*Questions and stories about dogs
>>
So...

Got my first pupper, never had a dog before and always wanted to have that feel. She is about 4 months old best I can tell.

One of the books I have been reading suggests giving pupper beef leg bones. Instructs to remove excess fat and meat, boil for 15 to 20 minutes, let cool and give to pupper.

Did just that, pupper loves it. Best part is I was able to take the bone away with minimal growling and no biting or "protection" behavior.

But now I just did some online research, and about 50/50 are saying don't give dogs bones of any kind.

Did I fuck up?
>>
which is the best treatment to get rid of fleas?
>>
>>2160155

I dont know wny you would cut off the good stuff and boil it???
>>
>>2159858
>stories
Apparently when my dog has nightmares, I wake up, comfort her (she often cries upon waking up from nightmares), and go back to bed when she's back asleep. Never remember this at all, but my mom filmed it twice.

>>2160155
Bones are bad because dogs small pointy splinters might damage your dog's innards.
>>
>>2160155

Yes, you fucked up.

Not only could small shards of bone that your dog ate be perforating your pups gut right now, or even causing impaction, you're giving your puppy one of the hardest bones out there- aka a recipe for her chipping her teeth on them.

Ignore ANY dietary advice from books unless they are written by a certified vet, or better yet a certified vet nutritionist. Most trainers out there don't even have a degree in biology, let alone nutrition- and can suggest some downright dangerous things for dogs.

On another note- have you read Dunbar's before/after you get your puppy yet? Free PDF file, make it your bible for socialisation.
>>
>>2160158

A spot on/tablet from the vets- spinosad (comfortis) is amazing for getting rid of fleas on the spot, and can be used in combination with an ivermec based product for an emergency. After that you need to stay on top of your flea medication.

Wash ALL soft furnishings the dog has come into contact with, hoover daily- continue to hoover for at least two months so you get all the fleas in the cycle. Your basic problem at the moment is that even when you kill all the live fleas on the dogs, they will have laid eggs in your carpet/bedding/dog that you need to remove too. You can get flea sprays (indorex is the one they sell at the vets I work at which works well- but just make sure you get a veterinary approved one, not just a walmart off-the-shelf one) which you spray onto carpets too if you want to go all out.

if you/your pupper are disappointed at lack of taste gnaw-able things, get a bully stick. They're a bit expensive for what they are, but if she's not a power chewer it'll last a while. Don't let her chew for too long or the high protein will give her diarrhea

Here's my pupper with his first bully stick. That's what I get for letting the dog pick out his own treat from the store.

Do doggos know each other's voices? I took both my dogs to the vet: one actually needed something done and the other was taken just so she wouldn't be home alone. The tech took the dog that needed something in the back and you could hear it hurt him because he started to whimper. My other dog started to get really uneasy and started to whimper and whine a bit too.

Can they recognize each other like that? Or am I anthropomorphizing?
>>
>>2160383
I think so. My dog cries when he hears a video of my aunt's dog, but doesn't react at all when he hears a video of another husky that isn't her.
>>
How do you train a dog not to bark in her cage?

This is probably a unique situation, but let me explain it. My mom has a little dog that she pretty much spoils. And when we're at home, she sleeps in her cage just fine. However, at our vacation home she has always slept with my parents in their bed.

However we just now moved away from our old home and into our vacation home. And my parents don't want to sleep with her, so they put her in her cage (the same one from home). And she barked for two hours last night. And then woke up at 3 am to yip some more. Our other dog had no problem, he didn't mind, even though previously at our vacation home he had slept in my bed every night.

So how do we shut the damn dog up?
>>
Is it normal for a puppy to groan/moan at the end of a yawn?
10 month old, he doesn't always do it but he does it maybe half the time.
I've never heard of it before we got him and I cannot find anything on google about it, only about the whine during the yawn
>>
>>2160393
Your pup's just savoring that yawn.
>>
>>2160393

Yawning is a sign of stress/anxiety in dogs.
>>
>>2160453
Not always; don't freak that anon out. He's already freaking out over his dog yawning
>>
>>2160379

Brill, best of luck for you and your pup.

Following on from >>2160382 , try filling a kong with wet food and freezing it. You could even use it as a substitute for her dinner- it'll take her/him a while to get through it, give her teeth a good work out if she's gnawing on it and the cold should soothe her gums.
>>
>>2160385

Patience, and getting her used to her crate.

So, feed her in her crate, put her in her crate when you're around- basically go back to puppy crate training and make that crate the best place in the entire world to be.

Don't expect her to stop barking very rapidly, it'll take a few days.
>>
>>2160383
yeah they use their voices to communicate so it's not crazy to assume they can tell them apart (at least to a limited extent)
>>
>>2160393
You vocalize when you yawn sometimes right? I think it's just the same thing
>>
>>2160467
I'm not freaking out over it, I just find it weird.
It's pretty cute desu, makes him look like an old man when he's only 10 months old
>>
I just want to share that my pup is pathetic at catching thrown treats.
After a long period of treats bouncing off her nose or head (she's 11 months), she now opens and closes her mouth several times fast, as if that'd help her catch treats. It's hilarious to see, really. She still doesn't move her head much.

