It's a shame Avatar ended up so vanilla and boring. Cameron actually had some cool ideas for it that would have made it a much better movie. For example:

-Female Na'Vis didn't have breasts or wear tank-tops because they were not mammals at all. Marketing and higher-ups cut it off for fear of audiences being confused by the lack of the classic sexual dyphomorfism

-Jake and the Na'Vi were suposed to be beaten by the Humans and retreat along with the nature god-hivemind thing to regroup during the course of a second movie and finaly beat the Humans in a third. Kind of in a LORT way. But both Cameron and 20th Century Fox were afraid of not being able to greenlight the sequels so they moved it to a single movie plot.

I hate that the ecosystem of Pandora is super interesting and actually looks alien, all of the animals have six limbs, four eyes and nostrils on their chests, along with those weird antenna things. It actually feels like a real alien environment with animals that followed a unique evolutionary path. They clearly put a lot of thought into their design and the ecology.

But then, rather than having the Na'Vi be a sentient evolution of that basic template, as is the case with humans on Earth, they gave them four limbs, two eyes, nostrils on their faces and their weird antenna are now dreadlocks.

BULLSHIT

You can't even claim convergent evolution because there's no way they share a common evolutionary ancestor with the other species. At minimum their nostrils should be on their fat tits, they should have four eyes and a second pair of vestigial arms.

They're not well designed, they're shit, all so the normies could get off to them. Fuck that, make the same movie but with the Prawns from District 9, let's see if people shed a tear for the plight of the innocent natives when the MC is making out with a tentacle-faced insectoid horror.

I like their proportions too.
They're not just blue humans with funny facial features as if pulled from Star Wars or Star Trek, they're weirdly tall and lanky to boot.

The beginning of the movie also mentions a few internal features, like naturally reinforced skeletons, which is a nice extra touch.

The kicker is that four arms and especially four eyes wouldn't even have been something that made them offputting to most people; that shit crops up in mythological artwork often enough and it would have done a lot to make them tie in to the fictional biology better. Looking fairly human because "convergent evolution" I'm okay with, and it's a good limb layout for scrambling and climbing and so on, but the eye and limb count deviation is just lazy as shit. Hell, given the density of forest another set of arms would be pretty useful for letting you use tools while climbing. I can even buy giving them noses on the face at a stretch, since scenting your food is useful and those structures are just sensory spinoffs of the alimentary tract so if they have mouths it's not like there's no basis, but if you've come up with a reason for side-mounted stuff there's no reason not to retain some spiracles down their sides or something.

On an unrelated note I'm scrapping Enemy Space. The problems with it combined with almost universally negative feedback have compounded to the point where I'm incredibly unhappy with it, and I don't care enough to go back and re-write it to make it less shit. Instead, I'm going to do another chapter of Xeno High, because I've been neglecting that one. After that I'm starting something new from scratch. Kek, that would actually be a fun scenario to do as a one-off. Fits really well with canon too. In their natural environment Sha'dee girls are really aggressive in pursuing a mate. There's not enough males to go around so they have to compete to breed successfully. Weaker females will attach themselves to a stronger one, knowing that when the more dominant female attracts a mate, they will get a chance to breed too, and this translates into pack structure when hunting/fighting. So you'd have a squad of females acting as wingmen for their leader, knowing that if she can lure this poor unwitting bastard into their nest, they'll get a turn too.

Any setup like that can be an excuse/opportunity to play around with their perceptions of humans both as aliens and as aliens whose views may be being colored by learning more from porn and romcoms than is entirely advisable. Also works perfectly well with fantasy species and in a more mundane setting interracial/intercultural interaction.

Plus that particular example of a refugee or something would probably have scope for introspective character building. Realization that someone was vulnerable in a way that never occurred to you, and that your group took advantage of that even if it was unintentional and didn't have negative consequences this time, can be fairly fertile ground for exploring how a character or communities sense of ethics and fairness works as well as their general culture, plus providing a motive for reaching out that leads in to character development and relationship building.
