The plant general: What the FUCK is that edition
This plant is swole as fuck

Welcome to /plant/, the resident plant general thread. Dank purps, next level veganism and come on. It's motherfucking MMXVI and you STILL aren't photosynthetic? What the fuck is wrong with you lot.

/Plant/ is for the discussion of plants (obviously). Horticulturists, hobbyists and botanists welcome! Questions about plants? Want to show off your two inch dick-I mean plant? Maybe you want to start growing something new and exciting? Well come on over to /plant/!

Introducing a new basic caresheet with every thread
This thread: Nepenthes truncata HL (Also most HL species in general)
>partial sun to bright filtered sun.
Neps do well with high output fluorescent arrays, unlike most temperate carnivorous plants
>lower light will lead to poor growth and pitcher development, but is rarely fatal
>Truncata seem to adapt well to lower humidity.
They aren't picky cunts like ULL nepenthes
>Well draining medium is a must, unless you like root rot.
Truncatas are ocassionally epiphytic. Use 1:1:1 LFS, Perlite and Orchid bark
>Don't keep in standing water.
Why must you harm your babies like that?
>water with dH2O only
>no dormancy required
>Wait patiently for those glorious foot long pitchers

What are carnivorous plants made out of if they don't need to eat bugs to grow and receive no nutrients from their water or soil?
>>
>>2169050
CPs photosynthesize, which is pretty obvious is some genera like Nepenthes. Photosynthesis provides all of the energy a carnivorous plant needs to just get by. In fact, some won't produce any well-developed trapping organs until they acquire enough light for healthy photosynthesis.
Also, it's impossible for soil mixes to be completely devoid of all nutrients. Carnivorous plants evolved in soils where nutrition is poor, but not non-existent.

Many plants get by just fine in shit tier soil. Carnivorous plants are merely trying to gain an edge against their competitors
>>
>>2169115
Well if there carnivorous, how come they photosynthesize?

>>2169145
Because sunlight is their energy source, insects provide other nutrients such as nitrogen or potassium.
>>
>>2169145
They get micronutrients from prey and macronutrients from the sun. Other plants get micronutrients from the soil.
>>
>>2169145
>some won't produce any well-developed trapping organs until they acquire enough light for healthy photosynthesis
>Carnivorous plants are merely trying to gain an edge against their competitors

Sounds like they're only carnivorous for the extra nutrients. Like fertilizer, I assume?

>>
>>2169115
I meant on a molecular level. I was under the impression that there was supposed to be literally nothing in their soil or water. They'll grow (slowly, but still) even if you feed them nothing, so what's the new growth even made of? Photons don't have any mass, they're supposedly not getting anything from the soil, they aren't made of 100% water, so... what?
But I guess you're saying that there's just enough "stuff" in there to form a cell wall around the water they receive?

Also, unrelated, but is there a reason people use dried bloodworms instead of frozen ones, or is it just convenience?

It's an old parts tractor that sits behind my barn. I assume the weed broadcasts its seed, and some found their way in to the cracked vinyl seat. The foam must have retained enough moisture for the seed to start, and here we are. Life finds a way, Jeff Goldbloom, all that.

I think you're right, that stuff grows all over behind that barn.

Now, everytime I see caterpillars, they go straight into one of my neps.
>>
>>2169867
What hurts is the most is that yesterday I saw the exact same caterpillars crawling on my house, but dismissed them because according to the ID guide I looked up, they only eat the leaves of trees in the walnut family. We actually do have a black walnut, but it's nowhere near my mystery plant. They don't even make up for it by evolving into one of the qt moths.

>>
>>2169151
Pretty much. Plants need nitrates and amino acids and stuff normally found in the soil but due to the poor quality of the soil these specialized organisms are found in, the enviroment forces all plants to adapt or kick the bucket. Prime example of evolution and evolutionary pressures.

Yep, those are mine.

If you have been following the internet instructions I don't know what you may be doing wrong. My best advice is to try growing them in live sphagnum moss it prevents rotting and infections. I live in Mallorca so we hace very different weather conditions, but the most reputable growers are from the UK so it's not impossible for you to grow beautiful plants.

It's a pretty common focus of plant collectors and mature specimens can be very expensive. I'd try adenium first since it's relatively quick growing and you can get seeds/seedlings very cheaply and easily. Try fat-plants though.
>>
>>2169182
Think of light like an oven, its not part of the food itself but its what makes the food complete. The "stuff" comes from what the soil is made of, as well as CO2 and water. Nutrients (like nitrogen, nitrates etc.) are present in water and soil and gives the plant a 'boost' to keep it growing. The light makes the combination compete (6CO2+6H2O→C^6H^12O^6[glucose] + O2) where the arrow is the light. The glucose is used to make ATP which is Fürher used to make the cells energy.
>>2169207
>organic matter
>glucose
Wew lad its organic alright but its THE organic matter of the plant.