Oddly she has no problems with thrown toys.
>>
>>2160472
This. Also never reward the dog while she's barking (which means no attention whatsoever, you must be ignoring her completely.) If she gets what she wants by barking, you'll reinforce the barking and she'll learn she just has to bark long enough in order to get a reaction/attention/to get let out, etc.

So yeah. LOTS of patience.
>>
What kind of crate liner will my puppy not chew up??? Just woke up at 12am to him chewing up his week old memory foam mattress.
>>
>>2160945
None, he's bored.
>>
>>2160958
And not tired enough.
>>
Is it normal for doggos to be lazier in the summer?

My dog is turning 1 and it's her first summer, she seems normal and happy but I find she's sleeping a lot more and doesn't want to play outside much, she seems to hate the heat. She's still getting exercise and everything, I play with her inside and walk her twice a day in the morning and at night when it's cool, but should I be worried?

In the fall and winter she was always raring to go and wanted to walk forever

These are not our first beagles, and I gotta admit. Genetics matter. Genetics matter a whole fucking lot. They are trim, they are lithe, they are well behaved and affectionate, and they are fucking gorgeous.

Never buying a cheap dog again.
>>
>>2161293
oh my god what a beautiful princess
>>
>>2161624

Keeping them trim and lithe won't necessarily be down to genetics, but avoiding:
> Hip and elbow dysplasia
> Multifocal Retinal Dysplasia
> Factor VII deficiency (bleeding disease)
> Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG)
> MLS (Musladin-Leuke Syndrome) (several congenital defects – short outer toes, flat skull, creased ears, thick, tight skin)
> Pyruvate kinase deficiency (a key enzyme deficiency which shortens the lifespan of red blood cells, leading to hemolytic anaemia)
> Neonatal cerebellar cortical degeneration (NCCD) (severe progressive neurological disorder)
> IGS (Imerslund – Grasbeck syndrome) (vitamin B12 is unable to be absorbed through the gut) (lack of appetite, lethargy and malaise) (requires long term treatment) test currently available in the US

Is down to genetics, so good going anon if you went to a good breeder.

she had breast cancer that spread to her lungs, had to put her down

the house feels so empty without her, i don't know what to do
>>
>>2161373
I am thinking some kind of spaniel. I thought about brittany, but she is fairly small. 17 pounds, maybe should gain one more.
>>
>>2161894
Mourn for as long as you need to, then give that empty space in your home to another deserving pupper.
>>
>>2161894
>see a towel or a pile of clothes or something in the corner
>start crying when you realize it isn't her
>>
>>2161894
>>2162015
Mourn how you need to mourn, anon. You lost your best friend. Cry your eyes out. Drink. Or maybe even both. Do what you need to do.

And when you are ready, open your heart and home to a new pupper.

I want a hairless dog. I want a big dog, at least 60 lb. Are there any breeds like this?
>>
>>2161119
What type of dog?

Not that it matters, but most animals are lazier during the summer heat. It gets 110 F here and my dogs will only go out in mornings and evenings. They will come outside with us when we go out to smoke or get something out of the car, but they always go right back in when we do.
>>
>>2162469
No. Short hairs shed tons too. Ask these guys what breed sheds the least.
Yorkies don't really shed at all, to name one.
>>
>>2162516
Poodles are also popular choices for doggos that do not shed much. They will require regular grooming though
>>
Can you teach a dog it's okay to jump on you but not other people? I personally find the behavior very endearing and don't mind or a bit, but I know it's one of those things dogs aren't supposed to do.
>>
>>2162516
I already have a smooth border collie so I want a dog who is a bit bigger and sheds less than she does.

>>2162525
Poodles are very smart right? I don't mind grooming at home. No Yorkies, or any terrier, for me as I have pet rats.
>>
>>2162534
Poodles are one of the smartest doggos out there. Incredibly intelligent... like 2nd or 3rd on Coren's scale.
>>
>>2162543
You're right, they are second, with Collie coming in first place and German Shepherd being third. To give you an idea, the average GSD has an IQ of around 60 which is equivalent to a human with learning difficulties.
>>
>>2162543
If I get a poodle I'll own two of the smartest breeds. Nice.

Do they do OK in the heat as long as they're clipped short? I live in Florida.
>>
>>2162564
Clipped short, and maybe try to get a lighter colored one to be extra careful.

guys I want a well tempered dog that's relatively easy to train and deals better with being alone for a few hours a day.

I'm more than willing to get a dog that's a couple of years old. Based on this, should I be looking for a specific breed or am I better off going with a mutt?
>>
>>2163054
Basically any dog will be your ideal dog if you spend enough time with it. Most dogs will be kewl with spending a few hours alone if you exercise them well before you go.

Based on that, go on your local craigslist (forreal, there's free dogs that need homes on there) or petfinder and type in your zip code. These options are usually the best to getting a hint on the animal's personality since people have likely been spending time with them. 2-5 is the age range you want, especially if you don't want the crazy wacky zoomy energetic pup phase.

My dog is allergic to flea poison. I tried all sorts of bullshit eucalyptus crap. A tiny bit of apple cider vinegar mixed in his food fleas are gone. I used to flea comb him daily. He is around 45 lbs & I give him less then a quarter of a capfull of vinegar in his food. I don't know what a tiny dog would need.If you try use it a drop at a time

I adopted this pupper a few weeks ago. The family he came from claimed the vet said he was "purebreed pitbull", but they said they didn't believe the vet. I think he's got some basenji in him, due to his body-shape.

