but that big brown one seems to cope alright in awful Northern Europe sunlight.

Well I put it into a smaller nursery pot after I checked the roots and drenched it. So I'll see in a couple days if it gets better or worse. It should also get a lot more sun where I've put it.

The big trap thay has digested an ant is from the Giant Rosette, if you pay attention you'll see that underneath is where the DC XL is.

Take it out of water and see if the growths scrape off. Put diluted H2O2 on the roots too to stop a fungal growth if it is one. I wouldn't worry too much about it because whatever it is seems to like growing in water and that won't matter when you plant it in soil.

>tfw you get a new plant and think you're going to end up killing it but it starts thriving
>>
>>2181472
Plants are actually pretty hard to kill. Stick it outside so it gets some sunshine, water occasionally. Taking care of living things is not hard.
>>
>>2181483
There's still a lot that can go wrong though. Too much light, too little light, too much water, not enough water, root rot, all kinds of parasytes, some plants need to be sprayd with water regularly, fertilizing, the right soil, repotting, etc.

Sure, that stuff is easy to deal with and adjust accordingly, if you know the signs, but with this many possibilitys to fuck up every amatuer is bound to kill a plant sooner or later. Especially if he moves up to some harder palnts.
>>
>>2181483
Little bit of a sweeping statement... maybe you're just into veggies or garden flowers or some shit but there are plenty of hardcore plants out there, and an endless amount that cannot just sit in a pot outdoors (and I'd be very interested in hearing more about this magical land where everything can grow outside regardless of habitat/country of origin, Siberian firs and banana trees growing together year-round). Could be at least a couple more weeks, it can depend on your conditions and how long it's been dormant. I have a couple Amorphos only just deciding to wake up, but it is still summer after all. Maybe yours was a late grower last year and is lagging a bit out of sync like some of mine.

Congrats, you've completed easy mode. Now grow something more demanding than a Chlorophytum when it's freezing outdoors, comfortably warm for humans but uncomfortably warm for plants all day and all night indoors, baseline indoor air humidity is way less than 40%, and there's a whopping six to seven hours of sunlight per day, much of it dusk, for several months.

the dormancy strengthens them, it will be a lot weaker after skipping a dormancy

but you can buy a growlight and keep it at about 10°C during the dormancy period

make this last about 4 months

I don't really know how to induce a dormancy manually, because I keep my VFT's outside, so you might want to w8 for a more experienced grower to answer

Get ready for a long ride. Maybe your ghost can come and visit your tree in 5000AD who know
>>
>>2183602
My grandparents used to have one in their backyard and despite being "only" about 50 years old it still was the biggest tree around. Sure, it was still far away from a full grown sequoia, but it could easily spit on the heads of all those pine manlets around it.
My grandfatehr always liked to joke about all the fun the people who'd buy the house would have with taking the thing down and digging up the entire property to get rid of the roots.

It still stands today, sturdy old thing, the new owners just cut down the crown a bit.
>>
So I've been waiting all morning for my plants to arrive but according to the post office I wasn't there and I have to go tomorrow to get them.

Newfig here
How am I doing?
>>
>>2184477
I'm not familiar with the method, but aren't you supposed to do just the pit and not the entire fruit? Also, I have the exact same paper towel holders.
>>
>>2184478
Yeah that's just a big ass pit I found, its an avocado I believe, can someone confirm?
>>
So uh I don't usually go to this board but I have a question. I accidentally started growing a Lime tree in this random potted plant I got as a gift. I know I have to move it eventually but I wanna know if I could plant it outside or will it be pot bound and have to be inside in the winter months
>>
>>2184592
How big is it?
>>
>>2184594
About six inches. My dumbass didn't notice it until now. Im pretty sure its a lime plant because its where put lime pips whenever I find one
>>
Anyone rate my organic soil? Made up a new recipe. I only need 3 cubic ft so the amendments aren't much.
>1/3 perlite
>1/3 fox farms ocean forest
>1/3 peat moss
>2 cups alfalfa meal
>2 cups kelp meal
>2 cups oyster shell

I'm lost on what micronutrients to amend to it. Also my peach trees leaves are getting a lighter color of green, what do?
>>
>>2184477

Looks good so far. When I germinated a avacado pit it took a month to see a root and another month to see a plant. I love how the whole thing just cracks open from one end to another.
>>
>>2184607
what's the point of putting in the ocean forest? it's already a complete mix that contains most of what you put in there.

I follow this for organic fertilizer: http://www.motherearthnews.com/organic-gardening/garden-fertilizer-zmaz06jjzraw.aspx

If you can afford it, get mycorrhizal fungi to add to your soil, it's amazing.
>>
>>2184607
My peach leaves have been kind of pale green too but they're still producing a shit ton of fruit and growing like crazy. I wouldn't be too concerned
>>
>>2184623
Oh yeah its half cracked now, the top part is still bridged tho, will the crack go all the way? That's crazy...
Yeah I didn't track it exactly but it's been 3 weeks or so since It started germination. I've only added a cm of water every day and changed the water every while, is there anything else I should do to assure it's growth? I'm in a tropical climate but the jar's currently sitting indoors...
>>
>>2184722

Oh yeah, that crack goes all the way around until the whole thing splits. Root goes down, tree uncurls up. My tree is about a year old and it still is feeding off the pit.
As for helping with growth, just keep it inside until its big enough for the ground. Rodents love to eat the pit. I lost one to a squirrel I was trying to germinate outside, luckily I had another one on a windowsill. I was trying to experiment. Also, keep it well watered. Avacado trees are super thristy and they grow huge root systems.
I live in a temperate zone (zone 5-6) and I was still able to keep one alive in a pot.
>>
>>2184755

I've got a prunus mume 'tree' and despite spring being a month away, my 'tree' hasn't shed it's leaves at all. I'm thinking that it might not be old enough yet? It's about a metre and a bit but it's growth for the past two years has been restricted by shit potting/position.

>told best indoor growing method for vft are terrariums
>told they should get atleast 5-6 inches of soil for roots

where the hell do you find a terrarium that deep, with enough room for the plants to be a healthy distance from the light
>>
>>2185949
If it's a small plant and you can ensure fairly cool roots, then don't worry too much about media depth. Otherwise, you might have to hang the lights a few inches above the terrarium (if you can) to avoid frying the plant.
>>
>>2185949
Forgot to add, if you have a very sunny windowsill then it would be perfectly happy on there, and you can just forget the terrarium idea altogether.
>>
>>2185955
i'm trying to take it with me to college so im not even sure if i'll get enough window light. are there any specific terreriums you'd recommend?
>>
>>2185966
Not really man, they're pretty much all the same. I wouldn't personally go to all that effort/cost for a VFT, it'll be dormant over winter anyway so a terrarium could make it too bright.

I hope this isn't too entry level for /plant/, but how can I stop Morning Glory plants from seeding? doesnt look that bad. maybe a little overgrown, but its not like weeds are killing it. you could be in a way worse position.

Spores stay on the surface, so go ahead and scrap the top layer of soil. Then let the soil dry out. A little cinnamon rubbed into the surface helps too, just don't get any on your plant, it burns.

You might not even be supporting Monsanto, to my understanding. They don't sell consumer focused products, as I understand. Not sure about whether that also holds for farmers. They simply manufacture a compound which has had the patent expire and literally anyone can make.™