Question for all the plantologists here. What would happen if you did an experiment where you planted a whole bunch of trees and then only planted the seeds that were the very first to form in each generation, over and over. (What I mean is if you artificial selected only the fastest-growing plants to reproduce, would you eventually get a seed that's capable of growing into a full-sized tree in just an hour?)
>>
>>2170469
Doubtful. That level of growth would need a ton of energy which would be impossible to get from photosynthesis.
>>
>>2170455
Not sure... considering it's one of the oldest leaves on the plant, I wouldn't worry too much. I've had old leaves die from the sides rarely, after temperature fluctuations if I remember correctly. Maybe cut it off to be safe.
What is it by the way, looks fairly rare?

Oh, wait you are following the instructions that came with them! That might be the problem, I'm gonna tell you how I gtow them:

>They are full sun plants they need at least 4 hours of sunlight per day
>Water them with demineralized, rain or osmotized water only (it has to be <80 ppm)
>They need a lot of water keep a tray under their pot and refill it when the substrate has dried a bit.
>Substrates: peat moss + quartz sand, live sphagnum moss or dry sphagnum. Moss works better in my experience, dry or alive.
>Respect their dormancy periods, they will go through an inactivity period in winter, if the weater is too cold they will loose all their leaves, but will start growing them again in spring.

Also don't be a retard and feed them meat or something, if you want to see the traps in action get a live insect that is not more than 1/3 of the trap and feed it to a trap that is well developed.
>>
>>2170415
looks kinda rot-ish to me
Usually when a leaf dies on me, it turns brown and dies from the tendril. Just cut it off before it's too late
>>
>>2170418
If they flop over and die, you aren't giving them enough sunlight. Grow these outdoors. They will not survive under even extremely high output lights. VFTs are NOT houseplants or terrarium plants.

Been trying to grow Hylocereus myself, got loads of heavily-neglected seedlings kept in low light that have barely grown in a year. I haven't touched them in that length of time though to be fair, do they need regular repotting and fertilising (as well as better conditions)?
>>
>>2170889
Slowly acclimatize them to more light and give them watered down miracle gro solution.

Once they've gotten over baby steps, full sun.

I just have mine in general potting mix. They often get a bit water-logged but so long as they're getting sun and are in high growth mode it won't bother them in the slightest. Not a strategy for all the tropical cacti, though. What hylos love will fucking murder a lot of epis.
>>
>>2170889
>heavily neglected
If you fertilize, you WILL kill them. Do not repot either. Move them to a better growing enviroment, by slowly acclimating them to more and more light and then as they pick up growth naturally, start to fertilize with dilute strength fertilizer that is suitable for them (no recommendations; I don't grow cacti).
>>
>>2170897
Cacti are fickle and weird. Hylocerei are like the dogs of cacti. They love everything. Hard to kill them. Big, clumsy, dopey fuckers.

Epis? I have an Anguliger. I have a few. Fickle. Fickle as hell.

Wittia? They want to be like Hylocereus, but they are hard tropical. They require heat and humidity and don't seem to like direct sun. I haven't tried direct sun because I'm culturing them in an aquarium so I don't lose everything after they previously started dying off. If you don't provide the humidity, they die. Fast.

They are extremely slow, flytraps should be fine in the same soil for two years. If it's live moss, it'll last forever.
Anyway, for some reason they dig themselves into the soil so you'll have to take them out every winter when they are inactive to grant a good growing.
Oh, and flowering weakens them a lot, so cut the flower stems when they start developing. You can see in my pics I did cut them all.

One of the Gaultheria procumbens I poached from the woods is putting out new growth. I have been trying to get these to grow for years. If this means one finally established without dying of shock, I'll be sooo happy.

Not sure what US plant shows are like, but I went to a couple of UK horticultural shows as a kid and they were pretty cool. A lot of cheap easy CPs, cacti etc, I even snagged an adult female N. sibuyanensis for about 15 quid. If it's a specific CP show I imagine there will be a fuckload of cheap and non-nooby shit available.

Also I have a reason to be feeding them and not just let them fend from themselves like I do with Sarracenia and Nepenthes: Since blackbirds destroy them and sparrows steal my moss, I have to keep the VFT inside cages, which makes them get much less insects making their growth slower.

