Smooth, waxy thin leaves and pink-ish stem, there's surely ventricosa in there. Stubby nature of the leaves suggests amp x vent is a pretty safe bet

Probably. The dead pitchers that came with them looked just like my existing amp x vent's so maybe not such a mystery after all

a lot of common garden plants smell really bad, I don't see why they wouldn't sell them because of that.

that's definitely not grandiflora

it looks more like elegans or gigantea

Can someone recommend me a site or a book to learn more about soil?

Ive been only using store bought potting soil + a little bit of sand for almost all my plants except for my succulents for which ive used a succulent soil mix i bought. It works so far the plants are alive and growing, might be because they arent very demanding and easy plants, but i feel like this entire setup is suboptimal and id be better off mixing my own soil.
>>
>>2174829
it's A. elegans.

it's hardy to my zone I don't get why it isn't sold here.

>>
>>2174896
I don't have any site suggestions, since right now I pretty much only grow carnivores and orchids , but for my normal potted plants, I used to use some non-enriched potting mix, perlite and peat moss. Some basics about soil are its pH and its ability to retain and drain water. Perlite/sand are often used to help with drainage and I recommend not omitting those from any soil, unless you have a plant that really enjoys wet and stagnant. Peat moss simply because it contains tannic acid, thus making my media a bit more acidic since the plants I grew seemed to enjoy acidity

Still a pretty dope natural hybrid to be honest. I'm a big fan of that one in particular, my faves are x trusmadiensis and x kinabaluensis though. The edwardsiana is like 15 years old I think? I got it relatively recently though. The lowii was a cutting that I rooted a few years ago, my friend had the mother plant since the early 80's. Honestly the murud clone is dope and pretty fast growing.

Niiiiice, I'll have to resign myself to growing klossii or even klossii x maxima in my dreams, for the time being. Somebody needs to get aristo genetics involved, if nobody can make species seed yet.

My personal favourite has got to be N. x yutaka, a secretive hybrid presumably grown on from seeds taken on a Jap Sabah trek. Who knows what the fuck it is, villosa x lowii looks kind of likely though? There are only a handful of photos, and I've never seen anyone mention it on English-speaking Nep sites either

plant novice here, if i wanted to grow Venus fly traps from scratch indoors what would be the best way to go about it? what terrariums/tanks are the most suitable for growing such plants?
>>
>>2175098
They don't need high humidity nor tropical conditions. They'll do better outdoors, with direct sunlight. Also I recommend you to get adult plants, they are slow. Fucking slow. It'll take them 4 years to reach adulthood from seeds.
>>
>>2175101
my issue is that im living in Ohio and for quite a bit of our year getting 12 hours of sunlight isnt feasible, especially in the coming winter months. is it even worth growing indoors then? or am i just going to end up with an unhealthy plant.
>>
>>2175104
you could always get a t5 flourescent bulb.
>>
>>2175104
Well you don't need 12 hours of sunlight, 4-5 are fine, also in winter they don't need it, they are dormant.
>>
>>2175105
i was hoping for somthing on the smaller scale as i was trying to grow one in my dorm for college (they allow small pets plants and fish but fuck those moving things)

>>2175110
You could always keep a lowland nepenthes.
Hookeriana and bloody mary will do well indoors near a south-facing window, with only one or two hours of sunlight per day.

So I found out that the cleaner at my workplace has been watering my succulent without my knowledge. Came in after the weekend to find it a bloated, soggy mess. Half the leaves fell off as soon as I touched it, the others look ready to explode.

Drained the excess water off (there must have been 500ml in there), took the whole thing out the pot and tried to loosen the soil. It's been sitting on some absorbent tissue in front of a sunny open window ever since.

Is there any hope for it? How can I save it?

Peat-based potting mix with heavy perlite is fine for a ventrata, right? I need to repot it again, and it seems like it was fine using it the last time.

Yeah those flowers are well past the fertile stage, look at the big pods forming. I've never flowered a female but I know they can pointlessly produce a load of unfertilised chaff even if they never come into contact with pollen. And I definitely will, I love the whole concept of mixing and matching dioecious and potentially complementary plants, and waiting to see what gender plants I've raised for years are. Here's a shot from this morning, after I got a bit impatient and used my phone light to candle the buds inside.

Novice. What are some good potting mix/liquid fertilizer brands I can use for setting up some herbs/lettuce in containers? Also looking for info on some things I should be mixing into the soil (people around here sell lots of horse manure, should that be mixed in half-and-half with the potting mix?).

Doing my own research in the meantime but thought I'd ask here as well.

Never heard of them. I use cascadecarnivores, predatoryplants or flytrapcare store. If it's that cold, you should mulch or get a very cold hardy plant like Sarr. Purp ssp purp. Or grow some tropicals indoors all the time

Thanks it looks wonderful! Post offices around the world, those places.

Btw a friend has given me this cluster of B52 because I've been helping him with his greenhouse this evening.