Can pitbulls really have his goofy ears or is he a mutt? I know there's something about cutting the ears, but none of them when I google it are quite like his.
>>
I wanna get a job. How do I train my dog to be calm while I'm out? She's a border collie.
>>
What
>>
>>2163135
Exercise before you leave, crate her, and give her a Kong. Try to come home for lunch too.
>>
Considering adopting a female long haired German Shepherd? Any advice? Training books? How much per month should I be budgeting?
>>
>>2163193
The upfront costs are going to be the worst. Crate, food, toys, treat, harness, collar, ID tag, lead, popper scooper / poo bag holder, treat bag, food bowls, water bowls, dog bed, adoption fee, enzymatic cleaners, initial vet visit, initial groomer visit (would recommend taking the dog to a groomer first thing before stepping foot in your home for a flea dip, then to the vet for Bravecto plus HW/general parasite prevention pills... personally will be doing this for literally every rescue I take home based on my experience with the last one). This isn't even counting a behaviorist if he had any serious problems.

All and all, you are looking at like 500+ to take that dog home. It's incredibly expensive to accommodate taking home a new dog.

Monthly, set enough aside for the next dose of flea/tick prevention, HW/parasite guard medicine, food, treats, and maybe a new toy. At least 100? If you do not have a nice nest egg, turn also side aside more for an emergency fund. Also, immediately get pet insurance. Research a brand very, very carefully. Lots of trash pet insurance carriers that will just take your money.

Lastly, spend a weekend binging on ZakGeorge on YouTube.
>>
>>2163201
Its a coworker of mine, doggo is a year old and has all of the upfront costs already purchased. I don't think she's gonna want much to rehome her with all that stuff. Shots and spaying are all done too.

Zak George, dog trainer?
>>
>>2163201

What on earth do you want a poo bag holder for: isn't that what pockets are for?
>>
>>2163202
Glad to hear upfront costs are taken care of. Would still get a vet exam though first thing. Will establish ownership. You'll need that to change the microchip information.

Yes. ZakGeorge's channel is all about dog training. It's sort of /an/'s standard recommendation.

Also, since she is probably already housebroken, get her on a schedule right away.

So for the last two days my dog's had had diarrhea, except in the morning, she nearly poops normally and it gets progressively worse as the day goes by, until it's all liquid.
Should I wait some more and see if it passes or is it already worth taking her to the vet for?

What are some more "low impact" exercises I can do with my dog?

Went to the vet for boosters + regular checkup and the vet mentioned in passing that we should take him swimming because it's easier on his joints. I'm sure this was just a "preventative maintenance" comment, but when I consulted my vet-tech friend, he said she likely recommended it because she felt a little swelling in his joints and reminded me that I do take the little guy on lots of hikes and he goes to daycare where he's super active for 7+ hours. We also live in an apartment where he has to climb stairs every day, multiple times a day.

He's only a year and a half old so no one is too worried, but I'd like to do more. We already have an appointment at a hydrotherapy place that has a recreational pool, but I've got no clue what other low impact exercises are effective for dogs. He's a golden retriever and border collie mix, so he's got a lot of energy to get out.
>>

Not at all, 100% untrue. As someone who has done nothing but rescue adult dogs, no dog is too old to form a bond with you.

>>2163565
I take my dogs to the vet right away for diarrhea, but that is me. At the very least, the vet will give you some medicine to make her more comfortable, as well as some cans of bland food to feed for a few days.

>>2163673
Try to stimulate his mind. Do lots of obedience training and tricks. Play Simon Says and see how many commands he can do in a row. For many doggoS, stimulating their minds can be very tiring.

Thanks friendo, met the doggo today and she is beautiful and will be a treat to train. I hope she gets along with my current pupper, he's about a decade older and 50 lbs lighter so we'll see.
>>
Anyone feeding Orijen to their dogs?
How much do you feed them compared to the suggested amounts?
>>
>>2164031
Read up on new introducing dogs. Tldr the best way is on a walk. Ask your coworker to walk new doggo and you walk back your current doggo. The first day new doggo be comes home, exhaust the hell out of both of them before letting them meet in your house. Also be careful with the first meal time: feed em separate first.

Also if the new doggo us well socialized, the weight difference won't be a problem. My dogs have about a 25lbs difference and they play fine. You may hear current doggo bark and whimper when playing, but that is just dog for "lay off too rough!".

I apologize in advance for not knowing how to unjumble my post to make more sense.

Brothers girlfriend has a pitbull that at some point pregnant, father is i believe a beagle incase it matters. The pitbull has 14 puppies over 2 days, birthing a little more than half the first morning , the second group the next morning.
One stillbirth, the rest seemed fine.
2 months later, (three days ago) one of the puppies starts crying while hiding under their bed.
They took it to a vet last night who said the puppy is blind, unsure if it was born like that or suffered injury. They did an xray and found nothing. Further testing is too expensive for them. If i remember, $2,000 for an mri was the next option.

The problem is their debate as to whether or not they should keep it or have it euthanized.

