I drove from Crescent City CA to San Fransisco and I ended-up being later and dicks because I couldn't keep myself from stopping to look at the redwüds every opportunity I had. I spent the whole day wandering around redwüd groves in awe. By the time I was on the PCH, starving and running out of gas, everything out there was closed. I almost died. Got into San Fran at like 10pm, starving.

I think everyone should see the redwoods at least once in their lives. Thousands of years old, only found in California and a little bit of Oregon, and the largest trees in the world. OP's pic I'm pretty sure is Hyperion, the world's tallest tree. Pic related is General Sherman, the world's largest tree. The costal redwoods are the tall ones and are found along the coast, and the giant sequoias and the wide ones and are found more inland towards the Sierra Nevadas. See both if you can! Definitely my favorite trees of all time.

No, the fungal super organusm you've heard about is in China, and it's literally a fungi.

The forest posted is really all those trees reproducing asexually (cloning) and then all of them being connected by their root system. Which means that all of those trees' DNA is the same and they all share a same root system, which is why under certain conditions it is considered a single organism. It really isn't, however.

extreme. routinely around 0ºF (or less) and summers are routinely over 100º, humid as fuck and skeetoes and flies are bad. not much snowfall though, but i guess snowclouds don't really form when it's -20º

Yes. Some of the tallest trees on Earth are the Kapok, which is found in South America, Africa and Southeast Asia. It's native to both SA and Africa but not Se Asia. Many Eucalyptus species are also some of the tallest species on Earth.

not really. once you get to SF that's pretty much it from there south. there might a few stands or groves here and there, but north of san fran is where all the good redwood forests are.

tips for PCH: a lot of it is WAY away from civilization. i know it doesn't seem possible, but it is. bring food and water. you'll have no mobile/cell service for most of it (if you're taking it all the way up) and there will be precious few gas stations. so make sure you plan well. the road is really windy so you'll get tennis elbow just driving it. take it slow, don't run out of gas!

also, have pee bottles ready justin case