Yep. Or general ineptitude. It doesn't take long to cool one off. You can literally dump ice cubes ontop of the potting media and cool down some water and pour that chilled water through the pot 1-2 a day. Usually root overheating is the result of a noob being unattentive and unaware of their plant's requirements

Had to move the dank purp in. 113F, 2% humidity, and down to my last 3 or so hundred mL of distilled water, which has to be shared amongst all of my plants. Should've just bought another nep. This thing drinks water faster than a dehydrated subsaharan african.

Kind of, I've had a purp for a year (found it mysteriously abandoned at the top of a multi-storey carpark). It's in a spare terrarium for the summer (no windowsill space available) with a big deep water tray, I forgot to fill it up for about 3 days and remembered yesterday, now the stupid shit's about 80% dead and drier than Gandhi's bellend in a sandstorm. Might as well relocate it to the pond outside if it's going to continue being such a thirsty faggot

Thanks for the quick response. It was a bunch of 20-somethings drinking and having a good time, it's my fault that I had the cacti and succulents in the living room right next to the dining room table. I'm sure someone just leaned back in their chair or something.

At any rate, I'm happy to hear that they don't look too bad. My biggest concern is that tiny succulent, it feels like it got sunburnt. Looks much more yellow than it used to and is bone-dry despite being watered a week ago.

Absolutely no idea, it was a gift from my girlfriend's mother two years ago and had no label or markings. Same with most of the other cacti in that pic. Quartz sand (the one for aquariums, pool filters etc) and peat moss 1-1 is the recommended mix for sarracenia. It will work well for them.

Anyone have any experience growing mimosa plants? You know, the ones who close their leaves when you touch them? My mom used to grow them a few years back and I kinda don't really know where to get some seeds, cause she doesn't remember where she got em. Are they hard to grow/demanding/etc.?

They're super easy, though if grown poorly, the leaves may stop responding. You can find adult plants at pretty much any big box hardware/home improvement store

they like lots of water and sun.

the roots are prone to rotting so the soil needs to drain well.

It's starting to really annoy me how such elitism pervades fucking plant growing no matter who I talk to. I don't know if it's because cultivating plants attracts more autists than any other hobby, but it's why I'm not a part of any society, so I don't have to hear cucks like you spouting off about how much better your plants grow than some plebbit fags. Most of you probably have been growing CPs only long enough to be considered novices at the best. I went to this board because I expected 4chan to be a bit better in that regard. Why the fuck would you losers be elitists? Of course you are. Whatever.

We don't brag about how much better our plants are. We laugh at how poorly some people grow their plants like the ones here >>2173656 and how stupid some people's questions can truly be. Look at this shit.>>2173526 If you're offended by this, then sorry faggot. Should've used google to do some basic research before buying your plants.
>considered novices at the best
Even if we were all newbies (hint: the carnivore posters here are not newbies), we aren't the fucking retarded ass idiots on other boards who go out and buy something like a drosera binata, leave it indoors, in poor lighting and then ask why the fuck it's dying.
>>
>>2174105
Beginners have to start somewhere, dumbfuck. They're sure as shit not coming to 4chan to get their questions answered. What's wrong with helping people if they're doing something bad? And I thought you were the only okay trip on this board.

>>2174100
I should have worded that differently. More like people would call out people if they're acting like tards.
>>
>>2174112
There is nothing wrong with helping people if they're doing something bad. There is something wrong if they waste other people's time by asking an obvious question you can have answered by going to google.com and entering a few key words. It's like magic I swear. I was a beginner. I agree. Beginners have to start somewhere. So I picked up a copy of savage garden by D'Amato, skimmed through it, used the slow-as-shit internet of the early 2000s and did my basic research. And then I bought a plant. And while my first plant didn't have the best first few months due to rookie mistakes, it sure as hell didn't have a Darlingtonia-left-out-in-the-fucking-sun-and-experienced-severe-root-overheating moment.
>>
>>2174116
Also, I don't know how long you've lurked this thread, but quite a few people come here looking for help, especially from our VFT poster and of course plont, who seems to know every single commonly encountered plant like the back of his hand
>>
>>2174116
That does bring up another point. Peter D'Amato I've heard is an elitist. Haven't met the guy, but it's spread around that he is.

>>2174118
Some of the shit that gets posted on this board is pretty bad, too. I'll see if I can find an example.
>>
>>2174123
>>2167655
This one was pretty bad. I had to identify the plant and the OP never replied. I'm worried that he actually went somewhere to say that he found a new species. That's one example. When anons make new threads about identifying plants, someone will answer it's a spiky plant! if it's a cactus or sometimes even a succulent. That's another one.
>>
>>2174123
>That does bring up another point. Peter D'Amato I've heard is an elitist. Haven't met the guy, but it's spread around that he is.

I bet for every one bad post that's been posted on this board ever, you can find 10 just on r/savagegarden. You will always have people post shit like that on 4chan.