Tl;dr blind puppy, can it live a decent life?

Hey guys, I'm getting a pupper soon and was wondering what kind of stuff I should be doing in preparation. I am reading that Before/After you get your puppy and am watching Zak George's Youtube channel. I've had two dogs before but this is the first time I'm getting one while I am an adult and am going to be training it myself.
>>
>>2164563
1. Pick up the essentials.
2. Research BOTH a good vet and a good emergency vet hospital (assuming the primary vet doesn't do both). I cannot stress researching the hospital. God forbid something happens, but if it does, you'll be able to act fast instead of frantically googling.
3. If you are into it, research good pet insurance. There are some companies that are legit, and some companies that will just take your money and not pay out a claim.
4. Find a pet store closest to your house and closest to your work. Not only will you just need shit periodically, but you won't have everything in 1. You just won't. You'll be at the pet store every day for like 2 weeks after taking home your pupper.
>>
>>2164570
I'll be using the same vet and hospital I used for my last dog, they were fantastic.
One question I have is, would it be too much to take the pupper straight to the vet right when I get them? I know I need to get them their shots and everything but when should that be done?
>>
Why does my dog love pissing on my neighbour's gate? And the dog that lives there doesn't seem to mind it, and in fact I've seen him lick up my dog's piss. Assuming it's a sign of friendship, I've never seen him do this with anyone else.

A-are they gay?
>>
>>2164574
>would it be too much to take the pupper straight to the vet right when I get them?
nope, that's a super good idea.
I did the same thing when I got my puppy. unfortunately, the rescue directed me to a really shitty vet who couldn't even identify flea bites. fortunately, when he began showing symptoms of bad parasitical infections later, my boss directed me to my current amazing vet. frequent vet visits early in life definitely contributed to my dog's love of the vet. he gets really excited when he sees we're pulling into their parking lot and his happy, unassuming demeanor sometimes calms down anxious dogs in the lobby.

also, sometimes vets will have "puppy packages" where x amount of clinic visits are free before a certain age, spay/neuter pre-exam is free, and some other goodies are free too. check about that. the earlier you get set up with it, the better you can take advantage of it.

>I know I need to get them their shots and everything but when should that be done?
that depends on how old the puppy is. whether you're adopting from a rescue/shelter or a breeder, there should have been at least one round of shots given before you're able to get the dog. move forward from there. your vet will be able to tell you the appropriate age.

another question actually, my dog is really well behaved 90% of the time but he barks when my roommate enters a room, even if my dog is not in the room he enters. He is quiet all day til the roommate gets home and he doesn't care about other people going through doors. why does he do this?

My 6 month old pointer puppy bites me a lot, sometimes other family members too

shouting at him (occasionally fully screaming) does nothing really, time outs (alone for 5-10 mins in my back garden) don't seem to be doing anything, a slap on the head doesn't seem to be doing anything either. He takes it as a challenge and starts barking and trying to bite more. He only stops if the person he bites properly loses their temper which ends with him running away to hide somewhere with his tail between his legs.

Any ideas?

And you also have to factor in that if you buy quality food, your dog will need less of it.

It's sorta just a meme honestly. Some dogs don't handle grain well, so for them it is required, for for others, it's just an option.

that's not how trust works, even for humans. they mean where other dogs go. if your yard hasn't had dogs in it, or at least hasn't had dogs in it (and dog waste) for a long-ass time (think multiple seasons), it's okay. you don't want to start doing puppy pads because it's more difficult to transition off of them.

Some dogs go their entire life without ever needing to have them expressed. Other dogs need it done every 2 weeks. Some dogs can go 10 years without ever needing it done, but need it done one day out of the blue. It's not unusual you aren't familiar with it desu.

You can have a groomer do it or even do it yourself, but I recommend against it. For one, it is fucking beyond revolting. For two, a vet tech will be able to tell you if anything went wrong and if he needs actual vetinary care for an issue back there. Again, won't cost more than 20 bucks and most larger vets do it on a walk-on basis. If they are full, he'll feel a ton better.

Is this something I should take my dog to the vet for? She's been in last 6 months for a checkup and all sorts of things but this bump just appeared about a week and half ago. It hasn't changed in size or appearance since the first day when it had a little dried blood on it so I thought it was just a bite.

I posted this a while back about an anon whose dog had a very similar lump on her ear, but applicable here too. However, with a lump on her armpit it's more liable to burst/damage- so you might be forced to have it removed anyway.

> I'm going to guess it could either be a wart, a histiocytoma, a squamous cell carcinoma or anything along those lines.

> Honestly, it could be something really benign, it could be something far worse- you have two choices, you leave it and monitor it, if it gets larger/starts to impair his ear movement then you'll NEED to get it seen, or you can get it seen to right now. I'm a vet student, and having seen many types of lumps like this, typically (and I'm not saying your vet wouldn't recommend this, providing a diagnosis or anything along those lines) we'd normally advise you to have it removed and send it to pathology.

> Many owners will opt to keep an eye on it for a while, but then you essentially have a lump growing on your dog's ear that you don't know if it's malignant or not. Your choice, but as long as it doesn't affect the dog/cause any pain then that's fine as long as you're aware if it is malignant it will undergo metastasis.

