Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size
-parameters
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

No one would have a problem with you if you didn't have autistic fits, call people retarded, and to kill themselves for no reason. All you have to do is correct them unless they're not having it.
>>
>>2103602
what is this goofily shaped yet marvelously colored specimen? some kind of aro?
>>
>>2103602
A lot of people here are retarded and/or autistic, and that also seems to be the insult of choice for the entire community whether anon or trip.

I never told anybody to kill themselves... Though of course that gets thrown around so much here I can see why you'd make that up in your head.

Looks like some arowana that has been bred that way or purposely stunted. Also some anon said he had a dwarf bristlenose. You don't have a dwarf bristlenose you have a stunted fish.
>>
How feasible would it be to set up an aquarium with some freshwater game fish? Like some bluegills or perch? I know the general way to set uo a tabk but is it any harder or easier with these kind of fish?

Bristlenose plecos are sometimes called dwarf Bristlenose plecos in the trade for the same reason that celestial danios are sometimes called Galaxy rasboras.

Do you want to keep them long-term, or were you just thinking of growing them out and eating them?
There are aquaponics guides that use 55 gallon drums. They say you can put ten fingerlings in there and harvest when they're about a pound, 6-8 months later. Keeping the water clean without the hydroponic aspect would probably just be a matter of weekly water changes, or you can try to rig up a grow bed and grow some fruits and veggies.

I want to set up a 2 tier aquarium.
Top would have plants and a few seahorses, bottom would be a reef tank. I'm thinking 30something for the top and 90-110 for the bottom. Thoughts?
(I'm no artist, don't rip on me to bad.)
>>
>>2103987
you'll actually need quite a lot of space between the two for things like reef lighting and cooling for that lighting and access to the inside of your reef tank.

either way you'll probably need the top tank on a platform that can slide or rotate away, which will take some work since a 30g weighs about 300 lbs.

Personally I wouldn't do it, you need to get into the top of a reef tank fairly often.

I did 3 10s, two 20Ls, a 75, and a 150 a few years back but the 150 was on the floor turned sideways and the 10s were about 8 ft in the air. About a foot in between each just to vacuum the glass and move fry around.

Just a bunch of 2x4s and metal brackets attached to 4x4s bolted into a concrete floor. Probably around 3000 lbs in all

So I just started working at a local pet store a few weeks ago, not much an expert on fish or aquarium technicalities or any of that, my smarts are with reptiles and amphibians.

That being said, one of the girls in the aquarium department offered for me to help her get some fish and crabs out of our saltwater aquarium for some lady.

Lol guys this lady was fucking crazy. She got an Emerald Crab, a red-something'd Hermit Crab, a Hawk Fish, and a Yellow-Tailed Damsel. On top of that, she got a baby Pleco and some other freshwater fish (I wasn't there when she got those). And like 8 pounds of live rock. My manager asked if she had any other fish in the aquarium, and she told us that this was her second batch after her boyfriend "forgot to put salt in the fishes' water".

Like how does that even happen? I've never even owned fish since I was a little kid, much less a saltwater tank, but this is crazy. She said she was putting them all in a 20 gallon tank. Like I said, I'm no fish expert, but I feel like that might be too small. And I'm pretty sure she bought the salt for the tank with these fish. Aren't you supposed to have that shit set up before you put them in there?

She kept asking if she could return them if they died, but we have a no-return policy with saltwater fish specifically. My manager even told her that she was taking a gamble with the purchase and everything because of the policy, but she was adamant on buying all of these fish. She wanted an urchin and a sea star we had there too, but they were new and still getting acclimated and weren't for sale yet. She told me that she heard that "those spiky things" shoot their quills at fish and eat them.

Yeah that's how it goes at the pet store, nothing I don't understand. I just thought it was crazy and wanted to know if this shit triggered people with actual knowledge of saltwater tanks.
>>
>>2104173
just makes me laugh is all.

all of those animals are going to die anyways, it's just going to be a lot quicker with her.

but you don't really have time to interview and educate every person that walks through the door, and I doubt the owners want you stopping sales.

At my store we have a 14 day guarantee, but we can waive it at our discretion. There are red flags to signal that we should ask questions, and it only takes a couple quick questions to know whether or not it's worth waiving the guarantee.
>>

>>
>>2104206
yeah, most of the stores I buy from don't have any guarantees on saltwater. You gotta figure most of their business comes from people that will kill the animal immediately and then come back for more.

