At the same time, though, I think the bias comes from how some OCs are only for pornographic purposes and there's less to discuss about them. These are 2 of the main characters for my space opera story; Vara is a prince from a matriarchal alien race who is on the run, and Keiji is an assassin that was sent by the space Yakuza to kill the main character but decides to join her instead.

Here's an idea for a OC I had, gonna use >>847564 template to describe her a bit.
Basically she's a harpy thief who got caught and sent to jail, I figured I could get a neat design out of that. I'd like her general design to be modeled after the feather pattern of a zebra finch, like pic related, but with a normal human mouth rather than a beak.

That's understandable, you might want to look up gesture drawing, it helps loads with proportions. Even when heavily referencing, it's nice to break down the components of the drawing instead of just trying to copy from the reference.

I do that when I'm just drawing something without any refs, but trying to block out a thing that already exists is a bit harder and just requires more practice...I'm not that great at anatomy yet so I just kinda have to copy what I see and tweak it as best I can.

Like for this I was using a Dmitrys pic but toning down the muscle and changing things a bit here and there.

Dmitry's work is kind of over-stylized, I wouldn't suggest using his works as reference if you're still learning the ropes of anatomy. I'd suggest porn stills or photos instead, though it can be harder finding the pose you want.

The doodles look a bit flat, which happens often when you don't deconstruct first -- pic related is a bit what you could aim for, as far as deconstruction goes. If you have access to digital tools, you could try "tracing" over the desired reference, and I put it between quotations because you'd be focusing on drawing the shapes of the body instead of just the outline. You can practice this kind of deconstruction with pics irl too, though it's a bit messier. I used to do it with local newspaper photos and a permanent marker, just to figure out what shapes came easier to draw.

Sorry if it seems overbearing, but I've seen more beginners suffer from too-strict copying more often than I've seen them grow from it.

And blocking out everything only works for things I already know sorta how to draw...it's not going to help much for a pose I've never done because I have no idea how anything is supposed to look, so once all the circles are made I've got nowhere to really go from there except to go back to copying and trying to force that upon the blocking layer.

I'm not even that much of a beginner, just that no one really taught me anything despite me actually taking art classes.

Left I copied a pose, right I drew from my head...so nothing is really consistent for me either way.

You need to step away from referencing as heavily as you are doing now, because there's not much of a discernible difference between referenced and unreferenced, and at the level you are, that's not really a compliment. You have the problem many beginners do, you want to leap into dynamic poses but you haven't practiced the basics enough, not in a MEANINGFUL way. I can draw one pose over and over a hundred times, and learn nothing from it if I don't understand why I'm doing it.

Let's try a different approach: look up gesture drawing and try 1-minute sketches. Loosen your lines, which have become stiff from copying what you're referencing. It will help you grasp proportions more naturally, this is an exercise where you don't deconstruct, but try to convey gesture. The short timer on the sketches will force you not to copy the reference, but to simply get the loose feeling for it.

You are locked in the mindset that a reference is something you're meant to copy, because you don't deconstruct and study it. The way you respond to me every time shows as much:

"No, I can't, because I can't look past the blocked area"
"I can deconstruct, but I can't go beyond that, I'd have to copy anyway"
"I do this for a reason"
"This is not useful to me so I'm not going to try it."
"I can't."

It's not that my advice won't help you, its that you think you're beyond the help this specific exercise will give you, so you've blocked it out. You're at the mental place beginners are when you tell them "the way to improve is to draw more:" you already draw plenty, so the advice must be wrong, or it must not work for you. I could give you wildly different advice and you wouldn't give it weight, either.

You've got the potential, but the problem here is your attitude. You locked yourself in your ways, and you need to break from them and try different things to improve. At this point I'm sure even drawing from life would benefit you more than the stiff way you're using references.

Honestly, the few times I looked into the OC thread to see if there were some requests waiting to be done (because again, the drawthread anons would just direct people there), I didn't really find that many? I saw a lot of the same OCs being drawn by the drawfriends in the thread, and lots of trading. I read through it on a few different occasions and I got the general feeling it's a very closed-off place, a group of anons and drawfriends who already know each other and doodle for known OCs.

It's not particularly inviting for requests, and Veganon's attitude in this thread is pretty much the sensation I got from the OC thread: "we know how to draw, and we draw for each other; anyone who wants something drawn without contributing is a beggar and we are above you." I realize Veganon might just be a bit of a rotten apple in that regard, but it's the general vibe the thread gives to an outsider. I've been drawing for 4chan threads for fun on and off for two years now, and I see nothing wrong with people requesting art in a thread where it's supposedly welcome (though from what people mention there's been some rude requesters here and there, which might explain some of the hostility).

I've been thinking about why requests don't happen often on the thread, even between the community (though it could all happen in the discord, I wouldn't know) and I think I at least came up with an explaination of why I didn't do many requests.

One is because I take forever to draw, so at first I felt like I should draw something to post, and then request something and cycle like that.

With the talk about people "not contributing to the thread", I think somehow my mind subconsciously came up with "If I'd like people to draw my characters, I'd need to contribute by showing them off, but there has to be drawings of them with it, just more info wont do anything"

So anytime I draw my ocs and give info about them, that post would become like a request. So really idk. Maybe the reason why traditional requests don't happen anymore is because of people doing the same thing I did or something, though it's unknown since I don't know many people at all.

I feel posting my shit here was pointless since people are just talking shit now :/

I'm just going to say, as someone who saw the /aco/ oc thread at thread number #4 and passively lurked up to #70, I watched it slowly morph from what this thread is trying to be (a place to request your OC being drawn in lewd scenarios) to deviantart-lite, where there was mostly conversations about each other's characters and what they'd wear on prom night.