Kys, yes- it can, and it does on a weekly basis. As a vet student, I have seen dogs with shards of bone causing impactions/perforations - and I have seen perfectly healthy dogs have to be put to sleep because they've eaten a raw bone which has perforated the gut.

Prior to vet school, I fed raw- I was in the same boat as any pro-raw feeder, however having now seen what raw can do to a dog myself I would not feed a bone of any kind. I want to feed raw, I want to do my third year project into the benefits of raw, but ALL of the current research on raw done by accredited sources just scream out the problems with it from bacteria plus parasites to bones.

It is just not worth the risk.

How do you prevent chewing behaviors when you're not around to intervene? Especially alternatives to crating a dog?

My pup behaves well when I'm at home, but when I go to work, he gets himself into a mess. Recently, he's gotten into the habit of knocking my papers to the floor and chews them up. I started putting papers in the bedroom but I want to get at the heart of the issue. He has toys and I get a Kong ready for him everyday when I leave. I'm usually gone for less than 5 hours a day (took a part time job this summer to be with him, but I go back to full time work in the fall). He gets 2-3 walks a day with at least one of them in an open area to run.

Again, I know crating is an option, but I'm looking for advice or behavior strategies beyond that. Thank you for the help.
>>
>>2165707

Honestly, you either remove things from him so he CAN'T get himself into a mess, crate him, or provide stimulation for the entire time you're gone.

If you're not around to praise/intervene when he knocks things over he isn't going to have a clue: he's bored, your papers look like fun and if he's teething then he's going to chew on them. You can't then tell him four hours later that he's a bad boy, because dogs live in the moment- he can't put two and two together and realise you're mad because of the mess he made four hours ago.

You could look into one of those toys that dispenses food/kongs every few hours, but honestly, crating him might be for the best. Have you got anything against crates? Used correctly, they're a fantastic tool- and then you have the safety of knowing he cannot get himself into any trouble/hurt himself whilst you're not around to supervise him.
>>
>>2165709

Thank you for the candid response. I'm not against crating, per se, just very inexperienced with it (all my dogs growing up were never crated and they seemed fine and never chewed) and wanting to know potential alternatives. I was thinking that the chewing was a result of anxiety, and that the shortened work hours would relieve some of that and help him self-sooth, but the summer time might be better spent teaching him to be quiet in a crate.

Any strategies for getting the Kong to last longer? Right now I use kibble and low fat peanut butter as a stopper, but he can drill through that in an hour or so.
>>
How many doggos is too many?
>>
>>2165723

You could always film it to see if he looks anxious or not. If it is anxiety, then your best bet is to go from the start- leave him with a kong/some distraction, and then leave the room. If he pines, then just walk towards the door- aim to keep leaving for longer periods until you know he's no longer pining whilst you're out. I do understand this isn't exactly practical for over a number of hours however!

However, having a crate would not just be good for him whilst you're out- if you ever have an emergency you have a place where you know he'll be safe, I've taught my pair to go lie in their crate to begin with when the postman/guests arrive (stops them ever accidently dashing out of the door in excitement) and if your pup ever has an operation and needs crate rest you'll thank yourself for getting him used to the crate.

As for kongs lasting longer- I've always used wet and freezed them. It takes my dogs a good half an hour to get through that, whereas they can get through a peanut butter stopper in a matter of seconds.

Do you take him for a good walk/training exercise before you leave? Five hours isn't THAT long, and in theory if you tire him out enough before you leave he should sleep for the vast majority of it. Mind, you'd then have to keep this up for the rest of his/her life.
>>
>>2165724
More than you can adequately care f for and give attention to
>>
>>2165728

Also, just to add to this- he looks pretty young right now- I'm going to guess not more than six months old. Puppies chew at that age- there's no reason why you can't crate train him now, and once he's out of the chewing phase slowly give him access to the house again.

This might sound really mean, but I downright refused to buy my second pup a 'proper' dog bed until they she was WELL out of her chewing stage (a big mistake I made with number one- lost quite a few very nice bed sheets to his teeth). As I made sure she wasn't chewing things around the house when I was in, and she was on old blankets in their crate she learnt rapidly just to chew on their toys as that's all she had access to. I've not had a problem with chewing since.

Yeah, spot on. He's about 6-7 months. It seems like most of his adult teeth are nearly finished coming in, though he is good at focusing on his toys (at least when I'm around). I take him for a walk before work, usually ~20 minutes, another after work (~30 min) and then in the evening (~40 min). A longer morning walk would probably do better.

You make some great points about crating. I'll bring it up with the SO and see if we can find a good location for it. Is it better to be in the main living area or in the bedroom?

We've always had our crates in our kitchen under the table- but that's primarily because we've got a rough collie with a rather large crate, so it was a case of finding somewhere for her that wouldn't take up THAT much room elsewhere in the house.

Just remember that walking isn't the only way to tire them out-pups at that age don't actually need that much walking, you'd do much better to go play with a ball until he drops/do some training. You don't want to overexercise a larger breed as that could lead to joint problems down the road.

Enjoy him though- he looks like a sweet pup! Pick related, this is Eira in her soft travel crate in her first few weeks home.

