I know some people were annoyed by the lack of content, but I just want to say Summertime Saga looks pretty promising. I treated the current release as more of a "proof of concept" than any kind of demo or what have you.

The art is good, the colours are very pleasing, the map and the layout is easy to understand and the item select highlight makes finding on screen clickable items very quick. A lot of these /weg/ + /stg/ + western h games, some times you'll be left wondering where to click or where to go but I can see that's not going to be an issue with SS.

When I first heard about it from /weg/, I was like "Ehhh incest...", but playing the demo I see that that's a few options out of a good handful of girls to chase, which I'm totally fine with.

I think if it's left to cook in the oven for about 6 months, they'll really have something on their hands with it. Which is pretty shocking considering the guy behind it does both the art and the code, which are normally two talents you simply don't have in the same person.

I know optimistic praise is frowned upon around these parts when it comes to the development of games, but I'll just say that I'm just speaking for myself, and say that at least I'm impressed.

As for new patreons every day, so what? The more the merrier. It gives us, as consumers, the option of picking the game that fits our fetishes best. Competition also will force patreon creators to improve. People say patreons are milking money and delaying, well, as more and more emerge, those tactics could result in those patreons losing their support.

I believe Patreon is here to stay. It's garnered more support for western developers than any other system I've seen, and there are more projects in the works than at any point I can remember.

Even so, you mention you saw 4 attempts in the past few days, well, I don't know many Patreons that achieved thousands of dollars in a week. It takes time for a project to gain an Internet presence and bring in patrons. If you hit $500 in the first month, you're doing well. There are exceptions, but those are just that, exceptions.

Also, you can't compare every patreon to the top earners. For every 5-7k Patreon, there are A LOT of 100-200 dollar patreons. That's how it has been for awhile now.

I don't think I've seen a more unappealing art in my life, yet here we are. Now if that game was made in unity or a highly defined Renpy I could forgive it but it's literally fucking RPG Maker VX ACE. That's about the laziest as you can be. Regardless, the weg devs make a shit load more amount of money for their projects which allows them to get more assets. It seriously can be difficult to make something when you have barely any funding which is why I try to respect these devs who actually try yet gain little to nothing. Do you know how expensive it is to get a piece of art done with a background and a character? I used to make games of that manner and they could easily reach $100 per scene. Really the only devs that matter in my eyes are Cypress, YT, TF and Masq.

This is why I love weg, you can actually have reasonable discussions here without getting your head bit off.

Personally, I would use Unity. It's pretty great for 2D stuff. Apparently U4, with their Blueprint system, is actually even easier to use if you're looking for stuff that doesn't require optimisation, but I can't speak for that directly.
RPGMaker is all based on the same engine they were distributing as shareware on CDs 20 years ago, and it feels like it. Even Bethesda would find it too antiquated. The only reason it still gets traction is because it's pretty much the only thing Nips can use.

I'm actually really hype for Summertime Saga. The art's great (though he could work on the faces a lot more) and there's so many characters so far, and I wanna fuck them all.
These games rarely get finished, so I won't get my hopes up, but if it lives up to what it's promising, it'll be fantastic.
