Here's where being clueless comes in. What do you plug an amp into? What are you using to play music through your amp to your headphones? My phone is my source of music. Willing to use different source though. Sorry if it's hard to understand what I'm confused about.
I believe the amp connects to a computer or something and the headphones connect to the amp, you play music through your computer pretty much. There are headphones that dont require an amp if you are going to be using your phone, more ohms require an amp.

You can get portable amps to hook up to your phone. They ain't perfect, but unless you're an audiophile I doubt your files are of high enough quality to notice a difference.
Google for the Fiio E portable series. They have a decent price/quality ratio. Blowing more than 150 bucks on it isn't worth it if you're a casual listener.
