I know the feeling.

I've been having a strange debate in my head lately. It essentially boils down to:

What's the most important part of written erotica?

In defining "written erotica" I'm including our silly fetish stories which, while not necessarily fitting the strictest definitions, fulfill a similar role much of the time.

In a normal story it's usually a balance of strong plot and interesting characters. However that may not be the focus in erotic fiction. Often character and story elements are sacrificed so the sexual / fetish aspects can be jammed in. This doesn't always work organically (especially as the fetish scenario grows more intricate or outlandish). So it becomes a strange balancing act.

What is the best balance? Is there a hierarchy of importance?

Obviously there are a lot of subtler parts of storytelling to consider, but this is the simplest version I could make.

Write what you enjoy. There'll be folks who will have tastes that line up. I wrote a story where a girl gets a spanking and only let off when she agrees to get on her knees, and threw in elves and shit for no reason, and in spite of thinking it was "Too mean" people still liked it.

I do want to experiment with making fleshed out characters, though. Characters people get attached to, to see if that makes the erotica parts any more appealing.

But to answer the question, I think the most important part is to appeal to the senses. Maybe less about "What's the character thinking?" and more "What's the character physically feeling?"

But honestly if you write stuff that you like, you're more likely to get people to like it than if you write it while trying to chase the "perfect mix." Of course, learning from your old stories is important and such, and there's something to be said about changing up your style. Really, if you're trying to start off as a writer, just write what you want to read.