I've been thinking about collecting pleurothallids and bulbophyllum recently but I'm kind of afraid of killing them. Are pleurothallids easy to grow in doors or do you have a specialized terrarium/greenhouse?

I think my plants might need the luck more than me. My girlfriend, who I will be moving in with, is utter garbage at keeping plants alive. Once I left my truncata with her for about a month since I was traveling and all of the pitchers got aborted.
>>

>>
>>2176954
Agh, that's a shame, truncatas really are beautiful.
>>
>>2176968
Yeah. At least the plant survived. Orchids that I have given her and even strawberries and lithops have been... less fortunate.
>>
>>2176979
Also same girl that killed my VFTs when I gifted them to her
>>
>>2176982
If she's interested you should teach her how to take care of them.
>>
>>2176979
I still don't understand how people can fail to take care of even the most basic of living things.
>>
>>2177010
it's easy- they came from families that didn't know shit and learned it's okay to just give up instead of actually figuring out how to do it.
>>
Tissue culture looks so cool and fun, but it looks super expensive to get into, is it worth it?
>>
>>2177010
I can take blame for the strawberries. I was a fucking idiot and transplanted them in the fucking middle of a california summer. And I guess I didn't remove enough leaves because they wilted and I guess then died on her in a few weeks. I think she may have overwatered the lithops because she said they exploded or something. As for the phals... Not sure what the fuck happened there
>>2176999
Checked. But yeah I will have to. I'll let her finish school first though. She's doing a double major and seems to need injections of caffeine to stay alive at this point right now
>>2177012

>>
>>2177139
Well Sarracenia purpurea ssp purpurea is found natively there so you can grow it outdoors with pretty much fuck all for protection. Nepenthes can be grown indoors
>>
>>2176612
They unfortunately don't have a smell

>>2176838
http://www.aos.org/orchids/culture-sheets/novice-paphiopedilum.aspx
Here's a great link for the beginner. Paphs really aren't too hard to take care of and are good for people just getting into orchids.

>>2176849
I really wouldn't recommend growing any of the Pleurothallids outside of a high-humidity grown area. If you live in California or Florida it makes it a lot easier to grow them outside, but other than that I really wouldn't grow them in house. You can just set-up a fish tank to hold plants. The most utilitarian way to grow them is a big Rubbermaid container with lights.

>>2177021
If you have a group of plants that you really want to propagate then yes, but otherwise it's just too cost prohibitive. There are also too many ways to mess up the sterilization without having a flow hood or a dedicated area to tissue culture.

>>2177040
Unfortunately Sempervivum are very hard to break down into individual plants. I thought that if I saw the flowers I could identify it better, but it seems like that won't happen. If you have a plant tag, you can just label it Sempervivum sp. and it'll be fine. Very pretty plant btw.
>>
>>2177143
Most of the swampland is protected though, I hear you can get in a lot of trouble for skeeting a plant from even a green space. I'll see what I can do though, and report back if I make progress! Thank you so much! Ill have a purple garden of carnivorous biomass in no time
>>
>>2177148
Do you have a picture of your setup? I'm looking to grow under lights in a tank but I'm not sure what kind of lights I'd need or whether cooling is necessary.

Purpurea is one of the best CPs for newies, you won't regret it (they suck at getting any prey compared to tall Sarracenia tho)
Don't get one from the wild just buy one, they are the cheapest Sarracenia, and since it's native to your area cross pollination with wild ones won't be a concern.

BTW I planted my B52 cluster in moss with some friends

UK grower so sunlight is also dogshit - all my Neps do great over summer facing south-ish though. However, many come to a complete standstill over winter, and I imagine winters here are considerably milder than yours. Maybe consider artificial lighting but surrounded by reflective foil, seems to work ok in my terrariums and doesn't look too shit either. Oh and it also depends what Nepenthes it is, if it's ventrata/Miranda/Bloody Mary then there's no need to make a fuss in the first place.

I was looking at the spaghnum moss of my venus fly trap, and I noticed that there were these tiny bugs crawling around in it that were no bigger than the head of a pin. They were too small to be able to take a picture of, so I tried to draw a picture of what they looked like. Can anyone ID this bug for me? Will it harm my plant? How can I get rid of it?

Well idk about this TV since it's a led I think but I believe a 1000 watt plasma costs around 1$/month to be on 24/7 so idk how lighting is a problem. Home depot has led panels but idk if they are strong enough.

Mostly interested in the 3 sisters and Mexi pings but local greenhouse only had d. Capensis and p primaflora.

Is it too late in the year to grow pitcher plants from seed?
>>
>>2177787
You could try, you might be successful. But you can also wait until the fall and plant them and let them experience the cold, I heard that helps them out to sprout in the spring.
>>
>>2177787
If you had growlights you could do it indoors. I saw a forum post years ago how some growers got faster growth by skipping the first year of dormancy in seedlings.