I mean, I'm pretty good at keeping saltwater critters alive so my lfs doesn't see me buying livestock more than once or twice a decade.

they made a lot more money off me when I didn't know what I was doing. I was in there all the time.
>>
>>2104212

Yeah you should NEVER mix seawater salt mix in a tank with live stock. That dry salt is caustic as fuck since it also has soda ash and sometime calcium hydroxide and that needs to be fully mixed before adding to the aquarium.

I alway mix my water in a vat and wat 24hrs before using it.

Unnrelated, just got this bad boy fullfaced scuba mask, gonna take it during my aquarium maintenance dive in. Fucking having to clear a mask ever.

I've seen things like that happen but generally *most * people do their research before spending alot of money on saltwater fish.

Alot of clients I have started out with the "nemo" phase and moved up to reefs and scaless rays and sharks predatory tanks.
Just gotta be patient and give the best information you can even to people who may seem to be idiots . People who have success are the ones who become repeat customers.

Also I realize that photo was pretty shit so made another less shit photo of that 2nd stage/mask.

>How did you get such a mossy snail that didn't have it's siblings clean it off.

Lazy ass snails. I dunno. It's a 30g FOWLR and there's 3 snails in there. There was 4, but the 4th got stuck between a few rocks and died there. So now there's 3 snails roaming around with enormous afros. Ever since I redid the layout, they haven't left the rocks to patrol the glass like they used to. Maybe they can't see through their fros? I dunno. They grew those massive fros first, then the tank started growing the stuff here and there.
>>
>>2104201
>Is there even a single "internet celebrity" from 4chan?

Depends. Not of all of them can credit 4chan with their fame, but they were famous on 4chan at some point. Creepy Chan got famous and ended up on America's Next Top Model. Lolichan got famous for being screwed up by 4chan and is really well known for being a media favorite. They love writing stories about her because it's dramatic. I believe Bailey Jay was posting on 4chan him/herself before going pro.

4chan is responsible for launching people to fame, as well. For example, all that Gamergate shit and that stupid girl would be nothing if it weren't for 4chan... And there are so, so many memes started here that launch nobodies into superstars - even the potato retard girl.

i dont remove the eggs. they are probably eating some of them, but when they lay them in the moss, they probably just cant get to them as easily. im definitely not getting huge clutches or anything, but there are plenty that make it. i didnt start the tank with the intent to breed, they just kind of got busy on their own. also, they are harem spawners. i have 3 females and one male in their tank. i move any new males to my community tank or sell them to the lfs
>>
How do fish even survive if they eat their own young?

My Danios are spawning weekly but I never see any eggs.
>>
>>2104603
In a tiny box of water with fish that will eat anything they won't. In the wild they have more space. Provide more hiding places for the fry. Floating plants and moss is a good start.
>>
>>2104603

Unrelated story -
I used to rule the Reptile & Amphibian Generals. I made every thread as they died and made most of the helpful posts for over a year. Then I got banned for cruelty to animals or such. It was very non-specific. I had no idea what I did. But in the process, they deleted all my posts going back a week a so. These were long, helpful posts. Probably cumulatively 12+ hours of writing. After that, I went to a forum where expertise and advice is genuinely appreciated. I still come by /an/ now and then to kill a few minutes, but without the trip code.

Implying your posts aren't just baseless assertions or google search content + you calling people autistic and listing a bunch of tank sizes
>>
>>2104637
Come on bugguy. We know why you were banned.
>>
>>2104648

Not bugguy :) Bugguy was more of an all-arounder. He visited all the threads. I pretty much stuck to all the reptile/snake ones.

Besides, I'm sure Bugguy is still around. Probably just dropped the trip code. You can't really ban anyone based on IP. The practice is like putting someone in time out. Just long enough for your to load up a different IP.

For me, that's 10 minutes. Log out of my 4Chan Pass, disconnect my VPN, waiting 10 minutes for the 4chan Pass cooldown, and reconnect, automatically given a fresh IP. 4CP circumvents the rule about not posting from VPNs. It's nothing. Other forums are much easier since they don't have cooldowns.

I've had the same experience with gardneris kept them in a 20h that was relatively heavily planted and even with a mix of corries and tetras in addition to them i still ended up with fry making it to adulthood at a decent rate. other killis though are harder to breed.

recently i picked up a group of least killii (Heterandria formosa not realy a killi) they're a fun live bearing nano fish that i'm planing on using as feeders once i get a colony going.

Have a spare tank lying around I'm thinking of using for breeding.

