He's somewhere in between. Most of the RPG maker shekel masters have no idea what they're doing (going with the vanilla RPGmaker menu, which has the turn based stats, gear and items still in it). This guy edited those out and added some nice HUD elements. But his storytelling is utter shit, and so is his 3D model.

Also I'm gonna follow up with something here: Visual Novels are so much fucking easier than RPG's so far it makes me wanna cry. I don't have a TENTH of the stress I did when working on Overwhored. There's just so much less that I have to balance and test. If the artists do the art, if the writing is done and the very simple system works it's fucking done. Easy. No problemo.

I started with RPG's because RPG Maker made it so I could make a game with 99% of the content done for me. I added hand drawn art paid for out of my own pocket because I wanted something better than most of the BS I saw out there. I couldn't have made a visual novel then, and to be honest that's sad. Visual novels are SO much easier for someone like me. But you have to pull in enough cash to pay the artists. When I started I went for what I could pay for which was... well, I won't shit-talk the awesome dudes that did art for me, but I got what I could afford. I've replaced a lot of that art for a reason even if I love the dudes that made it.

I'm learning a lot of things as well; namely that long VN's are going to be fairly similar in price to make as short VN's like I'm doing now. A few more backgrounds, a few more full sex scenes - but you'll end up using the "core" backgrounds a lot and the character CG gets used and reused. I wasn't sure before starting this whether or not the horror girl dating sim would be totally doable. After just getting this far I can tell you HELL YES.

I'm still going to do the expansion for Overwhored right after this VN, but I don't know if I'll do any more RPG's after Overwhored II. They're a fuckload of work and using RPG maker comes with a stigma that VN's don't have. Well, it doesn't for Germans (hence me having so many German fans like yourself) but everywhere else it does. We'll see I guess.

It was a good way to learn. So now I know how to interact with people here. A lot of others are used to tumblr or reddit or somewhere else and don't understand that you have to be blunt and direct but funny here to survive. In those places you have to be PC and indirect (and often humorless) to survive.

The demo will be out on the 1st of June for Patrons, the 1st of July to the public. Subsequent releases will happen every few months until all five in-game days are done. The main reason it takes so long is that I hire artists and other support (like programmers) on commission and am thus stuck in the queue with all of you losers. Home Invasion is a very short game and would be about a month's worth of work for a larger studio - if I could afford to pay a salary to the people that work for me and hire them full time I'm pretty confident that, polish and all, it'd be done in just a month or two.

Do you have any idea how much it takes to hire professional artists full time though? Because I do. The rates tend to be around $200 a pic. It costs me a lot less to do it this way even if it is slow.

I'd need to be making about $9k a month stably to make low budget games steadily and quickly. In other words Akabur level money. I'm making $1700-$1800, so I'd just need $7000 a month or so extra. NSFW games are almost all hobby-tier works done by amateurs and I include myself in that. Most people aren't prepared to transition into a real studio and don't even know how if that were an option.

I have a good background to move into it and I know more or less what to expect and even I am not sure I could handle suddenly getting Breeding Season level money. Patreon isn't fully reliable and that means you could get shorted on any given month so you'd have to work understaffed relative to what you make and save up a portion for rainy days. But you don't just pay for programmers, artists and writers you also pay for managers, lawyers, advertisers and social media.

Here's how I'd break down that money and use it. Note that this is not how a lot of major studios would do it and I'll break down why soon.

1: I would use only HALF that money for staff payment. This means the monthly budget is around $17k a month. That equates to around 204k a year. That sounds like a lot; it isn't. Your average game programmer makes around $64k a year. A full time video game artist costs about $74k a year. After one artist and one programmer you're down to only $69k and you haven't paid yourself (the manager) yet or a writer. So you'd have to offer below industry average to hire everyone you need. Say around $60k a year to the programmer and the artist; the artist would be taking a hefty paycut and probably be unhappy. Still, if you hired a female artist she'd probably be happy with it, depressingly - they make around that much (dudes somehow do get an average of $14k a year more). Pay gap may not be real in a lot of places but it is in games. But let's say you hire yourself on for $60k and double as a writer - something I can do. You're at $180k and have about $24k a year for miscellaneous hires. A lot of that would go to legal fees because adult games are just going to have legal issues, period. If you want voice actors that's gonna cost too.

This leaves you with around another 204k a year for everything else. I'll divide this in half again; 102k a year will go directly to savings to deal with Patreon pay fluctuations and unexpected disasters.

Next you'll want an actual studio in meatspace. Thankfully you've only got about three people on staff so you could hire a small one outside a metropolitan area. Let's call it $5k a month. You've got a hefty startup cost but can forego saving for the first month to buy the computers and desks you'll need. Staff can clean on rotation so you don't need a janitor. That's $60k gone.

But wait, you say - where does the other $18k go? Ahh, that brings us to the big disaster. Fuckin' advertising. Realistically you should be spending twice as much on advertising as you would on actual game development. That's the rule a lot of major studios follow. I am a cheap bastard - this isn't enough to hire anyone full time. It's just enough for a small directed advertising campaign. Word of mouth would have to cover a lot.

So on the whole if I had Breeding Season level money that's what I'd be able to do. One full time artist, one full time programmer, and one full time me. Games would get made very quickly but that's still a tiny studio. You might - MIGHT be able to get away with cutting savings in half. But I wouldn't recommend it. The savings portion would also have to cover taxes so you probably wouldn't even get that much saved in the end. Hell, I might even be short. We'll see.

Looking at it like that I feel like it's a goddamn miracle I actually make games with the money I do.