At my house we recently got stuck with a female rat terrier. Definitely the shittiest dog I've ever lived with. Extremely territorial and barks/growls at literally every noise she hears. She hates me especially. If she sees me once she'll bark nonstop for 20 minutes

What should I train my GSD to do? I like hiking and running. I always enjoy fishing and she loves the water. How difficult is off leash training? Would you ever do it?
>>
>>2166180
You can train a GSD to do just about anything a dog can. As someone who hikes and runs you might find it useful teaching her the commands "quick" to speed up and "slowly" to use a slower pace which is what I use with my half GSD when we are crossing the road and he is off leash. Speaking of which, he is incredibly good walking off leash but I only do this in low traffic areas and usually local to my home, it's illegal where I live to have dogs off leash outside of parks and/or in populated areas, so be wary of your local laws. You could probably even get your dog to fetch things from the water. My dog pretty much learnt every trick I taught him within minutes. He knows the basics; useful commands like sit, lay down, stop, wait and more fun things like paw (and by extension, high five, and wave when I'm at a short distance), hide (covers his face with his paws whilst laying down) turn around (one complete circular turn), and his party piece is to pretend to fall down dead when I point my fingers at him and yell BANG. Good luck with your girl, you have one smart and easily trainable breed to work with.
>>
>>2166195
Awesome info, should I start right away or give her some time to settle in to new the environment/bond etc
>>
>>2166210
If your GSD is a pupper you can begin training right away, I would start with basic stuff like sit. Bearing in mind my dog was 3 years old going on 4 and I was his second owner; it seemed more sensible to let him settle in to his new home and establish a bond of trust with me first before I began training him.
This site might be of help:
www.germanshepherdinformation.org/what-is-the-right-age-to-start-training-your-gsd/

It also has a list of commands you can teach your girl.

She's one and I'm the second owner. I think I'll settler her in and tire her out/lots of play over the next week before I start really getting into anything complicated. Thanks for the link

Sorry for your loss, anon. How old was she? I lost my boy about 5 weeks ago in a very tragic and horrifying way. He was only 15 months old, still full of life. He went from perfectly normal to foaming at the mouth and coughing up large amounts of blood in just 2 hours. Then a few hours later he was gone. Nothing I could do but be with him. Still don't know the cause. I guess be thankful that you at least know the cause and have some form of closure, it could have been worse. But still, losing a dog is really tough. I'm just now getting to where I'm okay after 5 weeks without him.

What does it mean if your dog doesn't drink from his water bowl? He has a stand for both food and water dishes since he's a large breed. Will happily eat out of food dish but will avoid water one, and I change the water twice a day. Prefers to not drink if he can't slip into the bathroom to drink from the toilet. Drinks if you give him a different bowl (like a regular cereal bowl). Do dogs not like drinking out of metallic bowls and prefer ceramic or something? I know he'll drink if he gets thirsty enough, but I want to know the reason behind his aversion to his regular bowl.

They prefer not to have water near their food, its instinct, ie a rotten carcass in a waterway.

My dog just died. Yesterday he seemed mostly fine, but didnt eat anything. Today when he went outside he just collapsed to the ground. He started breathing really heavy and wouldnt move. After about 30 minutes he seemed to be a bit better and I was able to get him inside. For about 10 minutes he seemed fine, but then he fell over and started pooping. We carried him outside and he went limp. He was only taking a breath every 3 or 4 seconds. After a minute or so it was over.

Honestly, I don't know if traumatizing is the right word but some dogs may get confused or just not react to certain names as much as they would others. Personally I think it depends on the individual dog. I'll use my own dog as an example; he came to me with the name Bruno which I don't like, it didnt suit him and I was informed that his previous owner rarely even used it (he would use whistles and clicks or whatever to get the dog to come to him etc). I made a list of names I liked and called them out at the dog, and the name he perked up at the most and that got the most reaction was the one I finally renamed him with, quite successfully in fact. He isn't in the least traumatized by this either by the way.

bloat?

sorry for your loss, anon.
>>
So I bought orijen puppy Dry food yesterday. Got told by a lady at a "holistic" petstore that claimed to have vet experience that Fromm had a better puppy food. But what I see from the ingreidents is that lot of the protein in Fromms large breed puppy food comes from peas while the Orijen bag has all meat listed up until the 10th or 11th ingredient. Is the most meat possible the best for puppies? I'd assume so but idk. she's a GSD puppy btw.

My actual vet just told me to get any food that meets AAFCO standards for nutrition for all life stages and that's pretty much what I've been doing. I hadn't specifically bought puppy food until now, worried she's permanently damaged now.
>>
>>2167071
Wouldn't be bloat. Dogs with bloat cannot settle. I don't think he would have laid down that long. Bloat also has this really bad noise associated with it, and coughing up foam.

No clue what it could be, friend. Sorry for your loss. I am sure you have him a great life.

Unless you mean yours there's nothing to fix, puppies get overexcited and nip sometimes, as do adults. If you can't handle that give her way, if you beat her like that again, give her away and never get near another living thing.

Is feeding dogs only/primarily oatmeal bad for them?

I don't do this for the record, I'm just wondering because that's what was the 'norm' for farm dogs, according to my grandmother, back when in Russia.

because your ancestors were poor and dog food, especially dog food that actually meets their nutritional needs, is a luxury.

or they were uneducated. or both.

