Easier said than done. There aren't any vets in my area who treat exotic animals. Only dogs, cats and livestock. It can be very difficult to find a vet who treats birds and reptiles, if you live in smaller cities.

Take it to the vet meme is only applicable to dogs, cats, and horses. Bird vets are uncommon. Rat, mouse, gerbil, and chinchilla vets are rare. Snake and reptile vets are rare too.

Reptiles, in some ways, are very fragile creatures in that they need particular diets, temperatures, environments, etc. It could be that the lizard was sick from the start--MANY ARE when bought from a pet store, sorry to say. Place him into his tank/cage with the heat lamp on, plenty of fresh water and food available, and wait. He "may" pull out of it is he's still strong enough to...but you may have to be ready to say goodbye if he's not.

Some of the better vet locations do have exotic animal specialists, but sadly these are few and far between. You could try making a few calls to other offices, but this may be the best that you can do for your lizard now...

I am a 4th year (human) medical student. Your lizard is almost certainly dying of congestive heart failure. Take it to the vet and have it euthanized immediately. They can put it to sleep right away. If that's not an option, (this is gruesome but will prevent your animal from suffering) take a very sharp knife and decapitate it. When an animal experiences congestive heart failure, they die very slowly, unable to get enough oxygen. It feels like they are drowning. Trying to 'nurse it back' is cruel and selfish at this point, please put it to sleep immediately.

I'm No.17154310...and I'm sincerely sorry that Kami passed away! *Sigh* Remember what positive things you enjoyed about having Kami in your life--cherish them--and give your lizard a burial. Seven years IS a good, long life for a chameleon and, if he seemed happy/content for the majority of them, then there's nothing to regret...