What should my first breeding project be? Amanos, Glowlight tetra or zerbra danios?
>>
>>2104666
Amanos would be extremely difficult to breed as the larvae need high salinity brackish water, which is then shifted to freshwater as they grow older.
Glowlight tetra eggs and fry are sensitive to bright light, but otherwise unfussy.
Zebra danios are about as easy and straightforward as you can get for egg scatterers.
For any egg laying fish, you're going to need a source of extremely small food to start the fry off on. Buying commercial foods such as Micro Pearls, culturing infusoria, or using dense, mature plant growth such as java moss are options.

I've seen solid red colour Neocardina called "cherry shrimp" but I've also seen these called cherry shrimp and anything that is solid red, even if that red is pale "sakura"

Actually, your danios literally DO survive because they eat all their eggs.

All that protein they shit out and fertilize is a big deal. Its an evolutionary thing. They need to reproduce but they need that protein back too.

With all egglayers, it's very simple to breed them. Just make them happy and fat and then take them out of the tank. You'll have a hundred fry in two weeks.

>>
>>2104748
Thats a really nice simple tank, how do you deal with the water quality without a filter or air stone?
I was told that to keep shrimp you need at least some water flow.
>>
>>2105305
Pea puffers are rather involved for a beginner fish (need live/frozen food, messy, need to be good about water changes).

Betta would be easy if you can keep the tank above 76F. If you need a heater a 25 watt one on eBay is $8 or so.

2-3 Endlers would be pretty easy, but only get males. The tank isn't big enough for them to have babies.

Cherry shrimp are pretty easy for most people, but others have a lot of trouble with them.

Nerite snails are virtually indestructible.

2-3 African dwarf frogs would be fine in there. Stores sell dry pellets for them, but they do a lot better on live or frozen food.

There are several other options, but they're either more difficult to take care of or hard to find.
>>
>>2105112
Garras are mostly territorial, depending on the species. But even the most docile ones are territorial.
>>
>>2105159
what was your set up?

>>2105240
shrimp don't become depressed they do become stressed though. give them time, stably water and plenty of hiding places and plants and they will bounce back.
>>
>>2105341
The plants are enough to keep the tank cycled. I've been testing the water every three days or so to make sure, because I'm paranoid.
So far, nitrates have never gotten above 40-ish. It's just two shrimp and a snail in there, so the bioload is really low.

Walstad came up with a guide specifically for setting up unfiltered shrimp bowls. The most important part is having floating and/or emersed plants, since their a lot more efficient at cleaning and oxygenating the water.
>>
>>2105377
plants are bioload too.

>got two recently-hatched clownfish in my new tank

I have small pellets and frozen food. The pellet sink quickly to the bottom of the tank, and the clownfish don't seem to want to pick food off of the sand bed. Is this normal? they ate the pellets before when they were floating in the water.

I have two blue-legged hermit crabs I put in at the same time yesterday too. All are first additions. Could the clownfish be being wary of them?
>>
>>2105443
they're used to eating whatever they were fed by the person that raised them.

it takes them a while to figure out that the new food is food.

like a week or two usually.
>>
>>2105446

Okay, cool. The frozen food is fine, but that floats a while in the tank water where they seem more comfortable eating. I'll give it time and see if they eat off the sand bed after a few more feeds of the pellets.

Any signs of distress I should watch out for in clownfish? They were hugging one corner yesterday but as soon as the lights went out they were all over the tank. Now they're sticking to the tank front a bit, but apart from that look really energetic for now, hardly seem to stop. All my parameters and water flow are good.
>>
>>2105448
most marine fish I've had won't eat off the bottom.

plants consume nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia so they do in fact cycle the tank exactly like bacteria with the exception that they turn nitrate into biomass thus reducing the need for water changes.

all living things in the tank count as bioload, including plants, algae, bacteria, fungi....

also plants consume oxygen and give off co2 in normal respiration, so they absolutely compete with animals for oxygen as well as producing it.

If you'd like more information you can google the words "bioload" and "plant respiration," or I'd be happy to link the Wikipedia articles for you to read.
>>
>>2105621
>Websites that mention the term "bioload" only talk about life forms that put ammonia into the water
yes, there's a great deal of misinformation on the web.

part of what I like to do here is correct it.
>At night, when animals don't need as much anyway.
Most plants respire at the roots constantly, and to a lesser extent at the leaves constantly.

it's true the net effect is to produce oxygen during the day, but they're consuming it as well.
>>
>>2105618
>all living things in the tank count as bioload, including plants, algae, bacteria, fungi....
>you can google "bioload"
Websites that mention the term "bioload" only talk about life forms that put ammonia into the water, which dead plant matter does, but not healthy, live plants. Or they specifically only mention animals.