So a relative of mine is going on a business trip across the country for a few days and has no one to watch over their pupper for the time (can't take him with them) and I agreed to watch over him.

The problem is I never had a dog before (The only pets I own are a turtle and two budgies. Not worried about them since they keep to themselves in their enclosures) and have barely any knowledge of how to care for a dog. (I have watched over him for an afternoon once, but this is for 4 full days)

Of course I know my relative is going to provide me with details of what to do and such, but anyone have any tips of how to watch over the little thing for a first time (temporary) dog owner?
He's a kind of tiny Shih Tzu mix if it helps for reference, (I'm not 100% sure of his full breed other than the fact he's tiny, fluffy and named after Chewbacca because he's the same color and just as fluffy)

My pupper (pit/lab) comes when I whistle inside but not outside, unless I have treats. How can I get the little faggot to come when I call him outside so I dont have to leash him everytime I let him out to shit?

He's about 6 months
>>
>>2167836
For walking ask your relative how his recall is (if he comes back when he is called). One is quite young and he may not be reliable yet. I don't feel comfortable walking other people's dogs off lead and if you've never had a dog before I wouldn't recommend it unless you're 99% sure he will listen to you.

Also ask him what words/noises he uses for the dog for certain actions. Like do they say "come" or their name when they want them to come over. Or is it a particular whistle.

You should also ask how he plays with other dogs (so you know whether to let them sniff or walk away), how he is with people etc. A lot of small dogs are surprisingly hostile to other dogs but obviously wouldn't do well in a fight. If you see other people with dogs ask them if they're friendly before you go up to them unless they're the same size and obviously not a problem.

For a lapdog a leashed walk around a couple of blocks should do but I've never had one so ask what he usually gets.

For dogproofing, again he's quite young so might still wreck/eat random shit when bored. Make sure the owner leaves you with his toys so he can focus his attention on them. Close the door when leaving a room so getting in there unsupervised isn't a possibility. Don't leave stuff like sunglasses on coffee tables.

If you have bins that don't have lids maybe put them up high or leave them empty while he's at yours. A surprising amount of things are toxic to dogs or dangerous for them to eat (empty toothpaste tubes, toothpicks, string). Some are just gross (sanitary pads).

Make sure chemicals and medicine are put away. Even paracetamol can kill a dog. Same for cigarette butts and nicotine supplements (patches, sprays, gums). Antifreeze, bleach, dishwashing tablets etc. all bad.

You should be fine just use common sense. Ask the owner if there's anything you should be aware of (i.e. does he particularly like chewing on cables) so you know what bad habits to look out for. Have fun.

So I'm new here, and I guess you guys must hear this question often but, I've never had a dog, I did have cat when I was growing up though. Anyway, I want to get a dog now, but I don't wanna fuck it up, what are some good books that i should read? Books about training, exercise, what food to give them etc. I'm mostly scared about potty training, like how do you do it? Do you buy a litter box if you get really young puppies, or you take them outside even then? How do you teach it to keep it in till you're on the street?

I also live in a smaller apartment, but I do have plenty of free time so exercise shouldn't be a problem. As for breeds I've been considering a Welsh Corgi, because I hear they are easy to raise, or a Shiba Inu, cause when I was a kid one of our neighbours had them and it was the best dog. A bit hard to raise from what I know though. Maybe a Pug, I don't know.

TL;DR I want to into doggos, but no experience, any recommended reading before I get into it ?
>>
>>2167981
Binge watch ZakGeorge on YouTube. Good resource for all purpose training.

You crate train to teach dogs how to hold it, and reinforce going outside with praise and treats. Can also punish going inside, but that is something people debate.

And puppies generally can hold it for am hour with every month of age. Puppies are very high maintenance.

For a first dog, DO NOT get a Shiba. It will make you it's bitch and destroy your home. Pugs are bred to the point of cruelty. Do not get one. Corgis are a great choice for a first time owner though. Expensive dogs though, so be ready for sticker shock.

You can also consider getting a retired racing greyhound, or just rescuing an adult, fully grown dog from a shelter. You don't need to get a purebred puppy to have a wonderful dog.
>>
>>2167986
What's wrong with shibas? I mean I remember that my neighbour told me that he was a bit of a smug asshole at first and he had to be walked a lot but that's it. He was really good with dogs though, I don't think that dog ever did anything bad, even little kids like me could pet it freely
>>
>>2167988
They are INCREDIBLY difficult to train, aloof, and ungodly stubborn. They also make this horrific ear liercing scream. There is nothing wrong with them, per se, but they are for advanced, experienced dog owners. They are not a suitable choice for a first time dog owner. If you get one, it will be a disaster for you.
>>
>>2167992
Ah I see.
What's a good breed for a first time owner then? As I said I also live in a smaller apartment, but I do have time to make 2-3 long walks a day
>>
>>2167994
As I mentioned, a corgi would be a great choice, but again, be ready for sticker shock. Expensive doggos Retired racing greyhounds are very popular apartment dogs. If your apartment complex had a dog run, just let him loose and tear it up for some time every day, and give him some walkies. Greyhounds are huge couch potatoes, and many anons can tell you how awesome of doggos they are. Another good choice is an older, chill shelter mutt.
>>
>>2167568
Not necessarily, definitely depends on the breed type. My dad used to give his pedigree GSD one big bowl of food a day (making sure it contained her daily nutritional allowance of course). I have a GSD/Malamute with a mostly Malamute physique, which means he has a very deep chest. As >>2167583 pointed out, feeding a deep chested dog a large meal can cause bloat so I distribute his daily allowance into 3 separate meals over the course of the day. Also it's worth noting I've been told that, for similar reasons, it's better to not take a deep chested dog out for a rigorous walk directly after feeding them as it can cause issues.
>>
>>2168016
How can I tell if my dog has a deep chest?