>also plants consume oxygen and give off co2 in normal respiration

Yeah, other results start like that, then list a bunch of animals and talk about ammonia production.
It's all semantics at this point anyway. Common usage refers to ammonia load, which is why uneaten food is considered included.

depends on your lfs. theres a really good one near me that will buy livestock and plants from me almost every time i call them. there are others in my area that will buy, but they give shit prices and wont always take my stuff. i dont make a ton of money, but im pretty sure i technically profit a little bit after food and electricity/water costs. craigslist works too, but i usually just take whatever i have up to the shop to save myself the time and hassle of dealing with cl weirdos. i think you should set up a propagation tank if you have the means. throw some breeding groups/pairs of killis or apistos in it with whatever plants youre doing. they tend to fetch a decent price for me, and they typically have decent sized clutches.

I've tried and the hardest part is just finding some fucker who's actually willing to meet up with you. People will pay three times as much for the sake of getting the same plant at the store because they're paranoid about parasites or some shit and somehow think a store is a safer bet.

Does anyone know what causes different bamboo shrimp colours?

Mine has just shed and developed this really bright white line down her back she never had before.

Pic isn't mind but similar. Not all of them seem to have this white line but seems like they can just spontaneously develop it.
>>
>>2105928

Those, yes. And wow, I bought them from the LFS assuming they were one of the snails they referred to to help as a cleanup crew. (there was a staff changeover while serving to be fair).

>>2105944

I'll give it a shot. It's a marine tank, just letting you know.
>>
>>2105975
Those are "Assassin" snails. They don't eat any kind of plant or algae. They feed on small gastropods or carrion. They will kill any snail smaller than themselves and are very good at destroying every single pest snail in your tank.

They will breed and after a year you'll end up with quite a few, but they tend to remain under the substrate or hiding in the aquarium. If a fish dies they can consume it overnight and you will never find any remains.

So they won't touch diatoms? Okay, I'll probably be getting more cleanup crew soon anyway. The bloom is not too bad, stuck to the rocks here and a little bit on the glass.

I dislike those tiny nuisance snails but I don't have anything like down now so soon after cycling which basically killed any hitchhickers.

The bumblebee can stay, sounds like a welcome addition. I only have one of them at the moment.

Should I get a CPO?

What's the minimum they need? I have a 5 gallon tank lying around with a heater and filter.

They're illegal in my country and someone is selling babies on ebay as "Mexican shrimp" so I just want to get one because they're banned basically.

I have 3 other tanks that are much larger but I hear they're a one man genocide.

I can also get hold of Procambarus Alleni which are sold under the name "Cobalt blue lobster" at my LFS

You have Assassin snails in salt water?

Aren't they freshwater only? Are they still alive?

Ah. That's different, then. Both of the snails mentioned previously are exclusively freshwater, though it does look like skater bumblebee snails are also mostly carnivores.
>>

>>

I don't think it's assassin snails if those are freshwater only. The pic of the bumblebee was here >>2105985 and here's an infopage http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=497+2857+565&pcatid=565

>>2105987
I think what you said about carnivorous behaviour still applies to this species apparently, based on that page above.

>'Though peaceful, keep in mind that the Bumble Bee Snail is a carnivore. If there is insufficient food, the Bumble Bee Snail may feed on other snails in your aquarium or indiscriminately consume polychaetes whether beneficial or the more troublesome bristleworm.'

I have an 18 gallon tank that's been unused for a while. I may need to get some equipment, but it's still good. I'm thinking of starting it up soon. What are some memefish and memeplants that are easy to care for?
>>
>>2105992
>what you said about carnivorous behaviour still applies
yes, marine bumblebee snails are the same in that regard. They eat dead meat.

getting rid of diatoms in a marine tank mostly just means waiting for sponges to start growing on the live rock.

usually takes a couple weeks.
>>
How can I safely lower the pH of the fresh saltwater I want to use to do a water change? Just realised my tank pH is in the 8.0 range while my waterchange pH is in the 8.2 - 8.4 range. Granted I only have clownfish which are in this range and it's only a 20% water change, but I'm curious.

I'm adding it in doses every so often as we speak.
>>
>>2106018

Thanks for the heads up. The diatom isn't too much of a bother, just assumed the snail would start chewing in to it, but no big deal. I'll wait then. I've had a few diatom rearing before, never gets bad and goes soon enough.