I eat once a day and I think it would be easier to just feed my dog at the same time I'm eating.
>>
How do I know if my dog's hungry? If she ate enough today? All I find is people saying "check her ribs and waist line", but that'll only tell me she's eaten enough in the past, nothing about today.
>>
>>2168091
Some dogs will always act hungry even if they've already eaten.

To make your dogs meals more filling without adding too many calories, you can add green beans or steamed broccoli and cauliflower. I do this for my dog she loves it.
>>
Harnesses, soft leads, or regular collars? Which is most beneficial or useful when on a walk?
>>
>>2168197
"Soft leads" are head halters, right?

I've heard people having good results with head halters, but never tried it myself. You just have to make sure to not tie them so tight the dog cannot pant.

Wouldn't bother with normal collars. Needless pressure on the trachea.

I am a big fan of harnesses myself. I like back clipped ones.
>>
>>2168197
>>2168226

Back clipped harnesses make dogs pull instinctively. I use a harness that I front clip for loose leash walking at heel then back clip on a long line for sniffing around and training. This communicates to the dog that front clipped pressure means we are doing a structured walk and no messing around. When the back clip is used he can pull all he wants and run around.
>>
So, I and my partner will soon be the proud owner of an 8 week old puppy.

My question is this: While house training the dog how do i enforce bathroom training on the pad, and how do I punish such a small puppy for failing at this?
>>
>>2168347
I mean "my partner and I"
Sorry, bit nervous.
>>
>>2168329
>Back clipped harnesses make dogs pull instinctively
People keep saying this, but I have never, ever seen this. Both my dogs do very well on back clipped harnesses. I am a big fan of them.
>>
>>2168347
Punishing a puppy for peeing in the house (accidents are inevitable) will only encourage it to be more secretive about it without really helping the actual problem. Give it a lot of praise and a treat when it pees in the right place and it'll get the point eventually. That's how people litterbox train a whippet if they live in a colder area, but don't expect 100% perfect results all the time like you would with a cat, they might miss the mark on occasion if they're unsupervised for too long (ie pee on the edge or next to the pad instead of on the pad).

If you don't want your dog to pee at all in the house, then do potty training outside from the start if you have a lawn.
>>
This anon again here
>>2167826

So today I got the little pupper over and having him in the house was fine. Taking him out on a walk however, didn't feel like I was doing it right.
I took him to the park and the first things he did was run around wanting me to chase him and stop everywhere to sniff and try to eat shit off the floor. Obviously I know he's not supposed to do that and take out anything he has in his mouth, but generally felt like he was the one taking me around, which I've been reading that shit's not good.

Any tips for keeping him in line? The owner doesn't seem to have any real attention words other than his name, and that seems to work only half the time when I try it.

Also what's the difference in taking the pupper on a walk and taking him out to shit?
(or at least how to tell the difference in him stopping to do shit or to take a shit?)

Why does my dog always eat leaves? Every time we go on walks she snatches them up. Sometimes I can get her to drop em but shes so quick. Am I not feeding her enough? She weighs 53~ pounds and she eats 3 cups of wellness adult mix whatever food a day.

Sorry for your loss man. I just lost my pup in a somewhat similar way last month. It's hard to say for sure, but it could have been bloat, ingestion of poison, something perforated or punctured in the GI tract from something he may have eaten that was sharp, or it could have been a congenital heart condition. How old was he? Any prior health problems?

I think it's just a dog thing. My Pit pup eats everything outside. Leaves, grass, sticks, pine cones, etc. I stop her when I can, but she is also fast. It's probably fine, though things like sticks can be dangerous due to splinters.

Is your carpet full of dog hair? Mine is. I've been using a squeegee to get it out but it's a tough job.

He was about 8 years old, and a little overweight at ~90lbs. Now that I think back, there was an incident about 3 or 4 months ago. There was a day where he was all wobbly and off balance any time he tried to stand up. That passed after a few hours, though. There were no other problems before or after that.

How long did it take you guys to really 'get gud' with your doggo? I mean more advanced stuff like off leash training, anticipating your commands(even possible?), and being a good boy

No because I use a vacuum like someone from the fucking 21st century.

Are Corgis and Shibas good dogs or are they meme dogs
>>

pretty sure they're just memes, and not good for first time dog owners

So I took y dog to a beach today and he managed to eat a piece of soft driftwood that I couldn't wrestle out his mouth. Since then, he's tried hacking and gagging at least twice and has calmed down for now.

How fucked is he and should I take him to a vet right away?

How do I teach my dog to catch stuff I throw?

Do you guys prefer wet or dry food? Or a little bit of both? I'd like my girl to eat better but I'm not sure how to supplement