>>

8.2-8.4 is the range full marine saltwater is supposed to be. Your tank water is actually on the low side if its only 8.0, but thats not far off. how much live rock do you have? do you have crushed coral in your filter or substrate?

Regardless, adding the water all at once will be fine, as long as your not doing like a 90% water change...
>>
>>2106086

I have 7kg live rock to 54 gallons of water (about 1lb per 1gal). I don't actually have crushed coral in the cannister filter. It came with three types of filter media - typical dark-grey sponge, some white soft cotton-wool like material, and dozens of these solid white rings that feel like rough chalk - I'm not really sure what each media was classed as, I didn't pay it too much mind as I only have a few hardy clownfish in the tank atm. I guess the pH is a bit low, I won't worry so much about the higher pH RO water then.

I heard one comment on an aquarium forum that maybe cannister filters can cause low pH issues in marine tanks, so maybe that's a factor.

I've sold 2 inch discus all over the greater metropolis where I live, and while I made several thousand dollars it also cost me several thousand dollars and took a lot of my time.

I'm pretty sure you'd make more money in the long run by simply working at macdobalds.

If you're talking about shrimp or mollies or plants (?...) you should just kill yourself.
>>
>>2106090
I would definitely get more live rock in there if I were you. Helps with filtration a TON too. I aim for 1.5 to 2 lbs per gallon. in my "30g" nano cube I actually only have 16 gallons of water from rock and coral displacement. Crushed coral helps with Ph buffering a ton as well, so you may want to look into that, its much cheaper than buying more liverock. Although you can just buy dead rock if you want.
Never heard of cannisters lowering Ph, interesting. But I have never used a canister either soooo
>>
>>2106101
>never heard of cannisters(?) lowering ph
Not a marine guy at all, but over time the nitrogen cycle lowers ph and if your canister is getting fed fresh RO water than it will definitely lower the ph in a tank with only 15 lbs of live rock in a 55 gallon tank (54...? What?(not even close to 1 lb live rock per gallon?))
>>
>>2106098

I was the one arguing with the tripfag.

I've been keeping fish for most over 30 years. I was breeding discus before isa was born. Now I keep marine tanks just because I like a challenge and freshwater doesn't do it for me anymore.

isa is an idiot. half of what it says is wrong and the rest is insulting. It brags a lot but doesn't post pics of its many tanks.

it's not going to last here. it had one friend on this board and it managed to chase me off too.

you really don't have to try with cherry shrimp as long as nothing can eat them.
>>
>>2104019
Sea grass is a plant, but there are a lot of macro algaes that look like plants as well such as caulerpas and halimedas. Just like in a natural freshwater planted, a saltwater planted can have a wide diversity of marine algaes that can give color and life to an aquarium.
>>
>>2106386

I actually like your tank. The glass could get some treatment before the hardwater stains set in, and I'd saw a bit of that large stick hanging out like that(could be a hazard if someone bumped into it), then you could put an airplant on it. But your plants seem to be doing fine and have a lot of hiding spots for your fish, and the random sticks surfacing the water gives it a truly natural habitat feel like you actually cut off section of a pond and to witness what goes on in it, Good job.

Can I add two dwarf puffers and a pleco to a well decorated 20 gallon that already has 4 mollies? (and 3 shit-goldfish that were my sacrificial cycling fish but they survived)

I plan to feed small snails and bloodworms to the puffers and veggies to the pleco. They are the only two fish that call to me, but idk if it is smart to keep them together.
>>
>>2106445
No. Puffers really shouldn't be kept with anything else. Especially in such a small tank
>>
>>2106436
Yep.
>>
>>2106445
The tank is rather small for most plecos, but dwarf puffers are unlikely to bother one. They're far more likely to chase and bite at the mollies and goldfish. If you moved them out it should be a decent setup.

Here's a list of small plecos (≤4.5").

CPOs are small and dopey. They'd pobably kill anything they catch, but catching it in the first place is a stretch.
5 gallons is big enough for a trio of them. The heater isn't going to hurt anything, but you probably don't need it unless you house gets below 18C.

P. alleni get huge by comparison and are much, much more aggressive. One would need a 24 inch tank to itself.

My parents got some fishtank guy to clean their fishtank and the day that it happened they lost two big sliver sharks that stated swimming upside down and floating. It's been two days and this morning they also lost an albino shark. I've checked the levels and they're all normal, the temperature is fine and they're getting enough oxygen. I don't know how to check if the filter is all good, but all of the fish have been really lethargic and aren't swimming around all the time like they used to.
I don't know what else to check to find the cause and I don't know if more fish will die.
